Coronation Street fans revolt over shock plan to kill off beloved character – and vow to stop watching

CORONATION Street fans have been left outraged by plans to kill off a beloved character – and vowed to stop watching.

Actor Colson Smith, 26, is leaving the soap after 14 years playing Craig Tinker after bosses decided to axe the character.

The Sun revealed yesterday that Craig is to be killed off in a dramatic storyline this summer.

Writing online, viewers shared their anger and disappointment over the police officer’s impending demise.

One penned: “Why? Just why? I’m so done with Corrie. Misery, misery, misery.”

Another remarked: “For goodness sakes. Is there anyone not being killed off on Corrie right now?”

A third commented: “You can’t be telling me we’ve got yet more misery in store?

“Can there just be one episode with a bit of light-heartedness or happiness? Is that really too much to ask for?”

While a fourth said: “Why? Couldn’t they just have had him transfer to be closer to Beth?”

Craig first arrived on the cobbles in 2011, alongside mum Beth (Lisa George).

Throughout his time in Weatherfield, he’s had relationships with Faye Windass (Ellie Leach) and Bethany (Platt Lucy Fallon).

A source said: “Craig has grown up on the street and he’s become part of it so it was a tough decision to make but one that will be worth it.

“PC Tinker will meet his maker in heroic circumstances this summer and there won’t be a dry eye in the house when it goes out.

“Colson is taking it well and there’s a real feeling that this chapter is closing for him and there are bigger and brighter things ahead.

“He’ll film his final scenes later this month and then he’ll say goodbye to Craig once and for all.”

Meanwhile, actor Colson revealed his departure in an emotional statement earlier this year.

He penned: “Autumn last year I was told that Craig Tinker’s time on the Cobbles is to come to end in 2025.

“I’ve loved every single second of my 14 year stay as a resident on the greatest street in the world.

“I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up in, on and around Coronation Street.

“I’ve learned pretty much everything about life from the people who call it home.

“I’m excited to play out the exit story for our Craigy. For me, this is the end of the beginning.

“I genuinely can’t wait to see what chapter two has in store for me.”

Colson opened up about Craig’s cobbles exit on his podcast On the Sofa.

He revealed how co-stars and co-hosts Jack P. Shepherd and Ben Price waited for him while he was meeting with producer Kate Brooks.

The star added: “The hardest bit was walking down the stairs knowing you two were there.

Most devastating soap deaths

SOAP viewers are frequently left heartbroken after watching some of their favourite characters bite the dust.

Here is a list of the most devastating deaths that have taken place in soapland over the years.

EASTENDERS

Barry Evans – Evil Janine (Charlie Brooks) lured her trusting fiance to Scotland for a quickie marriage after learning he was dying.

Her plan to inherit Barry’s fortune was thwarted when Barry told her that the doctors had mixed up his medical files.

Furious that she was no longer set for a windfall, she pushed Barry off a cliff after telling him their love was “fake”.

Bradley Branning – Bradley was accused of killing Stacey Slater’s rapist Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb) after he punched him twice on the night he died.

He was spotted in the Square by a police woman who chased him up a fire escape.

Bradley lost his balance and tragically plunged to his death.

CORONATION STREET

Tina McIntyre – Tina was getting it on with Peter Barlow – despite him being married to Carla Connor.

When she threatened to reveal the truth, Carla’s brother Rob got into a physical altercation with her.

Tina lost her footing and fell off a balcony – then warned Rob she was going to tell the cops he pushed her.

In a panic, Rob brutally clobbered her over the head with a metal pipe.

Molly Dobbs – Molly was one of the victims in Corrie’s 2010 tram crash, alongside Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold).

Married to Tyrone (Alan Halsall), Molly had been having an affair with Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) in the months before her death.

This resulted in the birth of their son, Jack (Kyran Bowes), who was named after Jack Duckworth.

As fate would have it, Kevin’s wife Sally (Sally Dynevor) was by Molly’s side in her final moments.

Sally was stunned as Molly confessed Kevin was Jack’s father, before dying of her injuries.

Vera Duckworth – Having appeared regularly in Corrie since the 1970s, there was no denying Vera Duckworth was an iconic character.

Alongside her husband Jack, the pair formed one of the soap’s most beloved couples.

