Met Office warns of ‘polar vortex collapse’ as Scots weather map shows SNOW & cold snap within days
A POLAR vortex collapse is set to send temperatures plummeting across Scotland.
Experts at the Met Office have warned the country could soon be hit by Sudden Stratospheric Warming.
Despite its name, the phenomenon can actually make things colder on the ground.
It causes cold polar air to move down and bring about a big freeze for northern nations.
And it appears Scotland is set to be hit by a polar collapse later this month.
Forecasters told how there is a growing chance of a cold snap for Scotland.
A Met Office spokesperson told GB News: “The stratosphere polar vortex is now weakening rapidly.
“Over the last few days, the forecasts have become very confident and we are almost certain there will be a sudden stratospheric warming in mid-March.
“This is when the mid stratospheric wind is predicted to reverse from westerly to easterly.”
Stratospheric warming has been responsible for several extreme weather events to hit Scotland.
It was responsible for the huge snow storms in 2010 and 2013.
It also sparked the ‘beast from the east’ in 2018.
And weather maps site WXCHARTS has predicted when the cold air will arrive.
Temperatures are set to hit 0C around the Central Belt and lowlands while the north will plummet to a bone-chilling -6C.
It shows the polar system moving in from the west on March 19.
A rain system will come before the snowflakes, breezing across the north and most of the Central Belt on the Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
What is a Sudden Stratospheric Warming?
In recent years some extreme cold, winter snow events have all been connected to the surface effects of sudden stratospheric warmings, such as those in 2009-10, 2013, and ‘the beast from the east’ in 2018.
You may be asking why it is called a warming then, if it lead to cold conditions?
The term sudden stratospheric warming refers to what is observed in the stratosphere:- a rapid warming (up to about 50 °C in just a couple of days), between 10 km and 50 km above the earth’s surface.
This is so high up that we don’t feel the ‘warming’ ourselves. However, usually a few weeks later, we can start to see knock-on effects on the jet stream, which in turn effects our weather lower down (in the troposphere).
However, the stratospheric sudden warming doesn’t happen every year, and it doesn’t always affect our weather when it does.

By the afternoon on March 20, snow will be blanketing all of northern Scotland.
An area around Inverness and Moray will have some of the heaviest flurries in the north, with over 1cm of snow falling every hour.
The snow system will then start to move south.
Edinburgh and the Lothians are expected to be blasted by over 2cm of snow each hour.
Western parts of the country including Glasgow, Argyll, Lanarkshire and Ayrshire are all expected to get light dustings.
Into Thursday night the lowlands will be hit with snow, with heavier snowfall in the borders.
It will only be a short burst of snow for Scotland, with a system of high pressure following the cold snap and push away any remaining snow.
NHS medical chief quits in second major resignation in just nine days
ENGLAND’S top doctor has resigned from NHS management just a week after his boss also quit amid a Labour power grab.
Professor Sir Stephen Powis, national medical director for NHS England, will step down in July after seven years.
His resignation is said to have been months in the offing but adds to an exodus at the top of the health service.
NHS chief executive, Amanda Pritchard, handed in her notice last week and Prof Powis’ exit means two of its most powerful leaders will soon be gone.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting is shrinking NHS England, with another 2,000 jobs facing the axe and power being handed to local health boards and the Department of Health.
Prof Powis, 64, is expected to be replaced in the £245,000-a-year role.
He said: “It has been an immense privilege to serve as national medical director for the NHS.
“My time in post has been dominated by the pandemic and its ongoing impact.
“I will forever be humbled by the extraordinary work of staff throughout the NHS to the greatest health emergency in a century.
“I am very proud of the support and advice I was personally able to give to staff, ministers and the public.”
Familiar face from Covid briefings
He made regular appearances on TV briefings during the height of the Covid crisis and was present in person when the first ever jab was administered to Maggie Keenan in 2020.
Medical leaders praised the departing Prof Powis and Sir Chris Whitty said the country was “exceptionally fortunate” that he was in post through the pandemic.
Wes Streeting said: “Steve has provided outstanding clinical leadership to the NHS over the last seven years.
“I would like to thank Steve not only for his pivotal role in the Covid vaccine roll out, but for all his work as medical director.”
NHS CEO RESIGNS OVER LABOUR POWER GRAB
NHS chief executive Amanda Pritchard resigned on February 25 over Labour’s plan to take control of the health service.
Ms Pritchard, 48, will step down at the end of March after three years in post since she was appointed its first female chief in August 2021.
She quit after being told she would lose her powers under Health Secretary Wes Streeting’s plan to strip control away from NHS England.
He will hand more decision-making powers to local health boards and the Department of Health in Whitehall.
There is no plan to replace Ms Pritchard, who was last year paid around £270,000, and a “transition CEO” will be put in place for a “radical reshape” of NHS management.
A source said: “There will be a different setup in future.”
Ms Pritchard said: “It has been an enormous privilege to lead the NHS.
“While it has been a hugely difficult decision for me to stand down, I believe now is the right time.”

