I’m in my 40s and hate the ‘caked on’ look – here’s eight hacks to keep your make-up looking youthful

BEAUTY fans were thrilled when make-up masters NARS opened a flagship store in Glasgow last month.

The stunning studio, on the city’s Buchanan Street, is packed full of the brand’s iconic products.

But it is also home to expert make-up artists armed with brilliant advice for amateurs – like me.

I’m a busy mum who works full time so I have a roughly 10-minute window to whack on my slap in the morning and hope it’ll keep me looking semi fresh all day.

Meanwhile, if I get the chance to go out with the girls, it’s just the same old look with some added sparkle and mascara.

I haven’t changed my routine since I was in my 20s, and now at 45, I often wonder – am I getting it right?

So I sat down with NARS National Senior Make-up Artist Becky Moore to find out how to update my look – and discover how to get it right in your 40s.

And straight away she hit on one of the most important steps – and one I am guilty of missing out – prep.

Skincare is key

Becky said: “Your skin doesn’t just change as you get older, it changes throughout the year.

“If you think about winter, it’s a lot colder so your skin’s naturally going to be drier.

“In summer, where there’s a lot more sun, you want to protect it a bit more. It may just put out a little bit more oil. It changes all the time.

“Skincare is the main starting point – if you have good skincare, you’ve got good make-up.”

Less is more

My make-up style is fairly natural – I don’t like a lot of cakey foundation. But I love a strong eye and bold lip.

And thankfully the whole NARS ethos fits into this style perfectly.

Becky explained: “Francois Nars, the man behind the brand, believes that skin should look like skin, which is what we all want. That comes down to using less product, but more products.

“So less foundation, for example, but maybe we can build some coverage up with concealer.

“Every product has a reason and has a point of purpose. All these different layers are not only going to make your make-up last longer, but are going to give it more depth and more dimension.”

Plumping up

After using moisturisers, the artist sprayed my face with the new NARS Light Reflecting Mist, which is packed with skincare – it’s used to prep and set.

And she also gave a top tip for tired skin.

All the make-up Becky used

Becky said: “ I always recommend, if you have any time, whether it’s either once a week, once a month, give yourself a little facial with your knuckles.

“It’s really important because it gets the blood flow going. The more the blood flows around the skin, the more plump the skin’s going to be, the more juicy it’s going to look.”

Finger painting

The make-up guru matched my pale, Celtic skin with foundation, in the shade Gobi, and said there’s one mistake women regularly make when it comes to this step – and it’s how they apply it.

Becky said: “My fun fact, and this is the one that’s the showstopper, at NARS we actually don’t sell a foundation brush. We don’t apply our foundation with brushes, we use our hands.

“And it goes back to the philosophy of making the skin look like skin. All of our complexion has been designed to be warmed up with our palms and our hands and melting it into the skin.

“I warm up my hands first. And then we always want more of our fuller coverage in the centre. And I really push it into the skin. You don’t want to see where the foundation starts and where your skin ends.”

Moisture mix

I generally avoid putting foundation on my most wrinkly areas – especially my forehead, which has had deep expression lines for many years.

But Becky had a great hack for getting coverage without being left with cakey creases.

She said: “A nice tip – where you don’t want too much on your forehead, I’m just going to add a little bit of moisturiser. So it will be the same colour, but it’s just not going to be as heavy.

“The trick is just keeping your skin looking as hydrated as possible.”

Cover up

Becky used two different concealers which serve different purposes – a creamy mousse Soft Matte concealer for camouflaging redness and Radiant Creamy in Vanilla for brightness.

And the pro says it’s all about where you put your concealer.

She explained: “This is my particular favourite tip, because there’s so many people at the minute doing all the triangles, geometric shapes, dots everywhere.

“But we don’t want too much product under the eye, so I’m just going to put the majority of your product in the inner corner because that’s where we carry a lot of our darkness. And it looks instantly bright. I then just distribute that product with my fingers.”

Cheeky mistake

Next it was time to tackle the cheeks.

And this is another area people tend to make mistakes on – myself included.

I loved the final look

Becky said: “With bronzer, people tend to start from the apple and blend up. But you should start towards the top of the ear and just bring it down and take a little bit up on the temple as well.

“If you apply it underneath the cheekbone, you’re bringing everything down low. We don’t want low, we want up, light, beautiful.

“People often ask, ‘where do I apply my blusher, bronzer, highlighter?’. Technically, you do want them in the same places. Because they’re all doing different things. Your bronzer’s there to give you warmth and shape. Your blusher’s there for colour and health. And the highlighter’s there for glow.”

