The TGL ratings have been steady and far better than LIV Golf, the other alternative to the PGA Tour. On Monday, the TGL had a great opportunity to shine with a President’s Day triple-header. A DETECTIVE responsible for violent sex cases struck up sexual relationships with junior staff, a misconduct panel heard.

Married Roger Wood, pictured above, bragged that he was a “bad ass” and could be their “sugar daddy” and boasted of his “rank, importance and power”.

He told one “vulnerable” woman after sex at her home: “Now you’ve had the DCI.”

DCI Wood, of Hampshire Constabulary, asked a staff member to knit him socks with the words “world’s best detective”.

He is charged with gross misconduct over inappropriate emotional relationships with two women A and B, and excessive communications with Ms B.

Both felt “used” by him, the panel was told.

DCI Wood, nationally recognised for his work, quit in 2024 after 16 years.

He denies any conduct breach.

Eastleigh hearing continues.

The two reasons why ‘mega-merger’ between iconic car firm ‘on brink of collapse’ & rival brand broke down within weeks

A MAJOR merger between an iconic car firm at risk of collapse and a rival brand has broken down within just weeks of negotiations.

Japanese carmakers Nissan and Honda are two of the most renowned names in the motoring world but their “mega-merger” collapsed for two key reasons.

Talks of a ‘mega-merger’ between Nissan and Honda broke down this month[/caption]

Nissan was unhappy with two of Honda’s demands[/caption]

Merger talks between the two motoring giants were cancelled this month, with one senior Nissan official strongly objecting to the “rude things” his company had been told.

Nissan has been struggling with sales in recent years, brought about by poor management decisions and a failure to adapt to the growing electric vehicle (EV) market.

Worries have been further exacerbated by the Zero-Emission Vehicle, or ZEV, mandate, requiring 28 per cent of car sales to be electric in 2025 — or face fines of £15,000 for every car they fall short on.

A merger with Honda could cut costs for both companies, but there have been two key reasons behind the collapse in talks.

Firstly, discomfort came from Honda’s demand that Nissan would become its subsidiary, something the latter felt went against previous agreements, reports The Japan News.

Secondly, Honda also told Nissan to restructure its business and abandon its original hybrid vehicle (HV) system, e-Power, in order to adopt Honda’s HV system.

These decisions no doubt injured Nissan’s pride and contributed to the collapse of talks.

Honda is understood to have pressured the abandonment of Nissan’s HV system in order to increase its sales channels and its effectiveness of mass production.

This, in turn, would have also helped Nissan to reduce its procurement costs – the costs to acquire the system from Honda.

Nissan was previously world-leading in its production of EVs but has struggled to keep up with Toyota and Honda in production of hybrid motors.

“It is obvious that we are a little better than Nissan when it comes to HVs,” a senior Honda official said on Thursday.

Nissan has also published its financial results outlook for the year ending March 31, and it does not look ideal.

The company is expected to have a net loss of hundreds of millions of pounds, with its operating loss for the automobile division expected to be greater than one billion pounds.

Nissan’s original plans to merge with Honda emerged in December last year but issues meant these never evolved to a full-blown deal.

If they had combined forces, the new carmaker would be the third-largest in the world by sales volume, after Toyota and Volkswagen.

Industry insiders have revealed that Nissan is now open to mergers with other automotive or technology firms.

One of the potential companies is Foxconn, also known as Hon Hai Technology Group.

The company has reportedly already approached Nissan in December before asking Renault to sell its 35 per cent stake in the company.

Nissan announced its plans for a restructure – confirming three of its global factories will shut as part of a £2 billion saving initiative.

NISSAN ‘ON THE BRINK OF COLLAPSE’

This comes as the Japanese car maker has warned it is “on the brink of collapse” and that it could go under without much-needed support.

A Nissan official said the firm has “12 or 14 months to survive” and was likely to endure “tough” months ahead.

