Ex-Rangers coach who beat Philippe Clement to new job rushed to hospital on FIRST DAY of new manager gig

FORMER Rangers No.2 Andries Ulderink has been rushed to hospital – on the first day in his new job.

The Dutchman spent six months as Philippe Clement‘s assistant before leaving in January for personal reasons.

Ulderink was appointed coach of Belgian club Royal Antwerp earlier this week.

But he was struck down by kidney problems on Wednesday night while watching Antwerp’s Under-16 side play Zulte Waregem.

An ambulance took the 55-year-old to hospital.

He was due to take charge of his first senior Antwerp game at home to KAA Gent on Sunday – but his participation is now in doubt.

Antwerp announced: “Andries Ulderink is out of action for a while.

“Head coach Andries Ulderink is suffering pain from a kidney stone.

“At the moment he is being treated in hospital. His assistants are taking the training sessions on his behalf.

“Get well soon, Andries!”

Ulderink spent two years as Antwerp’s assistant coach, under boss Mark van Bommel, before leaving for Ibrox last year.

He previously had two seasons in the English Championship at Reading, under compatriot Jaap Stam, from 2016 to 2018.

Ulderink, 55, had never worked alongside Clement before being appointed his assistant in Glasgow.

The Dutchman was previously the manger of Ajax’s reserve team between 2014 to 2016 and South African feeder club Ajax Cape Tow between 2018 and 2020.

He was replaced by Moroccan Issame Charai when he left Gers in January.

My six-year-old’s ‘growing pains’ turned out to be cancer – I’m begging you to trust your instincts before it’s too late

THE MUM of a six-year-old whose limp was initially dismissed as “growing pains” before a shock cancer diagnosis has urged parents to “trust their instincts” and “ask for a second opinion”.

Kate Hibberd, 42, who lives in Dorset with her husband, Stuart, 43, and her son, Jaxon, 12, said her daughter, Meredith, a “tenacious” and “joyful” child, started limping in April 2023.

In June 2023 she started to develop a lump on her forehead, and after undergoing tests at their local hospital was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma[/caption]

Kate, a personal assistant for the NHS, thought her daughter could have “bashed” her leg, but decided to take her to their local GP surgery, where a nurse practitioner said she could be experiencing “growing pains in her knee”.

Meredith was sent to a physiotherapy session but they couldn’t find a cause of her pain, so her symptoms were left undiagnosed.

However in June 2023, she started to develop a lump on her forehead which she felt could have been caused by a bump in the night – but Kate noticed it soon started to grow “exponentially”.

Meredith was fast-tracked to their local hospital, where she received an MRI scan which found cancer was “everywhere”, from her skull and neck to her stomach and leg.

Eventually she was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma – a “treatable” cancer with an “extremely good” prognosis, Kate said.

Meredith started intensive chemotherapy treatment on what was supposed to be her first week of school – but she is responding well and Kate said she’s remaining positive and “playful” despite her situation.

Kate has also recently established Meredith’s Mission, a charity in her daughter’s name, with the aim of supporting children, parents and families going through childhood cancer in Dorset.

“Growing pains shouldn’t be taken lightly in children, it shouldn’t be dismissed and overlooked,” Kate said.

“Trust your instinct, you know your child better than anyone else on the planet and if you don’t speak for them, they can’t.

“While I feel like we had a good experience, Meredith’s first symptoms were missed and not picked up so always ask for a second opinion, push for further answers.”

Kate said when she first noticed Meredith limping, she “didn’t think too much of it”.

“She didn’t complain about it, it didn’t stop her in any way…I thought maybe she just bashed it but I wasn’t overly concerned at the time,” Kate said.

After a visit to the GP surgery and to see a physiotherapist, a few months later in June 2023, Kate said Meredith developed a “swelling on her forehead”.

“She told me she bumped it during the night and I thought sometimes these little bumps take a long time to come down,” she said.

“I thought it was going down for a while – but then it looked like it was actually getting bigger.”

“It was quite shocking because this lump was growing exponentially, her whole forehead was out of shape and this thing was rapid,” Kate added.

‘Her cancer was everywhere’

An ultrasound was taken on Meredith’s lump in August 2023 where it was discovered she had cancer.

“They didn’t know what kind of cancer it was, all her blood tests were normal and she hadn’t been unwell,” Kate said.

“They scanned her body in an MRI machine and found a massive cancer in her leg, which is why she was limping.”

Kate added the cancer was also present in Meredith’s sinuses, skull, stomach, and the lymph nodes in her neck, saying it was “everywhere”.

“We thought they were going to tell us ‘we’re really sorry but it’s not good news’,” Kate said.

“It was the worst time of our lives, we just didn’t know what to expect.”

Meredith had a biopsy on the tumour in her stomach before several subsequent bone marrow biopsies eventually revealed her diagnosis as non-Hodgkin lymphoma in August 2023

She started an intensive course of chemotherapy in the days following her diagnosis in September 2023 which she will finish in January 2026.

