Urgent ‘priceless gift of life’ appeal for people to donate blood as Storm Eowyn knocks supplies amid 12k donations plea
THE national blood supply has plummeted across Ireland due to “exceptionally high demand” for donations over the last year.
The Irish Blood Transfusion Service said that severe weather conditions like Storm Eowyn combined with high levels of respiratory illnesses have led to a significant reduction in blood donations.
The service has urged the public to give blood over the next few days as fears grow over scarce stocks, with just a few days supply left in most blood groups.
Paul McKinney, IBTS’ Director of Donor Services and Logistics, explained: “In order to avoid putting further pressure on our hospital system, we need over 12,000 donations in the coming days and weeks, to restore the blood supply, and safely support our health service.
“In 2024, the IBTS issued the highest number of blood donation units to Irish hospitals in over a decade, at just under 128,500 units.
“This exceptionally high demand has continued unabated into 2025.”
New donors, younger donors and donors of all ethnicities have all be urged to come forward and donate blood in the coming days.
McKinney said: “We are asking people who might never have given blood before, or it’s been a while, to make it their goal to give blood, and the priceless gift of life, to those in our communities and hospitals who need it.”
The service has urged the public to give blood at the 12 clinics open across Ireland this week.
Giveblood.ie said online: “Following the impact of Storm Eowyn, IBTS has issued an urgent appeal for blood donations with supplies very low.
“We need this week’s clinics to be filled to avoid an impact on our hospitals!”
The clinics listed below will be running between January 27 and February 2:
- Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan
- Bantry, Co Cork
- Duleek, Co Meath
- Kilrush, Co Clare
- Kingscourt, Co Cavan
- Listowel, Co Kerry
- Malahide, Co Dublin
- Portlaoise, Co Laois
- Rathkeale, Co Limerick
- Skibbereen, Co Cork
- Swords, Co Dublin
- Westport, Co Mayo
Stillorgan, Dublin; D’Olier Street, Dublin; and St Finbarr’s, Cork will continue to see weekly clinics operating.
The IBTS added: “IBTS has issued an urgent appeal, in the wake of Storm Eowyn, for blood donations, with supplies very low.
“Between the severe weather, high demand, and illness in our communities, we need over 12,000 donations in the coming days and weeks, including pre bank holiday.
“Be a life saver and give blood at one of our blood donation clinics this week.
“Existing donors can book an appointment online and all possible donors can call 1800 731 137 to find available appointments.”
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW BEFORE DONATING?
HERE'S everything you need to know about giving blood:
- Check your likely eligibility by taking the short new donor eligibility quiz
- There is also a lot more information about eligibility in the FAQ section on the IBTS wesbite, or you can call 1800 731 137 if you want to talk to someone and ask further questions
- If eligible now (or in the future after any advised waiting period) an appointment will be arranged to give blood or a sample
- If for your first donation, you are only able to give a sample (as is often the case), you only need to wait 42 days to be able to give full donations – and then every 90 days between donations!
- If for any reason you are unable to give blood, please encourage your friends and family to become blood donors
Those interested in donating blood have been urged to check their eligibility before attending a clinic.
The IBTS has confirmed that Ireland needs more donors from all backgrounds to meet the needs of “all our patients” in hospitals.
It said: “Increasingly more people of diverse backgrounds are now eligible to give blood in Ireland including many of whom were previously unable, including donors of African heritage.
“The recent introduction of malarial testing for blood donation samples means we can now take blood from a far more diverse range of donors than previously.
“Many potential donors who were not eligible previously, including people born or who resided in a malarial area for a longer period of time, may now be able to give blood, subject to other normal criteria.”
Best Six Nations stars of all time revealed with England legend No1 and Red Rose dominating top 10
ENGLAND legend Jonny Wilkinson has been named the best Six Nations player of all time – ahead of Welsh stars Sir Gareth Edwards and JPR Williams.
The World Cup-winning fly half had a glittering career, with a total of 91 caps for England as well as hoovering up trophies at club level.
Irish captain Brian O’Driscoll placed fourth on the list, with his fearlessness securing his legacy as one of the most exciting players in Six Nations history.
While English rugby fans also championed Martin Johnson, whose ball carrying skills and physical resilience made him a modern icon, landing him in fifth place.
The poll of 2,000 rugby fans also revealed generational divides in player preferences, with older fans opting for legends from the ‘Five Nations’ era, such as Wales’ Edwards.
A spokesperson for Lottoland.co.uk, which commissioned the research alongside its Sportsbook team, said: “We’ve been lucky enough to have seen some incredible players down the years.
“As the Five Nations changed to Six, some things haven’t changed at all when it comes to making yourself a hero of the game.
“It’s not even all about winning, it’s about the way they made fans feel, and their contributions to exciting matches.”
The study also found some players Brits believe have been overrated in the Nations tournaments, with Jeremy Guscott topping the list.
But teamwork and the ability to elevate teammates were the attributes players most needed to be in the ‘GOAT’ conversation (36 per cent).

