THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS
THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969.
Known as Primark outside Ireland, the company was the brainchild of Garfield Weston, who hired Dubliner Arthur Ryan to make his vision reality.
Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total.
However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region.
And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy.
Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
The retailer’s opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019.
It spans five floors and features Primark’s biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants.

2 weeks agoNews 1Comments Off on Full list of 1,542 locations as gardai launch 24-hour speeding crackdown & over 145k drivers fined for breaking limit
GARDAI will ramp up their efforts on road safety and launch a 24-hour crackdown on speeding, it has been confirmed.
Officers warned that the consequences of speeding can be “devastating” and confirmed that the national speed enforcement operation, marking National Slow Down Day, will begin tomorrow.
A road sign in County Meath which now means 60kmh instead of 80kmhBrian Lawless/PA WireGardai will be out on force for National Slow Down Day tomorrowGetty Images
The number of speed checkpoints will be dramatically increased while the operation is in place, with gardai hoping to shine a light on the dangers of speeding and ensure more people stick to the limits.
A garda spokesperson explained: “An Garda Siochana conducts a number of high profile National Slow Down Days every year.
“The aim of National Slow Down Days is to remind motorists of the dangers of speeding, encourage a national conversation on the impact of speeding, to increase overall compliance with speed limits in place nationwide and to deter and detect those that are intent on driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.
“To date in 2025 there have unfortunately been 24 fatalities on Irish roads in 23 Fatal Road Traffic Collision’s.
“This is a reduction of 12 deaths on the same period in 2024.”
In 2024, cops issued over 145,000 Fixed Charge Notices to motorists driving in excess of the speed limit, meaning nearly 400 people were detected breaking the limit by Garda and GoSafe every single day.
And the speed operation comes just a few days after new speed limits were introduced on hundreds of roads across the country.
Default speed limits on rural local roads decreased from 80kmh to 60kmh while national secondary roads saw limits fall from 100kmh to 80kmh.
Gardai today warned that breaking the speed limit endangers lives.
A spokesperson said: “Driving in excess of the legal speed limit, and/ or driving at an inappropriate speed for the prevailing road, weather and traffic conditions not only puts you at risk but also endangers the lives of others around you.
“When you speed, it reduces the potential reaction time to react to something unexpected on the road and there is an increase in the likelihood of losing control of your vehicle, which could lead to a serious or fatal accident.”
SPEED ENFORCEMENT ZONES
The crackdown tomorrow involves speed enforcement zones – and there are over 1,542 of them dotted across Ireland.
The speed enforcement zones were selected based on fatal and serious injury collision data from the last number of years after all roads nationally were assessed.
This determined the road sections in which safety cameras have the best opportunity to prevent future death and serious injury to road users.
You can view a full list of each zone’s location on the Garda website, with dozens of zones located in every single county.
Dublin’s M50, M1, M2, M3, M4 and M11 all have zones while other busy roads across the country such as the N40, the N7, the N12, the N13, the N14 and the N3 all feature on the list.
Drivers could also be caught speeding on the busy N55 in Cavan, N63 or N61 in Roscommon, N19 in Clare, N69 in Kerry, N24 in Limerick, N25 in Cork or on the N80 in Kildare.
Lesser-used roads like the R312, R374, R569, R440 and the R395 also feature on the map outlining the zones.
‘DEADLIER CONSEQUENCES’
Gardai warned people that the higher the speed, the greater the impact if you crash and said inappropriate speed is as much of a problem on Ireland’s roads as speeding over the limit.
A spokesperson explained: “National Slow Down Day encourages a conversation on speed and road safety.
“Conversations on road safety should not only take place in the aftermath of fatal road traffic collisions, this is too late; These conversations should take place every day.”
Officers urged employers to have a Road Safety conversation with their employees today, adding that they should foster good driving practices and allow sufficient time for work journeys.
Gardai told how one in 10 pedestrians hit by a car at 30kmh an hour will die while 50 per cent will die if the speed is increased to 50kmh.
Some nine out of 10 people hit by a car travelling at 60kmh will die.
Gardai said: “The faster the speed > the more severe the impact > the deadlier the consequences.
“Inappropriate Speed – for prevailing weather/traffic/ road conditions – is a problem as much as exceeding the speed limit.
“An Garda Siochana remains committed to improving road safety on our roads, but An Garda Síochána alone will not stop all Fatal Road Traffic Collision.
“An Garda Síochána continues to actively work with relevant partners as per the Government’s Road Safety Strategy 2021–2030 ‘a strategic, coordinated and multi-sectoral approach to road safety across government and key stakeholders will be critical to achieving a safer, better Ireland for all’.”

