Politicians are bad at running trains, building cars & installing phones – why would they be better at running football?

THERE are plenty of things wrong with this country.

Our schools, trains and courts are underperforming.

Why tinker with what is working well? Why regulate something that, without regulation, has become England’s most popular export?

Many civil servants have not bothered to return to the office. Our healthcare system is pitied around Europe.

But our football leagues are world-beating.

No foreign equivalent comes close to the popularity of the Premier League, which is watched by an incredible two billion people all over the world.

Indeed, not only is the Premier League the most popular in the world; the lower tier English Football League is sixth.

Why tinker with what is working well? Why regulate something that, without regulation, has become England’s most popular export?

The Football Governance Bill, currently in its final stage in Parliament, is a textbook example of needless and meddlesome regulation by politicians wanting to flaunt their man-of-the-people credentials.

Price of failure

It is a non-solution to a non-problem which is bound to have unintended consequences.

MPs are using a sledgehammer to miss a nut.

The new law will create a new regulator with 250 staff. (So much for Keir Starmer’s claim that we should focus on growth.)

Those staff will be able to tell clubs where they play, in what strip and on what terms.

They will even be able to commandeer some of their assets to give to other clubs.

This is more shocking than people realise.

It won’t be long before the state is telling clubs what they must do in terms of gender quotas, Net Zero, ticket prices — you name it.

It is one thing for successful clubs to make voluntary “parachute payments” to those facing relegation. It is quite another for the Government to help itself to their cash.

Regulators never offer to reduce their role. They always want more power.

It won’t be long before the state is telling clubs what they must do in terms of gender quotas, Net Zero, ticket prices — you name it.

To what problem is this measure a solution?

Are our clubs facing ruin? Far from it.

The taxes they generate are bigger than the employer National Insurance rise, the extension of VAT, the farm estate tax and the scrapping of Winter Fuel Payments combined.

English clubs are successful precisely because the price of failure is high.

Two events are cited by supporters of the law.

One did not happen at all and the other was much less of a problem than is claimed.

The one that did not happen was the proposal for a European Super League in 2021, a breakaway group of 20 top clubs, six of them English.

Among other things, it is now proposed that clubs should monitor the diversity of their season ticket holders.

There was a backlash, and the idea was dropped within weeks.

But not before MPs had jumped on the Something Must Be Done bandwagon.

The one that did happen was the bankruptcy of Bury FC, which was traumatic for many in the town.

But Bury is still playing at the same ground and in the same colours — albeit as a new legal entity that must work its way back up from the lower leagues.

All that happened without any regulator. Indeed, of all the teams that were in the Football League in the Sixties, not one has disappeared.

Is one case really enough to justify handing control to the government? Apparently so.

The financial collapse of Rangers in 2012 might seem a bigger deal but Scotland is outside the scope of this Bill and, in any case, the Gers have also climbed back.

The legislation started life under the Conservatives, and has been beefed up by Labour since the election.

Create problems

Among other things, it is now proposed that clubs should monitor the diversity of their season ticket holders.

Of course it is. This is how all regulators operate.

They start with a limited role — in this case, stopping the financial collapse of a club — and end up extending their powers across the board.

Let me make a prediction.

This regulation will fail in its own terms, creating more problems than it solves.

If MPs think that fans are angry now about the occasional rogue proprietor, just wait until they see the relative decline of English football and turn their anger, not against the occasional absentee owner, but against the politicians who foisted the system on them.

The worst sequence in politics goes like this: “Something must be done. This is something. Let’s do this.”

Politicians were bad at operating trains, building cars and installing telephones.

What makes them think they’ll be any better at running football?

Michael Duffy scores stunning free-kick and both managers see red as Derry City beat Bohemians in Premier Division

MICHAEL DUFFY’S sublime 10th minute free-kick proved enough to get Derry City’s season up and running at Brandywell against Bohemians as both managers saw red!

The winger, who netted just five goals last season in the league took his tally to two from two as his impressive goal streak against the Dubliners continues.

Duffy scored five in his last seven against Bohemians, including two sensational goals in last season’s FAI Cup semi-final and his 10th minute curler was worthy of the three points on this occasion.

Shortly after the restart both Tiernan Lynch and Alan Reynolds were shown red cards by referee Marc Lynch for leaving their technical areas during a melee which ensued after a robust Shane Ferguson tackle in front of the Bohemians dugout.

French striker Lys Mousset had a glorious chance with a free header from six yards to get Bohs level but fluffed his lines.

It was a real comedown for the Dubliners after last Sunday’s record breaking Dublin derby win at the Aviva over Shamrock Rovers as Lynch made his Brandywell debut a winning one.

