Cases of little-known hMPV virus surging in China are ‘increasing’ in the UK – are you at risk?

IMAGES of crowded hospitals in China shared on social media are fueling fears of a new Covid-like outbreak as cases of a mysterious winter virus spike.

Cases of hMPV, officially called human metapneumovirus, are now also rising in the UK, stoking fears even further.

The UK has also seen a rise in cases of the virus[/caption]

The latest UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) data, covering the week of 23 to 29 December 2024, shows a slight increase in cases.

By the end of 2024, virus activity was at a “medium” level, with positive cases at 4.5 per cent.

“So far the peak positivity is a little over what it was this time last year,” Prof Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia, explained.

“So there is no major difference to usual infection positivity rates – unless they continue to increase in the coming weeks.

“Overall, I don’t think there are currently any signs of a more serious global issue.”

Chinese authorities have confirmed a rise in cases among children under 14.

The situation in the UK is similar, with the highest positivity rate seen in children under five, at 10 per cent.

The virus can progress to bronchitis or pneumonia, particularly in those most at risk – babies and the elderly.

Recent images of overcrowded hospitals in China, with masked patients and IV drips, are circulating on social media, evoking memories of the pandemic.

Other countries like India, Kazakhstan, and Malaysia have also reported cases.

UK health officials have stressed that hMPV isn’t like Covid-19 and has been around for decades since its discovery in the Netherlands.

Most people have had hMPV by the time they are five years old and catch it again throughout their lives.

Prof Sir Andrew Pollard from Oxford Vaccine Group added: “The reports of respiratory infections in China in the past few days appear to be attributed to both influenza and this human metapneumovirus.

“This is rather similar to the situation in the UK this week.”

The NHS is currently buckling under a tidal wave of flu, with cases quadrupling in just a month.

Casualty departments are overflowing into corridors and at least a dozen hospitals across the country have declared critical incidents.

Official data shows that around 5,000 beds in the health service were occupied by flu patients as of the end of the year.

HMPV symptoms: high temperature, sore throat, cough, runny or blocked nose, difficulty breathing.

The virus is forming a ‘quad-emic‘ of winter illnesses, adding pressure on NHS services alongside norovirus, RSV, and Covid.

While hMPV generally causes a mild illness similar to the common cold, very young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, are at increased risk of severe illness.

HMPV symptoms

According to the American Lung Association, HMPV causes symptoms such as:

  • runny or blocked nose
  • cough
  • A sore throat
  • A high temperature – signs include your back or chest feeling hotter than usual, sweatiness and shivering (chills)
  • Aifficulty breathing

If a more serious infection occurs (such as pneumonia or bronchiolitis) it may also cause:

  • Cough with phlegm
  • Chest pain when coughing
  • Shortness of breath
  • An achey body
  • Feeling very tired
  • Loss of appetite
  • Wheezing

England’s Luke Shaw shrugs off backlash to leaked TikTok with Molly-Mae as pals drank £200 tequila at New Year party

ENGLAND footballer Luke Shaw has shrugged off backlash over miming “your mum’s on benefits” for a TikTok trend – despite being paid £150,00 a week while injured, according to a pal.

The 29-year-old came under fire for starring in the clip with his partner Anouska Santos‘s close pal Molly-Mae Hague at a New Year’s Eve bash where friends drank shots from a £200 bottle of tequila.

The controversial video was met with anger from fans who said it made them “sick in their mouth” after the player’s lengthy spell on the sidelines.

But those close to the Manchester United defender say he’s “grown a thick skin” in response to online hate – and his focus remains on getting match fit.

One pal told us: “Luke Shaw is used to the backlash he gets on a daily basis and has people joking around with him about the fact he gets paid more for being off the pitch than he does on the pitch as he’s always injured.

“Even though the TikTok video was filmed at a private gathering, it ended up going viral, but Luke didn’t have a problem with it.

“To him, it was just a bit of light-hearted fun.

