Love Island winner Molly Smith in hot water over huge social media rule break
MOLLY Smith has been rapped by the UK advertising watchdog after receiving a complaint about a “misleading” Instagram post.
The Love Island All Stars winner was referred to the Advertising Standards Authority when selling a half-priced subscription to her fitness platform, Move With Molly.
Molly Smith sparked a complaint to the Advertising watchdog over a Black Friday post[/caption] The influencer and model landed in hot water after a glitch in her fitness app[/caption]A fan complained that when they tried to access this offer, they had to pay an additional monthly charge on top of it.
Molly, 30, posted a promotion on November 25 with a special offer stating: “@mwmplan Black Friday All of this is included in the VIP subscription which is where you can get 50% off!! Don’t miss out #mybrand”
Molly’s team put it down to a technical glitch, which they say has now been resolved – and has promised ASA it won’t happen again in the future.
A spokesperson for the ASA gave the full details, adding: “We received a complaint about a Black Friday promotion for mwmplan.com on Molly Smith’s Instagram.
“The promotion offered participants 50% off the annual subscription price to have ‘Full access’ to the app ‘including the Home & Gym plans, Run Club & Challenges’.
“A complainant challenged whether the ad was misleading as they found that it wasn’t possible to have full access to the app content without paying an additional monthly charge.
“Upon approaching the advertiser, we found that the complainant’s inability to access the app content was due to a technical issue during the subscription process.
“The advertiser assured us that they’d been in touch with the complainant to rectify this issue and that they’d taken steps to ensure similar issues wouldn’t reoccur in the future. On that basis, we resolved the case informally.”
The Sun has contacted Molly’s rep for comment.
The stunning influencer is the latest in a long line of reality stars – especially Love Island ones – who have fallen foul of ad rules.
It became such an issue that ASA had to bring in a campaign to “name and shame” repeat offenders.
In 2022, a host of big names were added to the influencer “naughty list”.
They were called out for “routinely” failing to tell millions of followers that their posts were adverts.
The list included Billie Faiers, Chet Johnson, Charlotte Crosby, Scotty T and Charlotte Dawson.
Molly signed a six-figure deal with fashion brand retailer Boohoo shortly after being crowned All Stars champ with Tom Clare.
An insider told us at the time: “Molly has landed deal after deal off the back of the show.
“Molly is quickly becoming the next Molly-Mae and could easily eclipse her in terms of money and brand opportunities.”
Molly was also an ambassador for US-based supplement brand Alani Nu[/caption]