Celebrity Gogglebox’s Channel 4 future revealed after six series on air
FANS of Celebrity Gogglebox have been told they won’t have to wait long to hear about the series’ fate.
It’s been confirmed that this summer will see the return of the star- filled show where well know faces will settle on to couches, arm chairs and celebrity thrones for a seventh time.
Fans have been waiting to see if Celebrity Gogglebox would be back in 2025[/caption] Channel 4 have confirmed that we’ll be seeing famous faces and their sofas again this summer[/caption] Viewers are keen to see which celebrities will be returning like fan favourite Miriam Margolyes[/caption]Channel 4 have been running a celebrity version of the popular show since back in 2014.
Back then a Stand Up to Cancer special saw the likes of Noel Gallagher, Kate Moss and the late Paul O’Grady shouting, laughing and crying their way through the week’s TV.
Fans will be keen to see which famous faces will be gracing their couches this year and they’ll be looking out to see if regulars like Judi Love, Mel C and Mo Gilligan will reappear.
Names have not been confirmed but series six was a debut year for Annie Mac, Sara Cox and Rio Ferdinand so viewers will be keen to see if any new characters will be introduced this year.
Series seven was revealed as part of an announcement on a raft of confirmed Channel 4 titles for the spring and summer schedules.
These include a Stand Up to Cancer celebrity Bake Off, Series six of The Handmaids Tale, comedy–Disability Benefits staring Rosie Jones and a new dating/reality format called Virgin Island.
Channel 4 will be keen to get Celebrity Gogglebox fans back on side after a screening an episode in December that viewers thought was brand new.
As the show started to run fans quickly realised that it was a repeat of previous episodes stitched together.
Irate Goggleboxers quickly took to socials to voice their displeasure with one saying: “Really getting f****d off with the TV recently! EVERYTHING seems to be repeats!
“Got settled to watch Celeb Gogglebox thinking it was a new series, or a Christmas special! Oh how wrong am I! YET AGAIN ANOTHER REPEAT!”
Another was shocked that a prime time slot had been given over to old material: “A Christmas compilation episode on the last Friday before Christmas is very disappointing.”
One felt that they had been mislead saying: “Why are you calling this a new episode? It’s not new.”
Although there may have been 24 series of the opinion filled show so far, it’s a character from series one that’s recently been in the spotlight.
Sandra Martin was a huge character in the first nine series of the show and was well known for her famous Pot Noodle cup.
She recently took to social media to kick off at being allocated a middle seat on a Ryan Air flight, where it seems she felt that her position as a celebrity meant that she should never have been expected to be sandwiched between two strangers.
New Love Island feud exposed as Harriett slammed by show rival on TikTok over ‘council house’ jibe
LOVE Island All Stars’ Harriett Blackmore has been slammed by a show rival over remarks she allegedly made about Ronnie Vint.
During last night’s episode of Love Island All Stars Ronnie was seen begging his ex to take him back, following Harriett‘s bombshell arrival.
Now Patsy Field – who was in the villa with the exes last year – has fuelled her feud with Harriett.
Patsy took to Instagram to claim Harriett once mocked Ronnie for “living on a council estate”.
Speaking in a video, Patsy alleged she was present Harriett was heading to Ronnie’s house for the first time.
She said: “They got the post code, they got it up on Google Maps and they started creasing, wetting their pants, over the fact it was on a council estate.
“Zooming in on the house going, ‘Oh my god it’s so small, I don’t know if I can do this, I’m so embarrassed… it’s giving council estate’.”
But fans noticed that Ronnie’s sister was quick to fire back at Patsy in the comments.
She wrote: “As Ronnie’s sister, let me clarify he does not live on a council estate.
“Patsy is bang out of order over this. Using Ronnie as a tool in her Harriett hate campaign.”
Last night Ronnie was left frustrated after begging Harriett to give their relationship another try.
She told him: “I’m not in love with you in anymore, I love you but you hurt me.
“Why would I be in love with someone who hurt me?”
Harriett insisted she is open to getting to know the other boys and brought up Ronnie’s behaviour in the villa last year.
She said: “I owe it to myself, I gave you everything and you didn’t give me… If I actually want to get to know someone and I have a genuine connection, of course I will.
“You did it! You didn’t even do it once, you did it three or four times.”

A GOOD Morning Britain host has sparked fury after failing to mention Jews as being victims of the Holocaust.
Ranvir Singh has apologised after making the “baffling” mistake during the ITV show’s coverage of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on Monday.
Ms Singh failed to mention Jews as victims of the Holocaust[/caption]Holocaust Memorial Day celebrates the closing of the Nazis’ biggest death camp by Allied forces on January 27 1945.
During a news segment, Ms Singh, 47, reported how King Charles was due to become the first British monarch to visit the site as part of a special service.
However, when listing the victims of the death camps, she mentioned a number of targeted groups, but failed to include those of the Jewish faith – the group which suffered the largest number of deaths.
