Stars including Kate Bush and Damon Albarn release ‘silent album’ to protest plans to change UK copyright law for AI

THE threat of robots stealing musicians’ work has prompted more than 1,000 famous artists to join forces in protest with a “silent album”.

Fears are growing over the government’s plans to change UK copyright law for AI.

It would mean artificial intelligence companies could use any online material including music, art, articles and photography to train AI models.

The concern is a bot can then use algorithms to churn out its versions with no human creativity.

Stars including Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, and Blur’s Damon Albarn have produced the protest album, titled Is This What We Want?

The 47 minutes of sparse background sounds are designed to show what life would be without musicians.

Organiser Ed Newton-Rex said: “The government’s proposal would hand the life’s work of the country’s musicians to AI companies, for free, letting those companies exploit musicians’ work to outcompete them.

“It is a plan that would not only be disastrous for musicians, but that is totally unnecessary: the UK can be leaders in AI without throwing our world-leading creative industries under the bus.”

Dr Jo Twist, head of industry group the BPI, said it would be legal for AI firms “to plunder the UK’s music, books, film and more, all for their own profit and without the need for authorisation or compensation”.

British music contributed £7.6 billion to the economy in 2023, but the industry warns that the changes to copyright laws would diminish this boost, risk jobs and undermine Britain’s “global soft-power advantage”.

After Meghan wears a ‘Diana tribute’ sweatshirt – seven other times she’s copied late mother-in-law’s legendary style

THE saying goes that there’s no such thing as an original idea — and Meghan Markle seems living proof of that.

Following last week’s relaunch of her American Riviera Orchard lifestyle brand as the more simply named As Ever, she was accused of ripping off a Mallorcan town’s emblem of palm tree and birds for her new logo.

But whatever the ins and outs of that, the Duchess of Sussex certainly has form for copycat behaviour when it comes to sporting similar outfits to those worn by her husband Harry’s late mum, Princess Diana.

Now she has been at it again, posting a clip on Instagram of herself parading in the garden of her California home in a purple Northwestern sweatshirt just like one Di regularly wore in 1996 – the year before her death.

It comes after she has also been seen out and about in frocks, jackets and denims that seem, again and again, to be just like Diana wore.

Here, we look at how Meghan’s style is to Di for . . .

HOW LOGO CAN YOU GO

MEGHAN posted this dressed-down shot on Instagram a few days ago, wearing the exact-same sweat Di did nearly 30 years ago.

Meg did graduate from America’s Northwestern University in 2003.

But Di had been there, got the souvenior sweatshirt after a visit in 1996 then wore it out in London.

Which tops Meg.

PRETTY ALIKE IN PINK

MEG gaffed when she broke protocol at a Trooping the Colour ceremony by bearing her shoulders.

The pink dress with buttoned top she wore to the parade in London in 2018 was also alike in more ways than one to a frock Di wore in 1987 for a visit to the Berlin Opera House.

Lovely doubly.

DOUBLE DENIM

ALL eyes were on Prince Harry’s then new love as Meg cheered at his Invictus Games in Toronto 2017, but her casual seemed hardly fit for a potential princess.

In fact, her jeans and shirt In Toronto were out of the Di style book, from her Bosnia tour to raise awareness of landmines.

Sadly for Meg, paying homage failed to work.

LOOK-A-LILACS

MEGHAN embraced colour in 2019 as she ditched her usual neutral hues for purple and red.

Visiting Birkenhead, she echoed Di’s look that she first showed off in 1989 in Hong Kong then again three years later as she sat alone in front of the Taj Mahal.

For sure, Di in India packed more a punch than did Meg.

ALL WHITE

MEGHAN got Stella McCartney to design her evening wedding dress in 2018 and there’s no doubt the pair looked back to Di for ideas.

The halterneck and fluid hem details are nods to a dress the Princess of Wales wore to a party in 1992.

Certainly, there was something borrowed on Meg’s big day.

SUITS YOU BOTH

EARLIER this month Meghan sat courtside for a wheelchair basketball game at husband Harry’s Invictus Games wearing a grey tweed jacket with black velvet lapels.

