Wetherspoons to close popular pub in seaside town within weeks as two other sites are sold

WETHERSPOONS is closing a historic pub in weeks after two other branches were sold off.

The pub chain will call last orders at The Quay in Poole, Dorset, on March 23 after buyers stepped in to take on the site.

The boozer, which sits inside a grade II listed building on the seafront, was taken over by Spoons in 1996.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We would like to thank our staff and customers for their loyal service and patronage over the years.

“We would like to wish the new owners the best of luck with their new venture.”

Punters have reacted with devastation after finding out the pub will close for good in a matter of weeks.

Posting online, one said: “Will really miss Spoons on the Quay. One of the best, and the staff are great.”

A second added: “Another pub goes.”

A third, posting a string of crying emojis, chipped in: “One last brekkie needed.”

Wetherspoons had five pubs up for sale as of last October, including The Quay in Poole. Four out of the five were under offer.

Under offer means that a bid is being considered or has been accepted but it is not legally binding.

The other four pubs were: the Ivor Davies in Cardiff, the Sir Daniel Arms in Swindon, the Hain Line in St Ives and the Foot of the Walk in Leith.

However, a spokesperson for Wetherspoons said the Sir Daniel Arms and the Ivor Davies had been taken off the market and remained open.

The Hain Line and the Foot of the Walk have been sold.

We have asked Wetherspoons when these two pubs are shutting and will update this story when we have heard back.

OTHER WETHERSPOONS NEWS

Wetherspoons has launched its annual Spring Beer Festival, with prices starting from £1.69.

The festival runs from March 5 to March 16 offering punters a selection of 30 international ales from across the globe.

The Wallaby, from Australia, is on tap, while customers can buy Estuary Session Ales, a Canadian tipple, or a chocolate porter from Italy.

You can find your nearest Spoons by visiting www.jdwetherspoon.com/pub-search.

How to save money at Wetherspoons

FREE refills - Buy a £1.50 tea, coffee or hot chocolate and you can get free refills. The deal is available all day, every day.

Check a map – Prices can vary from one location the next, even those close to each other.

So if you’re planning a pint at a Spoons, it’s worth popping in nearby pubs to see if you’re settling in at the cheapest.

Choose your day – Each night the pub chain runs certain food theme nights.

For instance, every Thursday night is curry club, where diners can get a main meal and a drink for a set price cheaper than usual.

Pick-up vouchers – Students can often pick up voucher books in their local near universities, which offer discounts on food and drink, so keep your eyes peeled.

Get appy – The Wetherspoons app allows you to order and pay for your drink and food from your table – but you don’t need to be in the pub to use it.

Taking full advantage of this, cheeky customers have used social media to ask their friends and family to order them drinks. The app is free to download on the App Store or Google Play.

Check the date – Every year, Spoons holds its Tax Equality Day to highlight the benefits of a permanently reduced tax bill for the pub industry.

It usually takes place in September, and last year it fell on Thursday, September 14.

As well as its 12-day Real Ale Festival every Autumn, Wetherspoons also holds a Spring Festival.

Spoons also launched a £2.99 breakfast deal last month, with customers able to get a breakfast muffin or small breakfast with soft or hot drink.

There are also veggie options available, which is served between 8am and midday.

Meanwhile tea and toast, which comes with two slices and either jam or marmalade, is just £2.49.

It’s not been all good news for Wetherspoons punters in recent months though.

The pub chain exclusively revealed to The Sun in January it had increased the price of a host of drinks and meal deals by up to 30p.

The chain hiked prices on drinks by 15p while meal deals were bumped up by 30p.

The price rises saw the cost of a Guinness at the London and South Western branch in south west London go from £4.66 to £4.81.

Meanwhile, the price of a Strongbow increased from £3.24 to £3.39.

The average price of a meal deal at Spoons without an alcoholic drink was £4.99 and with a drink was £6.52 before the change.

But the 30p rise means they now cost £5.29 and £6.82, respectively.

Spoons said a number of drinks had not gone up in price, including all draught lagers such as Budweiser, Carling and Coors.

Spoons boss Tim Martin said the pub chain had “tried to remain as competitive as possible” with its pricing.

Watch MAFS’s most awkward moment yet as ‘red flag’ bridesmaid LIES to best man about bride having kids after they marry

MAFS fans have spotted one of the most awkward show moments yet as a ‘red flag’ bridesmaid lied to the best man about whether her sister had kids.

The latest series of the Australian version of the show is sending shockwaves thanks to a slew of dramatic moments and countless twists and turns.

Awhina's sister Cleo from Married at First Sight Australia.

One of the newly matched couples, Adrian and Awhina, seemed to hit it off and have a connection, but Awhina was left nervous about telling her new groom that she has a son.

Awhina has a child from a previous relationship before entering into her MAFS marriage.

