Very affordable beach city just four hours from the UK named top trending destination for 2025

A SEASIDE city near the UK has been named a top destination for 2025 by British Airways.

As part of their 2025 Travel Trends Report, searches for holidays to Agadir in Morocco boomed last month.

Make the most of the 300 days of sunshine too[/caption]

Compared to searches in January 2024, searches last month for the Moroccan city were up 308 per cent.

This beat a number of other European destinations such as as Crete (up 44 per cent) and Gibraltar (up 17 per cent).

Even places like Abu Dhabi (up 95 per cent) and Koh Samui (up 38 per cent) were not trending as highly as Agadir.

Andrew Flintham, Managing Director of British Airways Holidays, said: “Our third annual report provides some impressive insight on how UK consumers are looking to travel.

“Not only are they looking for new ways to optimise their time away, but there is a clear trend in travellers embracing traditional holiday elements with the likes of all-inclusive.”

It’s not just British Airways who fly to Agadir.

TUI is launching new flights to Agadir from Newcastle this summer while Jet2 has launched new flights from Bournemouth to Agadir.

But most airlines fly to the city, including Wizz Air from London Gatwick and Ryanair from London Stansted, Manchester and Birmingham.

Meryem Bennouna, the Moroccan National Tourist Office’s UK director, told TTG last year: “It’s a huge amount of new flights and they are also from different UK cities, including Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle.

“We’re in a very good place and super excited about the UK market – it’s increased exceptionally in comparison to last year and it’s very unique what’s going on.

“Tourism is going increase even more and in the UK market, in particular, we’re still very far from reaching its full potential.”

When it comes to Agadir, the city is just under four hours from the UK.

As Morocco‘s largest seaside resort, it has huge stretches of beaches with some popular with surfers.

Along with 300 days of sunshine, you can expect high temperatures even in winter, reaching highs of 25C.

Make sure to visit some of the city’s mosques[/caption]

It is affordable too – a study by Which? last year found Agadir to be one of the cheapest for package holidays.

Popular attractions include Souk El Had, one of the largest markets in Africa, as well as the many hammans in the city for an authentic Moroccan spa experience.

Seven night, all-inclusive breaks were on sale for as little as £300 at four-star resorts.

Otherwise the cheapest flights are with Ryanair, starting from £19.99, or Loveholidays have an all-inclusive week-long break from £299.

What is it like to stay in Agadir?

The Sun’s Deputy Travel Editor Kara Godfrey recently visited Agadir.

Rebuilt following a devastating earthquake in 1960, the sprawling city nestles against the Atlantic Ocean and its palm-lined wide roads feel more Miami than Morocco.

No wonder the South African country looks set to be a holiday hotspot as Brits look past Spain next year.

I’m staying in Taghazout, a surf town with an ever-growing number of modern beach-side resorts, just 13 miles north of Agadir and its sizzling souk.

One of the newest resorts is the five-star adults-only Pickalbatros White Beach, which features pristine white marble steps, manicured gardens and a huge airy lobby offering views of the beach through giant glass windows.

It’s affordable luxury at its finest, and the perfect place for a last-minute holiday with my closest gal pal.

If you fancy some other parts of Morocco, here is everything you need to know about the coastal city of Essaouira.

Or here is Taroudant which is often dubbed Little Marrakesh.

I was on Countdown and got a nasty shock on the Channel 4 set – keyboard warriors have no idea what it’s really like

COUNTDOWN star revealed the brutal reality behind the Channel 4 set – and keyboard warriors have no clue.

A former Countdown contestant opened up about the shocking truth of filming on Channel 4’s iconic show.

They reveal the harshness of online trolls and the real-life challenges they never see behind the scenes.

The participant appeared on the game show back in 2023, which was hosted by Colin Murray.

They revealed that the infamous ticking Countdown clock drove them to the edge.

With its loud tick-tock and the theme tune blasting as pressure mounted, it was a real nerve-wrecker for contestants trying to solve the puzzle.

Taking to a forum on Digital Spy, the former contestant wrote: “I can say from my trivial time on the show last year that it’s much easier when you’re sat at home, pausing as you please; much more relaxing than being in the studio, faced with cameras and feeling the pressure of the clock booming in each round (it’s not edited in, it plays whilst you’re there which caught me off guard a little when I was on).

“With that in mind, it’s easy to make mistakes, but submitting words such as ‘STROL’ and ‘SCON’ is quite something.”

The Sun previously spoke to former contestant Gary Woodward, who has appeared on Countdown nine times, and a TV source.

He unveiled surprising details about the Channel 4 hit – including how the camera crews would sneakily cover up mistakes.

Gary said: “When they don’t like a bit of recording they do it again to overlay that section during the edit.