Viewers were heartbroken when Vera was killed off in 2008, being discovered having passed away peacefully in her chair.

Liz Dawn, who played Vera, made a brief return two years later for Bill Tarmey’s exit as Jack.

Paul Foreman – Fans were heartbroken when Paul Foreman succumbed to his illness after battling motor neurone disease.

Introduced in 2018 as David Platt’s (Jack P. Shepherd) cellmate, he later embarked on a romance – and marriage – with vicar Billy Mayhew.

The MND storyline was announced in 2023 – with the expectation it would result in the character’s death.

EMMERDALE

Sarah Sugden – After the family got into financial problems, Sarah’s son Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) decided to make some quick cash from an insurance company by setting fire to the Sugden barn.

He didn’t realise his mum was inside the building, and she got trapped in the blaze.

Nine villagers – The shocking 1993 plane crash episode brought in 18 million viewers for Emmerdale.

Mark Hughes was killed by a falling wall, Archie Brooks was burned by jet fuel, Elizabeth Pollard was killed by debris and newcomer Leonard Kempinski died in a car crash caused by the crash.

Five other non-recurring characters from the village also died.

HOLLYOAKS

Carmel McQueen – The talented singer died in shocking scenes when a train crashed into a her family’s car.

Carmel managed to free her cousin Theresa from the rubble – but got stuck in it herself.

Moments later the train exploded and Carmel died in the arms of her family members, promising to be their guardian angel.

“I just stood in the doorway of the green room and just looked at you two.”

“The thing I’m going to miss more than anything in the world isn’t Craig Tinker, it’s the green room.

“I have learned everything about life in that building.”

Coronation Street continues on ITV1 and ITVX.

AirRAM 3 Dual Edge-Clean Cordless Vacuum, £419.99 £319.99 with code RU84

Known for its high-tech yet user-friendly products, Gtech has packed a tonne of features into this cordless cleaner.

Not only does it have excellent suction, but it’s also capable of picking up bits of debris that would have other cleaners stuck (think cotton buds and larger pieces of grit).

Helpfully for pet parents, it pulls ground-in dog and cat hair from the carpet and then pushes it directly into the bin.

This, together with its anti-hair wrap technology, means the brush roller never becomes clogged, so your cleaning is never compromised.

Plus, select internal parts are made from premium aluminium, which strengthens the vacuum so it can stand up to the constant use that pets demand.

User-friendly features

As you would expect from Gtech, the cleaner is lightweight and easy to operate, with just a simple on/off switch on the base.

Headlights illuminate the floor in front of you so you can easily see dust and debris.

The handle can be adjusted to different heights to suit the user.

It also lowers flat so you can reach under furniture, while edge brushes make sure carpet is clean right up to the walls, with tricky corners no longer off limits.

It is ideal for older consumers who otherwise might struggle with a cordless vacuum.

The motor is in the base so there’s no weight pulling on the wrists and the forward inertia drive moves the vacuum forwards with no effort from the user.

There’s no need to clean the filter either, as it’s done automatically for you, while the voice alert tells you when the battery needs charging.

You get up to 30 minutes cleaning from one full charge, while it takes less than three hours to fully recharge.

Store the AirRAM 3 Dual Edge-Clean Cordless on the charging base supplied, and it will always be ready for action.

Consumer satisfaction

The response from shoppers so far has been amazing.

“Brilliant! Love my new GTech. My last one I’ve had for 12 years and still works but the technology has moved on with a much easier emptying and love the anti hair wrap and side brushes,” wrote one happy customer on Gtech’s website.

“WOW. . . Absolutely love this cleaner,” said another. “Glides around beautifully and has a really powerful suction.

“No sponge filter to wash and get dry, which is great.

“I love the little brushes on front corners that really do get into all the little nooks and corners. I haven’t stopped raving about my new AirRAM 3.”

One reviewer said it was “love at first sight as soon as I opened the box then I had it up and running in minutes… great concept and design then found it delightfully easy to use…”

While a fourth fan said simply: “Best vacuum cleaner I have ever used.”

It is available in sizes XS to XL, but sizes are set to fly off the shelves.

The long-sleeve blouse has a round neckline, and the sleeves are slightly wider at the cuffs, creating a flowing look.

In the official item description on the website, Dunnes Stores chiefs said: “Cut from a silky satin fabric that feels luxuriously smooth against the skin, this Gallery blouse is designed with a flattering boat neckline and a button-back closure.