The artist chose a pinky colour for my lids – something I would have shied away from – and then liquid liner, which is my signature look.

And I asked if, at 45, I should think about ditching my trademark wings.

Becky said: “As people get older they think ‘I can’t wear this anymore’. Yes, you can. You just do it slightly differently.

“The main thing I get asked all the time is about colour. Oh, I used to love blue, and I can’t wear it anymore because I’m aged. Yeah, you do. You just wear it slightly differently. Just in a way that’s going to complement and still flatter. So, for example, even just try blue mascara.”

Lip service

Once the eyes were finished off with some mascara it was onto the lip.

And this was the final tip for the day.

Becky said: “When you line lips, I find a lot of people kind of do this light, sketchy thing. And then you’re not going to see the lip liner. It’s not going to do its actual job.

“You want to hold it at the tip and be purposeful when you do your lip liner. Because then you’re actually going to see it go on the lip.”

I have to say, I loved my final look – it was bold and bright without looking like I had too much make-up on.

And it’s made me more confident about doing my face routine, making a few changes that will keep me looking youthful and fresh.

Kate Winslet left ‘with a lot of bruises’ after ‘cool’ sex scene with Hollywood hunk

KATE Winslet was left ‘with a lot of bruises’ after a ‘cool’ sex scene with a Hollywood hunk.

The Oscar winner, 49, has starred in many projects throughout her glittering career.

In 2006 film Little Children, she played an unhappy housewife who has an affair with her married neighbour.

Patrick Wilson, who portrayed Kate’s lover, revealed he’s “sure” she was left with bruises after a steamy scene.

The moment in question saw their characters share an intimate moment in a laundry room.

He told The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast: “[Kate] was so cool and gracious and just a gamer – just like, ‘Let’s go for it.

“There was never one awkward or weird moment. Never one. I loved it.”

Adding there were no body doubles used, Patrick said: “I’m sure there were lots of bruises.

“Put it this way, I haven’t done a scene like that since post #MeToo and intimacy coordinators.”

Directed by Todd Field, Little Children was based upon Tom Perrotta’s 2004 novel.

The film‘s positive reception saw Kate receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

It also starred the likes of Jennifer Connelly, Noah Emmerich and Jackie Earle Haley, the latter also being Oscar nominated.

Previously, Kate lifted the lid on a major Hollywood secret – and it quite literally stinks.

She appeared on Chris Evans‘ Virgin Radio show to promote her film Lee.

Her real life character – war photographer Lee Miller – spends a lot of time smoking cigarettes.

While there was a way around shooting the habit so it didn’t compromise Kate’s health – there was another rather nasty side effect.

Kate said: “They were herbal. They’re very strange things. They all smoked. I mean that was it, they were all smoking in that time.”

Titanic facts - cast, awards, box office numbers

In December 1997, the world first saw James Cameron's multi Oscar-winning film Titanic. Here are some facts about the blockbuster epic.

The film’s all star cast includes:

Titanic was nominated for a total of 14 Academy Awards. It went on to win 11, including for Best Picture and Best Director.

The film had a production budget of $200million and ultimately grossed $2.264billion.

When Chris asked if the phrase ‘smoking take’ was used on set, she responded: “Yeah, ‘Light ‘em up’. That’s what they would say.

“If you got ‘em smoke ‘em and everyone has fake herbal [cigarettes].

“Herbal cigarettes actually don’t smell very nice. They sort of smell a little bit like burning poo, to be honest.

“So it’s a rather odd smell. But the smoke lingers in the air.”

NHS chiefs hail ‘selfless’ Sir Chris Hoy for inspiring 150,000 men to get cancer checks after revealing terminal illness

INSPIRATIONAL Sir Chris Hoy is having a huge influence in men seeking advice about prostate cancer.

Back in October, the seven-time Olympic medallist revealed he has up to four years to live, following his own cancer diagnosis.

Brave Sir Chris, 48, told the Sunday Times: “As unnatural as it feels, this is nature.

“You know, we were all born and we all die, and this is just part of the process.

“You remind yourself, aren’t I lucky that there is medicine I can take that will fend this off for as long as possible.”

Remarkably, Hoy kept his diagnosis private while he continued his media work for the BBC.

Last year, he announced he was being “treated for cancer” and claimed it was going well – though knew in reality it was just “management”.

The star had gone to the doctor in September 2023, after feeling a strain in his shoulder.

A tumour was found, before a second scan discovered the primary cancer in his prostate.

It had metastasised to Sir Chris’s bones – including his shoulder, pelvis, ribs, and spine.

Speaking of the appointment in which he found out about the tumour, he told the Sunday Times he thought “I’m just getting a bit old for lifting heavy weights”.

