Vincent Assafuah questions feasibility of Mahama’s E-Levy cancellation within 120 days
Vincent Ekow Assafuah has raised critical questions about the feasibility of President John Dramani Mahama’s ambitious promise to cancel the E-Levy and other taxes within his first 120 days in office. The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, expressed scepticism, pointing out that such commitments while appealing during campaigns, may face significant practical challenges in […]

Luke Littler congratulated on PDC World Darts Championship win by local bus firm… but they get his name wrong
LUKE LITTLER has been congratulated for his darts success by a local bus company – but they spelt his name wrong.
The teen sensation created history when he became the youngest winner of the World Darts Championship last week.
Littler became champion of the world last week[/caption]He moved up to second in the world and received a £500,000 jackpot for his achievement.
And in his local town Warrington buses paid tribute to Littler in their own way, but dropped a massive clanger.
Instead of showing the destination and bus number, the screen at the above the windscreen read: “Congratulations, Luke Litter! [sic]. World Champion.”
Fans were quick to point out the misspelling of his surname with one saying: “Should have gone to Specsavers.”
Littler is now preparing to defend the Bahrain Masters title he won last year.
And he is already targeting defending his Worlds title after his historic win last week.
He said: “If I can go back-to-back, it would mean the world.
“Leading up to it (last year), I thought if I could be in the top four, I’d be happy, but obviously, I finished first because of the way I played.

“But I will just have the same mindset going into it, if you make the play-offs, that is all that matters and just give it your all at the O2.”
Littler hit a nine-darter in last year’s Prem final against Luke Humphries and it would be a dream come true to complete one at Ally Pally.
He said: “I would have loved to hit a nine-darter in the World Championships.
“Obviously that is another record that I can try and break for years and years.
“When you’re playing so good, you can feel the nine coming.”
Antonin Kinsky needs just 18 minutes to show Tottenham fans what they’ve been missing after £12.5million transfer
IT took just 18 minutes for Antonin Kinsky to show off the fancy footwork Spurs have sorely missed from their goalkeeper in the last six weeks.
The confident Czech, signed on Sunday from Slavia Prague, performed a clever keepy-uppy to get himself out of the danger he had been put in by team-mate Radu Dragusin.
Antonin Kinsky had a debut to remember between the sticks for Spurs[/caption] The goalie looked sharp as Tottenham beat Liverpool 1-0[/caption]Romanian Dragusin had let a dangerous ball bounce, but instead of panicking, Kinsky cleverly lifted the ball over an advancing Diogo Jota and caught it.
It was a promising snapshot of his ball-playing ability which was on show here throughout his debut.
And one that will have come as a big relief to fans who have watched from behind their sofa as poor old Fraser Forster has attempted to play AngeBall in Guglielmo Vicario’s absence.
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has decided to persevere with playing out from the back ever since No1 Vicario fractured his ankle in November.
And though Forster has made some good saves in the meantime, playing smart, short passes under pressure is not his strong suit.
That was made abundantly clear when the 36-year-old made not just one but TWO horrendous errors that led to goals in the last round of the Carabao Cup last month, which Spurs just about won 4-3 against Manchester United, despite leading 3-0 at one point.
With Vicario not expected back until late February, Spurs decided to act and brought in 21-year-old Kinsky this month for £12.5million on a six-and-a-half-year deal.
His agent Viktor Kolar revealed how tough the negotiations were to get the deal over the line in an interview with Flashscore.
FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS
It included how chairman Daniel Levy himself flew over to Prague to get things moving alongside Spurs’ technical director Johan Lange.
Kolar said: “Our team was still sitting at a petrol station in Prague until almost 10 pm of December 31, because everything was closed on New Year’s Eve.
“The subsequent development was that on January 1, Daniel Levy flew in himself and the two-day negotiations in Prague began. He had Johan Lange with him.
“The negotiations were intense, stretching late into the night.
“But it worked, and I’m happy about that. It was a beautiful test to see if people and organizations this dominant can find their way to each other.”
Kolar also detailed how his client chatted the move over with Czech goalkeeping great Petr Cech before signing on the dotted line.
Kinsky then went on to become the most expensive Czech keeper ever, with his £12.5m deal surpassing the £10m Arsenal paid Chelsea for Cech in 2015.
Kolar added: “Toni can consult on things with Petr, and talk about the goalkeeping stuff.”
Kinsky was thrown straight in here against high-flying Liverpool for what was a pivotal match in Spurs’ season – and Postecoglou’s tenure.
The blond stopper looked cool throughout his bow – and not just in his short-sleeved keeper top.
His presence seemed to calm down an injury-hit defence which has seemed jittery of late too, with some accurate passes and solid saves.
There was one hairy moment soon after his keepy-uppy where he tried to play out from back and his pass hit Archie Gray but he got away with it.
But for the most part Kinsky seemed assured, summed up by how he smartly started the move which led to Dominic Solanke sliding Spurs ahead – only to be ruled out for offside.
Solanke shrugged off the disappointment by teeing up another blond bombshell in Spurs’ team, Lucas Bergvall, for an opener that did stand – much to Kinsky and his new team-mates’ delight.
Kinsky then produced his save of the night to turn an inventive flick from Liverpool sub Darwin Nunez round the post in stoppage time.
