New Grand National favourite as doubts surface over Willie Mullins’ defending champ I Am Maximus

A NEW Grand National favourite has emerged – as doubts surface over whether Willie Mullins’ I Am Maximus can defend his crown.

Iroko is now the marginal favourite on the Betfair Exchange, with almost £50,000 having been matched on the £1million race.

The JP McManus-owned and British-trained horse, who had his most recent ride at Cheltenham probed by stewards, is currently 13.5 – between 12-1 and 13-1 in fractions.

While I Am Maximus, who was a thumping winner of the world’s most famous race last April, is a point bigger at 14.5 – between 13-1 and 14-1.

Although it doesn’t take much to move markets this far out from a race, the switch could be seen as significant given a recent quote about I Am Maximus’ chances of running.

Mullins said he wants to make the nine-year-old, who is also owned by McManus, the first three-time winner of the Aintree race since the great Red Rum.

It’s no secret that trainers try to protect a horse’s rating throughout the season so they run off the lowest possible in the National.

But I Am Maximus was pulled up on his sole outing this campaign – the Savills Chase won by Galopin Des Champs last December.

And now Frank Berry, McManus’ racing manager, says they need to see something better from him in this weekend’s Irish Gold Cup before definitely confirming his place at Aintree.

Berry said: “I Am Maximus is going to run (in the Irish Gold Cup), he’s in good form.

“Things just didn’t happen for him the other day and Jody (McGarvey, jockey) pulled him up, but he’s back looking very well.

“We’re looking forward to getting him out and we hope he runs a nice race.”

Quizzed specifically on the National, Berry replied: “It will all come down to how he runs on Saturday, if he doesn’t run well on Saturday then I’m not sure.

“But if he goes well then we’ll head for the National again, absolutely.”

The 90 entries for this year’s race were revealed yesterday – and bookies on the whole are of the opinion that I Am Maximus is still the one to beat.

But a sign of Iroko’s intent is that he is set to miss Cheltenham despite being favourite for the Ultima Handicap Chase.

His trainers Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero want to keep him in tip top shape for the National.

Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “We were very excited to see the entries confirmed for this year’s Randox Grand National and I Am Maximus tops the betting at 10-1 looking to repeat the feat.

“Iroko has been by far the most popular selection in recent days since his run at Cheltenham, backed into 14-1 from 16s, and it’ll be interesting to see if that popularity continues.

“Grand National punters will always be looking for bigger-priced fancies, and we’re keeping a few of these on-side at this stage.

“Stumptown is a 20-1 shot with plenty of potential upside, and we think he could be a shortener should he oblige at short odds in the Cheltenham Festival Cross Country.

“We’ve also priced up a host of specials on the world’s most famous steeplechase at Aintree.

“An Irish 1-2-3 is a 7-2 chance and an Irish 1-2-3-4, as happened in 2024, is 6-1, with a Willie Mullins-trained winner of the race 5-2.”

Met Eireann warn of -2C temp drop & sleet TONIGHT as weather expert gives update on ‘Atlantic conveyor belt of storms’

MET Eireann has warned temperatures will plummet tonight, dropping as low as -2C in places.

And some wintry sleet falls will accompany the temperature change in parts of the country.

Temperatures are set to get cold over the next few nights

Daytime temperatures will also feel chilly before a jump to 12C at the weekend[/caption]

Most areas will remain dry tonight with clear spells, although some showers will form in the north and west.

It is here that some of those showers may turn to sleet.

It will be a cold night as temperatures get right down to between -2C and 1C, with Met Eireann warning frost and ice will form overnight in chilly conditions.

But before things take a turn tonight, temperatures today will sit at a mild 6C to 9C.

A dry day with sunny spells and the odd shower expected after cloud and showers clear this morning.

Mist and fog lingering will also clear as the morning goes on.

However, into the evening, showers will pick back up once more.

They will mainly hit in the north and west.

And Thursday is another mixed day, starting dry early in the day and turning wetter.

Met Eireann’s Linda Huges said: “Tomorrow will start mostly dry with sunny spells and isolated showers, mainly in the north and west.

“Cloud will increase later and outbreaks of rain or drizzle will develop in Atlantic counties by evening. Highest temperatures of 5C to 9C”.

It won’t be as cold tomorrow night with temperatures sitting between 0C and 5C.

And “heavy” rain is a possibility tomorrow night as rain moves eastwards across the country.

Friday is expected to vastly improve, with Met Eireann forecasting the day to be: “Dry with hazy sunny spells.”

While some light rain will develop over the night it will remain settled and temperatures also staying out of the minus numbers at 0C.

