GARDAI are appealing for information after four pieces of lifesaving equipment in a busy seaside town were “intentionally damaged”.

The round orange lifebuoys, also known as life rings, are stationed near bodies of water all over the country in case of emergency.

They are used to keep people afloat and prevent drowning if they fall in the water.

Stealing or damaging the life saving equipment is a criminal offence.

It means that people in need of help may not get it due to the faulty or missing equipment.

Emergency servies commonly use the saying “a stolen buoy, a stolen life”.

Taking to social media, Gardai urged anyone who may have any images or information to get in touch with Enniscorthy Garda Station.

Posting on Facebook, they said: “A stolen ring buoy, a stolen life.

“Gardai are seeking information regarding the intentional damage to four pieces of lifesaving equipment at the Promenade in Enniscorthy, which was reported yesterday, 18th of February.

“Anyone who may have witnessed or who has images of those involved, is asked to contact Enniscorthy Garda Station on 053 924 2580.

“Interference, damage or theft of a ring buoy or other lifesaving equipment is a criminal offence.

“It also hampers the rescue of someone who enters the water.”

Who is Luigi Mangione?

Luigi Mangione, 26, was born and raised in Maryland, with his last known residence in Honolulu, Hawaii.

He attended the Gilman School,​​ an elite $40,000-a-year Baltimore prep school, graduating as valedictorian in 2016.

One former student from the Gilman School told The U.S. Sun Mangione was “popular” and had a “big circle of friends.”

The former student, who asked not to be identified, said: “We went to the same school but didn’t really have the same friends. I’m really shocked by this whole thing.

“I think he played soccer, it was an all-boys school, so being a good athlete got you social currency for sure.”

They added: “It’s not uncommon that people have their gripes with CEOs, especially with CEOs of healthcare in this country, but to assassinate someone?”

“That sounds very, very insane to me. The world is a crazy a** place.”

In 2020, Mangione graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer, and Information Science, per his LinkedIn profile.

Mangione was actively involved in campus life, reportedly working as a teaching assistant and founding a video game development club.

He also served as a head counselor for a pre-collegiate studies program at Stanford University during the summer of 2019.

The suspect’s great-grandfather, Nicholas Mangione, was a first-generation American who built a real estate empire in Maryland and owned the Turf Valley Resort, Hayfields Country Club and the WCBM-AM radio station. He also founded the Lorien Health Services nursing home.

Mangione is the cousin of Republican Maryland House of Delegates member Nino Mangione.

Will Luigi Mangione appear in court?

The suspect was in court in December 2024 for his arraignment on state murder and terror charges.

Magione will appear in front of a judge again on 21 February, 2025, for a hearing at a state court in Manhattan.

The 26-year-old’s legal team are expected to provide updates on the status of his case.

Judge Gregory Carro could set deadlines for pretrial paperwork or even set a trial date.

Following an extensive week-long search, Mangione was apprehended on December 9, 2024, at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

A McDonald’s employee called the cops on the suspect, who was “sitting there eating,” New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a press conference on Monday, December 9.

Upon his arrest, Mangione was found in possession of several incriminating items:

• A 9mm ghost gun with a silencer, consistent with the weapon used in Thompson’s murder
• Multiple counterfeit identification cards, including a fake New Jersey ID matching the one used to check into a Manhattan hostel prior to the shooting
• A three-page handwritten manifesto expressing frustrations with the US healthcare system

Initially charged with firearms offenses in Pennsylvania, Mangione was later charged with murder in New York City.

Possible motives

While the exact motive remains unclear, authorities have noted that Mangione’s handwritten document revealed his “motivation and mindset”.

Chief of Detectives Kenny said: “We don’t think that there’s any specific threat to other people mentioned in that document, but it does seem he has some ill will toward corporate America.”

In a bizarre turn it said: “We are not here to celebrate violence, but we do believe in the constitutional right of fair legal representation.

“All proceeds will be sent directly to Luigi or, if he chooses to reject the funds, they will instead be donated to legal funds for other U.S political prisoners.

“Luigi’s mailing address has been made available, and we are writing to him to open a line of communication. In future letters, we will send printouts of selected comments from this fundraising page.”

POPULAR fashion retailer Quiz has announced its closure of Irish stores – after it fell into insolvency.

Quiz Clothing has shut almost two dozen shops, with closures affecting locations in Ireland, England and Scotland.

Some 191 employees have been made redundant following the immediate store closures.