“Matching trousers available; sold separately.

Shoppers could wear it into the office, and out for drinks later.

Or you could even wear it to a wedding or other formal event.

The two pieces are available both online and in stores now, but they are set to fly off the shelves so shoppers will have to be very quick to get their hands on them.

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

THE HISTORY OF PENNEYS

THE Penneys brand grew from humble beginnings on Dublin's Mary Street, where it opened its first store in 1969.

Known as Primark outside Ireland, the company was the brainchild of Garfield Weston, who hired Dubliner Arthur Ryan to make his vision reality.

Penneys branched into the UK in 1973 with its first store opening in Derby. The UK now has 191 Primark stores in total.

However, the Penneys name could not travel to Britain as the American retailer JC Penney had the right to use the name in the region.

And in 2006, the expansion into Europe began with an opening in Spain, followed by the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Austria, France and Italy.

Primark went Stateside for the first time in September 2015, with the opening of a store in Boston. There are now 27 stores in America with branches in Florida, Brooklyn, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The retailer’s opened its largest store in Birmingham in 2019.

It spans five floors and features Primark’s biggest beauty studio to date, a barbers and three restaurants.

Allen took a 2-0 lead at the start of the match but squandered his advantage on the second day of the tournament.

Following his defeat, he took to social media to admit that his “confidence is on the floor” amid his ongoing struggles.

The Pistol took to X to write: “If I could find a safety game, a few long pots and cut out the silly easy losses I’d maybe win a game or two 😂😂 confidence is on the floor.

“Roll on next season. Worlds next for me.”

One fan subsequently asked the snooker ace if he is prepared to play in the Players Championship, which kicks off on March 17.

However, he responded with: “I honestly hope I don’t qualify.”

Allen beat Zhang Anda last February to win the Players Championship in Telford.

He was then knocked out of the World Championship in the last-16 two months later following a 13-12 defeat to John Higgins.

I had a mum-tum tuck and it left me in agony…then black blood pooled from my boob job, says Tanya Bardsley

SHE may be a reality show favourite – but even Tanya Bardsley is no stranger to brutal trolling about her appearance.

In an age where all of us are constantly reminded to be kinder to one another, the mum-of-four knows what it’s like to see harsh comments left by keyboard warriors on her Instagram page.

The mum-of-four has always been very vocal about the surgeries and other enhancements she’s had[/caption]

Although she used to bounce back from the surgeries years ago, Tanya revealed that this is no longer the case[/caption]

The English model, who started her career in the public eye as a glamour girl, posing for lads’ mags, revealed that online bullies always have something to say about her looks.

Chatting with the hosts of Nip, Tuck, Not Giving a F**k, the 43-year-old WAG said that although she used to be bothered by the negative remarks, she no longer cares about what others think.

”I’ve got this one troll called Sharon and every day I go ‘Shut up, Sharon’.

”It just makes me laugh […], I don’t put anything else, just ‘Shut up, Sharon,” the wife of Macclesfield Town F.C. assistant manager Phil Bardsley said.

”It’s just about my looks – ‘What’s happened to you, Tanya?’, ‘Have you had a car crash?’,” she shared some of the most brutal comments on the podcast.

The Real Housewives of Cheshire star, mum to Rocco, Renz, Ralphi and Gabriella, has always been very vocal about the cosmetic surgery she’s had – and insisted more celebs should follow in suit.

”You’ve got to just share. There are so many people – I won’t name names – and they just deny it, and I just go ‘But I know you have!”’

The 42-year-old, who’s done a few bits and pieces of acting in the past, including featuring in a Lynx advert in 2003, has had a range of enhancements – from less intense ones, such as a brow lift, to a mummy tummy tuck.

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is cosmetic surgery to improve the shape of the tummy area (abdomen).

It can involve removing excess loose skin, fat and stretch marks and tightening the abdominal muscles.

The aim is to remove excess skin on the tummy that cannot be removed through exercise – for example, excess skin caused by pregnancy or losing a lot of weight.

It’s not a quick fix for losing weight as the procedure is usually only recommended for people with a healthy body mass index (BMI).

”My body was absolutely smashing – until Ralphi,” said Tanya, who was left with sagging skin despite exercising vigorously.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the star explained why she opted for surgery on her stomach.

