Mars had holiday-style sunsoaked BEACHES with lapping waves and gentle breezes, evidence found by Chinese rover suggests

MARS once looked like a tropical holiday destination with sun-soaked beaches, lapping waves and gentle breezes – according to new evidence from a Chinese rover.

Scientists now believe there was a large ocean on the north side of the planet – and conditions that could have supported life – instead of today’s dry, dusty plains.

The revelations come in a new study based on readings from the rover, which fired radar into the ground to analyse the planet’s subterranean layers.

Professor Benjamin Cardenas of Pennsylvania State University, co-author of the study, said: “We found evidence for wind, waves, no shortage of sand — a proper, vacation-style beach.”

He added: “Shorelines are great locations to look for evidence of past life. It’s thought that the earliest life on Earth began at locations like this, near the interface of air and shallow water.”

The pioneering discoveries used data from China’s Zhurong rover, which touched down on the Red Planet in 2021 and operated for a year, shooting radar pulses 80m down into Mars’s crust.

The vehicle first landed on a region called the Utopia Planitia, and travelled 1.2 miles across to slopes which scientists think are remnants of a 4billion-year-old shoreline.

The radar probe showed there are thick layers of sandy rock underground, sloping down at around 15 degrees.

This is a similar angle to the shorelines on Earth, suggesting Mars had beaches much like our own.

Researchers even analysed the tiny particles of rock to show they are about the same size as a grain of sand.

This helped scientists to conclude that Mars once had a large ocean of liquid water – something the planet is far too cold to support today, where temperatures sit around -65 Celsius.

The ocean and beaches existed on Mars when it had a much thicker atmosphere and warmer climate.

Professor Michael Manga of the University of California, Berkeley, another co-author of the paper, said: “The structures don’t look like sand dunes. They don’t look like an impact crater. They don’t look like lava flows. That’s when we started thinking about oceans.”

He continued: “These features have both the right orientation and the right slope to support the idea that there was an ocean for a long period of time to accumulate the sand-like beach.”

The study authors believe that rivers carried sand and sediment to the ocean from higher ground, which was the spread across the shoreline to form beaches.

The discovery of an ocean that once rippled across Mars’s surface also raises new prospects that life could once have bloomed on our solar-system neighbour.

Researchers now believe Mars could have been wet and warm for tens of millions of years – a potential window for alien life to prosper.

Prof Manga said: “The capabilities of the Zhurong rover have allowed us to understand the geologic history of the planet in an entirely new way.

“Its ground-penetrating radar gives us a view of the subsurface of the planet, which allows us to do geology that we could have never done before.

“All these incredible advancements in technology have made it possible to do basic science that is revealing a trove of new information about Mars.”

The rover used a combination of high and low frequency radar in order to “see” the underground formations.

‘Get your act together!’ – Snooker legend Jimmy White in scathing Ronnie O’Sullivan dig ahead of 2025 World Championship

JIMMY WHITE has made a scathing dig at Ronnie O’Sullivan ahead of the 2025 World Championship.

The tournament is set to start on April 19 and will run until May 5 at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.

O’Sullivan has been absent from recent tournaments[/caption]

O’Sullivan, 49, has not played since breaking his cue at the Champions League in January.

He has since withdrawn from the Masters, German Masters and Welsh Open in recent weeks.

The Rocket’s absences have not gone unnoticed by his pal and snooker legend, White.

The six-time world champion fired a scathing dig at O’Sullivan while speaking with Stephen Hendry.

As the two played snooker on Henry’s YouTube channel, he said: “Of course he would.

“But I think you know you have to get your act together.

“You can’t keep not playing in competitions then expect.

“Okay he did have that year out and come back and win it.

“He still practices, he is still playing all the time.”

White also recently suggested that O’Sullivan was closing on a return to the felt.

Last week, O’Sullivan revealed that he is planning to make his comeback at the World Grand Prix in Hong Kong.

He said: “I am really looking forward to coming to Hong Kong to play in the World Grand Prix.

“I have just been having a little break to keep myself fresh. I am excited to see you all.”

