‘I feel like a broken woman’ – Emotional mum of Gareth Hutch holds back tears as she remembers ‘horrible’ shooting
THE emotional mum of Gareth Hutch, who was shot dead in 2016, has remember the “horrible” call she received.
Heartbroken Vera Hutch watched yesterday as assassin Thomas ‘Nicky’ McConnell sat emotionless in the dock at Dublin’s Special Criminal Court.
McConnell, who was also a person of interest in the murder of Real IRA boss Vincent Ryan, was handed down the mandatory life sentence by Mr Justice Alexander Owens over the callous murder of Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch’s nephew in 2016 after he was convicted in December.
He is the fourth person to be convicted of murder in relation to Hutch’s killing, with siblings Jonathan and Regina Keogh along with Thomas ‘Tossy’ Fox already serving life behind bars.
Speaking tonight with RTE’s Prime Time, Vera was overwhelmed with emotion as she recalled the day in 2016 she received the call no parent wants to get.
HORROR CALL
She said: “My phone rang, it was my niece, I couldn’t hear her. As I went to pull in, Johnny was there in the middle of the road and he was waving his hands.
“I said ‘what’s wrong?’ He said ‘Gareth’s after getting shot’.
“We drove in and Gareth was on the ground. I’ll never forget it as long as I live, horrible.”
Following Gareth’s death, footage began circulating online showing the exact moment he was shot.
This was later played in court, while Vera and her children were present.
She said: “Even when it was playing in court, I couldn’t look at it.”
SECOND ATTACK
Vera described her late husband Johnny, who died following a fall at home in 2019, as “broken” following their son’s death.
Gareth’s death was followed by an attempt on Johnny’s life, with gunmen shooting into their family car and later garden.
The couple’s two daughters Amy and Carol, who has special needs, were also in the home at the time.
Vera said: “I was looking at a man fire shots into the back [of the house].. there was that many shots that they got fired, I didn’t know was Johnny dead or her alive, [or] was Carol dead or alive.”
‘BROKEN WOMAN’
She added: “I feel like a broken woman, you know, since that. They don’t know what they’re putting people through.”
Amy added: “I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, between cars getting burned, houses getting burned.”
Despite not being involved with the Hutch-Kinahan feud, the family have found living with the now infamous surname difficult.
Vera said: “You mention the Hutch name and everyone looks around. Don’t get me wrong. I’m proud of the name, I’m proud of Johnny, like but once you mention the name, everyone looks around.
“I don’t think it’s as bad now as what it was when the feuds were on.”

CHANCELLOR Rachel Reeves will set out her goals for growth today — backing the construction of Britain’s biggest football ground.
The Sun can reveal Manchester United’s plans for a 100,000-seater mega-stadium will “generate growth” to the tune of £7billion every year.
Rachel Reeves has backed the construction of Britain’s biggest football ground[/caption] Manchester United’s plans for a new 100,000-seater mega-stadium will ‘generate growth’ to the tune of more than £7billion every year[/caption]Ms Reeves is expected to give the residential, transport and entertainment development at Old Trafford the green light — and back a new runway at Heathrow and possibly Gatwick airport too.
She has warned “low growth is not our destiny but growth will not come without a fight”.
All the decisions risk a major backlash from other parts of Britain desperate for similar investment.
Newcastle United and Aston Villa are also keen for government support for stadium developments and scores of Labour MPs may attempt to block any airport expansions.
But the Chancellor will insist she is “on the side of working people . . . willing to take the right decisions now to change our country’s course for the better”.
In a speech in Oxfordshire, she will say: “Britain’s potential has been held back for too long. We have accepted low expectations, stagnation and the risk of decline. We can do so much better.
“We are at the forefront of some of the most exciting developments in the world like artificial intelligence and life sciences. We have great companies, delivering jobs and investment in Britain.
“And we have fundamental strengths — in our history, our language, and our legal system — to compete in a global economy.”
Ms Reeves will also back a new rail link from Oxford to Cambridge, which will add an estimated £78billion to the economy over the next decade.
PM Sir Keir Starmer yesterday threw down the gauntlet to his ministers yesterday, saying growth must be “hard-wired into all Cabinet decisions”.
Last night, Tory Shadow Business Secretary Andrew Griffiths hit out, saying: “Words are cheap but a growth strategy cannot just be infrastructure projects for the 2030s.”
RTE Fair City viewers all left fuming after Hughie is roped into Paul’s ‘dodgy’ car dealing
RTE Fair City viewers have all been left raging after Hughes was roped into Paul into Pete’s “tangled web of lies”.
On tonight’s episode, Pete and Paul put their antagonism aside and worked together when J.J. suggested their partnership had a future.
Pete called off his car deal with Hughie last minute[/caption] Hughie accused Pete of a shakedown[/caption]But, Hughie and Paul were thrown when Pete wouldn’t finalise the deal after he realised the logbook was wrong.
Pete worried the car was stolen and wondered J.J. was aware.
When Pete called the deal off with Hughie, Hughie accused him of a shakedown.
Paul stepped in to keep the deal alive, much to Pete’s annoyance.
Pete then tried to broach the topic of the car’s provenance to an affronted J.J.
Under pressure from J.J., Pete and Paul were left with no choice but to close the sale with Hughie.
Pete completed the sale with Paul’s support, but Pete was left feeling guilty.
And RTE viewers were all left making the same complaint as they took to social media to share their reactions.
Ciara wrote: “Poor Hughie has awful luck.”
Pamela said: “Poor auld Hughie had no joy does he.”