The firm has already cut 9,000 jobs across its global operation, while its CEO Makoto Uchida took a 50 per cent pay cut in an economy drive.

Pressure from the Government’s EV sales targets has also played a part in Nissan’s woes.

Currently, Nissan’s sales of electric cars, such as the Leaf, are lagging behind their rivals, putting them at risk of significant penalties.

Naturally, the brand is pushing for a relaxation of these rules – not least because Nissan runs the UK’s largest car factory in Sunderland, and a collapse for the manufacturer could spell disaster for the 6,000 British workers employed there.

According to a report from The Times, Nissan’s global boss Uchida spoke to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at an autumn investment summit and raised concerns about the impact of the Government’s rules on their business.

Nissan warned ministers, including Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, that the current rules could put the Sunderland plan at risk.

To this end, Nissan asked the Government to pause the rules for two years, suggesting they make them “monitoring only” instead of enforcing fines.

The Government has since launched a review of the rules, with a consultation closing soon.

Viral scented water bottle on shelves of major UK supermarket for first time – with key feature to make you drink more

A WATER bottle designed to help you to drink more water with a clever mind trick will be stocked in a major UK supermarket.

Air Up is a German creation that uses the power of scent to add ‘flavour’ to water.

The bottles work by using retronasal olfaction[/caption]

The bizarre concept has hit Sainsbury’s shelves with a £30 price tag and is currently sold out online.

Sainsbury’s is the brand’s first British supermarket after trading in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and Spain.

Users inhale fruity scents through special pods as they drink, kick-starting a reaction in the brain called ‘retronasal olfaction’.

Across the UK, 519 branches of Sainsbury’s now stock Gen2 and Sipper bottles and seven pod flavours.

The Sipper model carries an rsp of £24.99, while Gen2 will cost £29.99. Pods start at £4.99 per three-pack.

The 600ml bottles were invented by five founders who, according to their website, had “no money, no experience – just one goal”.

The company claims to double the consumer’s water intake in “just four weeks” and say that after 12 weeks users will report “35 percent more energy and 30 percent less dry skin”.

“It’s science! Retronasal olfaction is the natural human ability to experience 80% of taste perceptions,” it reads on Air Up’s website.

“Taste happens behind the nose, not in the mouth!”

“Air Up is the first company ever to harness this untapped potential, allowing us to create any flavor (yes, any!) without any downsides.”

“Just got my first air up and I love it!” one happy customer wrote on Instagram.

“Coolest water bottle in the universe,” added a second.

However, Air Up has taken a battering online for “poor customer service”, “faulty products” and “late or no delivery”.

“Worst customer service ever. Shocking from such an innovative brand. I’d avoid at all costs!” one wrote.

“They are rubbish! Don’t waste your money! You can’t drink them properly! Useless waste,” a second added.

“I spent around £90 buying air up bottles for my three kids just to find they leak and soak their school bags. Then discover you’ve just released a leak proof version,” wrote a third.

Another added: “Are there real people on your support team? Been waiting for weeks for my order and keep going round in circles with the bot.”

Although a fourth said: “There are lots of customer service complaints but I’ve just emailed customer service and they gave me a 5 star service, I’m so pleased, my comments were listened to, I even got a response within about an hour! They went out of their way to resolve my issue.

The Sun has approached Air Up for comment.

The brand launched in the UK in 2021 and generated £100million in revenue.

Air Up has supplied more than two million customers in the UK.

It has grown from a startup in 2019 to a global company with 250 employees and operations in 14 countries.

United Nations judge ‘tricked young woman into coming to UK to being her slave’

A UNITED Nations criminal tribunal judge tricked a young woman into coming to the UK to be her slave, a court has heard.

Lydia Mugambe, pictured above, is accused of taking advantage of her status over her alleged victim.

Mugambe, who was studying for a law PhD at Oxford University, is said to have prevented the young Ugandan woman from holding down a job and forced her to work as her maid and to provide childcare for free.

