I tried Amazon’s new colour Kindle for World Book Day – here’s why it’s the one you should buy

Person holding a Kindle displaying science fiction and fantasy books.

WORLD Book Day celebrates reading, and Amazon’s latest Kindle adds a splash of colour to the experience.

I got my hands on the Kindle Colorsoft to see how it stacks up against the rest of the lineup, here’s why it’s the one to buy.

Amazon Kindle Colorsoft (Signature Edition), £269.99

World Book Day is all about getting kids excited about reading, and Amazon’s latest e-reader is a great way to do just that.

The Kindle Colorsoft (£269.99) is my top pick, helping kids swap game-filled screens for a device made purely for reading.

It’s Amazon’s first Kindle with a full-colour e-ink display, bringing colour to the usual black-and-white pages.

That’s a big deal for kids’ books, comics, and even cookbooks, making them more engaging and easier to read.

Unlike tablets, which can be harsh on young eyes, the Colorsoft keeps the gentle, paper-like screen Kindles are known for, meaning less glare and eye strain.

Better still, with no social media, no notifications, and no distractions, kids can stay focused on their stories.

Amazon's Kindle lineup

Amazon has been steadily improving Kindles with sharper screens and longer battery life.

Here are all of Amazon’s Kindle e-readers:

  • Kindle (2024), £379.99 – buy here
  • Kindle Paperwhite, £159.99 – buy here
  • Kindle Scribe, £379.99 – buy here
  • Kindle Colorsoft (2024), £269.99 – buy here
  • Kindle Kids, £114.99 – buy here
  • Kindle Paperwhite Kids, £169.99 – buy here

I’ve tested plenty of Kindles, from the budget-friendly Kindle (2022) to the high-end Kindle Scribe, but the colour display of the Colorsoft really sets it apart.

That colour upgrade does come with a trade-off, though, and that’s battery life.

The Colorsoft lasts around two weeks, compared to the six-week battery of the Kindle (2022), but that’s still weeks on a single charge.

If you mostly read novels, the basic Kindle (2024), which has had a few updates since I last tested, remains a solid, more affordable choice.

As for the Kindle Scribe, it’s designed for both reading and note-taking, while the Colorsoft is purely for reading, with no stylus support.

If you don’t need to take notes, the Colorsoft is still the winner in my book.

Plus, if you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber, you’ll have access to a huge library of books, and we’ve rounded up the best Kindle Unlimited deals, including a free month of access.

With Amazon’s annual spring sale expected this month, there’s a good chance we’ll see deals on Kindles and other Alexa-enabled devices.

We’ll be keeping an eye on the best Amazon device deals and discounts to make sure you don’t miss out.