Meanwhile, O’Sullivan has put his £2million home up for sale following his split from ex-fiancee Laila Rouass.

Records show the property was bought in 2018 for £1.4m, which means O’Sullivan could make a tidy profit from the sale.

Inside Ronnie's colourful career

FROM his lightning breaks to blasts at officials, Ronnie O'Sullivan has fired snooker into the spotlight.

The seven-time world champion makes almost as big an impact away from the table as on it.

O’Sullivan has three children – two daughters and a son.

And the Rocket’s on-off relationship with British actress Laila Rouass has also hit the headlines.

He has opened up on battles with his weight and addiction.

While the controversial cueist reckons he wasted NINE YEARS of his career by partying too hard.

Despite being worth £14million, O’Sullivan is renowned for his love of canal boats and snubbing flashy cars.

His rivalry with fellow star Judd Trump has been branded ‘snooker’s greatest feud’.

And Ali Carter had his nose knocked out of joint by the Rocket in their infamous ‘Snotgate’ row.

Kilmarnock vs Rangers: Barry Ferguson’s first game as Gers head coach pits his wits against old team mate

BARRY FERGUSON’s first game as the interim Rangers head coach will see him take on one of his former Ibrox team mates.

The Gers hero was announced as the club’s caretaker manager yesterday, assisted by three fellow Light Blues legends.

He will go up against former team mate Derek McInnes[/caption]

Ferguson, 47, won 15 trophies across two spells with his boyhood heroes and in that first spell he played alongside current Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes.

Indeed, the young Ferguson’s emergence in the midfield arguably played a part in McInnes eventually leaving Gers in 2000.

The two will now pit their wits against one another in the dugout, with McInnes’ vast coaching experience going against Ferguson’s relatively sparse managerial record.

When it comes to the two teams themselves, Rangers of course go into this one on the back of another shock defeat, this time to St Mirren at Ibrox, and the 2-0 loss was enough for Philippe Clement to finally lose his job.

Killie meanwhile were beaten 3-2 by Hearts at Tynecastle, leaving them in ninth position in the Premiership table.

Here’s all you need to know ahead of the match.

What time does Kilmarnock vs Rangers kick off?

  • Kilmarnock vs Rangers takes place tomorrow night, February 26
  • The match will kick off at 8pm
  • It will be held at Rugby Park

Is Kilmarnock vs Rangers on TV and can I live stream it?

  • Yes, Kilmarnock vs Rangers IS live on TV in the UK
  • It will be shown on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football
  • The coverage starts at 7.15pm, 45 minutes before kick-off

Team news

How Ferguson approaches his first game as Rangers manager is anyone’s guess.

He was a fan of 4-4-2 at Clyde but used a 4-2-3-1 at Alloa.

In terms of injuries, that’s one thing he and Clement will have in common.

Ferguson won’t be able to call upon Connor Barron, John Souttar and Dujon Sterling for the clash in Ayrshire.

McInnes meanwhile has been dealing with injuries to captain Kyle Vassell and defender Stuart Findlay and while both of them are expected to return soon, this one might be a game too soon.

I lost 12st after being called a ‘fat cow’ but hate that now I’m a magnet for shallow men who just want sex

CHERYNE Guebbas transformed her life after losing 12 stone, but her success came with an unexpected downside – unwanted catcalls from men.

Growing up, the now 28-year-old was mocked for her weight, with her first memory of bullying happening when she was just six years old and weighed seven stone.

“At school everyone made fun of me, so I took refuge in food,” she explained.

At her heaviest Cheryne, from Montbéliard, France, reached 25 stone.

Yet, she still considered herself healthy, despite her size and the cruel comments from strangers.

Online, people would ask her, “Aren’t you ashamed to show this picture? How come you’re married with that weight?” or the more familiar “fat cow,” she said.

“I honestly thought I was fine before I lost weight,” she said.

Sometimes it was more subtle, like, “Too bad, you’ve got a beautiful face’, ‘You’d be so beautiful if you were thin,” she said,

It wasn’t until everyday tasks became harder, like getting dressed she realised something needed to change.