And her twin sister wasn’t about to give the game away before the bride had opened up about her son, as she was filmed lying to the best man.

Adrian’s best man, who is also his twin brother, asked Awhina’s bridesmaid Cleo, who is also her twin sister, whether Awhina had kids.

In a very awkward moment, Adrian asked if she had kids, to which she said no.

He went on to ask: “Does your sister?” to which the bridesmaid replied: “I don’t know,” despite knowing full well that her sister has a son.

He asked again: “She got a kid?” to which the bridesmaid again responded: “I don’t know.”

Cleo can be seen talking to the camera, and says: “I panicked,” and then it pans back to the groom who looks confused.

He goes on: “You don’t know?” and Cleo just smiles in response, adding: “I didn’t know what to say.

“I didn’t want to lie and I couldn’t tell the truth. What have I done? But it’s OK – I don’t know is open to interpretation.”

After this, Awhina ends up telling Adrian about her son.

But the pair were left butting heads when Adrian made a comment about not being able to love his new wife’s children.

As the couple discussed the importance of family, they both admitted it was “important” to have a family during their marriage.

Awhina then admitted she wanted to have “more children and build on my already family.”

However, Adrian then appeared uncomfortable as he responded to her comments about her “already family”.

He said: “Having a kid is a special moment in your life.

“I don’t know how I feel about you having experienced that with someone else.

“Like my biggest thing is I sort of want to share that special moment as a first with someone else.”

Awhina looked on shocked as she seemed rattled by the comments he was making.

She turned her head away as Adrian continued to air his thoughts in which he appeared to get his words in a bit of a muddle.

Adrian said: “If I’m being 100% honest, I don’t know if I can love my kids as much as your kids.”

It seemed that when he actually meant to say is that he wasn’t sure if he would be able to love Awhina’s existing children as much as ones that they may go on to have together in the future.

His comments left many MAFS fans insisting he was a red flag as one said: “Red flag. Wouldn’t even get involved with any guy who would say that.”

As another echoed: “I don’t think he should be reproducing at all actually.”

Tommy Mallet reveals he no longer speaks to former pal Pete Wicks after explosive cheating row

TOMMY Mallet revealed he’s no longer in touch with former pal Pete Wicks as he recalled an explosive cheating row from his time on Towie.

The businessman, 32, quit the ITV reality show for good in 2021 having previously stepped away temporarily in 2017.

Appearing on the latest episode of the Down the Caff podcast, Tommy reflected on his days on the show and how Megan McKenna, 32, furiously tried to confront Pete, 37, after a boozy night out.

The pair’s tumultuous relationship was racked with cheating allegations and it eventually came to an end in 2017, though the pair went on to be friends.

Tommy recalled: “There was one time when Megan caught Pete cheating.”

Host Anna, speaking inside East London’s historic E Pellicci’s caff, interjected: “It was a few times not one time, he used to cheat all the time.”

Tommy continued: “She went mental screaming at him; we were still out. I don’t know about Pete but I was still out. I think it was like six in the morning when we’d come home.

“We used to stay in this place and it was like a council estate. I loved it. I felt so at home. It was like, one block there, one block there, one block there.”

He explained how the design of the estate and its communal garden allowed everyone to see when someone arrived.

“I think it was one of the last nights,” Tommy continued. “And we was all out and all the boys thought f***** hell she’s gonna kill me in the morning.

Next thing we know the door bang, we’re all trying to jump off the balcony because we don’t know who it’s for yet, and we’re all like what have we done boys.

“It’s Megan kicking the door in to get to Pete, because it’s come out that he’s cheated on her. And that was live. That was direct. Straight away they got the cameras, and that there was, I reckon, 7am in the morning. That was all live. All that stuff was real.”

Anna asked Tommy if he still sees Pete, to which he replied: “Na.”

Even though he’s made millions as a shoe entrepreneur, Tommy still has a soft spot for the show calling it the “best years of my life”.

Megan and Pete initially started dating around April 2016 and things between them became more serious when she joined Towie.

We exclusively revealed how they were rocked by a sexting scandal in September 2016 that involved Pete’s glamorous ex Jacqui Ryland.

They reunited soon after and were officially back together by December.

However, problems persisted and they eventually called it quits for good less than a year later in October 2017.

Pete later dated his Towie co-star Shelby Tribble.

He and Megan would later reunite on TV for Celebs Go Dating in 2019 where they discussed their romance and break-up.

Down The Caff is available to listen to on all podcast platforms.

Wayne revealed he has had to have another shoulder operation after he fell during a boozy night out years ago.

The former Celebs Go Dating star previously revealed he has no memory of his fall which happened in August 2019, but that it happened on a big night out in Ibiza.

After undergoing surgery in 2021, Wayne has now had another op to heal his shoulder.