Postecoglou had said it was not just his footwork that convinced Spurs to sign the youngster – and so this stop proved.
Kinsky completed his debut with a warm embrace from his sister, who looked emotional in the stands next to supporters.
It is early days, but on this evidence Spurs fans can be confident that their new man between the sticks has what it takes to play the high-risk football their manager insists on.
Beloved shoe shop chain to shut store after 40 years on the high street
A BELOVED shoe shop chain is set to shut one of its stores after 40 years on the high street.
Blunts Shoes announced its store on Granby Street in Leicester’s city centre will close at the end of March.
Blunts Shoes in Leicester is closing after 40 years of operation[/caption]The footwear chain was first established in 1865 and had operated the store in the heart of the East Midlands’ largest city for four decades.
It made the announcement in a post on Facebook that read: “After 40 wonderful years, we are sad to announce the closing of our Blunts Shoes Leicester store.
“It has been an honour to serve this community, and we are truly grateful for your support and loyalty over the years.
“Please continue to support us at our Blunts Shoes Leicester Store which is confirmed to close at the end of March.”
The firm’s head office in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, said that footfall had been a factor in the decision to close the store.
Fans of the shop were quick to express their sadness, commenting under Blunts’ Facebook post.
Many described the announcement as “sad news”, tagging their friends to share the message.
The chain operates 10 other stores across the region under both the Blunts name and as United Footwear.
Pop star James Blunt had previously joked about owning the store ahead of a performance in the city in 2023.
This comes as a string of high street chains announced the closures of stores across the UK at the start of 2025.
The Body Shop, for example, has said it will pull down the shutters on five stores in areas across the UK this month.
Stores in Exeter, Plymouth, Horsham, Norwich, and Sheffield will all be shutting their doors for the final time on 15 January.
Popular supermarket Waitrose has also announced one of its sites in Hall Green, Birmingham will close permanently on 14 January after being open for more than half a century.
Waitrose claimed that “despite the best efforts” they were ultimately unable to find a way to “make the shop commercially sustainable.”
New Look has also confirmed one of its branches in Wickford, Essex will close in a matter of weeks amid rumours the chain is accelerating its mass store closure plans.
The store will welcome in customers for the final time on 24 January in a blow for the high street.
Why are retailers closing shops?
EMPTY shops have become an eyesore on many British high streets and are often symbolic of a town centre’s decline.
The Sun’s business editor Ashley Armstrong explains why so many retailers are shutting their doors.
In many cases, retailers are shutting stores because they are no longer the money-makers they once were because of the rise of online shopping.
Falling store sales and rising staff costs have made it even more expensive for shops to stay open. In some cases, retailers are shutting a store and reopening a new shop at the other end of a high street to reflect how a town has changed.
The problem is that when a big shop closes, footfall falls across the local high street, which puts more shops at risk of closing.
Retail parks are increasingly popular with shoppers, who want to be able to get easy, free parking at a time when local councils have hiked parking charges in towns.
Many retailers including Next and Marks & Spencer have been shutting stores on the high street and taking bigger stores in better-performing retail parks instead.
Boss Stuart Machin recently said that when it relocated a tired store in Chesterfield to a new big store in a retail park half a mile away, its sales in the area rose by 103 per cent.
In some cases, stores have been shut when a retailer goes bust, as in the case of Wilko, Debenhams Topshop, Dorothy Perkins and Paperchase to name a few.
What’s increasingly common is when a chain goes bust a rival retailer or private equity firm snaps up the intellectual property rights so they can own the brand and sell it online.
They may go on to open a handful of stores if there is customer demand, but there are rarely ever as many stores or in the same places.
Incredible moment newborn baby is rescued from migrant dinghy after mum gave birth on crowded raft in the Atlantic sea
A BABY boy was born on a migrant dinghy en route to Spain’s Canary Islands.
The vessel was first spotted off the island of Lanzarote on January 6, as Spain celebrated the Epiphany holiday, when local children traditionally receive presents from the Three Kings.
Spain’s sea search and rescue agency, shows a newborn baby (R) in the midst of migrants on board an inflatable boat[/caption] Spanish coast guards wearing white suits work on a rescue operation as they tow a rubber boat carrying migrants, including a newborn baby, off the island[/caption]When the coastguard ship arrived, it found the mother and baby both in good health. A total of 60 people were on board, including 14 women and four children.
Domingo Trujillo, the captain of the rescue vessel, told broadcaster TVE they knew there was a pregnant woman on board.
“The surprise was (that we found) a totally naked baby who was born 10, 15 or 20 minutes earlier,” he said.
The woman was lying on the floor of the crowded boat while the baby was in the hands of someone else near her, he recalled.
“I covered him up, took him here (to my chest) and patted him so that he would stop crying,” he said.
Medics onboard recommended the mother and baby be transferred to a hospital by helicopter.
Alvaro Serrano Perez, commander of the helicopter, told Reuters: “Being Three Kings Day this was the best gift we could have received.”
The seven Spanish islands off northwestern Africa’s Atlantic coast are struggling to absorb a surge in irregular migrants, mainly from Mali, Senegal and Morocco.
The archipelago hit an all-time annual high for a second year in a row with 46,843 arrivals in 2024, constituting 73% of the illegal migration to Spain, according to the latest data from the Interior Ministry.