Irish closures include shops at The Square Tallaght, Dublin, Athlone Town Centre shopping centre, Newbridge, Whitewater shopping centre in Kildare, Erneside shopping centre in Enniskillen and Richmond shopping centre in Derry.

Chief Executive of Quiz, Sheraz Ramzan, said: “The Board took the difficult decision to appoint administrators to Zandra Retail Limited in light of the continuing challenging trading conditions impacting the Group’s performance.

“We are deeply sorry to those affected by the store closures, including our retail colleagues.

“However, this decision will put the business in a more sustainable footing for the future and protect several hundred jobs as a result.”

The fashion giant, who offers catwalk style looks at affordable prices, has appointed insolvency practitioner Teneo to manage its collapse.

Joint administrator at Teneo, Gavin Maher, said: “Although the sale has resulted in the transfer of a number of jobs, it has been necessary to make redundancies.

Despite the closures and job losses, Orion Retail has brought the Quiz brand out of administration.

Bosses said Quiz will continue its stores in Newry and concessions at shops in Carlow, Mullingar, Portlaoise, and Drogheda.

The retailer has faced difficulties for some time noting in December that there was a “significant reduction in revenues.”

The business has already gone through one restructuring in 2020 after going in to administration and renegotiated its rents as lock downs damaged retailers.

It comes as New Look announced that it will exit the country, with the loss of 347 jobs.

New Look Retailers Ltd sought to have provisional liquidators appointed yesterday.

The High Court approved that Shane McCarthy and Cormac O’Connor of KPMG Ireland be appointed as Provisional Liquidators over the business and its assets.

It is now set to wind down its operations in Ireland after years of losses and challenging market conditions.

ANOTHER week and I’m attending another launch of another new SUV.

This time it was the turn of the Peugeot 5008, an updated version of the popular seven-seater SUV that’s now bigger, better and loaded with tech.

Again, the launch started from Gowan Auto in Dublin and we headed north to Newry this time, staying in the stunning surrounding of Killeavy Castle Estate.

As mentioned earlier, the new 5008 has grown in size and is now 2,900mm in length — 161mm longer than before so more space inside for all seven occupants.

The second row of seats is now adjustable, sliding back and forth 150mm, and they can be reclined as well, while Peugeot have made it easier to access the two seats in the back.

With the third row in use, the 5008’s boot is still a decent 348 litres.

Drop them down for a substantial 916 litres, and fold the second row and you have a van-like 2,232 litres of load-lugging room at your disposal.

Customers can choose between a hybrid powertrain or a fully-electric version and both have the same starting price of €50,995.

The hybrid is powered by a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo petrol engine and a self-charging 48V hybrid system with a combined output of 136bhp.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox and in urban conditions the hybrid can run on electric power 50 per cent of the time and has a 40mpg fuel consumption.

During the launch it was the fully-electric E-5008 that I put to the test, and not only can you have it large with the ample room and seating for seven.

You can also have it large thanks to its range as the new E-5008 can cover up to 502km on a single charge.

It’s powered by a 73kWh battery and its 157kW electric motor produces 210hp and 345Nm of instant torque so it’s good for 0-100kph in 9.7 seconds with a top speed of 170kph.

The E-5008 is heavy, thanks to its big battery and seven seats, so it tips the scales at 2,218kg and that’s before you load it with passengers or any luggage.

It does a good job of trying to hide its girth, but push it too hard and its lardy make-up will be all too apparent.

So leave the spirited driving for something more sporty like a Peugeot 508 PSE.

But in normal driving conditions it’s very comfortable and, being an EV, it’s smooth and quiet with decent grip for a FWD SUV.

Thanks to 160kW DC fast charging the E-5008 can go from 20-80 per cent in just 30 minutes and using a 7kW wallbox will take around eight hours for full charge.

And a new long-range 98kWh battery model with a range up to 668km will join the line-up later this year.

Although your driving style and cold weather can have a big impact on your range, so I’ll report back with a real-world figure when I have the E-5008 home for a week of testing.

There are two trim levels on offer, Allure and GT, and both are fully loaded featuring Peugeot’s new advanced Panoramic i-Cockpit that consists of a 21-inch dual curved digital display that combines a raised head-up display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Allure includes adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go, wireless phone charging, 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot detection, 19-inch alloy wheels and embossed fabric and leather-effect trim, although heated seats are an optional extra.

GT trim then adds a black diamond roof, Pixel LED headlights, 3D LED rear lights, hands-free smart electric tailgate, ambient interior lighting, heated seats and heated steering wheel.