2 weeks agoNews 1Comments Off on Pep Guardiola and estranged wife Cristina Serra begin divorce proceedings with pair even using the same lawyer
MANCHESTER CITY boss Pep Guardiola and his estranged wife Cristina Serra have begun divorce proceedings – and are even using the same lawyer.
The couple announced their shock split in January after agreeing to end their 30-year relationship at showdown talks in Barcelona.
Pep Guardiola has split from wife Cristina after 30 years togetherRex
But they are determined to avoid an ugly court battle and remain on such good terms they will share the same legal team.
Sources say they have already agreed the initial terms of a multi-million pound settlement agreement that could be finalised in a matter of weeks.
Pep’s extraordinarily rare “one couple, one lawyer” divorce means the formal end of their marriage will not be contested by either side.
Respected Spanish journalist Lorena Vazquez, who broke the story of their split, revealed: “They want it above all to be friendly for the sake of their children.
“As you can imagine money is not going to be an issue and they have already agreed the initial terms to make sure this separation is the most cordial possible.
“They have a very good relationship, so much so that the same lawyer is arranging the whole thing.
“The divorce is on the way and is being left in the hands of people with their absolute trust.”
She told Spanish TV programme ‘Y Ahora Sonsoles’ the couple split after Pep signed a two-year extension at the Etihad to keep him at City until 2027.

Since then his reigning champions have been in freefall amid his worst spell as a manager.
City are 20 points adrift of league leaders – and Champions-elect Liverpool – after suffering a 2-0 home defeat to Arne Slot’s side on Sunday.
But as he begins the mammoth task of rebuilding his side, pals insist Pep is still clinging onto hope of an unlikely reconciliation.
He has previously been pictured wearing his wedding ring in a sign that he has not yet given up.
But sources say he is “more amenable” to the idea than fashion entrepreneur Cristina.
Their marriage is said to have hit the rocks five years ago after Cristina decided to return to Barcelona alone.
Since then they have lived separate lives as Pep chased sporting immortality in Manchester.
The couple first met when an 18-year-old Pep went to a fashion store owned by Cristina’s family to model some outfits by Spanish designer Antonio Miro.
At the time, he was playing for Barcelona’s B team, while she was an actress who had appeared on Spanish TV.
Pep’s sister Francesca once said: “He was very handsome, a good student, always getting good marks, the teachers drooled over him, he was already seductive when he was little.”
Cristina gave up acting to concentrate on her successful clothing business and is now said to be worth over £30million.
Meanwhile, Pep established himself as one of the best midfielders of his generation, winning multiple titles with Barcelona’s first team, before entering management.
He became the youngest manager to win the Champions League in 2009, lifting the most sought-after trophy in his first season in charge of Barcelona’s first team.
The demands of day-to-day management took their toll though, and in 2012 he quit as boss in order to take a year out.
He admitted: “I’m drained and I need to fill up.”
Cristina has since said she was “feeling great” after news of their split emerged but has refused to speak publicly about the break up.
Their influencer daughter Maria, 24, recently opened up about the lessons her parents have taught her.
She told a Spanish magazine: “My parents have always advised me to find what I am passionate about.
“They encourage me to try new things, to accept failure and to keep searching until I find my calling, because when I do, full dedication will come naturally.
“They also remind me that the most important thing in life is to love and be loved.
“In the end it all comes down to feeling loved.
“Even in situations where we feel out of place, they tell me to listen carefully to others, there is always something valuable to learn from each person we meet.”

