Killer husband who murdered pregnant wife 25 years ago then buried body in garden is facing fresh charges over her death
A KILLER husband who murdered his pregnant wife 25 years ago is facing fresh charges over her death.
Debbie Griggs, 34, was last seen at her home in the seaside town of Deal, Kent in May 1999.
Debbie was murdered by her husband while pregnant[/caption]Her husband Andrew Griggs was convicted of murder and jailed for life in October 2019 following a cold case review.
Three years later, Debbie was found buried in the garden of a home in Dorset more than 200 miles away.
Griggs, now aged 62, is facing fresh charges in the latest tragic development.
He will appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on February 13 accused of perverting the course of justice.
Griggs is also charged with obstructing a coroner in the execution of their duty.
The former soldier had reported pregnant Debbie missing, with her car – a white Peugeot 309 – found abandoned days later.
Debbie’s blood was recovered from the vehicle but no trace of the mum was found.
Then in 2022, a team of about 20 investigators from Kent Police began searching the home in Dorset after receiving new information.
They found Debbie’s remains barrel-like container in the grounds of the property, which Griggs had moved to with their three sons.
Kent Police said: “Further criminal charges have been brought against a man jailed for murdering his wife over 25 years ago.
“Debbie Griggs was 34 and pregnant when she was reported missing from her home in Cross Road, Deal, by her husband Andrew Griggs in May 1999.
“He denied being responsible for her disappearance but was found guilty of murder and jailed for life in October 2019 following a review by cold case detectives from Kent Police.”

MICHAEL OLIVER’S family home is being guarded by police, according to reports.
The Premier League referee has been subjected to disgusting abuse and even received death threats in the wake of the red card he showed to Myles Lewis-Skelly.
Michael Oliver has police protection after receiving death threats[/caption] The referee sent Myles Lewis-Skelly off for this challenge on Matt Doherty[/caption]Oliver, 39, dismissed the Arsenal youngster for his cynical trip on Matt Doherty in the first half of the Gunners’ 1-0 win away at Wolves on Saturday.
He deemed the challenge as “serious foul play” – prompting a straight red and a three-match ban.
The decision left Mikel Arteta “fuming” while the likes of Ian Wright, Pat Nevin, Keith Hackett and SunSport’s Mark Halsey shared their dismay.
Many supporters also vented their anger at the decision.
But some of the reactions from fans were unacceptable as personal messages of hate and even sickening threats to kill Oliver and his two-year-old daughter.
It is alleged one person vowed to smash the windows of their house – three weeks after an apparent threat to bomb Oliver’s car, the Daily Mail reports.
And now The Times state the referee is under ongoing police protection.
A police car was parked in the street of the family home on Sunday morning to check on their safety.
Police patrols continue to operate around the family home while the UK Football Policing Unit (UKFPU) are investigating the threats.
The UKFPU is working with social media companies to track down the senders of the online messages.
A spokesperson said on Monday: “Officers from the UKFPU have launched an investigation after a number of abusive messages were directed toward a referee following a Premier League match.
“On Sunday January 26 police were contacted by the UK Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in relation to social media messages directed towards referee Michael Oliver.
“Enquiries are in the early stages and officers are working closely with social media providers, including Facebook and X, to identify those responsible for the messages.”
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) released their own statement on Sunday condemning the atrocious abuse.
It said: “We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver following the Wolverhampton Wanderers v Arsenal fixture.
“No official should be subject to any form of abuse, let alone the abhorrent attacks aimed at Michael and his family over the past 24 hours.
“The police are aware, and a number of investigations have commenced.
“We are supporting Michael, and all those affected, and are determined to tackle this unacceptable behaviour.
“Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has been forced to deal with threats in recent times.
MARK HALSEY: Questions have to be asked of VAR after Lewis-Skelly sending off... here's what SHOULD have happened
By Mark Halsey
VAR Darren England should have recommended a review as soon as referee Michael Oliver showed Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly a straight red card for his challenge on Wolves’ Matt Doherty.