The Brandywell boss made one change to his starting line-up from their opening night loss to Shelbourne at Tolka Park with Sadou Diallo replacing Pat Hoban in a 4-1-4-1 formation.

His counterpart Reynolds brought in Preston North End loanee Kian Best for his debut alongside teenage winger Rhys Brennan as John Mountney and Dayle Rooney dropped to the bench.

New signing from Crystal Palace Sean Grehan – who was reportedly a target for Derry – started on the bench.

The Brandywell men started brightly and carved open the Bohs defence in the opening five minutes. Adam O’Reilly found Dom Thomas on the right who got beyond the last defender but James Talbot got enough on his effort which went narrowly wide of the post.

Playing with a strong wind at their backs, it was a confident start from the home side and they hit the front on 10 minutes in some style.

Duffy, who was fouled 25 yards from goal, picked himself up to take the resultant free-kick and curled it into the top corner.

Moments later there was a flashpoint in front of the Bohemians dugout after a tackle involving Derry’s Shane Ferguson and both sets of players got involved in a melee. Match referee Marc Lynch flashed a yellow card to the Derry full-back before sending both Reynolds and Lynch to the stands.

Kian Best delivered a superb free-kick from a promising position on the left side of the penalty area and Mousset somehow sent a free header from six yards over the crossbar.

Duffy tried his luck once again from a free-kick,this time from further out but Talbot got down smartly to parry the ball clear.

Boyce found Thomas in space on the edge of the box with a brilliant crossfield pass. The Scotsman skipped past Best and crossed low across the face of the net but Boyce couldn’t get a touch with the goal at his mercy.

Bohs made one change at the break as Sean Grehan, who recently completed his loan move from Crystal Palace, replaced Rob Cornwall at the heart of defence.

And the visitors created two decent chances in the opening five minutes. Firstly Brennan’s strike was saved by Brian Maher before Mousset got on the end of Best’s cross and his looping header nestled on the top of the net.

Connor Parsons came close with another close range header as Bohs began to pen Derry into their own half.

Ben Doherty, returning from a long term hamstring injury entered the fray for Ferguson and received the biggest cheer of the night for a crunching tackle on Liam Smith.

Paul McMullan came off the bench for the final eight minutes of the match for his 50th consecutive appearance for Derry City, the Scotsman featuring in every game since making his debut in July 2023!

Sam Todd who was heavily criticised for his involvement in all three of Shelbourne’s goals last week in the 3-1 loss made an important tackle to thwart a dangerous Bohemians attack deep into stoppage time before Ross Tierney flashed a shot wide of the target.

Derry defended resolutely during six minutes of stoppage time to clinch a first win of Lynch’s Brandywell reign.

Dani Dyer reveals how many times it took her to pass driving test and how she crashed into her mum’s car while learning

REALITY star Dani Dyer was such a terrible learner driver she crashed three times before finally passing her test, she has revealed.

The former Love Island winner, 28, smashed into her mother’s car, a house gate and a bin lorry while practising.

She failed one test when, as soon as she set off, the examiner slammed on the brakes to stop her hitting someone on a zebra crossing.

After revealing her appalling record to former EastEnders actor dad Danny on their podcast, he said: “I didn’t realise what a danger to society you were then — and how many wing mirrors you lost.”

Dani hardly seemed set for all her woes behind the wheel, as she studied hard and breezed through her theory test first time.

But she told her dad on their Live and Let Dyers podcast: “I smashed into mother’s car. I tried to overtake a dust cart — I overtook it and smashed my wing mirror up.

“I smashed into your gate. God, I smashed that car up to bits.”

And Dani, who revealed her first car was a Mini bought by her dad, 47, said her first two practical tests could not have gone worse.

She said: “The lady, when she walked out I was s****ing myself. Second time, the same lady came out, so automatically I knew I was going to fail.

“She didn’t understand why my name was Dani — she kept saying. That’s a boy’s name.

“As soon as I pulled out she hit the brake because there was a person at a zebra crossing, so I said to her, ‘You broke, so I know I’ve failed’.

“I said, ‘Can we just stop here because I know I’ve failed?’. She said, ‘No, just continue’.”

Things went better on her third test — and the examiner was rewarded with a signed copy of her dad’s autobiography.

Mum-of-three Dani, engaged to England and West Ham ace Jarrod Bowen, said: “The third time lucky was that guy — I sent him a signed book.”

If her dad knew about all her escapades, he might have been wary about acting alongside Dani in 2021, when she made a cameo appearance in EastEnders — playing a black-cab driver.

In the episode, Danny’s character Mick Carter, is late for a baby scan appointment with wife Linda, but manages to flag down Dani’s character, Jeanette, in her taxi.

She is heavily pregnant but her waters break on the way to hospital — meaning Mick has to take the wheel to get her there as quickly as possible.