2 weeks agoNews 1Comments Off on ‘They’re nasty, inappropriate & vulgar’ etiquette expert reveals 7 common items of clothing she absolutely hates
AN elegance coach has revealed seven items of clothing she absolutely hates as it makes women look “common.”
Anna Bey, who hosts coaching services, explained which garments and shoes you should avoid at all costs.
Instagram/annabeyElegance Anna Bey shared the clothing items she thinks you should avoid if you want to look classy[/caption]
GettyFirst up were jean hot pants, as seen on Carrie Underwood[/caption]
On herYouTube channel, which has 1.85million subscribers, she wrote: “If you want to look classy and have an elegant style aesthetic, DO NOT WEAR THESE THINGS.”
1. Hot pant shorts
When it comes to holidays or summer items, you should ditch having hot pant shorts in your 2025 wardrobe, according to Anna.
She shared: “Isn’t this nasty, or am I the only one who thinks that this is so inappropriate, so vulgar, and so rude?
“I just don’t understand how we can live in times where this is like, ‘Oh no, but this is normal, this is fine.’
“I personally don’t want to be so intimate with people that I have to really get into the nooks and crannies of their body parts—especially when we don’t even know each other. I don’t want to be that intimate with you.
“It’s the fact that when people are walking, they don’t realize that it’s actually going up their butt crack, and from behind, it is quite distracting that some women walk around like that.”
The elegance coach said she didn’t want to sound “uptight” but said “some boundaries are necessary among strangers.”
2. Cycling shorts
Next up was an item loved by celebrities from Hailey Bieber to Princess Diana.
Although the late royal was known for being a style icon, Anna said cycling shorts should be left out of your cupboard this year.
She argued: “The cycling shorts and the crop top don’t belong in the elegance department whatsoever.
PACycling shorts – as seen on Princess Diana – were also slammed by Anna[/caption]
“In fact, I personally don’t think they’re very flattering on anyone. Plus, it just looks weird.
“It’s almost like the athleisure trend is just here like a hemorrhoid—unable to leave us and constantly needing to reinvent itself year after year.”
Taking a swipe at Justin Bieber’s chic wife Hailey, she said: “Every time I do these videos, I always go and Google something like ‘Hailey Bieber, what is she wearing?’ because I always get so many new ideas of what to put on today’s list.”
3. Puffer bomber jacket
GC ImagesPuffer jackets were also a no for the elegance coach (as seen on Hailey Bieber)[/caption]
Another item loved by Hailey and a number of famous faces is a puffer bomber jacket.
Anna added: “That’s actually a piece of garment that I know is super popular right now, but I don’t think it belongs in the elegant aesthetic department either.
“In fact, I think it looks kind of weird.
“It almost feels like they’re just trying really, really hard to look cool, to look edgy.”
4. Crop top
SplashYou may not have to keep up with Kim Kardashian, as crop top were also banned[/caption]
The next clothing item on Anna’s banned list was crop tops, which are loved by Kim Kardashian.
The etiquette expert explained: “My pet peeve is the crop top.
“I cannot stand the crop top, and now the crop top has really become mainstream and oversaturated.
“Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s going anywhere, although I’m still here praying every morning, hoping that today, I won’t have to see it anymore.
“But no—I still see it every time I step outside my door.”
5. Muscle shirt
BackGridAnother Kim favourite was also barred – the muscle T-shirt[/caption]
Another item loved by Kim Kardashian on Anna’s avoid list is a “muscle T-shirt.”
Anna continued: “I think this is a garment that is very tricky to style, especially if you like to have a feminine aesthetic.
“The reason why it looks so masculine is because it cuts off here in the arms, which really widens the upper body.
“You basically look broader and, therefore, more masculine.”
She reasoned that ladies who have a more masculine or edgy aesthetic may find the T-shirt to be a good choice.
However, she said that on her channel she focuses on “elegant, classic, or feminine aesthetic.”
6. Hoodies
GettyThe etiquette expert was also not a fan of hoodies, which have been seen on numerous celebrities, including Khloe Kardashian[/caption]
Another item loved by millions is the “dear old hoodie”, according to Anna.
The elegance professional advised: “The hoodie set is basically a walking pajama in public. “Okay, I get it—yes, it looks very comfortable, but it also looks like you’re walking around in your loungewear in public.
“Some people even go to the office like that!
“Again, I don’t want to sound like someone who comes from the Middle Ages—maybe that’s what you think about me, I don’t know.
“But I just don’t think that this makes any sense. I think a little boundary is good to have.
“You might want to keep some things private.”
7. Over-the-knee boots
GC ImagesAnna also wasn’t a fan of over-the-knee boots, as seen on singer-songwriter Kesha[/caption]
Last but not least, Anna said you should avoid over-the-knee boots, if you don’t want to look “common”.
Specifically the high-heeled version.
Anna concluded: “I know that some petite ladies struggle with this kind of boot because it shortens the leg a little.
“The flat version is fine, but the problem is with the high-heeled version. It can easily look a little bit vulgar, right?
“I’ve certainly seen over the years how some ladies are able to style it in a way that looks really classy and sophisticated.
“But, unfortunately, it can get tricky. If you get the styling wrong, you will instantly look more on the cheaper side—it just looks less refined.”