This can be because the audio quality wasn’t perfect, if a presenter sneezed or made a mistake or cameras missed a cut.

“It’s easy to spot when they do this on Countdown.

“If the cameras cut back to the contestant while they are choosing a vowel or consonant, it’s normally because they have used a cover shot.”

Contestants have to been reshot too – especially if they pick a rude word.

A former audience member, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Sun: “There were a couple of retakes and the funniest one was when a guy said ‘pisser’ in the anagrams round.

Countdown hosts over the years

Since launching in 1982, Channel 4 game show Countdown has become a staple of daytime telly. There have been several presenters throughout the show's long history. Let's take a look back at who has hosted the iconic show.

  • Richard Whiteley (1982-2005): The original and longest-serving host, Richard helmed the programme for 23 years. As Countdown was the launch programme for Channel 4, the presenter and journalist was the first person to be seen on the channel. He died in 2005 at the age of 61.
  • Des Lynam (2005-2006): Originally from County Clare in Ireland, Des took over from Richard Whiteley after his death. He is known for hosting TV coverage of several sporting events including Wimbledon and the Grand National. He left the show after less than 18 months.
  • Des O’Connor (2007-2008): Another Des was next up, in the form of comedian and presenter Des O’Connor. The long-time TV chat show host was known for The Des O’Connor Show and Take Your Pick. He left Countdown to focus on entertainment projects. Des O’Connor died in 2020, aged 88.
  • Jeff Stelling (2009-2011): Known for his work presenting Gillette Soccer Saturday, Jeff became the fourth host of Countdown. He had reportedly previously been in consideration to replace Richard Whiteley. He left after three years to focus on football coverage.
  • Nick Hewer (2012-2021): Former public relations consultant Nick was one of Lord Sugar’s advisors for 10 years on The Apprentice. He became the new host of Countdown in 2012, appearing on both shows for two years. He ultimately left Countdown after nine years.
  • Anne Robinson (2021-2022): Best known as the original host of The Weakest Link, in 2021 Anne became the first female Countdown presenter. She left the programme a year later, having recorded 265 episodes.
  • Colin Murray (2022-present): Before being named the permanent Countdown host, Colin Murray had been appearing on a guest basis since 2020. He returned to the show following Anne Robinson’s departure.

“It was a great six-letter word but they couldn’t use it. I think it’s because they feared getting complaints.

“He still got the points but right at the end of filming they recorded him saying a more palatable six-letter word instead.”

Countdown viewers were shocked earlier this week as maths genius Dr. Tom Crawford stepped in for Rachel Riley.

Known for his mind-blowing math skills and viral YouTube videos, the Cambridge and Oxford boffin took a break from the camera to show off his intellect in a whole new way on the iconic show.

Countdown airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 2:10pm or stream on channel4.com.

Adam Thomas begs ‘take my pain away please’ in emotional rant – saying ‘f*** this disease’

He has been candid in documenting his condition on social media[/caption]

In the heartfelt message, Adam admitted that the disease has taken a toll on both his body and mind, making it difficult to maintain a consistent exercise routine.

He wrote: “This disease really does f**k with your head, especially when your trying to shift Some weight and get Into a routine of exercise! Constant battle constant set backs!!

“Just take my pain away please!! I’ve suffered enough now! Am really trying to hold myself together but it’s not easy!

“Just one of those days … keep fighting people… on the days where we can’t train … we have to take care of ourselves x self care and recovery.”

Earlier this month, Adam opened up about his agonising battle on Good Morning Britain, revealing the autoimmune disease has left him in daily pain for the past two and a half years.

During the interview, host Susanna Reid expressed her shock that someone as young as Adam could be suffering from arthritis, a condition typically associated with older age.

Adam shot to fame on Emmerdale in 2009, but now plays a P.E. teacher on Waterloo Road.

While chatting to Adam on the GMB sofa, Susanna explained: “We’re laughing about the fact that you would be a P.E. teacher but it actually impedes your movement, doesn’t it?”

Adam replied. “Yes definitely and yes I’ve been struggling with this autoimmune disease now for about two and a half years.

“It’s been tough. I’m not over-exaggerating when I say this but literally within two and a half years, every day I’ve been in pain.

“It’s difficult but now I feel like I’ve found – because I’ve been on so many different meds and trying so many different things, back and forth from doctor’s and hospitals.”

Adam revealed he is trying out a new “carnivore diet” and says it has helped.

He said: “I’ve noticed a huge difference, especially within the past couple of weeks.

“It’s given me a little bit of hope now.

“I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I’m feeling the best way I’ve felt for a while.”

He continued: “I feel like the inflammation is going down a little bit and I’m getting my life back which is the most important thing.”