Prosecutors allege Mugambe, who is also a High Court judge in Uganda, had the intention of “obtaining someone to make her life easier and at the least possible cost to herself”.

She is also accused of attempting to intimidate her alleged victim into dropping the case.

Oxford crown court heard she conspired with Ugandan deputy high commissioner John Leonard Mugerwa to arrange for the woman to come to Britain.

The pair are said to have participated in a “very dishonest” trade-off, in which Mr Mugerwa allegedly arranged for the Ugandan High Commission to sponsor the woman’s entrance into the UK.

That was in exchange for Mugambe attempting to speak to a judge who was in charge of legal action Mr Mugerwa was named in, the court was told.

The trial was also told Mugambe tried to claim she had diplomatic immunity but a check revealed she does not have it.

She denies four charges against her.

Trial continues.

Love Island fans work out real reason Grace and Luca didn’t win in surprise fan U-turn

LOVE Island All Stars fans think they know exactly why Grace Jackson and Luca Bish lost out on the crowns in the live final.

Grace and Luca had been tipped to win this year’s series of the ITV2 reality show but they missed out at the last hurdle.

Casey and Gabby won in a surprise result[/caption]

In a shock result, Gabby Allen and Casey O’Gorman were announced by host Maya Jama as this year’s winners, leaving Luca and Grace in second place.

Viewers, however, are convinced they know the real reason for the surprise outcome.

Just 24 hours before the Love Island All Stars Live Final, dumped islander Olivia Hawkins dropped a massive bombshell.

Eleven former islanders returned to the villa in South Africa in a last twist and Liv refused to hold back.

The brunette beauty claimed to the group that she had “seen a text message” in which Grace allegedly said she would “do whatever it takes” to win Love Island All Stars.

Grace furiously denied Liv’s game plan accusation and insisted she had never said such a thing.

But fans believe it was enough to mark her card – even if it does turn out to be untrue.

Writing on X after Gabby and Casey were revealed as this year’s All Stars champs, one fan said: “They won because Liv decided to be a bad omen!”

Another added: “It’s all Liv’s fault, she puts even more doubts in people’s head so that gave Fiat500 and Facebook mums more hype to vote for Gabby’s couple.”

A third shared a GIF of a building ablaze, saying: “Liv after planting the seeds of doubt that caused Luca and Grace to lose to Gabby and Casey.”

Five couples made it to the Love Island All Stars final.

Ekin-Su and Curtis finished in third place, Catherine and Omar in fourth and Elma and Sammy in fifth.

The rest of the islanders from this year’s series were in the live studio audience outside the villa in South Africa, including Liv.

And things were extremely frosty between her and Grace.

Their feud about Grace’s alleged message was brought up again in the live broadcast as Maya spoke to Liv.

Tensions escalated as Maya said: “Absolute scenes when you came into the villa the other day. The question we all want to know, do you have the receipts?”

Glaring across at Grace, Liv replied: “I’ve seen them, I’ve said what I’ve said. You know me, I’m very straight talking. I’m straight to the point. I honestly wish them the best.”

Standing on the other side of the set, Grace was visibly fuming and didn’t hold back.

She also branded herself “straight talking”, shouting back that she looked forward to “apparently seeing them”.

Just an hour later, Gabby and Casey were announced as this year’s Love Island All Stars winners.

‘It almost seems you can influence the outcome’ – Djokovic slams Sinner ban decision with locker room ‘not satisfied’

NOVAK DJOKOVIC claimed most of the tennis locker room are “not satisfied” with Jannik Sinner’s timely three-month ban.

And he said the whole saga is “very unfair” on the rest of the tennis world.

The Serb said it seemed ‘very unfair’ that the Italian negotiated a ban with Wada[/caption]

Three-time Grand Slam winner Sinner twice tested positive for the banned steroid clostebol in March 2024 but was initially cleared of wrongdoing and avoided a ban.