2 weeks agoNews 1Comments Off on ‘We’re going to have a situation…’ – Ian Wright fears THREE Arsenal superstars could run down contract, including Saka
IAN WRIGHT has serious fears over the futures of three Arsenal stars – who he reckons could RUN DOWN their contracts with the club.
The north Londoners’ slim hopes of winning their first Premier League title since the 2003-04 season went up in smoke last weekend as they fell 11 points behind table-toppers Liverpool thanks to a 1-0 defeat to West Ham.

GettyAs do the current deals Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba are on[/caption]
The ending of the Gunners’ title hopes comes just weeks after manager Mikel Arteta failed to land a new striker to alleviate his attacking woes.
The decision prompted many of the Emirates faithful, including Wright, to question the club’s ambitions in the transfer market.
During the latest episode of Wrighty’s House podcast, he said: “When you’re talking about renewals with certain players, Saka, Gabriel [Magalhaes], Saliba, the way they’re moving now, I bet those renewals are all going to be slow,’ Wright said.
“We’re going to have a situation maybe like Liverpool with Trent, Salah and Virgil.
“If I’m one of these players, and their teams are going to be saying, ‘Let’s wait and see, we’ve got two years left so let’s wait and see who they get in the summer.
“‘I know the manager has signed again but let’s wait and see.’
“If they’re not going to get the kind of players that take us to the next step, look at Saliba. Real Madrid would take him tomorrow.

“Why not wait and see what’s going on in the summer to see the kind of players and calibre of player we’re signing. This is what the people upstairs need to be careful of.”
Wright, the Gunners’ former all-time leading goalscorer, believes his fears are also shared by Arteta.
He continued: “I’m sure Mikel will have told them that because he’s probably got the same kind of ambition.
“‘If you’re not going to give me the kind of players I need, I’m not going to be able to keep the players I’ve got here that are our best players, who are now running down their contracts.
“We haven’t even got into that conversation yet about these players.
“This summer and who comes is f***ing vitally important to these players.
“‘There’s a lot going on right now that needs to be unpacked by these people upstairs and they better get it right. They better get it right.”
Magalhaes, Saka and Saliba’s respective multi-million-pound contracts at the Emirates all expire in the summer of 2027.
Arsenal will be back in action on Wednesday night, travelling to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest.