The turning point came when she took her six-year-old son, Abdal-Malick, to a soft play centre.

After losing sight of him, she realised she couldn’t climb into the play area to look for him.

Luckily, her son was fine, but the incident “scared”, Cheryne.

The mum decided to have gastric bypass surgery, one of the most common weight loss procedures in the world.

It’s often performed on those for who other forms of weight loss, such as diet and exercise, have not worked.

“It was a tough decision,” she said, but she believed the benefits—better health and mobility – were worth the risk.

During the procedure staples are used to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach.

This means it takes less food to make you feel full and you’ll absorb fewer calories from the food you eat.

Patients must stick to a strict diet and exercise plan after the operation.

Many people find that they are left with lose folds of skin after they lose weight which can require further surgery to correct.

Gastric bypass surgery also comes with many potentially fatal risks, including internal bleeding and blood clots, according to the NHS.

Since having surgery in 2021, Cheryne has lost 12-and-a-half stone.

Even though she unexpectedly fell pregnant with her son Luqman and separated from her husband, Cheryne stuck to a strict gym routine.

“I went to the gym every day after dropping off my son.

“I worked on my arms on Mondays, my thighs and buttocks on Tuesdays, and my back on Wednesdays,” she explained.

Her eating habits changed too.

How to lose weight without surgery

There are various other ways to lose weight without going under the knife.

According to the NHS, to get the best possible start on its weight loss plan, there are the seven steps you should follow.

  1. get active for 150 minutes a week – you can break this up into shorter sessions
  2. aim to get your 5 A Day – 80g of fresh, canned or frozen fruit or vegetables count as 1 portion
  3. aim to lose 1 to 2lbs, or 0.5 to 1kg, a week
  4. read food labels – products with more green colour coding than amber and red are often a healthier option
  5. swap sugary drinks for water – if you do not like the taste, add slices of lemon or lime for flavour
  6. cut down on food that’s high in sugar and fat – start by swapping sugary cereal for wholegrain alternatives
  7. share your weight loss plan with someone you trust – they can help motivate you when you have a bad da

“It’s impossible for me to finish a McDonald’s Menu, even a happy meal,” she said.

She now eats smaller, balanced meals and no longer craves junk food.

Male harassment

With her weight loss, Cheryne has gained confidence, but she’s also faced unwanted attention.

“The only drawback I can think of is that, with the weight loss, men are more attracted to my looks than my personality,” she said.

“They openly say that ‘I’m good’ or they’d like to ‘see me in bed.’”

Cheryne said she will just ignore these outrageous comments and put on her AirPods to show she is not interested.

Today, Cheryne can walk 20 km a day without feeling tired, and most importantly, she can play with her children like never before.

“I can finally play with my children normally,” she said, a testament to the positive weight loss has made to her everyday life.

A LOVE Island secret feud has been unexpectedly revealed.

Fresh out of the villa and speaking on Cosmopolitan’s Up Close podcast with her man Curtis Pritchard, Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu made a savage but subtle swipe at a fellow Love Island co-star.

The pair were asked if there was anyone they knew before the villa that came across differently on the show.

This ended up leading to Ekin-Su making a subtle yet savage swipe at Gemma Owen after making a veiled jibe.

Curtis said India Reynolds, touching on how she “came out of her shell a little bit”.

Ekin then said: “Such a shame she went early. Really nice girl, got on well with her.”

She then replied to the question with her response, saying: “I would say probably Luca for me, because we did the same series together.

“You know, Luca in my series was, I think like, you know, he was with Gemma at the time and I was with my ex.

“But I think it’s just nice to see Luca happy, and I’m just proud that he found someone.”

She added: “Definitely for me, he definitely came out of his shell more on my season, and just been himself and been vulnerable which has been lovely to see.”

Curtis then said: “Luca did go on a big journey in there,” adding how during week one he was “true to himself”.

“He didn’t fancy anyone, he basically just said how it was,” he added.

Ekin then chimed in, saying: “He could have played the came and just, you know, but he was very real to himself and he stuck there until he found the right connection.”

