Darby’s day as Chloe leads Dublin ladies to low-scoring win over Mayo at blustery Parnell Park
IT WAS Darby day at Parnell Park as Dublin’s Chloe Darby helped seal an NFL Division 1 opening-round win over Mayo.
Darby kicked 1-3 — with Rebecca McDonnell also finding the net — to get the reign of joint-managers Paul Casey and Derek Murray off to a winning start.
Dublin captain Carla Rowe and Mayo counterpart Danielle Caldwell were withdrawn from their respective line-ups.
And the hosts carved out an early lead through Niamh Hetherton and Sophie McIntyre.
The Westerners initially struggled but opened their account when full-forward Sinéad Walsh knocked over an 11th-minute free.
Yet despite registering a number of early wides, the Sky Blues increased their advantage to three points when Jodi Egan and Darby — from a free — found the target.
Another Walsh effort kept Mayo in touch, only for the Jackies to create daylight when McDonnell smashed the ball to the net from a tight angle on 23 minutes.
But just when it seemed Dublin were in control, their lead was wiped out after Walsh followed up a brace of frees with a superb 29th-minute goal.
The sides were deadlocked on 1-4 apiece at the change of ends but Darby netted less than 20 seconds after the restart.
Mayo gained a temporary numerical advantage when Sky Blues midfielder Grace Kos was sin-binned on 35 minutes, but Liam McHale’s charges fell further adrift following points by Egan and Darby.
Mayo No 6 Sherin El Massry kicked a point just before Kos’ return.
But the Westerners were then reduced to 14 players in the final quarter when Ella Brennan fouled stand-in Dublin skipper Leah Caffrey.
Points from Walsh — who finished with 1-5 — and Aoife Geraghty did reduce Mayo’s deficit to two late on, before Darby split the posts from a free to secure victory.

Casey’s third time in the villa says it all – Love Island All Stars needs a rest, says Jessie Wynter
LOVE Island star Jessie Wynter has slammed this year’s All Stars series after watching Casey O’Gorman in the villa for a third time.
Casey has made another comeback to the ITV2 show as a bombshell but Jessie thinks his return signals that it’s time for “a break”.
Jessie Wynter has slammed this year’s All Stars series of Love Island[/caption] The Aussie believes the return of Casey O’Gorman signals it’s time for ‘a rest’[/caption]The Aussie beauty appeared in Love Island alongside Casey during his first stint, watched him on All Stars last year and cannot believe he is back again.
Speaking to The Sun on behalf of Slotscalendar, Jessie said she feels this year’s All Stars series ‘isn’t giving fans what they want’ as a result.
Jessie, 28, said: “I think it’s very early on but I don’t think it’s hitting the same as last year.
“They use the title All Star. Casey’s been in the villa three times.
“I thought All Stars was meant to be a big hurrah, people we haven’t seen for a while?
“Love Island producers, what’s going on here?”
Casey first appeared in Love Island in 2023, before returning for the 2024 All Stars series.
The 28-year-old has once again strolled back into the South African villa as an early bombshell.
Upon his return, Casey immediately came under fire from Love Island alumni and new housemate Kaz Crossley.
Kaz let rip at Casey and accused him of treating Love Island girls badly, including her close friend Georgia Harrison.
Jessie says: “Casey does bring the drama.
“Since he’s left the villa, he has been hooking up with other islanders so he’s giving Ex Island.
“Where he goes the drama follows and I think the producers love that.”
But speaking about the future of the show, she added: “I think the fact that Casey has gone into All Stars two times in a row says enough.
“I think next year, if they want it to be a big success, they almost do need to give it a rest.
“It’s called All Stars. We want to see an All Stars cast rather than scrounge islanders together and put them all in there.
“It’s not what people want to see.”

Jessie is still in a relationship with Will Young, a farmer who she met on Love Island.
Satisfyingly the couple have proved Casey wrong, after he branded Jessie “fake” while they were all in the villa together.
Casey was also called a “snake” in February 2023 after he was accused of “encouraging” Will to have his head turned by Casa Amor bombshell Layla Al-Momani.
At the time, one fan raged: “Casey moving like a snake I see Lmaoo.”
Another added: “Casey is egging on Will.”
This year, Casey has coupled up with 2017 islander Gabby Allen.
However, earlier this week fans were convinced Casey already “wanted out” of his romance with the blonde beauty.

Inside Jacqueline Jossa’s rollercoaster marriage to Dan Osborne as she denies split – from Love Island DMs to money rows
JACQUELINE Jossa’s marriage to Dan Osborne has been anything but smooth sailing.