Referred by his physiotherapist for a scan, he went to hospital alone, expecting to be told to lay off upper-body work in the gym for a few weeks.

“I’m really sorry,” the doctor told him. The nurse’s eyes filled with tears. “There’s a tumour in your shoulder.”

Since revealing the news, Hoy has thrown himself into promoting prostate cancer awareness.

While he has made public appearances at events like the World Darts Championship and at Scottish Gas Murrayfield before Scotland hosted Ireland in the Six Nations earlier this month.

Hoy’s certainly making the most of his life, and is potentially saving the lives of others.

Positive influence

According to data provided by the NHS to SunSport, since Hoy announced his terminal prognosis in October, traffic to the prostate cancer web page on NHS.UK has increased by 47% to a total of 190K visits.

Professor Peter Johnson, NHS National Clinical Director for Cancer, told SunSport: “Thanks to Chris’ decision to speak so openly about his situation, the hard work of NHS staff and our effective awareness campaigns, we are diagnosing more men with prostate cancer at an earlier stage than ever before, so they have the best possible chance of receiving effective treatment.

“We know that coming forward for prostate checks can be daunting, but it could save your life, so we would encourage men to consult the prostate cancer symptoms advice available on NHS.uk, and to see their GP as soon as possible if they are concerned.”

Prostate Cancer UK’s chief executive Laura Kerby championed Hoy, who found time to pen an uplifting memoir Sir Chris Hoy: All That Matters last year, for selflessly promoting awareness of prostate cancer.

The charity have also seen an astonishing rise in numbers of men using their prostate cancer risk checker service.

She told SunSport: “We are hugely grateful to Sir Chris for selflessly using his platform to speak so honestly about his prostate cancer diagnosis while himself navigating his own journey with the disease.

Last year, Hoy wrote about his cancer in his memoir

“This has made an immense impact in making men aware of their risk, which is crucial as prostate cancer often has no symptoms in its earlier, more treatable stages.

“Since he spoke about his own diagnosis, diagnosis, and by attending several high-profile sporting events,  Sir Chris has inspired thousands of men to take action.

“We’ve seen a marked increase in the number of men checking their risk of prostate cancer online and finding out what they can do about it.

“In the four months since announcing his diagnosis in October last year almost 625,000 men have checked their risk on Prostate Cancer UK’s 30-second online risk checker –of whom more than 156,000 can be linked to Chris’s many media appearances.

“Our social media posts about Sir Chris have received over 2.2 million impressions, with thousands of people getting in touch asking about how they can access support from us.

“And we saw a 44% increase in contacts to our Specialist Nurse/Risk information services combined in the week immediately after the news of his diagnosis broke.

“Sir Chris only found out he had prostate cancer because of a routine scan for shoulder pain.

“One in eight men will get prostate cancer, and too many men like Sir Chris are diagnosed purely by chance, often when it’s too late for them to be cured.

“Prostate cancer often has no symptoms in its earlier stages, so it’s vital you know your risk.

“If you’re a man over 50, you are at risk of getting prostate cancer, and that risk is even higher if you’re black, or like Sir Chris, you have a family history of the disease.”

Hoy has also been putting his energies in raising money for charities.

He has partnered with M&S this month to encourage men to check their risk of prostate cancer.

From now until the end of March, the fashion giant will donate £4 from every pack of men’s Autograph underwear sold to Prostate Cancer UK.

While, Prostate Cancer UK and Macmillan Cancer Support are just two of the chosen charities who will support Tour de 4 – a cycling event born from Hoy’s vision to change perceptions around stage 4 cancer following his own diagnosis.

Kerby added: “We’re honoured and excited to be chosen as one of the five charities that will be part of the Tour de 4 event, spearheaded by Sir Chris in September.

In September, Hoy is spearheading a cycling event for charity

“We have a passionate peloton of cyclists that proudly wearing Prostate Cancer UK’s Man of Men logo, and many of them will be saddling up to support this brilliant event.”

Getting his message across

Back in December, just a few months after his terminal cancer diagnosis reveal, Hoy appeared at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

The appearance came a week after he poured his heart out on ITV’s Lorraine – revealing how he and wife Sarra broke the news of his illness to their two children.

He took to the SPOTY stage soon after to give an impassioned speech about Team GB’s efforts at the Paris Olympics.

As he addressed his audience, he relayed what it takes to be represent your country at the Games.

Rather brilliantly, Hoy has also been able to appeal to men at major sporting events.

Back in January, he was invited by Paddy Power to the World Darts Championship final.

The bookies pledged to donate £1,000 for every 180 thrown, as well as a bonus £120,000 for every nine-darter thrown to Prostate Cancer UK.

