RTE Room to Improve viewers left ‘crying’ as Dermot and Julian Benson transform old home for Cystic Fibrosis families

RTE Room to Improve viewers were moved to tears tonight as an old home was transformed into something “amazing” for Cystic Fibrosis families.

Architect Dermot Bannon returned to screens for a special episode, designing four homes away from home for families of people with Cystic Fibrosis.

Julian’s dream was to build a space that could cater for people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families when they travelled to Dublin for treatment
Large group of people, many wearing high-visibility vests, gathered outside.
The meaningful project was completed with the help of many volunteers

Dermot teamed up with former Dancing With The Stars judge Julian Benson and a team of volunteers to convert an old Victorian house into four self-contained pods for the families.

Tranquillity House is set to be a safe, warm, comfortable home from home, and that is priceless for people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families.

Ireland has the highest rate of CF per capita in the world, around 1,400 adults and children are living with the condition.

Julian was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was two and his mother was told he probably wouldn’t live to become a teenager.

He has gone on to become a successful choreographer, TV personality and in 2018 founded the Julian Benson Foundation.

In 2022, the foundation purchased an abandoned Victorian redbrick in the south Dublin suburb of Rathgar.

As founder of JBF, it was Julian’s dream to build a space that could cater for people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families when they travelled to Dublin for treatment.

Patients can be in hospital for long periods of time, which is very difficult for both the patient and the families and Julian, throughout his life, has witnessed the low moments for patients while in hospital.

For families to visit and spend time with their loved one is expensive and stressful so Julian’s plan was to build a home away from home for the families – a “home with a hug”.

Dream team Dermot Bannon and Patricia Power QS were on board for this massive project tonight.

But the figure needed to complete this renovation was way beyond what Julian and the Foundation could afford.

The original plan and budget were “worlds apart” as the build needed a full upgrade and restoration in order to be lived in.

The initial budget they hoped for was €250,000 but it had to be raised to a whopping €1.6m.

And so began the journey of getting volunteers and companies to come on board, to donate time, people, materials and resources for this mammoth project.

At the helm of the project was builder Brandon Duarte, who was overseeing and coordinating the teams of builders, restorers, electricians, plumbers, cabinet makers, fire specialists, painters and many more construction experts from around the country.

Working alongside Brandon was CEO of the Julian Benson Foundation, Louise Doogan, who had to manage the two biggest personalities of the project, Dermot and Julian, as well as coordinating over 120 companies.

And amongst the team of workers was an endless amount of hard-working volunteers who gave their time to the build.

PASSION PROJECT

On tonight’s show, viewers met Lar Brennan and his family, who opened up about the stress and sadness they have experienced in the past when Lar has had to go off to stay in hospital and his family haven’t been close by for many months.

As the design process began to implode, they all knew that they had to work out their differences to complete this project on time.

The build was completely transformed into a whole new home, with multiple bedrooms, bathroom and dining areas.

However, the most important part of this story, is the people who will benefit from staying there.

Moved by the build’s result, RTE viewers flocked to social media to express their overwhelming emotion.

Deborah said: “I have goosebumps.”

Adam wrote: “Crying my eyes out at this – seeing everyone coming together like that would really give you some hope.”

Suzanne said: “In bits here. My new favourite Sunday night viewing. Well done all. A beautiful and meaningful project.”

A fourth viewer wrote: “What a good man! Crying already!”

Another added: “It looks amazing. Well done to all who helped out in bringing Julian’s dream to life.”

Watch shock moment Scott is pulled off Luca as they square up in fiery row over Grace

IN tonight’s Love Island there was a shocking moment where two lads had to be separated as they fought over a bombshell.

Scott Thomas, 36, was pulled off of Luca Bish, 25, in tonight’s episode of the hit reality show as they squared up to each other in a fiery row.

Scott and Luca had a heated exchange which aired on Sunday night

The evening was a tense one

The pair were arguing over Grace Jackson when things became heated.

Scott seemingly took offence when Luca said something about his partner Tina Stinnes, after he shared a smooch with Grace.

Scott then leapt to his partner’s defence and the fiery row began.

The row came after Scott confided in the boys about how he was really feeling about Tina – who he is coupled up with.

He said: “I dunno where I am… something’s stressing me out a little bit… when she’s in the garden I’m not wanting to rush over… this girl is so good for me and the fact I’m not buzzing p****s me off.”

Luca then said: “You can’t help how you feel, definitely keep that to yourself though.”

