Michael Healy Rae celebrates Minister appointment as Taoiseach Martin reveals record breaking 23-strong junior team

MICHAEL Healy Rae celebrated his appointment as Minister by thumping the air outside Government buildings as Taoiseach Micheal Martin revealed his record breaking 23-strong junior team.

The squad of 23 Ministers will all receive a boosted pay packet worth more than €190,000 in pay and expenses, with the total bill for the team coming in at around €4.5 million a year.

Fianna Fail and Fine Gael chopped up the Minister of State roles with Micheal Martin getting 10 jobs to fill, Fine Gael getting eight and Independent TDs making up the final five.

Former Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue was dumped out of Cabinet by Micheal Martin but has been appointed as Minister of Sport by way of apology as it is seen as one of the most plum jobs in the junior ranks.

The Fianna Fail leader has also decided to bring landlord TD Robert Troy back into his Ministerial ranks as Junior in charge of Credit Unions and Insurance.

The Westmeath TD resigned as a Minister of State in the last government following a series of revelations about how he failed to declare a number of his properties – which he claims was an honest mistake.

Niamh Smyth and Jennifer Murnane O’Connor are the only two women promoted to Minister by Micheal Martin with Deputy Smyth going to the Department of Business and Deputy O’Connor becoming the new Drugs Minister.

Thomas Byrne has landed the most senior of the junior minister jobs as he was appointed Minister for European Affairs and Defence.

Michael Moynihan is now the Special Education Minister, Christopher O’Sullivan goes to the Department of Environment and Clare’s Timmy Dooley is Minister of Fisheries.

Simon Harris has promoted two former Senators turned TDs to his Ministerial ranks in Jerry Buttimer and John Cummins.

The Fine Gael leader also reshuffled some of his existing Junior Ministers with Emer Higgins going to the Department of Public Expenditure, Alan Dillon to Enterprise, Neale Richmond to Foreign Affairs and Kieran O’Donnell Minister for Older People.

Dublin South West TD Colm Brophy has been tasked with arguably the toughest Minister of State role as he takes a new position in charge of Migration.

Sean Canney and Noel Grealish will attend cabinet for the Regional Independent Group as Super Juniors while Marian Harkin will be a Minister in the Department of Higher Education and Kevin Boxer Moran is Minister for the OPW.

Michael Healy Rae was appointed Minister for Forestry in the Department of Agriculture with the delighted Kerry man beaming alongside his Government colleagues as they posed for a group photo.

The independent TD hung back after the photo opportunity before thumping his hand into the air as he celebrated joining the Government ranks for the cameras by shouting “I’ll give you your picture.”

The Taoiseach and Tanaiste refused to answer questions during the photo op as reporters tried to probe the lack of gender balance in the appointments.

A spokesman for the Taoiseach later defended the Ministerial appointments by saying that the Taoiseach wants a better gender balance in Government and stated that four out of seven Fianna Fail TDs are now Ministers.

A spokesman for Tanaiste Simon Harris pointed out that 10 female TDs elected for Fine Gael four of them are now ministers.

In a statement sent out, Taoiseach Micheal Martin said: “This will be a Government determined to deliver on the economy, housing, disability, infrastructure, and public services, as well as maintaining Ireland’s strong voice on the world stage.

“We are very conscious of the work ahead and I have every confidence in our team of Ministers from across the two government parties and independents.”

Secrets of Celebrity Bear Hunt revealed as star crashes out with shock injury in first episode

BEAR GRYLLS has done everything from drinking his own urine to eating the heart of a moose in the name of survival.

So I was not surprised to hear that the pampered stars taking on his challenges in new adventure show, Celebrity Bear Hunt, crumbled. But the extent of their struggle can now be revealed.

Boris Becker was forced to withdraw on medical grounds, while Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen feared he was having a heart attack.

The programme sees 12 celebrities dropped into the Costa Rican jungle, where they must fend for themselves and avoid capture by super-skilled Bear.

Conditions are so savage Netflix bosses had a team of survival experts and ambulances on standby, plus anti-venom injections in case contestants were attacked by poisonous snakes.

Stars including Mel B, Danny Cipriani and Big Zuu join Laurence and troubled tennis legend Boris, who was hoping to reignite his career following a stint behind bars for bankruptcy offences.

Speaking before joining the show, which is also hosted by Holly Willoughby, he bragged: “I survived prison.

“I wanna compare that to the wild.

“It is about overcoming and not falling down.”

Boris Becker’s time on the show was cut short when he picked up an injury[/caption]

But Boris’s time on the show was cut short when he picked up an injury on the first day.

Executive producer Ben Mitchell revealed: “Boris, after years of playing tennis, as you’d expect, he’s kind of ravaged by injury, so his mobility was impaired.

“He jarred his knee and we didn’t want him to risk causing any kind of further damage so he was shipped out, which was a real shame.”

In another shocking moment, interior designer Laurence feared he was suffering a heart attack while in the sea and had to be saved by Bear.

Ben added: “There was a very scary moment with Laurence.

“One of our challenges is on the sea.

“It’s called Rescue Rafts.

“The celebs had to jump off a moving speedboat SAS-style.

“I think he had quite a hard landing and was a bit shocked in the water.

“He thought he was having a heart attack.

“It was quite dramatic as Bear was the first responder because he was closest.

“Laurence got rescued and taken to shore.

“He had oxygen on and it was all quite dramatic.

“He wasn’t having a heart attack, it was a panic attack.”

Pit gives show taste of hunger

THE show’s format of stars battling for survival in the jungle has seen it compared to ITV’s long-running I’m A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out Of Here!

But the Netflix series’ boss reckons trying to complete tasks in the Bear Pit makes it more like dystopian murder thriller, The Hunger Games.