In the end, they managed to raise a staggering £1million for the charity.

Last summer, despite his private cancer battle, Sir Chris worked for the BBC at the Paris Olympics[/caption]

Hoy handed over the Ballon d’Art trophy to Luke Littler who paid tribute to the Olympian.

Littler said: “Days before, I had the news on and he was talking about the prostate cancer.

“I didn’t know much about him.

“Me and my mum sat down and she told me who he was.

“When my mum and dad came on stage, they pointed out who was Chris. It’s very sad what he’s going through.

“The limelight is on him and it’s good for him to come on stage and have the confidence to do it.”

Equally touching was Hoy’s emotional appearance at Scottish Gas Murrayfield for the Six Nations earlier this month.

He was given a rapturous applause by the home faithful as he delivered the match ball for The Tartan Army’s clash with Ireland.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer affects a small, walnut shaped gland that sits underneath the bladder and surrounds the urethra – the tube carrying pee outside the body.

It usually grows bigger as you get older.

The prostate’s main job is to help make semen – the fluid that carries sperm.

Most men with early prostate cancer don’t have any signs or symptoms – that’s why it’s important to know about your risk.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Difficulty starting to urinate or emptying your bladder
  • A weak flow when you urinate
  • A feeling that your bladder hasn’t emptied properly
  • Dribbling urine after you finish urinating
  • Needing to urinate more often than usual, especially at night
  • A sudden need to urinate – you may sometimes leak urine before you get to the toilet

If you do notice changes in the way you urinate, this is more likely to be a sign of an enlarged prostate, which is very common and non-cancerous.

But it’s still a good idea to get it checked out.

In the UK, about one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

Some factors may mean you’re more likely to get it.

This includes:

  • Getting older – it mainly affects men aged 50 or over
  • Having a family history of prostate cancer
  • Being Black

If you have any of these risk factors or if you have any symptoms, speak to your GP.

They can talk to you about your risk, and about the tests that are used to diagnose prostate cancer.

BBC commentator Andrew Coltart declared Hoy ‘an inspiration’ as the legend took in the moment and headed down the tunnel.

And he isn’t wrong. Hoy’s a hero for inspiring men to seek help when it comes to prostate cancer. In effect, he’s a life-saver.

Watch shock moment MAFS Aus bride storms out of wedding as her new husband finds out she’s hiding secret CHILD from him

MARRIED At First Sight fans were left in shock last night.

It came after a bride stormed out of her own wedding, after her new husband found out she was hiding a secret CHILD from him.

The latest series of the Aussie version of the show has been keeping fans entertained with plenty of drama plus countless twists and turns.

One of the newly matched couples, Adrian and Awhina, seemed to hit it off and have a connection, but the bride was left nervous about telling her new groom that she has a son.

Awhina has a child from a previous relationship before entering into her MAFS marriage.

However, throughout her busy wedding, she didn’t find a good time to tell her new groom about her boy.

After getting swept up in the reception, the bride soon found herself in a spot of bother during the speeches.

As her mum and stepdad stood up to make their toast to their daughter, the bride started to panic.

During her speech, her mother made countless mentions of what a “good mother” her daughter was.

As she mentioned this, Awhina’s groom Adrian started to look shocked, as he had no idea.

Awhina’s stepdad then started to make his speech, where he too mentioned about her being a “good mum”.

Seeing her husband looking more and panicked, Awhina stood up and stopped her stepfather from continuing his speech.

She then could be seen asking Adrian to follow her as she fled the room.

The new couple’s guests looked completely shocked and all fell silent as the runaway bride was seen fleeing from her own wedding.

But it all turned out well, as Awhina was seen explaining she wanted to “explain properly” to Adrian about her son.

At first he didn’t seen keen, but he soon came around to the idea.

BRIDE’S SISTER’S BLUNDER

This wasn’t the only blunder that happened at Awhin and Adrian’s wedding when it came to her son.

Earlier in the episode, her sister Cleo was seen lying to Adrian’s twin brother James about her sister’s child.

In a very awkward moment, he asked Cleo if she had kids, to which she said “no”.

He then went on to ask: “Does your sister?” to which the bridesmaid replied: “I don’t know,” despite knowing full well that her sister has a son.

He asked again: “She got a kid?” to which the bridesmaid again responded: “I don’t know.”

He then replied: You don’t know?” and Cleo just smiled in response.

Speaking to camera, she explained why she said what she did.

“I didn’t want to lie and I couldn’t tell the truth,” Cleo said. “What have I done? But it’s OK – I don’t know is open to interpretation.”