‘IRELAND LOOKS TO BE SPARED’

After Storm Eoywn and Storm Herminia battered the country back-to-back, a weather expert has weighed in on the chance of another storm in the near future.

Devastating Storm Eoywn hit just a short few weeks after Storm Darragh rattled the country.

With hundreds of thousands still without power and water it will be a relief to know no storms are headed our way for the foreseeable.

Posting on social media Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather said: “Pressure forecast to rise over coming days and no significant storms likely over next 5 -7 days at least.

“However the UK Met Office have updated 3 month outlook, mild wet and windy weather is 2.3 to 2.5 times more likely over next 3 months”

And he added: “Thankfully Ireland looks to be spared from the Atlantic conveyor belt of storms for the next week or more as they head Northwest to Iceland and Greenland instead.”

‘CHANGEABLE’ FORECAST

For over the weekend Met Eireann have said a changeable forecast is in store but that it will be milder.

Saturday daytime and night will be breezy and cloudy with some “heavy” rainfall.

Temperatures getting up as far as 12C on Saturday in those milder conditions and lows of just 4C Saturday night.

“Heavy falls of rain” especially in the east on Sunday but clearing to a bright dry day.

And temperatures staying mild at 10C.

Much-loved UK attraction forced to close after 20 years to reopen as huge indoor fairground with new rides

A FAIRGROUND attraction forced to close last year has revealed plans to reopen as a new venue.

Dingles Fairground Museum in Devon was home to vintage fairground rides and artwork.

The museum was forced to close last November[/caption]

Run by the Fairground Heritage Trust, they confirmed last March that they would be closing down, with the last entry in November.

However, it is set to be replaced by the new Dingles Fun Park.

The all-year, indoor attraction will have 20 classic fairground rides, including waltzers, dodgems and spinning tea cups, Devon Live reports.

A helter skelter and runaway train will also be inside, as well as a soft play area for younger kids.

The Carousel Cafe will serve snacks including burgers, chips and candyfloss.

The indoor attraction will be free to visit, but guests will have to buy tokens to use the ride, starting from £2.

Bundles will be on offer to offer reduced ticket prices.

It will open on February 15, in time for the half term holidays, and then every Saturday and Sunday up to Easter.

Tom Ellis, who owns the park, said they wanted to save the attraction after other sad closures nearby including Flambards and Dairyland Farm Park.

He added: “We don’t get the best weather in this country so we wanted to open something that will be primarily indoors, but there will be some outdoor rides like a paratrooper.

“There will be lots of old fashioned rides but we are not a museum or in any way linked to the previous attraction. It’s a fresh thing.

“We are offering free entry to keep it better value for everyone and have something in the area that is accessible for everyone. We have got 50,000 sq ft of space indoors.”

Longer term plans include themed events such as scarefests at Halloween and an ice rink and winter wonderland at Christmas.

Dingles Fairground Museum first opened 2007, as an expansion of the Dingles Steam Village Museum which opened four years earlier.

New rides in the fairground will include many of the classics such as waltzers and dodgems[/caption]

However, it closed on November 3, 2024, after citing both its remote location and the Covid pandemic as reasons for its closure.

They said at the time: “Since the pandemic, it is increasingly clear that with a limited season, a remote site and a scattered, rural local population the site is not viable as a stand-alone single-product museum attraction.”

Most of the items from the museum have since been relocated to the Statfold Narrow Gauge Museum in Tamworth.

The same month as Dingles closure, Flambards Theme Park also closed at short notice.

The Sun’s Katie Weston, who often visited the park during her childhood, said: “Who can forget collecting coupons for season tickets out of the newspaper for the school holidays, or the smell of medicines and varnished wood that greets you when peering into the Victorian time-capsule chemist shop?

“As one Cornish local simply puts it: ‘There goes our childhood.'”.

Other new attractions opening in the UK

  • Therme Manchester – 2027
  • Eden Project Morecambe – 2028
  • Puy du Fou, Bicester – 2029
  • Universal theme park, Bedfordshire – 2030s

Here’s another theme park that has been left abandoned after closing 25 years ago.

And the huge £2.5billion London Resort has finally confirmed it would no longer be opening in the UK.

Thanks to this new ‘middle aisle’, you’ll find all things from affordable kitchen items, to posh hair tools.

And don’t worry, you won’t need to break the bank, as with these cheap products, which you’ll find in many Morrisons stores around the country, prices start from just £1 – yes, you heard that correctly.

One savvy shopper was left thrilled to spot the huge selection of affordable finds, and took to social media to alert others.