“Yeah, I didn’t know him before, but I do have to respect him for that to be fair. He did stick to his guns,” Curtis added.

Ekin and Luca both appeared in the 2022 summer series of Love Island, where they both found love in the villa.

Turkish actress Ekin-Su entered the villa on day three as a bombshell and won the show alongside Davide Sanclimenti.

Love Island winners - where they are now

EVERY year Love Island opens its doors to more sexy Islanders who are hoping for a holiday romance that could turn into more.

2017 – Kem Cetinay and Amber Davies had lots of ups and downs in the villa but went on to win. STATUS: Broken up.

2016Nathan Massey and Cara De La Hoyde were together from the start of the series, and since they won the show they’ve had two kids and are married. STATUS: Still together.

2015 – Despite poor Jess Hayes being Max Morley’s second choice on the show, they did win – but they didn’t last as a couple. STATUS: Broken up.

Meanwhile, Luca was an OG cast member and soon found love with Gemma Owen.

The pair ended up finishing on the show as runners-up after making it to the final with Ekin and Davide.

But after the pair left the villa, they split up three months later.

Luca is now all loved up with blonde beauty Grace Jackson who entered the All Stars villa as a bombshell.

The Brighton-based hunk was instantly attracted to Grace, with them soon falling head over heels for one another.

But their journey in the villa wasn’t without it’s struggles.

When bombshell Samie Elishi entered the villa, she had her sights set firmly on Luca, but the fishmonger’s head didn’t turn despite the chaos caused upon her arrival.

Iconic car brand ‘on brink of collapse’ suffers another blow as shares slump after Elon Musk rules out saving firm

AN ICONIC car brand on the “brink of collapse” has faced another blow after shares plummet.

The Japanese carmaker pleaded for Elon Musk to come to the rescue after a failed merger, but the Tesla boss refused to step in.

The major Japanese car manufacturer’s shares dropped after Musk refused to step in[/caption]

Shares of Nissan Motor dropped by as much as 10 per cent, according to Bloomberg, leaving the manufacturing giant in the lurch.

The firm already cut 9,000 jobs globally and its CEO Makoto Uchida took a 50 per cent pay cut in a bid to keep the company afloat.

It started to struggle after “not keeping up with the times” in terms of the soaring popularity of hybrid electric vehicles.

Uchida said: “We weren’t able to foresee that hybrid electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids would be so popular.”

Nissan was part of an alliance with Mitsubishi and Renault, formed in 1999 but this partnership now appears to be at risk of falling apart.

If this happens, Nissan may need to seek out other forms of financial support in the next year.

Its factories in Tennessee and Mississippi held around one million cars but these dropped to 525,000 vehicles last year.

The carmaker was given “12 or 14 months to survive” and was forced to discuss a multi-billion pound merger with their rival Honda.

Lengthy conversations were had between Uchida and Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe but their relationship broke as merger talks developed.

Mibe reportedly asked Uchida to resign from his position before any further discussions, according to those close to the Nissan boss.

The Honda CEO was said to be frustrated by Nissan’s money problems and lack of speed, leading to the nearly £50billion merger being axed.

Uchida is claimed to have indicated he would like to remain in his position desire until 2026 but recent pressure from board members could lead to a change of plan.

Desperate for investors, Nissan turned to business mogul and Senior Advisor to the President of the United States Elon Musk for help.

It was hoped the Tesla leader would swoop in and snap up the Japanese company’s US factories, stablising Nissan’s position.

When a Financial Times article revealed that a high-level Japanese was hoping Tesla would invest, Nissan’s shares jumped by 9.5 per cent.

However, Musk made it clear he has no intention of stepping in as the firm’s saviour.

While he didn’t explicitly decline Nissan’s proposal, he responded to the Financial Times report on X and directed readers to his own designs instead.

On X, he shared: “The Tesla factory IS the product.

“The Cybercab production line is like nothing else in the automotive industry.”

Now that Musk has shown he’s not interested, Nissan’s stocks have plunged by 10 per cent – the most in three weeks.