That is because he was inadvertently contaminated by his physio Giacomo Naldi who treated a cut on his own hand with a spray bought over the counter which contained the substance before massaging Sinner.

However, the World Anti-Doping appealed the decision and had a date at the Court of Arbitration for Sport scheduled for April, hoping to get the world No1 banned for one to two years.

But Sinner’s lawyers negotiated a case resolution agreement with Wada under provision 10.8.2 in its code by admitting “partial responsibility” for his team’s mistakes to accept the three-month suspension.

The ban started on February 9 and ends on May 4 – crucially just in time for the Italian Open and before the French Open and Wimbledon.

Had the same punishment been enforced by CAS in April, the Australian Open and US Open reigning champion would have missed both Grand Slams.

And the whole situation and Sinner’s ability to strike a deal with Wada with a very favourable ban and ideal timing has not gone down well with many of his peers.

Now Djokovic has broken his silence on the raging debate and revealed many believe there is “favouritism” at play.

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS

The 24-time Grand Slam champ said: “I spoke with several players in the locker room not only in the last few days but also in the previous months.

“Most of them are not satisfied with how the whole process has gone, and they don’t think it’s fair.

“There is a lack of trust.

“Many of them believe there was favouritism.

“We have seen the cases of Simona Halep and Tara Moore, and other players perhaps less known, who have had difficulties for years to resolve their cases, or who have been suspended for a long time.

“It almost seems like you can influence the outcome if you are a top player and have access to the best lawyers. Sinner and Swiatek are innocent, it has been proven.

“And we have to keep in mind that Sinner and Swiatek, at the time, were No1 in the world.

“We will see what happens in the near future, if the whole case will attract more attention and can shed light on other cases of lower-level players.

“I think it is really time to do something and address the system because it is clear that the structure does not work like this.

“So yes, it is inconsistent and it seems very unfair to me, and that is all I have to say about it.”

The Professional Tennis Players Association – launched by Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil in 2020 – hit out with a strong statement following the weekend’s bombshell news.

The PTPA said: “The ‘system’ is not a system. It’s a club. Supposed case-by-case discretion is, in fact, merely cover for tailored deals, unfair treatment, and inconsistent rulings.

“It’s not just the different results for different players. It’s the lack of transparency. The lack of process. The lack of consistency. The lack of credibility in the alphabet soup of agencies charged with regulating our sports and athletes.

“The lack of commitment from the ATP, WTA, Grand Slams, ITIA, and Wada to reform and create a fair and transparent system going forward.

“This bias is unacceptable for all athletes and shows a deep disrespect for every sport and its fans. It’s time for change. And we will change it.”

Nick Kyrgios labelled Saturday a “sad day for tennis” and added “fairness in tennis does not exist” while plenty of others have also expressed their anger and frustration – mainly at the system rather than Sinner himself.

What have the stars said about Sinner's ban?

By Joshua Jones

JANNIK SINNER struck a deal with the World Anti-Doping Agency in February to accept a three-month ban from tennis after two failed drugs tests last March.

Wada accepted the world No1 “did not intend to cheat” and pinned the blame on two members of Sinner’s team for the contamination – but Sinner was responsible for their actions.

The timing of the ban meant the world No1 does not miss any Grand Slams as he returns to competitive action in early May.

But the whole saga has created a storm in the tennis world with various players weighing in…

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

“I spoke with several players in the locker room… most of them are not satisfied with how the whole process has gone, and they don’t think it’s fair. Many of them believe there was favouritism. It almost seems like you can influence the outcome if you are a top player and have access to the best lawyers. I think it is really time to do something and address the system because it is clear that the structure does not work like this. So yes, it is inconsistent and it seems very unfair to me, and that is all I have to say about it.”

NICK KYRGIOS

“So Wada come out and say it would be a one-to-two-year ban. Obviously Sinner’s team have done everything in their power to just go ahead and take a three-month ban. No titles lost. No prize money lost. Guilty or not? Sad day for tennis. Fairness in tennis does not exist.”