He also said he believes he may have inherited the condtion from his late dad, but they never spoke about it.

Adam recently screamed in pain as he filmed himself injecting his treatment.

He said last October: “The pain is pretty unbearable at the moment, it’s as if my whole body is seizing up!!

What are the symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis?

Pain – Patients could suffer with a throbbing and aching pain in their joints. According to the NHS, it may often feel worse in the mornings or after a period of inactivity.

Stiffness – Joints affected by the condition can feel stiff and inflexible. For example, you may not be able to fully bend fingers or form a fist in an affected hand.

Swelling, warmth and redness – Joint linings are also affected by rheumatoid arthritis and they could become inflamed. Joints could then swell, and become hot or tender to touch.

Other symptoms: These can often include tiredness, lack of energy, a high temperature, sweating, a poor appetite and weight loss

“The pain was bad before, but it’s a lot worse now… how why???”

Addressing his treatment, he added “Now I wish I never came off the methotrexate because I would take that pain to this every day of the week!!

“I’ve just started my new medication today which takes 12 weeks to take effect and even then it might not work so am not too sure what I can do to ease the pain until then??

“I’ve had my steroid injections and it literally lasted a week.”

And, last year, he was left “in tears” after updated medication left him “wiped out”.

The TV star then told how his son was playing a part in looking after him.

EastEnders fans spot major clue James Bye was AXED from soap and didn’t want to leave – did you see it?

EASTENDERS fans have spotted a major clue that James Bye was AXED from the soap – did you see it?

Viewers were devastated when his character Martin Fowler was killed off in the soap’s 40th anniversary live episode.

James, 41, discussed his exit on The One Show with presenters Alex Jones and Roman Kemp.

Fans believed they’d picked up on a hint suggesting James had been axed – rather than choosing to leave.

One wrote on X: “After watching James’ interview I’m even more convinced that he didn’t want to leave EE and that it was entirely the producers’ decision.

“He quickly switched from saying “when I was told” to “when we made the decision.” If it wasn’t his choice I’m even more angry now.”

Another wrote: “it definitely comes across like the decision was made and he was told.

“i’m guessing he’s been instructed to make it seem like a joint decision because that sounds better.”

While a third penned: “Yeah that’s exactly what I took it from it..doesn’t seem like he wanted to leave more like he was told which is very upsetting if it’s the case, another iconic character killed off, it was a bad decision.”

James was asked whether he’d kept Martin’s fate a secret before the live episode went out.

He replied: “I was sworn to keep it completely secret. The people who are involved in the storyline, they were told not long after I was.

“I told the exec producer after he told – after we sort of made the decision – I was like, you have to let me tell Lacey. Everyone else, you can tell.

“That was the most difficult conversation. Other than telling my wife, she wasn’t over the moon with it to be fair.”

EastEnders fans watched as Martin stayed behind in an explosion destroyed Queen Vic to rescue his true love Stacey Slater.

As they went to leave, the fruit-and-veg flogger’s legs were crushed by a falling steel beam.

The live episode saw Martin declare his love for Stacey and he asked her to marry him again.

EastEnders' 40th anniversary cameos so far

With the 40th anniversary of EastEnders coming up, fans are looking forward to some more incredible cameos from iconic faces of Walford's past. But who have we had so far?

Tracy-Ann Oberman – Oberman returned as Chrissie Watts, a character she last played nearly two decades ago.

Paul Bradley – Bradley returned as Nigel Bates, a character he last played over 25 years ago.

Micheal French – French returned as David Wicks, a character he last played two decades ago.

Patsy Palmer – Palmer returned as Bianca Jackson, a character she last played in 2019.

Ricky Groves – Groves returned as Garry Hobbs, a character who has not been seen since 2009.

Cliff Parisi – Parisi returned as Minty Peterson, a character who was last seen on the square in 2010.

Ross Kemp – Kemp has returned to play Grant Mitchell, a character he first played in 1990. The BBC has described Kemp’s storyline as “explosive”. Kemp said it was an “absolute honour” to return to the show.

Other aspects of the EastEnders 40th anniversary celebration include: A wedding between fan favorites, A huge explosion at the Queen Vic, and A live interactive episode.

Paramedic Skinner (Luke Baker) privately told Stacey that Martin had crush syndrome – a life threatening predicament occurring after injury to skeletal muscle.

When paramedics lifted the beam, Martin succumbed to his injuries and passed away, in a distraught Stacey’s arms.

Upcoming scenes will see Martin’s daughter Bex (Jasmine Armfield) and niece Vicki (Alice Haig) return to Walford for his funeral.

EastEnders airs on BBC One and iPlayer.