“He’s so use to the abuse he doesn’t let it bother him.

“Everyone was in the mood to party and had a great night- with some drinking Class Azul Reposado – a really expensive tequila that’s a favourite with footballers at the moment.”

The TikTok was filmed to the trending music, Mugshot Freestyle (The Northern Boys Remix).

It was shot the same night as a video of Molly-Mae kissing her ex Tommy Fury was leaked to The Sun.

The Sun has reached out to his rep for comment.

Shaw has played just 98 minutes in 20 games so far this season – with the club sitting at 13th in the Premier League.

Man Utd insiders say he’s working hard to make a speedy return to full fitness after posting an emotional message to fans about suffering a setback.

“I’m absolutely devastated and it’s extremely tough to come to terms with reality at this moment in time,” he said on Instagram.

“I understand there is going to be people frustrated, angry, disappointed and I understand all of that. There is no one feeling that more than me at this moment in time..

“But what I can promise is I will do everything I can to come back better soon to help this club achieve its ambitions this season.”

The 29-year-old shares three children, Reign, Storie and Lumie with his long-term partner Anouska., who’s been one of Molly-Mae’s “rocks” in her inner circle of friends since her split from Tommy.

Shaw signed for Man Utd in 2014 for a then world-record £30million transfer fee.

Irish people warned to avoid major beauty spot due to heavy snow as roads ‘impassable’

IRISH people have been warned to avoid a major beauty spot due to heavy snow and treacherous road conditions.

Wicklow County Council has asked people to stay away from the Wicklow Mountains this week.

ROLLING NEWS
The Sally Gap at the Wicklow mountains will remain closed today[/caption]

The council confirmed that Sally Gap will remain closed and several mountain roads are impassable because of snow and ice affecting the area.

Gardai also reported issuing 15 fines to drivers for improper parking on the narrow roads around the Sally Gap yesterday.

In a social media post, Wicklow County Council acknowledged the appeal of the scenery, but urged people to stay away.

They said: “An Garda Síochána in Roundwood, have issued fines to the drivers of 15 cars including these – parked on the narrow roads around the Sally Gap yesterday.

“This prevents our gritters and other road-clearing machinery been able to do their job effectively.

“We understand that people want to take in the snowy scenery but please help us out and be responsible.

“The area is impassable so please avoid it, thank you.”

Wicklow County Council also shared that road crews have been working since 3am this morning to clear roads and grit surfaces.

It comes as a Status Orange low temperature and ice weather warning was in place for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wicklow, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster and Connacht last night.

Temperatures were down as low as -6C in some places last night with concerns this morning over lingering ice, frost and freezing fog.

Issuing the urgent advice for road users the RSA said: “With extreme low temperatures persisting and hazardous conditions such as frost, ice, fog and lying snow affecting roads nationwide, the Road Safety Authority is renewing its call for all road users to remain vigilant and exercise caution.

“Even treated surfaces can remain dangerous particularly as the effectiveness of sanding and gritting is being hampered by rain and sleet showers.

“Road users are asked to treat every road as treacherous in the context of widespread black ice, make only essential journeys, take it slowly and allow extra time for travel to reduce risks for all and to relieve the pressure on the emergency services.”

Low surface temperatures have been reported on roads across the country this morning with snow still visible along the edges of many, particularly in the south.

And congestion on the M50 this morning only caused more travel chaos for commuters amid already difficult travelling conditions.

MET EIREANN CAUTION CALL

And with daytime temperatures today staying below freezing at -1C to 4C Met Eireann have issued their own warning for road users.

Senior Met Eireann forecaster Gerry Murphy warned road users to exercise caution as the combination of freezing fog and ice will make roads dangerous.

He explained: “Freezing fog…can reduce visibility even further, and can be very dangerous.

“So people need to be very aware to take great care with regard to freezing fog, as well as the fact that there is literally a widespread frost and ice across the country.”