While the EastEnders actress, 32, has denied recent rumours of a split, her tumultuous relationship with the former Towie star, 33, is back in the spotlight.
Jacqueline Jossa’s marriage to Dan Osborne has been anything but smooth sailing[/caption] The couple have been forced to deny a split once again[/caption]The star was even spotted at the gym this week without her wedding ring amid rumours she and her husband are having trouble.
Love Island All Stars’ Gabby Allen, 32, also broke her silence on a feud with Jacqueline as she admitted she’s no longer speaks to Dan, who she was pictured in 2018 getting close with on a yacht.
But the couple have faced several other challenges over the years, including further cheating allegations, social media scandals and failed vow renewals.
Gabby’s comments
Love Island All Stars’ Gabby Allen, lso broke her silence on a feud with Jacqueline[/caption]Gabby, who is hoping to find her dream man as she returns to the villa, said she is no longer in contact with Dan.
She told The Sun: “That literally hasn’t crossed my mind for years.
“I feel like I’m so far removed from that situation now, that I don’t know, it’s mad that people would like even bring it up but I suppose people are interested in that aren’t they?
“I mean me and Dan were just mates, but we weren’t that good mates to like warrant continuing a friendship.”
The blonde beauty went on to wish the couple well and said she had hoped that everyone had moved on.
“It’s like that was a long time ago and we knew each other for a very short amount of time and that was it,” she shared.
“I just hope that, like, that doesn’t cause issues for, like, them because it was a very long time and I feel like everybody’s moved on and I hope they’re really happy.”
What happened between Dan and Gabby?
Jacqueline walked out on Towie star Dan after learning he’d sent Gabby a flirty message in 2020.
Love cheat Dan contacted Gabby in April that year but she did not respond.
Shortly afterwards, I’m A Celebrity winner Jacqueline secretly took out a six-month lease on a new property and moved out of the family home.
Jacqueline and Dan had a series of bust-ups while isolating before the actress moved out.
A source said: “Jacqueline has always been suspicious about Dan and other women — especially Gabby. Everything has been magnified in lockdown.
“Dan took a shine to Gabby back on that yacht but she swears blind nothing ever, ever happened — and is furious about being dragged into his mess yet again.
“They last texted shortly before Dan went to Australia to support Jac in the jungle.
“But that was all platonic from Gabby’s side.
“He did send her a suggestive message over Instagram last month which she never responded to.
“Gabby has zero interest in Dan, and she wants no association with him.
“However Dan’s intentions seem less clear.
“Jacqueline has rented a property near her parents and spent thousands on new furniture to make it feel like home.
“But Dan has begged for one final chance, and of course she wants to fight for her marriage for the sake of their kids.”
Marbella controversy
The rumours involving Gabby were just one chapter in a series of controversies that have plagued Jacqueline and Dan since they first got together in 2013.
The couple married in 2017 after a two-year engagement, tying the knot at a Cheshire manor house.
However, their marriage quickly faced challenges.
Photos of Gabby and Dan looking close on a yacht added fuel to the fire, but Dan dismissed the speculation, saying he was simply “speaking and laughing with a friend”.
Despite his explanations, the incident caused tension in his marriage to Jacqueline, who later admitted the situation had deeply affected her.
Gabby’s recent comments have brought those memories back into the public eye, with a source close to Jacqueline telling The Sun, “Gabby being back in the spotlight is the last thing Jac and Dan need and will no doubt bring back memories for Jac.”
At the time, Gabby’s ex-boyfriend Marcel Somerville accused her of cheating with Dan during their trip to Marbella, a claim both parties strongly denied.
Chloe Ayling Scandal
In December 2019, model Chloe Ayling claimed she had a threesome with Dan[/caption] She said it was with US reality star Natalie Nunn[/caption]The couple’s relationship was further tested by other cheating allegations.
In December 2019, model Chloe Ayling claimed she had a threesome with Dan and US reality star Natalie Nunn during a boozy night out.
Chloe said, “He had full sex with Natalie in front of me in the bathroom, and then kissed and performed a sex act on me.”
Dan never directly addressed the claims but posted cryptic messages on social media at the time.
He also liked a tweet branding Chloe Ayling a “sl*g”, fuelling speculation about his involvement.
Jacqueline’s priorities during I’m A Celeb
Jacqueline became the first winner in I’m A Celebrity history to cancel live TV interviews.
Her decision came after the threesome allegations against Dan emerged.