The DÔEN blazer is almost identical to a suit jacket Diana wore in 1984 during a hospital visit in London.

But, sorry Meg, you weren’t the first to honour this outfit, Kate did it first in 2018.

Awkward.

ALL A BIT TITFER TAT

IN 2019 a pregnant Meghan had run out of maternity looks but when it came to going to the Canadian Embassy she looked to Diana’s pregnancy wardrobe.

Wearing an Erdem green dress with matching coat finished with black embroidery, Meg was the spitting image of the Princess of Wales when she was pregnant with Prince William in 1982.

From the matching colourway to the collar detailing, this look was a right royal rip off.

BLOOMING SIMILAR

PAYING tribute to Diana in the early years of being a Duchess, Meg wore a blue and white floral Oscar de la Renta gown to the wedding of the Princess of Wales’ niece.

Bearing a resemblance to a frock Di wore in 1986 on a trip to Saudi Arabia, the outfit didn’t quite replicate the original as fans compared her to a pair of curtains.

Britain’s Got Talent bosses, meanwhile, are set to offer KSI, 31, big money to rejoin as a judge for the 2026 series.

The YouTuber and musician proved a hit on Saturday’s launch episode of this year’s series, watched by 5.5million.

A TV insider said: “ITV realise they’ve got a pair of superstars shining on their shows — and they want to ensure they stay there.

“Maya went down a storm with viewers on the last series of The Masked Singer, even though she had big shoes to fill taking over from Rita Ora.

“KSI was also a breath of fresh air on BGT on Saturday.

“He’ll help attract a much younger audience.”

KSI has 55million followers across his social media platforms, including Spotify, Instagram and Tiktok.

Younger people increasingly use the sites to view TV clips.

Maya, seen on Sunday with TV host AJ Odudu at a London Fashion Week event — Lila Moss was at another — joined The Masked Singer when Rita stepped down.

She shared the panel with Mo Gilligan, Jonathan Ross and Davina McCall as well as a line up of celebrity guests.

Rossy described her as “great fun” and said recently that he was looking forward to “doing the next series with her on board”.

ITV were approached for comment.

Barry Ferguson’s first words as Rangers manager as interim boss ‘gets sweaty’ and tells fans ‘it’s all about winning’

BARRY FERGUSON started SWEATING with excitement during his first interview as Ibrox boss as he prepared for his first day as Rangers manager.

The former treble-winning captain returned to Ibrox as interim boss after Philippe Clement was sacked on Sunday.

The Belgian’s backroom team of Stephan van der Heyden, Colin Stewart and Alex Rae were also axed – paving the way for an Ibrox reunion in Ferguson’s staff.

He brought back old team-mates Allan McGregor, Billy Dodds and Neil McCann to take the team until a permanent successor is found.

They kick-off as caretakers against Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

And Ferguson is relishing his chance at managing his boyhood heroes, after starring as player, captain and Hall of Famer.

He’s pledged to give fans ‘something new’ and insisted the “flat” squad needs confidence from his new-look coaching team.

He said: “It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours but I’m just happy to get it done, get my staff together and get into the training ground to get going.

“I’ve not been here in the training centre for a while and there have been changes.

“Training will be tough but enjoyable. It’ll be a certain standard which I would expect.

“It’s serious when it comes to 90 minutes, its all about winning at Rangers – that’s how I was brought up and that’s how I want my players to be.

“You have to win every game – the demands and expectations are put on you here to win games, and I don’t think we’ve won enough this year.

“It’s been inconsistent – look at Europe, come performances have been top class. Domestically – that’s your bread and butter, that’s what you have to win most weeks.

“There have been too many bumps in the road so it’s my job and my staff’s job to get a level of consistency from the players.

“They are a good group, they just look a bit flat at this moment in time but its our job as a staff to get that confidence back up.”

Ferguson admitted he didn’t think the call would EVER come – but he’s formed a coaching set-up until the end of the season with some ex-team-mates and Issame Charai.

He added: “If I’m honest I didn’t think it would ever come – I’ve been happy doing what Have been doing in the past few years since I came out of coaching as a club ambassador, I’ve enjoyed that role.