Despite the challenges, Kate praised her young daughter for the way she has handled her diagnosis and treatment.

“Kids are quite an enigma around this whole cancer thing,” she said.

“They live for the day and they don’t worry about tomorrow or dwell on the day before.

“Meredith’s tenacity, her ability to be playful and joyful would pull Stuart and I out of a hole sometimes.”

“Ultimately, we want to improve children’s experiences who are going through cancer and help to relieve the financial pressure on the parents and families,” Kate said.

“The charity has Meredith’s energy and when we do fundraising things, it will be with her input.”

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a type of cancer that develops in the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and glands spread throughout your body.

The most common symptom is a painless swelling in a lymph node, usually in the neck, armpit or groin.

Lymph nodes, also known as lymph glands, are pea-sized lumps of tissue found throughout the body.

They contain white blood cells that help to fight against infection.

The swelling is caused by a certain type of white blood cell, known as lymphocytes, collecting in the lymph node.

But it’s highly unlikely you have non-Hodgkin lymphoma if you have swollen lymph nodes, as these glands often swell as a response to infection.

Other symptoms can include:

  • night sweats
  • unintentional weight loss
  • a high temperature (fever)
  • feelings of breathlessness
  • persistent itching of the skin all over the body

If you have any of these symptoms, speak to your GP.

Huge Spanish island introduces ‘residents-only’ zones – here’s what it means for your next holiday

ONE of the most beautiful towns in Majorca has put strict traffic rules in place and it affects tourists.

In the town of Sóller, the local council has introduced a ‘residents only’ zone across twelve of the busiest streets, meaning absolutely no hire cars will be allowed through.

Sóller, found in the north of Majorca, can be incredibly busy in the height of summer, particularly with traffic headed for the port.

According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, Sóller council has put in place a low emission zone across twelve streets.

For anyone visiting, this means there will be no hire cars allowed in the very centre of the town, unless they are registered by locals.

Thankfully, Sóller is very walkable though and easy to explore on foot, and there’s also a historic tram that runs between Sóller and the port.

The wooden tram opened in 1913 and has several stops for anyone wanting to hop on and off including Plaza de España, Avenida Cristòfol Colom, and Sa Torre square.

It’s quick too with the journey from Sóller to the port only taking 15 minutes and costs between €7–10 (£5-8).

For anyone doing a longer journey, you can also combine train and tram, suitable for anyone travelling from Palma to Sóller with a return ticket costing €25 (£20.93).

You can still take a car into Sóller, but instead of driving into or through the centre, you’ll have to park and walk.

The councillor for mobility, Pep Porcel, said the aim is to ensure visitors arriving by car ‘leave them parked at the car parks which will soon be set up next to the Desvío road.’

All in all, the new rules won’t affect your holiday, but for anyone hiring out a car in Majorca, check where you can drive on the island before setting off as driving in a low emission zone could result in a fine.

Spanish laws are also cracking down on the amount of holiday lets[/caption]

We also recently debunked the recent ‘Spanish tourist ban’, which is also unlikely to affect your next break for those just stepping onto Spanish soil for a holiday.

Due to a lack of housing in some Spanish cities, laws have been introduced to stop any more holiday homes being registered.

For anyone visiting and staying at a hotel, an Airbnb, or holiday villas, this won’t change a thing.

While it’s not a ban for anyone seeking a sunny beach break, it could make your holiday slightly more expensive because of a reduced number of accommodation options.

Malaga has put a law in place stopping any more new holiday rentals for the next three years across 43 districts.

In the city of Barcelona, holiday flats have been completely banned with it fully coming into place by 2029.

All of these rules are to benefit locals looking for long-term leases.

For anyone wanting to head to Majorca for their next break, we found some deals for under £200.

And for even cheaper deals, here’s a little-known Balearic accommodation that costs £9 a night.

This Is The Hotel Loved By Mums For Being A Family-Friendly Resort

This hotel in Majorca is a hit with families from their ice cream parlour to kids playground...

The Iberostar Selection Albufera Park Hotel in Majorca has everything from huge pool areas for all ages of kids as well as loads of activities at the resort.

The family-friendly resort has it’s Star Camp children’s programme, with activities such as paddleboarding in the pool, play beach volleyball, even DJ classes.

Along with a kid’s playground, trampoline area and ball pit, the children’s activities finish with a live evening show and sunset cinema too.

There’s a huge selection of food for everyone too, including the fussy eaters, with buffets, pop up snack bars, and an ice cream parlour which is all part of the all-inclusive.

One TikTok travel mum with the handle @rubyandreyes raved about it on social media, praising the self-serve rooftop bar serving drinks and slushies.

She also praised the quirky retro ice cream parlour that looks like something from the 1950s.