Despite previous champions appearing on daytime shows the next day, Jacqueline is said to have refused to go on any and said she wanted to spend time with her children instead.
A source told The Mirror: “She has to film for the ‘coming out’ show which airs later this week, so cancelled all other TV offers like GMB and Lorraine to spend more time with the family.
“Jacqueline and Dan spent time together in the hotel and probably had a lot to talk about.”
The Alexandra Cane allegations
Dan was accused of having a fling with Love Island’s Alexandra Cane in 2019[/caption]Despite these efforts, more rumours emerged.
Dan was accused of having a fling with Love Island’s Alexandra Cane in 2019, a claim he strongly denied, calling it “a load of rubbish”.
Onlookers told The Sun how the dad of two made a move on the reality star in the middle of Manchester’s Neighbourhood bar.
Dan was invited to the party along with Alexandra and a number of other stars, including Megan Barton Hanson and James Argent.
And as they hit the dancefloor, Dan made a beeline for Alexandra – leaving other partygoers stunned.
One eyewitness told The Sun: “Dan was all over Alexandra. At one point he grabbed her and kissed her.”
Another onlooker added: “He was putting his hands all on her – grinding against her and thrusting his hips.
“He’s a married man so it was pretty shocking. She didn’t seem that into it but she laughed it off.
“Everyone was talking about how he was acting. There were loads of women there but he was only interested in Alexandra.
“They left together in a taxi with a couple of friends when the party was over.”
Dan has denied he did anything but dance with Alexandra and insisted they had been mates for a while, despite him only following her on Instagram the morning after.
Failed vow renewal
The couple eventually reconciled, with Jacqueline choosing to forgive Dan for his alleged indiscretions.
Jacqueline even told The Sun how they’d planned to renew their vows after her I’m A Celeb victory, attributing the idea to wanting their children present.
She said: “The thought of it cringes me out slightly but we might do something like renew our vows when the time is right.
“We would like all five of us in the photos – we’d do it for the kids.
“It does feel like we have a new relationship though, so it might be quite nice to celebrate that.”
However, it doesn’t appear they went through with their plans.
Money woes
Dan appeared on the Essex-based reality series for two years until 2015 and then came third on the 2018 series of Celebrity Big Brother.
Making it to the finale of CBB won Dan a £60,000 pay day but was not enough to keep him out of financial trouble.
The Sun reported in 2019 his business has just £978 left on the books and his firm – Storms Entertainment – has £7,469 in debt.
Another company he owned called Charlie Entertainments was dissolved in 2017.
It went bust with undisclosed debts after HMRC petitioned the high court to put it into liquidation.

BLAITHÍN MACKIN starred off the bench as Armagh just about edged All-Ireland champions Kerry yesterday.
All-Star Aoife McCoy and sharpshooter Niamh Reel also shone as the holders struck an early-season blow in Tralee.
Mackin came on in the 33rd minute and hit 1-1 to help the Orchard to their late victory.
But the visitors still needed a late second-half surge to win — as they outscored the Kingdom by 3-6 to 0-6.
Mackin’s fellow sub Rebecca Cunningham also made a difference for the Ulster side with a goal — while keeper Anna Carr was in fine form too.
The Kingdom had the advantage of the wind in the first half. But Division 1 champs Armagh made a brighter start when Eimear McGeown pointed in the first minute.
Kerry were soon on level terms when Síofra O’Shea slotted over a free following a foul on captain Anna Galvin.
In a repeat of last year’s league decider, O’Shea put the Kingdom a point ahead in the fifth minute.
But Reel showed her class when she replied two minutes later for the visitors.
Reel then slotted over a free that she earned herself and Armagh went two to the good with the same player on target.
Rachel Dwyer got one back for the hosts after a fine run and assist by the marauding Aoife Dillane.
Eve Lavery put two points between the sides again in the 18th minute.
But Kerry dominated the rest of the first half from then on with O’Shea striking a brilliant goal in the 20th minute.
Jadyn Lucey followed up with a score of her own but Armagh were still dangerous.
Even so, Mary Ellen Bolger was forced into a brilliant one-handed save from McGeown as her shot was destined for the top corner.
However Kerry negated their threat after that save with O’Shea and Anna Galvin tagging on scores to hand the hosts a five-point interval lead.
Galvin then went on a fine run and score from the second-half throw-in.
But Armagh nailed three points on the spin from Eve Lavery, McGeown and Mackin to make it a three-point game.
Carr then made a fine double save to deny O’Shea and Lucey.