And now if he is to race at all it will be in the 2m4f Ryanair after Mullins removed him from the Champion Chase at Thursday’s confirmations stage.
He also pulled last year’s 2-9 Champion Chase flop El Fabiolo and Blood Destiny.
That means the Closutton boss will be relying solely on 11-year-old Energumene in the Wednesday feature.
Jonbon’s position at the head of the market solidified at 4-5 with Paddy Power, who think Nicky Henderson’s star chaser can finally claim the race that has eluded him.
King George runner-up Il Est Francais was confirmed and is 4-1 second-fav but it looks more likely that he is Ryanair-bound.
Former Supreme winner Marine Nationale stood his ground for trainer Barry Connell and he is 9-2 to bag a second Festival win.
Energumene, who is owned by Brighton boss Tony Bloom, sits at 7-1 in the betting with two-time Grade 1 winner Solness.
The Joseph O’Brien-trained chaser has been a different horse this season and made a mockery of rivals on his last two runs.
Solness made all in two big-price wins at Leopardstown over Christmas and at the Dublin Racing Festival.
With Il Est Francais likely to go elsewhere the stage is set for him to bounce out and attempt to make all again.
Mullins tends to leave almost all his horses in all available races until the last minute.
So it could be telling that Gaelic Warrior was scratched at this stage.
It could mean he will only go for the Ryanair – or he could miss Cheltenham altogether.
Mullins has Ryanair market leader Fact To File – but there could be a big reshuffling of the cards should Gaelic Warrior go for that race.
Fact To File has been humbled by Galopin Des Champs twice over the 3m trip.
But connections may want one more crack at him in Friday’s Gold Cup before giving up for good.
That could see Gaelic Warrior assume a much stronger position in the Ryanair betting, where he would be likely to come up against Il Est Francais and Protektorat.

A FASHIONISTA who likes flaunting her figure in skimpy outfits has revealed she is even trolled on Vinted over her appearance.
Scottish life coach Amanda, better known by her online alter ego Dugheed, is no stranger to cosmetic procedures after splashing out on an eye lift, face lift and ‘Turkey teeth’.
The 51-year-old, who does Only Fans and modelling jobs, has an army of loyal followers who can’t get enough of her glam look.
But she still faces criticism from haters who brand her “fake” due to her plastic surgery and hair extensions.
And she’s even targeted on secondhand marketplace Vinted when she’s trying to flog her old clothes.
Amanda, from Glasgow, models all her old outfits in pictures for the listings, with prices ranging from £3 to £40 for mini dresses, crop tops and bodysuits.
Opening up about the hate she’s faced, she said in a short TikTok video: “I’m actually getting trolled on my Vinted. On my Vinted where I’m trying to sell my cast offs that I don’t wear with no tags on them.
“It’s all about £6, people ask me to make it £4. I’m not haggling over £2. If you’re not wanting to buy it for £6, I’ll put it up to £8.
“But the point is I’m actually getting trolled on my Vinted.
“It’s all passive aggressive.
“People are like ‘oh you look nice in that dress, you don’t look too false’.
“Give me a day’s break. Or give yourself a f***ing day’s break.”
Supporters immediately jumped to her defence and labelled the trolls as “jealous”.
One insisted: “People are just jealous of you because you love yourself and you’re beautiful.”
“Shocking it’s jealousy stay amazing”, echoed a second.
Meanwhile, a third wrote: “So sorry too hear this honestly people have to much time on there hands.
“I hate how people think this is acceptable to treat people, everyone has a purpose in life just be kind it costs nothing.”
It comes after Amanda shaved 30 years off her age following a face lift in Turkey.
Many people rushed to compliment her new look and insisted she looks 20-years-old.
One gushed: “You look 20 I really want one can’t wait to see your results, skin looks beautiful. I’m 40 can’t wait for mine.”
Vinted rules to be aware of
IF you fancy clearing out your wardrobe and getting rid of your old stuff on Vinted, you’ll need to consider the new rules that recently came into play.
If people are selling personal items for less than they paid new (which is generally the case for second-hand sales), there is no impact on tax.
However, since January 1, digital platforms, including eBay, Airbnb, Etsy, Amazon and Vinted, must share seller information with HMRC as part of a crackdown.
You’re unlikely to be affected if you only sell a handful of second-hand items online each year – generally, only business sellers trading for profit might need to pay tax.
A tax-free allowance of £1,000 has been in place since 2017 for business sellers trading for profit – the only time that an individual personal item might be taxable is if it sells for more than £6,000 and there is a profit from the sale.
However, firms now have to pass on your data to HMRC if you sell 30 or more items a year or earn over £1,700.
It is part of a wider tax crackdown to help ensure that those who boost their income via side hustles pay up what they owe.
While your data won’t be shared with HMRC if you earn between £1,000 and £1,700, you’ll still need to pay tax as normal.

Someone else chimed in: “Not me jealous to death that you look 25.”
But she was also cruelly dubbed “the other Katie Price” after unveiling her bandaged, post-op face.
Hitting back at the haters, she said: “I don’t copy her or anyone. I wanted this in August and booked for September.
“It’s my life, my money, my body.
“She [Katie Price] has had loads. It’s my first facelift. Let people be who they want to be.”
She added: “Your whole face blows up, it swells, it bruises. My eyes are fine. You can’t get a facelift and still look the same straight after it.
“They’ve pulled my whole face apart. They pulled my face from my knees. But in two weeks it will look absolutely amazing.”