Celebs must win challenges to avoid being plunged into the danger zone – where they are hunted by Grylls.

Ben revealed: “The Bear Pit is this Hunger Games-esque natural arena where Bear will mercilessly hunt them down.

“The celebrities he catches will face elimination, basically. Bear is judge, jury and executioner.

“He gets to judge how people are doing and, if he wants to, he could give somebody a pass from the Bear Pit if they have done something particularly well in the challenge.

“There’s no prize for the winner – just bragging rights.”

The Bear Hunt camp even boasts a proper loo

CONTESTANTS who have slummed it on I’m A Celebrity will be green with envy when they see the Bear Hunt camp.

Forget the dingy dunny, hammocks and meals of rice and beans – these stars were treated to a fully stocked kitchen, booze, a yoga room, real beds, luxury showers and a proper loo.

A show insider said: “The camp is what you’d expect if a celebrity went glamping.

“There were all the creature comforts – even a secret smoking area round the back where all the real gossiping took place away from the cameras.”

That doesn’t mean the A-listers weren’t up against it elsewhere, though, especially in the Bear Pit.

Ben explained: “There are wild animals, venomous snakes, scorpions, crocodiles, but it’s about managing that risk.

“Going around in the Bear Pit, at a distance, there’s somebody from the health and safety team.

“We know where all the anti-venoms are, we’ve got routes to hospitals, we’ve got ambulances on standby everywhere.”

Jungle love in

OTHER big reality shows that Celebrity Bear Hunt has been likened to include SAS: Who Dares Wins, Man Vs Wild and Survivor.

But in a surprising twist, I can reveal that there’s a little dash of Love Island in there, too.

Stars in Costa Rica were given their own water bottles with their names on, just like on the ITV2 dating show.

Presumably there was no time to crack on with another star in the jungle, though.

Lots of tears and truths

Lottie Moss reveals all about her addiction battles as stars open up in emotional scenes[/caption]

EXPECT tears and tantrums as the stars crack under the pressure of the Costa Rican jungle.

But it’s not just the 40C heat that’s getting them hot under the collar.

There are also plenty of bust-ups as egos clash.

And in emotional scenes, several celebs open up about their deepest secrets, including model Lottie Moss, who reveals all about her addiction battles.

Boss Ben said: “This is a competition, so naturally there are bits of friction.

“There are some big, big personalities, big egos, in there.

“They’re obviously taking the competition seriously and want to win.

“It’s a pressure cooker, but they do open up about their private lives.

“We’ve got some really interesting people, like Lottie, who’ve been through their own difficult times just prior to coming out here.

“So everybody, as you’d expect, has got their story to tell – and they’ve sort of been a shoulder to cry on for each other.”

THE debut series of Celebrity Bear Hunt, with Bear Grylls and Holly Willoughby, drops on Netflix on Wednesday, February 5, with all eight episodes available to stream instantly.

So maybe book Thursday off work?

‘I don’t think Kyren heard it’ – Shaun Murphy reveals spectator’s brutal swipe after world champion’s controversial dig

SHAUN MURPHY has revealed a heckler at the Masters had the perfect response to Kyren Wilson’s “old man” taunt.

Murphy defeated Wilson 10-7 at Alexandra Palace last week to secure the biggest payday of his snooker career.

Wilson had jokingly branded Murphy, 42, an “old man” after their Ally Pally showdown[/caption]

Wilson, the World No. 2, gave an interview to the BBC after Murphy was presented with the trophy.

He cheekily said: “No disrespect to Shaun, he is turning into an old man now.

“So he needs this more than me. I am 33 years old, coming into my prime and I am having an amazing season

Murphy responded with a quickfire: “There’s life in the old dog yet.”

The Magician, 42, joined Stephen Hendry on his podcast Cue Tips to discuss his Masters victory.

And Murphy revealed a heckler, who had been calling him out all day at Ally Pally, had targeted Wilson in the aftermath of the interview.

Murphy said: “Do you know what was really funny?

“I don’t think Kyren heard it but there was a fellow standing behind me and he’d been shouting for me all day.

“When Kyren said Shaun’s now an old man, your man behind me went ‘Yeah, he still kicked your a*** though didn’t he?’

“That was quite funny.”

Murphy lifted the Paul Hunter Trophy for the first time since 2015, halting a strong Wilson fightback.

He bagged a tournament cheque for £365,000, as well as a £15,000 bonus for a majestic 147 in the semi-finals.

Wilson’s jibe was laughed off by Murphy – but World No. 1 Judd Trump was less impressed.

The Ace in the Pack claimed Wilson was “not the best loser.”

Trump vs Wilson

SNOOKER's Class of '92 are fading away - with two English superstars ready to forge a new era.

Judd Trump has declared he’s ready to battle reigning world champion Kyren Wilson for “the next 10 years” or more.

Current world No 1 Trump admitted Wilson’s meteoric rise over the last twelve months has “pushed him forward” as a player.

The Class of ’92 refers to the legendary trio of Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins, and Mark Williamson.

With 14 world titles among them, the three players have dominated UK snooker over the past three decades.

But as their powers begin to fade, Wilson and Trump appear ready to fill the rivalry vacuum.

Trump said: “I don’t think he particularly put himself in good light.

“I don’t know if it was a private joke, but it doesn’t seem that many people took it that well, from what I’ve read.

“It’s happened a couple of times, he’s not the best loser, but it’s not the worst thing to be hurting like that.

“Everyone will get over it and it’ll be fine. I’ve done it in the past. He probably means what he says, you just can’t really say it.

“There’s a fine line between being honest and trying to keep everyone happy.”