But Lucey saw yellow straight afterwards for a high challenge.
O’Shea looked to have won it for Kerry when she pointed in the 45th minute to put seven points between the teams.
TIDE TURNED
Yet that was the Kingdom’s last score as they ran out of steam.
It was all Armagh from here on in. Reel scored a brace of points and that was followed by a fine goal from Mackin.
Rebecca Cunningham then netted a scorcher in the 53rd minute.
And the last goal of the contest came from Roisin Mulligan as Armagh had too much for Kerry in the closing stages.
ARMAGH: A Carr; M Ferguson, L Kenny, C Towe; E Druse, L McConville, R Mulligan 1-0; N Coleman, C O’Hanlon 0-1; A McCoy, M Feehan, E Lavery 0-2; N Reel 0-5, 1f, M Lennon, E McGeown 0-2.
Subs: B Mackin 1-1 for Kenny 33 mins; C McNally for Lennon 40; M McGann for Lavery 40; R Cunningham 1-0 for McGeown 52; N Henderson for Reel 55; C Garvey for M Feehan 56.
KERRY: M E Bolger; R Smith, D Kearney, F O’Donoghue; A O’Connell, K Cronin 0-1, A Dillane; M O’Connell, A Galvin 0-2; N Carmody, N Ní Chonchúir 0-1, C Evans 0-1; J Lucey 0-1, S O’Shea 1-6, 0-4f, R Dwyer 0-1.

Last person to see missing Irish teen Amy Fitzpatrick in ‘never be found’ fear as she tells of anger over case
THE last person to see missing Irish teen Amy Fitzpatrick says she hasn’t spoken to Spanish cops in 17 years and cried: “I fear she will never be found.”
Ashley Rose was 13 when she waved goodbye to her pal outside her house on the Costa Del Sol as Amy began the short walk home at 10pm on New Year’s Day 2008 — only never to see her again.
Yesterday, the 30-year-old mum told of her anger at the way Amy’s case has been treated in Spain.
She said: “The way the Spanish police have treated this case from the start is an absolute disgrace.
“They are convinced Amy ran away from home, is still alive somewhere and that is the end of it. They have no interest looking for her or trying to find out where she is buried.
“Everyone who knew Amy is convinced she is dead and that something terrible happened.
“But the Spanish police are not interested. If Amy was Spanish they would move heaven and earth to find her.
“They are treating her case as a missing person — they should be upgrading it to a murder probe.
“Over the past few years, they were given information from the local criminal underworld that Amy’s remains were buried in one of the stable blocks at the old racetrack in Fuengirola.
“But they ignored this tip-off and never bothered searching the racetrack. They had nothing to lose in searching for her body and if they didn’t find her, at least they would know she is not there.”
Spanish cops are said to be dubious about the tip-off and have yet to carry out a full-scale dig of the area near the racecourse.
Ashley said it is also incredible the police have only interviewed her once despite being the last person to see Amy alive — and it was 17 years ago.
‘NEVER BOTHERED TO CALL ME’
She continued: “Can you believe they have not been in contact with me during all that time?
“They spoke to me when I was a kid — 13 years of age — and never bothered to call me years later to see as an adult if I remembered any more.
“Like most people who knew Amy, I believed that she was killed and that her whole murder is being covered up.
“I have my own suspicions about what happened to her and who did it but I am not going to start naming names.
COPS ‘SHOULD BE ALL OVER THIS’
“The police should be all over this and the people responsible for Amy’s disappearance and murder should not get away with it.”
Spanish police said the file on Amy’s case is still open but they are still treating her disappearance as a missing person’s inquiry.
However, Amy’s dad Christopher Fitzpatrick, his sister Christine Keegan and the Irish Government have been trying to put pressure on the Spanish government to treat Amy’s case as murder.
Amy had lived with her mother Audrey, stepfather Dave Mahon and late bro Dean in Calahonda, halfway between Fuengirola and Marbella, when she went missing.
Fraudsters are outwitting us to steal our cash – spot the signs and stay safe online with these top tips
IRISH payment fraud is on the rise.
The practice – which can include dodgy messages and scam emails – is a growing concern in Europe, especially in the rapidly evolving digital marketplace.
Fraudsters continually adapt and use new ways to exploit digital systems and bypass security measures.
The cost to businesses and individuals runs into many millions each year. A new report by the Central Bank this week found that the total value of fraudulent payments rose to €126million in 2023.
Before Christmas, Gardai also warned there had been a major rise in smishing frauds, with a number of banks and financial institutions reporting incidents.