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

“I hope everyone will have the right to represent themselves. Some players don’t have the money for a lawyer – they do it themselves. It’s a bad sign if he’s the only one who can do that, but it’s a very good sign if – after that – everyone will be able to do it. I hope it will create a precedent where everyone will have the opportunity to defend themselves better. Otherwise, if it’s not going to be possible, it’s going to be bizarre.”

LIAM BROADY

“Didn’t realise you could reach a settlement regarding a doping ban… Interesting. Back in time for French Open I guess?”

JACK DRAPER

“I know Jannik. he’s a good friend, and I know that with this whole thing, I’m sure he wouldn’t have done anything intentional. But obviously that’s the sport and we have to be accountable for what goes in our bodies. He’s got a ban for a few months, I don’t think that’s good for tennis, I don’t think it’s good for the sport that the No 1 player in the world, and someone who’s doing incredible things is having to face a ban. But he’ll be back shortly and I wish him the best and I hope he’s going to be okay.”

STAN WAWRINKA

“I don’t believe in a clean sport any more…”

FELICIANO LOPEZ

“It’s very clear he hasn’t done anything to enhance his performance, that’s proven. He’s taking full responsibility for the mistakes of others. A longer suspension would have made the sport cleaner? I don’t think so.”

JESSICA PEGULA

“The process just seems to be completely not a process. I don’t think any of the players trust the process at all right now. Zero. It’s just a horrible look for the sport. It seems to just be whatever decisions and factors they take into consideration, and they just make up their own ruling.”

TIM HENMAN

“When I read the statement this morning it just seems a little bit too convenient. Obviously having just won the Australian Open, to miss three months of the Tour and therefore to be eligible to play at Roland Garros, the timing couldn’t have been any better for Sinner, but I still think it leaves a pretty sour taste for the sport.”

Wada accept that Sinner “did not intend to cheat” and that the drug “did not provide any performance-enhancing benefit”.

It also pinned the blame of “negligence” on his team members – both Naldi and Umberto Ferrera who bought the spray were immediately fired by Sinner when the news came to light last year before the US Open.

Wada said: “However, under the code and by virtue of CAS precedent, an athlete bears responsibility for the entourage’s negligence.

“Based on the unique set of facts of this case, a three-month suspension is deemed to be an appropriate outcome.”

Sinner had always maintained his innocence, arguing the amount of clostebol found in his system from two tests amounted to less than a billionth of a gram.

He released his own statement via his lawyers which read: “This case had been hanging over me for nearly a year and the process still had a long time to run with a decision maybe only at the end of the year.

“I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realise Wada’s strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love.

“On that basis I have accepted Wada’s offer to resolve these proceedings on the basis of a three-month sanction.”

How to save money on your food shop

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save hundreds of pounds a year:

Odd boxes – plenty of retailers offer slightly misshapen fruit and veg or surplus food at a discounted price.

Lidl sells five kilos of fruit and veg for just £1.50 through its Waste Not scheme while Aldi shoppers can get Too Good to Go bags which contain £10 worth of all kinds of products for £3.30.

Sainsbury’s also sells £2 “Taste Me, Don’t Waste Me” fruit and veg boxes to help shoppers reduced food waste and save cash.

Food waste apps – food waste apps work by helping shops, cafes, restaurants and other businesses shift stock that is due to go out of date and passing it on to members of the public.

Some of the most notable ones include Too Good to Go and Olio.

Too Good to Go’s app is free to sign up to and is used by millions of people across the UK, letting users buy food at a discount.

Olio works similarly, except users can collect both food and other household items for free from neighbours and businesses.

Yellow sticker bargains – yellow sticker bargains, sometimes orange and red in certain supermarkets, are a great way of getting food on the cheap.

But what time to head out to get the best deals varies depending on the retailer. You can see the best times for each supermarket here.