In 2023, the pair also appeared together in road trip documentary, Absolutely Dyer: Danny and Dani Do Italy.

Ultra rare ‘mysterious’ 1p sells at auction for £90,000 – how to check if you have one in your collection

AN ULTRA rare 1p is selling at auction for an eye-watering £90,000 – here’s how to check if you have one.

A TikTok user showcased the coin in a recent video, claiming it to be one of the “rarest and most mysterious” British coins.

It is a Queen Elizabeth II one penny, dated 1954.

The TikToker says that hardly any of these pennies exist.

According to the video, in 1954, no pennies were officially released for circulation.

But it’s believed a few were minted, resulting in merely a handful of 1954 pennies made.

These could have been for test pieces or private issues – making their value incredibly high.

An old Brit man sorting through his coin collection found the 1954 piece – and it’s appearing on auction for tens of thousands.

In one listing, it has a reserve price of £90,000 but has the estimated price of £90,000-£120,000.

The TikTok video has been flooded with over 100 comments, with hopefuls asking if the dates on their pennies were significant.

One asked: “I’ve got a 1964?”

The poster responded: “No good sorry.”

Another bragged: “I have the coin ha.”

But the TikToker wasn’t convinced, quipping: “No you don’t.”

This is not the only coin that could make their lucky owners a huge profit.

A 2p with a subtle wording mistake – “New Pence” instead of “Two Pence” – could be worth around £1000.

Meanwhile, 50p coins decorated with a cartoon high-jumper for the 2012 London Olympics have been selling for as much as £142 and £216.

Another coin designed for the Games – which was minted with horizontal lines mistakenly etched into it – can fetch an enormous £3000 at auction.

It’s also worth checking the £2 coins lurking in your loose change, as a specific cat design could mean they’re worth over 100 times they’re usual value.

What are the most rare and valuable coins?

Morrisons is offering a Cadbury Creme Egg 5 Pack Milk Chocolate or Mixed Milk Chocolate Box for just £2.

Bargain hunter website Hot Deals UK posted the whopping great deal on its website with the offer immediately receiving a lot of attention.

The initial value of the five-pack was £4 but with a More card, Morrisons’ loyalty reward scheme, the price plunges down to £2.

If you fancy straying away from the original Creme Egg, the variety pack comes in three different flavours.

The classic is milk chocolate set in an egg-shaped chocolate shell made from Cadburys iconic chocolate.

In the centre, is a smooth sugary fondant in white and yellow to represent the egg ‘white’ and yolk.’

It’s been a British classic for decades and is placed on shelves around Easter time.

The white Creme Egg is the same design as the classic but with a luxurious white chocolate eggshell.

In the caramel Creme Egg is a milk chocolate exterior and a thick gooey caramel centre.

Morrisons has blown shoppers away with the price tag on the five-pack, with other stores selling them for nearly double.

In Poundland and Iceland the treats are selling for £3.50 and in Sainsbury’s and Waitrose they’re even priced at £4.

Chocoholics online have been sharing their thoughts as to which flavour of egg was their favourite.

The white chocolate egg has caught the attention of many Creme Egg fans.

On Ocado, one shopper wrote: “Great to have 3 different types of egg in one pack.

“Although there is always a fight over the white one.”

Another shopper with a sweet tooth said: “Good to have the variety.

“I find white chocolate sickly but this is okay.

“Creme Eggs are always good and the caramel is a nice change – great when on offer.

A third customer however was gushing about the new white chocolate version, writing: “Absolutely delicious.

“I didn’t think anything could improve the good old Creme Egg, but then along comes the white chocolate version.

“Very sweet, but that’s okay with me.

“Shame that only one is included but the caramel ones are really good too. Mmm!!”

If you’re keen to try out the variety pack for as little as a two pound coin, you’ll have to make sure you’re got a Morrisons More Card.

With one of these you can earn points on groceries in-store, online, and when you fill up your car.

When you reach 5,000 points you’ll be given a fiver to spend in any Morrisons store.

Also you’ll have access to a range of the stores discounts only available to More Card customers.

You can sign up online or ask a staff member to help you in a Morrisons store.

If this isn’t quite satisfying your Easter Egg craving, there are other stores offering delicious discounts on festive chocolates.

Aldi has slashed its price for the giant 232g Cadbury Mini Eggs Easter egg.

With two Mini Eggs hidden inside the enormous egg, the sweet treat comes with an even sweeter deal as it now costs just £4.95, reduced from £5.99.

Even pizza chain Dominos is getting in on the Easter action, releasing a Cadbury Creme Egg cookie.

The 370-calorie cookies come in boxes of four and each contains a whole Creme Egg coated in dough.