Meanwhile, one in five regular online shoppers lost money through scams over the past year, with some losing hundreds of euros, according to figures from the Banking & Payments Federation Ireland.
Writing in The Irish Sun on Sunday today, Michael Kavanagh, CEO of the Compliance Institute, said the new stats from the Central Bank are further evidence of how pervasive a threat payment fraud has become...
WHILE the internet and tech are now unavoidable and have brought untold benefits to how we live our lives, they have also brought many dangers.
Hackers and cybercriminals are continuously improving their practices, constantly finding new ways of stealing material and outsmarting even the most advanced security systems.
Fraudsters’ growing sophistication means scams have become harder to spot, and therefore easier to fall for.
They are also using technology to identify and target people, as well as to extract the information they need to steal from someone.
AI, a technology that has developed rapidly in recent years, is being increasingly used by scammers in their attempts to defraud people.
TRUST BY IMPERSONATION
The Central Bank’s new data on Irish payment fraud, published last week, shows that the total value of fraudulent payments here was 26 per cent higher in 2023 than in 2022.
Around 98 per cent of card payment fraud occurs where fraudsters use stolen cards, account or personal information for a payment.
“Manipulation of the Payer Fraud” occurs where a fraudster gains trust by impersonation and then convinces the individual to make payments to them.
The Behind The Data paper also reveals that the proceeds from fraudulent payments are predominantly transferred to accounts outside Ireland.
NUMBER ONE THREAT
Incidents of fraud are more prominent when measures such as the EU’s strong customer authentication are not in place.
A survey conducted by the Compliance Institute in 2023 found cybercrime to be the number one threat when it comes to financial crime in Ireland.
While financial crimes such as tax evasion and insider trading could be classed as “traditional” criminal pursuits, cybercrime is more new-age and is developing at a pace so fast that organisations and legislators cannot keep up.
The huge increase in online shopping has increased opportunities for fraudsters.
THOUSANDS LOST
One in five regular online shoppers lost money through scams over the past year, with some losing hundreds, according to Banking & Payments Federation Ireland figures.
It must be added that some people have lost thousands — or indeed more — after being defrauded by scammers.
Our own findings highlight the intrusiveness people continuously face when they open their mailbox every day.
Many people don’t realise that by inputting their email address into a site while shopping or perusing the internet, they are effectively giving permission to receive spam on a regular basis.
EDUCATION MATTERS
Some sites make it extremely difficult to unsubscribe from their mailing lists, or to stop the use of tracking cookies, thereby trapping people into receiving a barrage of unwanted junk mail.
It’s incumbent on us all to educate ourselves so that we can protect ourselves as much as possible from the dangers of cybercrime.
People must take ownership of what they can do to protect their data.
Simple steps like ensuring they have adequate security and anti-virus software on their PCs and laptops are crucial.
IMPORTANT TIPS
Regular password changes, while they might be a nuisance, are always very important.
When shopping online, look for a padlock symbol beside the website address and ensure the web address begins with ‘https’ as both indicate the site is secure.
Avoid clicking on links from social media or pop-up ads; instead, type the website address directly into your browser.
We all need to be mindful when sharing our details with online sites and do what we can to protect ourselves from spammers and, worse still, fraudsters.
Met Eireann’s Joanna Donnelly split between Storm Eowyn job cover and DWTS rehearsals as she reveals biggest obstacle
WEATHER forecaster Joanna Donnelly has joked she should have a handicap on Dancing With The Stars — because she is up against “two Olympians and a Miss Universe”.
The Met Eireann meteorologist also told how she was dragged into doing an overnight shift covering Storm Eowyn on Tuesday before rushing back to rehearsals with professional partner Maciej Zieba.
But Joanna said the biggest obstacle on DWTS is competing against younger athletes like Olympians Jack Woolley, 26, and Rhys McClenaghan, 26, and ex-Miss Universe Ireland Aishah Akorede, 25.
She told The Irish Sun on Sunday: “I’m pretty fit but I’m also pretty old, so I would want to have something going for me. There is no compensation for being 54 in this competition.
“I’m on the same playing field as two Olympians, a Miss Universe and a couple of 20-somethings but we are all judged by the same panel for the same things. So I’d love there to be a handicap system like there is in golf, where some golfers play off scratch and some golfers have a handicap.
“I’d like there to be a handicap system as I am not only a woman, I am menopausal and 54. Give me a break people.”
Joanna admits her dancing suffered in the opening shows because she was trying to juggle her day job at Met Eireann with dance rehearsals — with Storm Eowyn adding to the chaos this week.
