EastEnders’ Nigel Bates reveals heartbreaking truth about dementia battle as soap teases another comeback after 27 years
NIGEL Bates has revealed the heartbreaking truth about his dementia battle in EastEnders – as the soap teased another big comeback.
Viewers were delighted to see Nigel – played by Paul Bradley – return to Albert Square on Christmas Eve 2024 – after 26 years away.
Nigel Bates has revealed the heartbreaking full story tied to his dementia diagnosis[/caption] He opened up to new friend Yolande Trueman[/caption] Nigel married Julie in the BBC soap’s 1990s era[/caption]In recent scenes, it was revealed that Nigel had been diagnosed with dementia.
Sat with Yolande (Angela Wynter) in the launderette, he opened up about his situation.
Nigel previously said his wife Julie (Karen Henthorn) left him for another man.
After hearing about diagnosis, Yolande assumed Julie left Nigel for selfish reasons and questioned how someone could do such a thing.
It turned out Julie didn’t know about her husband’s condition to begin with.
Nigel explained: “When I got the diagnosis, I went home, packed a bag and walked out.
“No note, no goodbyes, just vanished.”
He continued: “The doctor didn’t know how quickly my symptoms would develop.
“I had to act while I still could – while I still had a choice.”
Yolande asked Nigel if that meant he’d been unhappy in his marriage – but he firmly denied this.
Nigel said: “My illness, I’ve got the easy part. I won’t know the end’s coming but Julie…
“If I’d stayed, she’d have had to watch me shrinking away.
“Sometimes, me not even remembering who she is. I couldn’t do that to her.”
Later on, the pair had another heart-to-heart in Dot Cotton’s (June Brown) old kitchen.
As he sat there, Nigel recalled happy memories with “Mrs C”, while Yolande offered her new friend some comfort through prayer.
Earlier this week, EastEnders aired a surprise voice cameo for Julie, who was last physically seen in 1998.
She begged: “Nigel, it’s Julie again. I don’t know if you got my last message or…
Is it ageing or dementia?
Dementia – the most common form of which is Alzheimer’s – comes on slowly over time.
As the disease progresses, symptoms can become more severe.
But at the beginning, the symptoms can be subtle or mistaken for normal memory issues related to ageing.
The US National Institute on Aging gives some examples of what is considered normal forgetfulness in old age, and dementia disease.
You can refer to these above.
For example, it is normal for an ageing person to forget which word to use from time-to-time, but difficulting having conversation would be more indicative of dementia.
Katie Puckering, Head of Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Information Services team, previously told The Sun: “We quite commonly as humans put our car keys somewhere out of the ordinary and it takes longer for us to find them.
“As you get older, it takes longer for you to recall, or you really have to think; What was I doing? Where was I? What distracted me? Was it that I had to let the dog out? And then you find the keys by the back door.
“That process of retrieving the information is just a bit slower in people as they age.
“In dementia, someone may not be able to recall that information and what they did when they came into the house.
“What may also happen is they might put it somewhere it really doesn’t belong. For example, rather than putting the milk back in the fridge, they put the kettle in the fridge.”
“Listen, Nigel, I promise I’m not cross, whatever reason you walked out and disappeared, I just really need to know if you’re alright mate.
“I miss you. I love you, Nigel.”
Could viewers soon be seeing Julie back on the Square?
EastEnders airs on BBC One and iPlayer.

BROOKE Shields has revealed she was “dumbfounded” after a surgeon performed vaginal rejuvenation on her without consent.
Brooke, 59, spoke out about the invasive procedure in an interview with US Weekly ahead of the release of her upcoming book Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old: Thoughts on Aging as a Woman.
Brooke Shields has bravely spoken about an unwanted vaginal procedure[/caption] Brooke’s new book is full of candid insight[/caption]Though she admitted to being embarrassed sharing the intimate story, she said she wanted to do so to instigate change around women’s health.
The incident happened while she was having surgery to reduce the length of her labia [labiaplasty] which had been causing bleeding and discomfort.
Following the operation, the surgeon boasted about giving her an extra treatment.
Model and actress Brooke said: “It felt like such an invasion — such a bizarre, like, rape of some kind.
“Nothing pointed toward this need to be tighter or smaller or firmer or younger, especially there.”
Vaginoplasty, which is often carried out for sexual reasons, tightens the vagina and is irreversible.
Brooke said she felt shame and kept the unwanted procedure secret from her husband, Chris Henchy, 60, for a long time.
The movie star has daughters Rowan, 20, and Grier, 18, with Henchy and last year sparked controversy when she revealed she still shared shared a bed with them.
She told SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show: “My younger daughter just turned 18. You know, the minute my husband is on any type of work trip or gone or something, you know, they still sleep in the bed with me.
“We still watch rom-coms. They’re my babies and they will never not be.”
Both Rowan and Grier began college in the autumn, prompting Brooke to admit she wasn’t ready for them to leave home.
She said: “Yeah, I’ve been avoiding thinking of it because people will say to me, ‘Oh, you’re gonna be so relieved,’ and I just don’t see it happening.
“I was like, ‘Well, they’re still gonna come back,’ and by the way, the cost of just living in this city is so prohibitive anyways that it may work in my favor.”
It took Brooke a long time to tell husband Chris Henchy about it[/caption]What is vaginal rejuvination?