NHS advice on having cosmetic surgery abroad

THE NHS had advice for anyone considering going abroad for surgery.

It might cost less than in the UK, but you need to weigh up potential savings against the potential risks. Safety standards may not be as high.

No surgery is risk-free. Complications can happen after surgery in the UK or abroad. If you have complications after an operation in the UK, it’s the surgeon’s responsibility to provide follow-up treatment.

Overseas clinics may not provide follow-up treatment, or they may not provide it to the same standard as in the UK.

When you make enquiries about your treatment, find out:

  • What happens if there are complications?
  • Where follow-up appointments will be?
  • What happens if you need more surgery after the original procedure – how easily can you travel back to the destination where you had the surgery?
  • How much it’ll cost?

Also find out:

  • How surgeons and clinics are regulated in your chosen country
  • How standards are enforced

And ask the surgeon:

  • What training and qualifications they have?
  • What organisations they belong to?
  • How long they have been practising?
  • How many procedures like the one you’re having they have done?
  • If they speak a language you understand – they need to be able to explain the procedure to you and understand your concerns or questions?

For more NHS advice on having surgery abroad, visit the website – here.

“Whenever I had a wee I was sick of looking at a bulldog’s forehead because that’s what it looked like with all the skin bunched up.

“I thought, I’m sick of looking of you so I’m having you off!” she said.

Despite being chuffed with the results, the mum-of-four added that she’s never experienced pain like that before – or after.

”It’s the worst pain I’ve ever been through. Cause obviously they have to cut you, they have to lift the skin up to pull the tummy muscles back.

”I’m happy because I couldn’t wear bikinis because it was that much skin,” said Tanya who’s also had two boob jobs – one of which caused major issues.

”I had them done the first time and then after Ralphi I did an uplift.

”I don’t know whether that was the surgeon but it was more the aftercare. I was out drinking, partying.

”Because I always just healed, and I was young and stupid,” the mum explained, adding she got a hematoma – a localized bleeding outside of blood vessels, due to either disease or trauma including injury or surgery.

”The surgeon had to put a thing in and just draw all of this blood out,” she recalled the horrific incident with the hosts.

”It’s really, really scared. But the Ralphi was a baby and I thought ‘I am not going another six weeks not picking him up’.

”I’ll revisit it but [not yet] – and Phil’s not bothered. A fussy man is a lonely man,” chuckled the star.

Major blow for thousands in weeks as exact date €132 social welfare payment will end confirmed

THOUSANDS of social welfare recipients will see one major payment come to an end – as the €132 Fuel Allowance boost will be stopped.

As the days become warmer, it’s expected households will be less reliant on using their home heating.

This social welfare payment aims to help with the cost of heating your home during colder months – but it is only paid to one person in a household.

The Fuel Allowance season usually starts in late September and runs for 28 weeks until the following April.

The final date for the €33 weekly payment has been confirmed for April 4, 2025.

The current rate of Fuel Allowance is €33 weekly for 28 weeks, totalling €132 a month.

The fuel cash was paid out in two instalments of €462 to a total of €924 – one in September and one in January.

The 400,000 households already in receipt of the Fuel Allowance will also be handed a €300 lump sum to help with fuel costs.

People on the Carer’s Allowance were made eligible for the Fuel Allowance, providing they meet the Fuel Allowance criteria.

Currently if you are under 66 you can still qualify for the payment you just must meet certain criteria.

One of these criteria is a means test which looks at your income.

You will usually qualify for the payment if you are already receiving a social assistance means tested payment.

On top of passing the means test, you must either live on your own or with a spouse, dependent children, someone receiving Carers Benefit or Carers Allowance or someone receiving short term Jobseeker’s Allowance or Supplementary Welfare allowance.

Separately, a new social welfare reform will see people in Ireland eligible to apply for a new payment worth up to €450 in just days.

The Pay-Related Benefit is a reform to the Jobseeker’s Benefit that will allow “enhanced benefits” for those entitled to the cash.

The payment is designed to be a “safety net” for those with a long work and PRSI contribution history who find themselves fully unemployed.

It will be available for people who become fully unemployed on or after the March 31, 2025.

The Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2024 allowed for these changes to be brought in by then Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys during the budget.