Posting on BARGAIN LOVERS 🛍 Poundland, Home Bargains, B&M, Primark, The Range & More, a public Facebook group with 719,900 members, Felicity Greenwood shared a post which was originally uploaded by Money Saving Mama UK, leaving many open-mouthed.

Alongside pictures of the purse-friendly products, which include everything from air fryers and hoovers to hair straighteners, slippers and blankets, the bargain hunter penned: “Morrisons ‘middle aisle’ – and there are some absolute bargains!”

Not only will you save £40 on the Kenwood Twin Air Fryer, which has been slashed from £100 to just £60, but you’ll also be able to nab a two in one Jonas Vacuum cleaner for just £40.

But that’s not all, as there’s also a 10 piece set of Blue Diamond ceramic non-stick pans for just £45, saving shoppers an epic £94.99.

There’s also cordless straighteners, available in a variety of colours, for only £20 and even an ice plunge pool for just £40.

If it’s homeware items you’re after, you’ll find blankets for £5, diffusers for £3 and decorative LED lighting for £8.

There’s even suitcases too, which are £30 for large hard case suitcases, £25 for medium cases and £18 for the carry on size.

Not only are there bamboo lunchboxes, but there’s also a £1 kitchen bargain bin – with all things from plastic bowls to drawer organisers, for only a quid.

And if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also find packs of 10 lightbulbs for just £5.

Clearly shocked at the snaps, the savvy shopper penned: “Giving Aldi and Lidl a run for their money with the middle aisle.”

Bargain hunters beam

And Facebook users were equally as impressed with the supermarket finds, as many eagerly flocked to the comments to share their thoughts.

One person said: “Didn’t even know Morrisons did a middle aisle.”

Another added: “I just wish I could find the slippers!”

How to save at Morrisons

Buying a delivery pass can slash the cost of shopping online if you’re a Morrisons regular.

You also get priorities for Christmas delivery slots.

How much it costs depends on which you get anytime or mid-week, and if it’s for the year, six-months or monthly.

You’ll need to work out the cost compared to how much you spend on delivery without one to see if it’s worthwhile.

Morrisons does a range of wonky veg that can work out cheaper than the main range.

Check websites like Quidco and TopCashback BEFORE you place your order.

Cashback websites PAY you to shop. All you have to do is click through their links and the money is added to your online account.

Search for discount codes on websites like MyVoucherCodes.co.uk and VoucherCodes.co.uk to see if you can get money off at the till.

Follow your favourite shops on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram and sign up to its deals newsletter to get the latest on any offers. We post the best deals in our Sun Money FB group too.

Try switching all of your branded or premium goods for lower level ones and see if you notice the difference.

Morrisons regularly adds new products to its ‘own-brand “savers” range.

This is its value range where prices start from as little as 20p.

It includes all sorts of products including peas, spaghetti, marmalade, jaffa cakes and washing up liquid.

Swap your usual items for savers alternatives and see if you can tell the difference.

Shoppers can earn points with the More Than loyalty scheme when they spend online or in store.

How many points you earn will depend on the offers available at the time, plus you get five points for every litre of fuel at Morrisons petrol stations.

Reach 5,000 points and you get £5 off your shopping, plus there are other offers and coupons and the checkout and via the app.

Shoppers also get cheaper prices that are just for members.

However, a third commented: “We’ve got these in our Morrisons.. but don’t come close to Aldi middle aisle.. yet to find anything that comes close to their bargains.”

Despite this, one bargain hunter wrote: “It was good in East Kilbride. I saw a lot of them there, it’s a sort of middle aisle.”

Meanwhile, one sad shopper cried: “We haven’t got any of these in our Morrisons.”

The WIGIG range

The bargain finds come just a few months after the major supermarket rolled out its own ‘middle aisle’ offers to rival Aldi and Lidl.

Morrisons said its “when it’s gone it’s gone” (WIGIG) range is available in nearly all its supermarkets.

Shoppers outside the front of a Morrisons store in Hatch End, London. WM Morrison is the UK fourth largest chain of supermarkets
The range is available at 459 Morrisons supermarkets

A spokesperson for the company told The Sun that the number of WIGIG products each store sells depends on their size and space for merchandising them.

Overall, Morrisons has 497 supermarkets around the country and the range has now reached store 459.

Items in the range are displayed on wooden crates covered with ‘When it’s gone it’s gone’ signage.

The offers are put out on three-week rotations with new products constantly added.

According to The Grocer, Morrisons chief executive Rami Baitieh said WIGIG range had the support of the entire company.