Jimmy Carter was the oldest living US President after the death of George H.W. Bush in 2018.
Carter was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia – the same place where he ultimately died.
According to his biography on the White House website: “Peanut farming, talk of politics, and devotion to the Baptist faith were mainstays of his upbringing.”
He was a naval officer for seven years and became a submariner.
He rose to the rank of lieutenant before he left the Navy when his father died in 1953, and he saw it as his responsibility to take over the family farm.
He soon jumped into politics after being elected to the Georgia State Senate.
In 1970, with the help of his wife, Rosalynn, he was elected the Governor of Georgia.
In 1976, Carter beat out then-President Gerald Ford for the Oval Office, which he occupied from 1977 to 1981.
During his presidency, Carter was known for his compassionate approach to politics.
Domestically, he created 8 million jobs, many of which went to women, African Americans, and Hispanics.
He expanded the national park system and created the Department of Education and the Department of Energy.
Internationally, he soared and, in 2002, was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for his work in helping to create the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.
After his presidency, Jimmy and Rosalynn founded the Carter Center, a non-profit center that helps humanitarian causes around the globe.
They also were heavily involved with Habitat for Humanity.
What was Jimmy Carter’s cause of death?
Jimmy Carter died on Sunday 29, December, 2024 nearly two years after going into hospice care. He had been treated for cancer and spent 19 years in hospice care.
An official cause of death was not announced, but the ex-President battled stage 4 melanoma back in 2015.
At the time of his death, son Chip released a heartfelt statement confirming the death of his father.
He said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love.
“My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs.
“The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

In 2015, he announced he beat cancer, but in 2019, his health began to suffer again.
He chose hospice care over continuing medical treatment, the Carter Center announced on Saturday, February 18, 2023.
Carter leaves behind his four children with his late wife Rosalynn, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Rosalynn passed away on November 19, 2023, at 96 years old.

Jimmy Carter’s funeral began at 10am EST at the Washington National Cathedral with his casket arriving as living former and present commander-in-chiefs welcomed him.

TOP Gear star Richard Hammond is splitting up with his wife, Mindy, with whom he shares two daughters.
According to a source, The Sun reports that Mindy, a newspaper columnist, demanded the divorce saying she “wanted him gone”.
As a result, the Grand Tour presenter says that their family will be “structured differently”. Here’s what we know about his daughters.
Who are Richard Hammond’s daughters?
Richard’s oldest daughter Izzy is his podcast partner-in-crime, as they both co-present Who Are We Now.
The hit series dives into men’s mental health issues and how to successfully raise children in the modern day.
Izzy was born in 2001, just before her parents got married a year later.
As of January 2025, she has over 60,000 followers on Instagram and was interviewed with her dad on ITV’s Lorraine.
So far, Izzy has not posted anything regarding her parents’ split.
The couple released a statement, saying: “A little update from us; this Christmas we were together as a family and this year we will still be a family but just structured a bit differently.
“Our marriage is coming to end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters.
“We will always be in each other’s lives and are proud of the family we created.
“We won’t be commenting further and sincerely hope that our privacy and that of our children will be respected at this time. With Love, Richard and Mindy”.
In the past, the podcaster opened up about being four years old when her dad had a horror crash in 2006.
She said: “Us as a family as well, we spent a long time talking about his brain. We had to.
“It’s been sort of keeping an eye on it, his behaviour, how he’s thinking, how he’s acting, how he’s feeling…
“Because obviously he recovered in hospital, but when he was back home that was very much mainly my mum just keeping an eye on him, making sure he was okay and being very open about how he felt.”
Richard has shared several stories about his daughter’s sense of humour, including one occasion where she “humiliated” him and James May in KFC.
He spoke about the incident, which took place after Richard had left Top Gear with his co-presenters, on the Fueling Around podcast.
He said: “After we finished the show James had come over to stay with me for a few days.
“We’d gone to Kentucky Fried Chicken to get lunch for everyone with Izzy.
“We got to the front of the queue, put our order in, and James typically said: ‘Oh, oh, I’ll pay Hammond’ and I said ‘no, no mate, I’ll pay’ and he said ‘no, no, no I’ll pay.’
“And there was a pause, just when the whole restaurant had gone quiet, and Izzy said: ‘Well technically lads, I should pay as you haven’t got a job between you’.
“And the place detonated with laughter.”
Out of the limelight
Like Izzy, Willow hasn’t commented on the situation.
She generally keeps out of the public eye more than her older sister, choosing not to appear on Who Are We Now.
However, she has nearly 15,000 followers on Instagram and often shares snaps with her family.
Richard shared that he believed both of his daughters had been approached to feature on ITV’s dating show Love Island.
He said that he doubted they would ever do the show, but acknowledged that they were both adults.
Journalist mum
Izzy and Willow’s mum is famous in her own right, just like their TV presenter dad.
Amanda “Mindy” Hammond is a journalist and columnist for The Express, who writes about her life.
She detailed the Hammond family’s experience during the COVID lock-down and even described how she gave their dog a “radical” hairdo.
The journalist also opened up about her battle to wake her husband from his coma, following his horror crash in 2006.
When he awoke, she quickly realised that his memory was not the same as it had been before.
Mindy told The Telegraph: “It was disconcerting when, early after the crash, Richard looked at me from his hospital bed and said, ‘You’re lovely, but you’re not my wife.’
“When I corrected him, he responded, ‘No, you’re not my wife, my wife is French’.
“Indeed, when he was allowed home five weeks later, it became clear that Richard’s memory loss was no short-term affliction.”
Richard recovered his memories of his wife, but fears the long-term impact of the crash.
He revealed that he worries that the crash may have led to memory conditions including dementia.