Nissan remains one of the biggest car automotive firms in the world but industry insiders reveal it is now open to mergers with other car or tech manufacturers.

It’s speculated that Taiwanese electronic company Foxconn, also known for building iPhones for Apple, might be next in line to buy up shares.

Top-rated family pub branded ‘proper’ boozer to close in DAYS leaving locals devastated

A TOP-rated family pub is set to close permanently in days leaving locals and punters devastated.

The Sportsman, on the outskirts of Watford, Hertfordshire, will welcome in customers for the last time later this week.

The Sportsman in Watford is closing its doors for good in days[/caption]

The boozer will close for good on Friday, February 28, as reported by the Watford Observer.

Locals and punters have been left devastated after finding out the boozer will shutter its doors to the public within days.

It comes with streams of positive reviews on Google including one branding it a “proper pub”,

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) also describes the pub as “family-run with friendly, welcoming, service”.

Posting on Facebook about the closure, one customer said: “Gutted to hear this.”

Another added: “So sad to see another one bite the dust.”

A third dejectedly commented: “The only decent pub in the area. The rest are restaurants where pubs used to be.”

The closure of The Sportsman comes after Wetherspoons closed one of its pubs, The Colombia Press, in Watford.

A host of historic pubs have shuttered across the UK in recent months too.

The Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, in north west London, shut earlier this month to the disappointment of loyal customers.

The Abbot’s Fireside near Canterbury, which had been in business since the reign of Henry VIII, also closed for good earlier this year.

Meanwhile, London boozer Dogstar shut at the end of 2024 after 150 years.

PUBS CLOSING ACROSS UK

The wider pub sector is coming under increasing pressure as hundreds of venues close for good.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) recently published figures which said around six pubs shut their doors for good every week last year, resulting in around 4,500 job losses.

The trade body found 289 pubs across England and Wales pulled their last pints in 2024.

The figures revealed London was the most-impacted area, with the capital seeing 34 sites shut for good across the year.

The latest data means the number of pubs in England and Wales has plummeted from 47,613 in 2019 to 45,345 in 2024 – a drop of 2,268.

A map built by The Sun reveals the locations hit hardest by pub closures in 2024.

The closures come as businesses face higher energy bills and with households’ finances squeezed.

Meanwhile, the BBPA is warning more pub closures could be on the horizon due to the upcoming hike in employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) and national minimum wage.

The trade body has warned that the cumulative impact of the Autumn Budget will create an extra £650 million in costs for the sector, worsening the outlook for publicans.

Many are also bracing for a planned reduction in the business rates discount for hospitality, leisure and retail firms from 75% to 40%.

Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the BBPA, said: “The scale of these closures is completely avoidable because pubs are doing a brisk trade.

“Consumer demand is there, however, profits are being wiped out with sky high bills and pubs are facing yet more rates and costs come April.

“We’re right behind Labour’s mission to supercharge growth and can deliver this economic boost across the UK, but only if it is easier for pubs to keep their doors open.”

What is happening to the hospitality industry?

By Laura McGuire, consumer reporter

MANY Food and drink chains have been struggling in recently as the cost of living has led to fewer people spending on eating out.

Businesses had been struggling to bounce back after the pandemic, only to be hit with soaring energy bills and inflation.

Multiple chains have been affected, resulting in big-name brands like Wetherspoons and Frankie & Benny’s closing branches.

Some chains have not survived, Byron Burger fell into administration last year, with owners saying it would result in the loss of over 200 jobs.

Pizza giant, Papa Johns is shutting down 43 of its stores soon.

Tasty, the owner of Wildwood, said it will shut sites as part of major restructuring plans.

Jose Mourinho’s most controversial moments, from poking a rival coach in the eye to handbags with Arsene Wenger

Mourinho has courted plenty of controversy over the years, including his respect rant

Following a 0-0 draw with fierce rivals Galatasaray, the Portuguese tactician has been accused of making “racist statements”.

Former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss Mourinho claimed after the stalemate that Galatasaray had tried to get one of his team booked early on.