Ms Singh said: “Six million people were killed in concentration camps during the Second World War, as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay or belonged to another ethnic group.”
The Campaign Against Antisemitism shared the clip on X and blasted the host for her omission, saying it “truly beggars belief”, adding it was “dire reporting”.
It went on to say: “Additionally, there is bafflingly no utterance of the word ‘antisemitism’ whatsoever.
“If this is intended to pay respect to the victims of Holocaust Memorial Day, it has failed abysmally and ignores the true nature of this horrific event.”
The group said during an entire two-minute segment on the anniversary, which included cutting away from Ms Singh to correspondent Nick Dixon live from Auschwitz, there was only one mention of Jews.
It referred to former history students taking a tour of the Jewish quarter of Kraków but failed to contextualise the significance.
In an apology today, Ms Singh said: “In yesterday’s news, when we reported on the memorial events in Auschwitz, we said six million people were killed in the Holocaust but crucially failed to say they were Jewish. That was our mistake, which we apologise for.”
HOLOCAUST
More than a million people were murdered by the Nazis at the site during the Second World War.
They comprised mostly of Jews, but also Poles, Soviet prisoners of war and other nationalities were killed as part of the Holocaust.
In total, more than six million Jewish men, women and children were killed.
The camp was finally liberated by soldiers of the 60th Army of the First Ukrainian Front.
Yesterday, King Charles, 76, walked through the entrance to the camp to mark the anniversary after hearing harrowing stories from Holocaust survivors.
He was joined by fellow monarchs including Spain‘s King Felipe and Queen Letizia, Belgium‘s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, Norway‘s Crown Prince Haakon, and Sweden‘s Crown Princess Victoria.
Charles initially visited the Jewish Community Centre, also meeting volunteers and wellwishers, as well as unveiling a plaque.
During a speech, Charles said the testimony of survivors teaches us to “never be a bystander in the face of violence and hate”.
He went on to say, remembering the “evils of the past remains a vital task”, and knowledge should be used to inspire people to “build a kinder and more compassionate world”.
He described the anniversary as a “sombre and indeed a sacred moment”.
It comes as Princess Kate joined husband Prince William to pay tribute to the six million Jews who died during one of humanity’s darkest hours at an event in London yesterday.
William gave a reading and lit a candle at a moving ceremony.
The Sun has approached ITV and the Jewish Leadership Council for comment.
Campaign Against Antisemitism full statement
Six million people were killed in concentration camps during the Second World War, as well as millions of others because they were Polish, disabled, gay, or belonged to another ethnic group.
Jews. The word you’re looking for is ‘Jews’, not ‘people’. This truly beggars belief.
This dire reporting is not only factually incorrect but erases Jews from a genocide in which six million Jewish men, women and children were slaughtered specifically because they were Jews.
How is it possible, therefore, that on Holocaust Memorial Day of all days, @GMB manages to acknowledge several other groups but not Jews?
To make matters worse, there is no reference to Jewish people at all for over two minutes into this segment, and when there finally is one, it is only done once and in regard to former history students taking a tour of the Jewish quarter of Kraków.
Additionally, there is bafflingly no utterance of the word “antisemitism” whatsoever. If this is intended to pay respect to the victims of Holocaust Memorial Day, it has failed abysmally and ignores the true nature of this horrific event.
How on earth was this allowed to happen, @ITV? We demand an explanation.
Love Island villa thrown into chaos as TWO boys and one girl axed in shock mass dumping
THE ALL Star Islanders were left stunned as Love Island’s mass dumping culled THREE of the gang – and they’ve already left the villa.
The Sun can reveal that two boys and one girl were booted in the huge villa shake-up.
It’s the biggest dump of the series yet, with Maya Jama arriving to swing the axe.
The kicking occurred after viewers chose their favourite boys and girls.
A source said: “The viewers set the ball rolling with a vote for their favourite girl and favourite boy at the end of Sunday night’s show.
“There were then tough decisions for the Islanders to make, with some of them playing a part in deciding who exactly left the villa and who got to stay.
“Viewers will be truly shocked at who ended up leaving.”
In scenes that might be shown in tonight’s episode, the action goes down at the firepit and the Islanders are wracked with the tense decision they’re asked to make.
The culling made way for new bombshell Danielle Sellers, who The Sun revealed has already arrived in the Cape Town villa.
The source added: “It came at a tense time in the villa after Luca and Scott’s row, with loyalties all over the place.
“Only the girls are really tight right now, with the boys especially ripped apart and Kaz and Catherine divided over Montel.
“It’s not clear to viewers at this stage who will battle to save who and we could end up saying goodbye to some unlikely Islanders.”
Last night the fallout from Vegas Night continued.
Luca apologised to Tina for humiliating her in front of the villa when he revealed. in spite, that Scott wasn’t into her.
Scott and Luca almost came to blows in the dramatic scenes, but in a massive U-turn, Luca ended up in tears.
The regretful star patched things up with Scott – who also attempted to make amends with Tina.
