Demand for answers after Irish town tourism project to replace signs costs €670k with move blasted as ‘wanton waste’
A POLITICIAN has called on a local authority to explain how a town tourism project to replace some signs could cost €670,000.
Cork County councillor Danny Collins said Cork County Council said the public has a right to know all the details and costings of a €670,000 Destination Town Project, which includes a stainless steel information portal in Bantry’s town square, according to a local politician.
A local rep has called for answer from Cork County Council[/caption] An explanation is wanted for how a town tourism project to replace some signs could cost €670,000[/caption]He said the council needs to be more transparent and to communicate better with the public and councillors as rumours flew that the portal alone which replaced a bus stop was costing tens of thousands of euros.
He said: “The story that went out first was untrue. It claimed that this one structure, the portal was costing €670,000.
“In fact there are different projects being done over the past year in the town with the help of a Failte Ireland grant and funding by Cork County Council.
“There are different signs, fingerpost signs, seating, lighting, pavement works all of which is contributing to the €670,000.
“It’s all done to provide information about the town for visitors and locals and includes signs with the history of the town and other interesting historical facts including Wolfe Tone and others.
“I have put in a motion for our next Council meeting looking for details of all the projects involved in this and the costing of same.
“Any decision taken in respect of these works is done by executive decision not by the councillors.
“I am also asking that for future works in any town or village they be brought to us first, the councillors and community groups from the areas.
“We are on the frontline and we need to have accurate information otherwise what happened with the misinformation circulating about the portal will continue to happen.”
The Southern Star newspaper first highlighted the cost of the project who quoted locals as describing the project, and the new portal in particular, as “wanton waste” and a “waste of taxpayers’ money”.
Cork County Council said the overall costing €670,000 was for the entire Destination Towns Programme and not for a single sign.
In a statement to RTE, the local authority said that Failte Ireland paid €500,000 of the cost, with the Council matching funding by 25 per cent.
The town was chosen as part of a national scheme given its strategic importance as a tourist destination.
SIGN TARGETS
The new tourism signage targets cruise and ferry visitors.
The project involved the removal of 20 existing signs; improving seating and street furniture; lighting and paving; and erecting new stainless-steel signs, the Council said.
These include one large stainless-steel portal on Wolfe Tone Square, six totem signs, eight lectern structures and eight directional fingerpost signs at key locations around the town.

He has been married to the interior designer since 2013, when they tied the knot at the Palácio de S. Marcos church in Coimbra.
The couple were snapped out together as the Portuguese coach celebrated his birthday.
They headed out for a celebratory lunch in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
The venue is a regular hotspot for famous faces with Cristiano Ronaldo claimed to be a regular.
Wantaway Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was spotted at the restaurant in December.
Amorim could be seen wearing a black puffer jacket and matching trousers.
Maria wore a warm, fluffy jacket paired with tights and a skirt.
Maria and Ruben are blessed with two children.
The jubilations followed on from the Red Devils victory over Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday night.
Lisandro Martinez’s goal was enough to give the struggling Man United the win.
The three points has lifted Amorim’s side to 12th place in the league table, just above Crystal Palace and West Ham.
Meanwhile, Amorim has put Man United striker Rasmus Hojlund on trial until the end of the season.
The manager is not convinced of the former Atalanta man, and if he does not impress in the remainder of the campaign, he could be sold in the summer.

Olympic gold medallist ‘has credit card stolen by POSTMAN to fund gambling addiction’
CYCLING star Remco Evenepoel’s 2025 season has got off to the worst possible start after his POSTMAN allegedly stole his credit card.
Evenepoel, 25, won gold in both the Men’s Time Trial and the Men’s Road Race at the Paris 2024 Olympics, but has had nothing but hassle ever since.