Scott agreed: “We’ll make a pact – don’t say anything to our girls cause if that gets back to Tina it needs to come from me.”

But feelings erupted at the Vegas Night party, with Scott saying he would ask Grace Jackson in a game of truth or dare.

Scott quipped: “Bro I’m being respectful to you.”

Luca replied: “Say it. If you want to go there, go there?”

Scott added: “I’m being respectful.”

However, things erupted when Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu weighed in and gave Luca a dare where he unveiled what was said between the boys earlier.

Scott shouted: “Are you f**kin stupid?!” as the row erupted in a huge way.

Fans reacted to the row in realtime, with one person writing on X: “Luca is actually so MESSY for him to spill Scott’s tea like that infront of everyone is CRAZY.”

Love Island All Stars 2025 official line-up

Love Island All Stars is back on TV for season 2.

Here we take you through the line-up of all the Islanders who are in the villa so far.

Bombshells

Each series brings with it a string of hot single bombshells making their epic entrance into the villa.

Here’s who has joined the villa so far:

A second added: “The way Scott is speaking to Luca like he’s a disappointed dad.”

While a third said: “i actually rate luca for baiting scotts business like that lmaoo.”

This comes after The Sun exclusively revealed the row before it happened.

We reported first that a source said: “It didn’t get physical but Scott and Luca were squaring up to each other and in each other’s faces.

“Producers didn’t have to step in because the other Islanders pulled them apart.

“It all came to a head on Friday night. Luca said something about Tina that Scott didn’t like and it all kicked off.

“After the others broke it up, the tension continued all night and a few more cross words were shared.”

When Tina arrived as a bombshell this week, Luca and Scott both pursued her, with the blonde beauty choosing to couple up with old flame Scott.

Since then, their relationship has gone from strength to strength and they seemed to be one of the strongest couples in the All Stars villa.

The source added: “It looks like Luca is jealous of Scott and Tina cos he can’t seem to stop making these little comments.

“It might just be his sense of humour but it didn’t land well with Scott.”

Amorim fires extraordinary blast at Rashford and says he’d rather put 63-YEAR-OLD coach on Man Utd bench ahead of him

RUBEN AMORIM launched a  scathing attack on Marcus Rashford by claiming he would rather name his goalkeeping coach as a Manchester United sub.

Rashford was again left out of Amorim’s squad for last night’s win at Fulham, courtesy of Lisandro Martinez’s deflected strike.

The boss blasted Rashford’s lack of effort in training and said 63-year-old Jorge Vital would offer him more than the forward.

Asked directly about Rashford’s absence, Amorim said: “I’d put Vital on the bench before a player who doesn’t give the maximum every day. I’ll not change in that department.

“It’s always the same reason. The reason is the training. The way that I see what a footballer should do in training,  in life, every day.  If things don’t change, I will not change.

“Same situation for every player — if you do the maximum, if you do the right things, we can use every player.

“You can see it today  on the bench. We needed  pace to change the game, to move some pieces — but I prefer it like that.”

Rashford has been a loan target for Borussia Dortmund, Monaco and AC Milan, although he would prefer a move to cash-strapped Barcelona.

He has not played for Amorim since a 2-1 win at Viktoria Plzen on December 12 and has not been in a squad since a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle on December 30.

Rashford posted on Instagram after Sunday’s win, saying: “Congratulations on the win lads.”

Martinez got a deflected 78th-minute winner — lifting United up to 12th.

But fans turned on co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who was sat in the stands at Craven Cottage by chanting: “Just like the Glazers, Jim Ratcliffe’s a c****”.

Ratcliffe has raised Old Trafford ticket prices for members to £66 in December — including kids and OAPs — and said it did not make sense for Fulham to be charging more than United.

Incredibly, Fulham charged up to £150 for tickets yesterday — with dozens of Red Devils fans celebrating Martinez’s goal in home sections.

Ratcliffe has been trying to generate more revenue while United battle to stay in line with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Asked about transfer plans after last night’s win, boss Ruben Amorim admitted he needs “a lot of help to improve”.

But he said: “We have to be cautious. We have to follow the rules and we have done mistakes in the past we can not do now, we have to focus on the team. We need to focus on the players that we have.

“We lack some pace and power up front. We need to create more chances, we struggle a lot in these details, but we need a lot of help to improve.”

“Not a great game, no great chances. We tried to control our game and play our game but we need to improve a lot.”

Fulham chief Marco Silva said: “It was cruel for us — their first shot was in the 78th minute. It was a really lucky goal. The result was unfair.”