She said: “You don’t know the weather you’re going to get when making your schedules, and during the first week I wasn’t prepared for the level of commitment for both the weather and dancing.
“I didn’t take off enough annual leave and wore myself out. I went straight from DWTS rehearsals to working night duty from 8pm to 8am on Wednesday night doing my little bit. Thankfully we are a big team in Met Eireann and there is always someone covering.”
Joanna also revealed how she brought in some help at home to look after husband Harm Luijkx and their three children, Nicci, 19, Tobias, 15, and Casper, 13, who all support her in the competition.
She said: “I consulted my family before I agreed to take on DWTS. They have been super at picking up the slack and I’ve had some help as well too around the house which I hadn’t got before. You just can’t do everything.”
And the public are loving it too, with last Sunday seeing Joanna samba to reggae hit Gimme Hope Jo’anna.
She said: “People come up to me all the time now. On the Luas, everywhere. Dancing With The Stars is a very inspiring show and makes a lot of people very happy.”
Tonight is Movie Night, with Joanna dancing a quickstep to Mrs Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel from classic Sixties film The Graduate.
The programme will finish with the second celebrity elimination.
- LEAD judge Loraine Barry will be missing tonight following the death of mum Caroline on Wednesday. A spokeswoman said: “In the light of this sad news Lorraine will not appear on the show. Brian, Arthur and Karen will judge the remaining ten contestants’ performances for Movie Week.”
‘More female victims’ of ‘arrogant’ gym perv Shane Flynn go to cops as new concerns raised with gardai during trial
NEW concerns about the behaviour of perv gym owner Shane Flynn were raised with Gardai during his trial, The Irish Sun on Sunday can reveal.
The group of women — from all over Ireland — were waiting to see the outcome of his case before deciding to make a formal complaint.
But they will not be making any statements after the personal trainer, 35, who ran the NGS Gym and Rehabilitation Clinic in Mullingar, Co Westmeath, received a 28-month sentence for sexually assaulting a woman in January 2021.
Creep Flynn — who had 34,000 followers on Instagram — sexually assaulted the woman as she was receiving treatment for back pain.
The women who raised concerns with cops during the trial were separate to the 37 women Flynn secretly recorded when they were changing at his gym from July 2018 until August 2020.
He positioned his laptop so he could see them undressing and covertly recorded them when they were receiving treatment from him.
A source told The Irish Sun on Sunday: “Gardai met with a number of women who came forward when Flynn’s trial started last October.
“They all had serious concerns about his behaviour and if he had not been convicted of sexual assault, they would have made formal complaints. There is a lot of admiration for the woman who went to court because she didn’t want other women to be targeted by Flynn.
“Thankfully justice has prevailed and Flynn has been prosecuted for a very serious offence and his despicable behaviour has been exposed.”
Gardai have encouraged any other women who may have been sexually assaulted or secretly recorded by Flynn to come forward.
The Irish Sun on Sunday can also reveal that the perv received some support from a millionaire businessman during his trial at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court.
The source added: “The businessman was at court for a lot of the hearings.
GARDAI ‘ALWAYS TWO STEPS AHEAD’
“Flynn comes across as very arrogant and even when he was being interviewed by Gardai about the offences, he thought he was clever.
“But due to the nature of the evidence gathered, the Gardai were always two steps ahead of him.”
Flynn, who won four county championships with St Loman’s GAA club, appeared on RTE show Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week in 2019.
Ahead of the programme, he said: “I’m the type of leader that thrives on pressure.
VICTIM ‘MADE WORLD SAFER’
“If someone with a weaker personality says that Shane Flynn is very cocky, I can’t do anything about that. I’ve got to keep driving on who I am.”
Following his conviction, Judge Ronan Munro said Flynn’s victim had “made the world a safer place” over her decision to come forward.
After completing his sentence, Flynn must remain under probation supervision for one year and complete a sexual offending treatment.
But Judge Munro also told the court how his exploitation of his victim’s vulnerability was “particularly insidious”.
FLYNN ‘CROSSED THE LINE’
In a moving victim impact statement to the court, his victim said: “After this happened to me I completely lost my spark and became increasingly anxious. He entered a not guilty plea when all along he has been guilty.
“Shane Flynn tried to lie about the entire assault and portray me as the person who was wrong, the person who crossed the line when in fact it was him. It’s the most vulnerable position I have ever been in my life.”
The probe into Flynn was run by the Gardai’s Divisional Protective Services team in Meath and Westmeath.
