Unique dream job on offer for Scots foodies – landing the role gets you a year’s worth of free grub

A UNIQUE position has opened at Aldi Scotland – and it’s a food-lover’s dream.

The budget supermarket chain is looking for its first ever Pie Taster.

A man holding two pies over his eyes.
Aldi needs someone to test its pies

The opportunity has come about ahead of the store’s roll-out of its latest specials range of 11 pies.

Aldi‘s 109 shops will stock the pastry treats, which capture Scotland’s distinctive flare for food and drink and launch this week – which is British Pie Week.

The fillings include Kebab, Meatball Marinara,  Salt & Chili Chicken Curry  and Chicken Chasni.

The Pie Tester will play a pivotal role in understanding the desirability of each pie, assessing everything from the crust quality and filling consistency to the flavour balance and overall marrying together of all the ingredients.

Their insights will be shared with customers to help guide them when making that crucial pie-purchasing decision and will be used to inform the selection of Aldi Scotland pies in the future.

To be considered, pie-lovers simply have to provide a short summary of what makes them suitable for the position.

As a thank you for their efforts, the final candidate will also be treated to a year’s worth of free pies.

Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director, Aldi Scotland said: “At Scotland we take our pies very seriously, and have been whisking up this opportunity for a while.

“Our pie range has been carefully crafted to appeal to Scotland’s pie lovers, combining high quality baking with much loved Scottish fillings.

“We worked with the upper-crust of Scottish suppliers who understand our country’s love for pies, and who have the skill and expertise to work with these distinctive flavour profiles to create something truly delicious, at everyday amazing Aldi prices.

“Our first-ever Pie Tester will have the delicious task of tasting and reviewing the dishes, helping us understand which ones really hit the spot.

“If you’re passionate about pastry and serious about sampling, we want to hear from you.

“No previous pie-tasting experience is required!”

PIE VIEW

TO celebrate the launch of Aldi's hunt for a pie tester, I got the chance to try out the role.

And, from the tiny taste I got of the job, I can say it’s a foodie’s dream.

I took home four of the new range of savoury pastry treats to sample.

All the pies had the most delicious pastry crust, crisp on the outside with that little soggy give that makes it the perfect meal.

So, with the exterior getting a big tick, it was all about the fillings.

Up first was the Steak, Blaggis and Peppercorn Sauce Pie – and yes you read that right, blaggis.

This was a rich, meaty delight, packed with tender beef and a black pudding and haggis mix and slathered in the peppery sauce. I couldn’t eat more than one of these heady parcels – but it was a taste senation.

Next up was Chicken Chasni. This was stuffed full of curried meat which was lightly spiced without being overpowering – another winner.

The third pie we sampled was the Salt & Chilli Chicken Curry. This again was packed with chicken – but it was too spicy for me!

And finally was my favourite of all the pies – the sensational Cauliflower, Leek & Truffle Oil. This was super creamy and full of flavour.

Overall the quality of the pies was top class and I’d be delighted if it was my job to taste more of the Aldi selection.

Applications to become Aldi Scotland’s first Pie Tester are now open. More information can be found on its website at aldi.co.uk/scotland/pietester

The deadline for applications is Friday, March 21.