An official has to decide whether the challenge was careless or reckless — careless is a free-kick only, reckless is a yellow card — or worthy of a red card.
When a player lunges at an opponent with one or two feet from the front, the side or from the back which endangers the player’s safety with excess force or/and brutality, it must be sanctioned with a red.
I saw it as a reckless challenge worthy of a yellow, not a red.
So why did Darren not recommend a review? Once the red card was shown, the VAR should have intervened.
If Michael had the opportunity to view the challenge again, I’m sure he would have changed his mind, cancelled the red card and issued a yellow.
As for Arsenal fans’ views that Michael is biased against them, I’m not buying into that. You can never question the integrity of a match official and Michael is one of our best referees.
Officials cannot get everything right and that is why we have VAR to help. So questions have to be asked of Darren.
With the second yellow for Joao Gomes after catching Jurrien Timber on the ankle, you could argue that was a worse challenge than the Lewis-Skelly one.
“We will continue to support all investigations.”
Arsenal were hoping the PGMOL would overturn the decision – as they did when Bruno Fernandes was “wrongfully” sent off against Tottenham in September.
But on Tuesday the North Londoners officially lodged an appeal against the red card.
As for Oliver, he will return to refereeing on Wednesday when he takes charge of Barcelona vs Atalanta in the Champions League.
The official then was handed a huge relegation six-pointer on Saturday as Ipswich host Southampton – but will not be involved at the Emirates on Sunday when Arsenal host Manchester City.
Oliver, though, did get given the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park with Liverpool making the short trip to face Everton on February 12 in a game rearranged from December due to the storms.

Andrew Goodman backs Ireland trio to ‘have great Test careers’ amid burgeoning battle for Six Nations starting spot
IRELAND assistant coach Andrew Goodman said that the outhalf battle has been ten out of ten.
Interim head coach Simon Easterby will name his team to face England in Saturday’s Six Nations opener on Thursday with a big decision to be made who to play at 10.
Leinster’s Sam Prendergast is the front runner having impressed against Australia though clubmate Ciaran Frawley and Munster’s Jack Crowley are also pushing for inclusion.
But Goodman, a former outhalf, insisted that what has impressed him the most is how the trio have worked together as well as competed against each other.
Goodman said: “The three of them are all great lads, first and foremost, and they all work well together.
“They’re competing hard on the field but the pleasing thing is you go back to the hotel and they’re sitting around the computers together going through clips.
“And they’re driving the team well. It’s great to see and I’m sure they’ll all have great Test careers ahead.”
Goodman knows Prendergast well having also worked with him at Leinster last year before he moved on to the Ireland set-up last July.
He added: “It’s been a great couple of months for Sam, just the game experience he’s managed to gather up both with Ireland, first with Emerging Ireland, then Ireland, then some big Champions Cup games away to La Rochelle, home to Bath.
“So it’s been a great period for him to get real game experience.
“I know he valued the time at Leinster when he was training alongside the senior squad as an academy member but to get out there and feel it for himself, there’s been huge growth in his game.”
But the Ireland assistant also acknowledged that the team need a big step up on their showing last November when performances were iffy in a loss to New Zealand, and wins over Argentina, Fiji, and Australia.
He added: “We were aware that some of the timing was off and some of the skill execution that we pride ourselves on was off.
“We’ve sharpened and focused around our skill set.
“We’re making sure we get lots of good decisions on the ball and lots of touches on the ball so when we come into the pressure moments, we can execute those.”
Meanwhile, Goodman confirmed that there are no new injuries for Ireland ahead of the England game with Leinster’s front rower Tadhg Furlong the only absentee.
Connacht’s Finlay Bealham is set to start in his place with Dan Sheehan expected to get the nod at hooker ahead of Ronan Kelleher after his return from an ACL injury on Saturday.
The other big calls are in the second row, where Tadhg Beirne could get the nod alongside Joe McCarthy, while Mack Hansen could get the nod on the right wing.