He suffered a number of fractures, a dislocated collarbone and bruised lungs, with the injuries set to keep him out until at least April.
To make matters worse, he’s now had further issues with another postman.
According to report in Belgian newspaper De Telegraaf, Evenepoel recently had his credit card stolen by a local postie.
The report claims several people, including Evenepoel, had credit cards and details stolen in the Belgian city of Anderlecht.
Evenepoel is believed to have had €9000 (£7,550) withdrawn from a company account, of which the cyclist was a shareholder.
The postman allegedly stole a total of €20,000 (£16,779) to fund his gambling addiction, and later disposed of the credit cards.
He is due in court at the end of February, with a prison term among the possible sentences.
Evenepoel hopes to make a triumphant return at the Tour de France later this year[/caption]Evenepoel, meanwhile, confirmed his plans for the upcoming season earlier this month – under the assumption his rehab schedule goes to plan.
He hopes to make is comeback at the Brabantse Pijl, one of the ‘Spring Classics’ that signal the end of the off-season and a return to brutal one-day racing here in Europe.
From there, he is targeting the Criterium du Dauphine – one of the most prestigious Tour de France warm-up races – before doing Le Tour itself.
In a press release from his Soudal Quick-Step team, Evenepoel said: “I want to be at 200% for the Tour de France, and if things go as planned and I continue to improve, I am confident I can start there in a strong form and fight for a good result.”
New Kyran Durnin probe update as Gardai in ‘some way off’ murder mystery truth admission after schoolboy disappearance
THE investigation into the murder of schoolboy Kyran Durnin is “still some way off” from conclusion, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has revealed.
Kyran Durnin, who would be eight years old if he was still alive, was last seen in public in June 2022.
A missing person’s probe was initially launched in August last year before being upgraded to a murder investigation.
Gardai believe the youngster from Dundalk, Co Louth may have been killed up to two years ago with his body hidden.
Gardai carried out searches at three residences in the Dundalk area last year including at the former home of the boy’s family.
A number of people have been arrested as part of the murder probe.
In December, a woman who was known to Kyran was questioned as part of the investigation before being released without charge.
Anthony Maguire, who was a suspect in the case and had been questioned by gardai, took his own life at his home in Drogheda last year.
Maguire’s phone and notes found at the house have been examined by gardai.
Cops suspected Maguire was part of a plan to try and con social workers by bringing a “decoy” child in Kyran’s place to a meeting.
The investigation into Kyran’s disappearance is ongoing but there have been no updates in recent weeks.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris told the Irish Sun: “The investigation carries on and I am being kept abreast of developments. The investigation carries on.
‘STILL SOME WAY OFF’
“Obviously then we will get to a point of conclusion and it will go then to the DPP but that is still some way off.”
Gardai fear Kyran has been dead for two years and suspect he may have died in 2022 when he was just six.
Last year, An Garda Siochana published the new pictures of Kyran as they called on anyone who may have information relating to his disappearance to get in touch with them.
Detectives now believe that the boy, from Drogheda, Co Louth, was killed in June 2022, a month later than they previously thought. He has not been seen in public since then.
It is understood that two women who were told the child was missing before the Gardai knew about it have contacted officers and made detailed statements.
They are among a long list of crucial witnesses who are now coming forward to help cops with their inquiries.
Detectives are also looking at footage obtained from local shops and street cameras near the homes of the suspects and the routes they would take to and from Drogheda town centre.
Gardai are trying to narrow down a list of sites where they think Kyran could be buried.
The insider said last month: “There will be more arrests and more digs in the coming weeks. We are not going to rest until we find Kyran’s body.
“The people of Drogheda are very angry about this case and want to see those responsible arrested and punished.
“We are all determined that this little lad will get a proper Christian burial.”
Wynne Evans breaks silence on Strictly tour axe saying ‘I am deeply sorry for pain caused and inappropriate behaviour’
WYNNE Evans has broken his silence after he was axed from the Strictly live tour.
The Go Compare opera singer, 53, is facing backlash after a crude sexual comment about Janette Manrara during the tour.
Wynne Evans is taking time out from his BBC Radio Wales show[/caption] He has been dropped from the Strictly live tour[/caption] Wynne’s brother Mark has spoken out in support of the embattled Strictly star[/caption]Wynne said this evening: “I’ve agreed with the BBC that l’ll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing.
“I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection.
“Apologies to those I won’t get to see at the remaining performances and I’m grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.”
According to insiders, the incident followed “repeated warnings about his behaviour” leading show bosses to remove him from the tour.
Taking to X, his brother Mark, a baritone performer and children’s author, also praised his brother’s character while addressing the controversy.
He said: “As a brother, I want to express my unwavering support for him during this challenging time.”
He continued: “Wynne has a heart of gold and the courage of a lion, paired with a talent that outshines most.
“His charisma and humour have brought joy to countless people.”
Mark’s statement comes during a difficult period for the family, who suffered a devastating loss earlier this year when Wynne and Mark’s eldest brother, Huw, passed away.
At the time, Wynne shared his heartbreak in an emotional tribute.
He said: “I’m so sad to say that my gorgeous eldest brother has passed away. My big brother was my hero and my inspiration. Huw, my darling, I will miss you so much and am so glad I got to have you with me all my life.”
Embattled Wynne has yet to publicly address being dropped from the tour but has apologised for the incident.
Wynne previously apologised after he was heard using the term “spit roast” to co-star Jamie Borthwick while standing beside Janette.
A spokesman for Janette claimed she hadn’t heard the comment.
The BBC has since confirmed that Wynne will be taking time away from his regional radio show while the fallout continues.