“When I was asked it was a job I couldnt turn down – albeit its only three months i know that.

“But its my job to get a kick out this group of players and when I’ve watched them there are really good players so its our job as a staff and mine as a manger to get the best out of them.

“I’m going to be the manager, I have brought in Billy Dodds and Neil McCann who have had previous experience as managers, I played with them and know their characters and know how good they are on the training pitch, and obviously Allan McGregor everyone knows what he did with the club.

“I’m excited with my staff – when I asked them I was unsure if I could get them but they were great and the first point was ‘desperate to come and work for you’ and thats what I want.

“I’ve spent a bit of time with Issame and we spoke about players and the way I want to take the teams forward.

“He will just need to obviously get used to a new coaching team coming in.

“But he’s eager and has a good work ethic about him and that’s important to me, so I’m looking forward to bringing him in with the staff.

“I played under some fantastic managers I learned so much off.

“But I’m my own guy, I have a certain way of playing and you’ll see it straight away and that’s what we’ll work on, on the training field.

“We only have one day preparation before Kilmarnock which is not ideal, but it is what it is.

“I’m not complaining. I’m in a fantastic position but you will see certain differences on Wednesday night.

“[Fans are] going to see a team with an attack-minded style of play and we’re going to try to win every single game.

“We’ll be aggressive – which was a part of my game as well. I don’t mean that in terms of tackling people or going over the top, i mean aggressive in the press.

“We just need to make sure we get it right.

“But when I look at the squad I do see a team that’s capable of winning games week in week out.

“I’m getting a bit sweaty here and ready to go, but every game we enter, we enter to win.”

Thomas Tuchel holds talks with Arsenal star Ben White over shock England recall after three-year exile from squad

BEN WHITE has held talks with Thomas Tuchel over a potential England return.

The Arsenal right-back has not played for the Three Lions since March 2022 following an alleged falling out with former assistant Steve Holland at the Qatar World Cup.

Tuchel will name his first Three Lions squad within weeks[/caption]

Since then, White, 27, has ruled himself out of selection for the national team – missing the run to the Euro 2024 final in Germany under Gareth Southgate last summer.

But Tuchel – who officially began work as England boss on January 1 after his October 2024 appointment – has made contact with White to determine whether he should include him in next month’s World Cup qualifiers squad.

England face Albania on March 21 before taking on Latvia on March 24.

German coach Tuchel has spent the first seven weeks of his reign attending more than 20 live games across Europe and speaking to players in person or over video calls – including White.

Speaking at the 2026 World Cup draw back in December, Tuchel confirmed that he would reach out to White and that has now happened.

It is unknown what was said in the pair’s chat, as well as whether Arsenal would allow the player to join up with England having only just returned from a three-month lay-off after knee surgery.

White, 27, flew home from the Qatar World Cup after a fall-out with Three Lions coach Steve Holland[/caption]

But Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said back in March 2024: “As manager I want the best for him, personally and professionally, and he really needs to feel it.

“Hopefully he’s prepared to represent his country in the best way possible one day. That would be the best option for everybody. But that’s completely up to him.”

White would be competing with the likes of Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James and Tino Livramento, but offers great versatility as a right-back, centre back and midfielder.

He has four caps, and made his senior debut on June 2, 2021 in a pre-Euros friendly against Austria. He was not included in the final squad before a late call-up for the injured Alexander-Arnold.

In England’s Qatar World Cup camp, White left early for “personal reasons” without making a single appearance – it later transpired it was down to a comment Holland made to him in front of the rest of the squad.

Upon returning to play for Arsenal, White was abused from stands in the Premier League with chants of: ‘You let your country down’.

Southgate – who resigned after the Euro 2024 final 2-1 defeat to Spain – later stressed it had nothing to do with the player’s relationship with Holland.

James Maddison is among those hoping for an England recall too, while Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner urged the new boss to hand Eberechi Eze a place in the squad.

Speaking after Saturday’s win over Fulham, Glasner said: “I have known him for a year now and he has a lot of potential. If he shows this then he has the potential to be a starter for England.

“In the last weeks and months, he’s had some struggles with injuries and it is now about supporting him to get back into his best shape.”