He told a press conference that “everyone on the opposing bench was jumping around like monkeys”.

However, Galatasaray have now hit back – vowing to file a criminal complaint against the two-time Champions League winner.

It’s the latest of a long list of controversial moments that have featured Mourinho.

SunSport wades through some of those below.

“Respect”

During a press conference in the 2018-19 season, Mourinho took umbrage to journalist’s questions following a 3-0 defeat for his Manchester United said.

Holding up three fingers, Mourinho said: “What was the result? 3-0? You know what this means? 3-0.

“But it also means three Premierships, and I’ve won more Premierships alone than the other 19 managers together. Three for me, and two for them.”

He then got out of seat, gesturing the media to calm down with the palm of his hand, before repeatedly saying ‘respect, respect man’.

Fracas with Wenger

Mourinho and Wenger already had previous, when the then Chelsea boss called the French manager a “specialist in failure”.

However, handbags were flying when the legendary Arsenal manager entered his rival’s technical area and gave him a shove and angry words were exchanged.

After the game, Wenger explained: “I wanted to go from A to B, and somebody confronted me before B without any sign of welcome.

“Honestly, I don’t listen to what he says. Push him? You would know if I really tried to push. Come on.”

Wearing a wire

The conspiracy theories were really getting to Mourinho during his spell at Roma.

He was convinced referees had it in for him during the 2022-2023 season, a campaign which saw him receive three red cards on the touchline.

So, in true Mourinho form, he did what he could to protect himself. He became an informant and wore a wire.

He revealed: “I’m not stupid, you know. Today, I went to the game with a microphone. I recorded everything. From the moment I left the locker room, to the moment I returned. I protected myself.”

More touchline shenanigans

When Mourinho revisited Stamford Bridge with his Man Utd team, it took his team to hold him back as he looked for a fight.

To be fair to Jose, he was wound up by Chelsea’s coach Marco Ianni celebrating a late equaliser in front of him by the dugouts.

Stewards, Phil Neville, and other Red Devils staff members had to hold him back as he tried to race down the tunnel to confront the Italian.

Afterwards, Ianni and Maurizio Sarri offered their apologies.

Hiding in a laundry basket

In his first season in the Prem at Chelsea, Mourinho was handed a touchline ban for the Champions League quarter-final clash with Bayern Munich.

But, there was no way he was going to let that get in the way of entering the dressing room to talk to his team.

He told Sky Sports years later: “I go to the dressing room during the day so I was there from midday and the game is seven o’clock. I just want to be in the dressing room when the players arrive.

“I went there and nobody saw me. The problem was to leave after. And Stewart Bannister the kit man put me in the basket. It was a little bit open so I could breathe.

“But when he is taking it outside the dressing room, the UEFA guys were following and desperate to find me so he closed the box and I couldn’t breathe.

“When he opened the box I was dying! I am serious! I was claustrophobic, I promise! It’s true.”

No questions, please

Often, you can strike gold with Mourinho at press conferences – because of his wit, charm, and no-holds-barred comments.

But, on this occasion, he chose to say nothing.

It was a press conference that lasted just 10 seconds, when Man Utd’s press officer asked waiting journalists if they had any questions following the final league game of the 2016-2017 season.

Now most of the written press weren’t in the room at this time, with Jose arriving before them.

With the handful that were in the room hesitant, Mourinho took it upon himself to say “good” before marching off.

Assault on Tito Villanova

During his Real Madrid years Mourinho was especially spiky.

And it was fierce rivals Barcelona, who irked him the most, with things coming to a head in El Clasico.

After the game, Mourinho poked Pep Guardiola’s then-assistant Tito Villanova in the eye in an unprovoked attack and wandered off.

Barcelona didn’t make an official complaint. However, the club said: “The public have given their opinion. They are very clear that what this person did wasn’t right. The (Spanish football) federation will act if they want to.”

They did, they gave Jose a two-game ban, which was later rescinded in a general amnesty on suspensions across Spanish football.

Mourinho apologised a year later and has always continued to express his sorrow for the incident.