Sharing a video from his hospital bed, where he had tubes coming out of his nose, the reality star said: “Second shoulder operation successful.

“I’ve got two now, they call him the Bionic Man, but yeah, it all went well.

“I’m in the beautiful Fortress Clinic in London looking after me.

“Can’t lift my f**king arm up to turn the screen round, s**t, oh, there.

“Yeah I’m gonna have a little Netflix later, it’s quarter to-… it’s ten o’clock and I’ve got my IVs going, all good!

“I will be ready for Ibiza.”

HEARTFELT POST TO BROTHER

Meanwhile, Wayne recently reached out to his brother Gary, 63, who he has been estranged from since 2008.

In the heartfelt post, he insisted that their late parents would want them to be close again.

In a emotional plea to Gary he wrote: “I know for a fact that they will be looking down on us with one wish.

“That would be to become proper brothers again. #lifestooshort.”

Taking a trip down memory lane, Wayne shared a series of pictures including one of an outdoor pool they used to visit.

He wrote: “The universe works in mysterious ways. 55 years ago I used to go to Kenwood Road outdoor pool with my mum Dad and brother Gary every week during the summer holidays.

“This was at this time, I know this because it was only open a few years and sadly closed due to English weather – we didn’t get enough sunny days like Ibiza.

“It doesn’t look too dissimilar to how Ocean does now .. stick a few orange cups in people’s hands, some round beds in the pool,a few umbrellas and you got O beach Leicester.

Wayne continued: “Built on this land by developers were houses – our parents purchased one and Gary and I grew up there until we were adults.

Wayne posted a series of childhood snaps to evoke their memories[/caption]

“The number of the house on Kenwood road was 10, the very same number my bro wore on his England shirt throughout his 80 international games.”

“Gary and I share the most incredible memories in that house, 2 brothers rarely leaving each others side.

“One of my favourite memories of us is both clearing the lounge every Saturday of furniture when mum and dad were out making a goal each end just to play one on one football for hours.

“Ofc then carefully replacing the furniture before coming home. They never did find out ..”

BITTER FALL OUT

Wayne has previously claimed his bitter relationship with Gary dates back as far as 2008, when the footie star was gearing up to wed lingerie model Danielle Boux.

An alleged disastrous introduction in Ibiza left the siblings fuming at each other after Wayne claimed Boux had no interest in getting to know him.

Wayne was invited to their star-studded wedding a year later, but his girlfriend was not invited – leading to him boycotting the ceremony.

Their relationship, Wayne has previously admitted, never recovered.

I’ll be sending my kids to school in their uniform this World Book Day, you can judge but there’s a very good reason

SAT in the middle of her living room floor surrounded by discarded fabric, empty bottles of glue and ribbon Chelsea Leeland took a gulp of wine.

The entire room was a mess, littered with fabric scraps, glue guns, spilled glitter bottles, cardboard, and splattered fabric paint which had even made its way onto the wall.

The mum estimates she’s spent around £600 on costumes in the past[/caption]

It was 1am and the mum of three still had not finished the fairy wings for her nine-year-old daughter Ella’s costume.

The fairy crown was covered in more glue than sequins and her six-year-old son Elson’s bear outfit ‘resembled roadkill and still needed a tail’.

As Chelsea’s then two-month-old Ernie began grumbling in his cot needing a change and the mum, exhausted after spending eight hours making costumes burst into tears.

“I started blubbering like a baby making World Book Day costumes,” Chelsea, from Nottingham says.

“Everyone else was asleep and I was still up trying to make sure my eldest two kids had the perfect outfit.

“I made a vow then and there that my kids were wearing a normal uniform to school and going ‘as themselves’.

“I refuse to fall victim to the competitive mummy madness.”

Chelsea argues that she shouldn’t have to spend money buying costumes either.

“Equally I refuse to spend hundreds on the ‘perfect costume’ or face the judgmental gaze of the yummy mummies who have their child’s costume tailored or specially made,” she says.

“World Book Day is more about posing for an Instagram post than it is reading and I would rather concentrate on my child’s reading than costume making.

Chelsea, 28, in her dislike of the event which schools will celebrate across the globe today.

A survey by Tu Clothing discovered four out of five parents or 81% feel pressured to create a good costume.

While almost a quarter or 21% of parents find last-minute costume preparations more overwhelming than getting their children ready for the first day of school after holidays.

Like Chelsea one in 20 parents are driven to tears over costume preparations.

Meanwhile a Mumsnet study revealed three-quarters of parents think World Book Day is a “hassle” and one in ten parents or 10% felt judged over their choice of outfit.

In the past four years Chelsea admits she has spent more than £600 including a Wednesday Adams dress and special wig, a Wonder Woman outfit, a Princess dress and three outfits one year including Alice in Wonderland on Ella’s costumes since she started reception in 2021.

“She couldn’t decide one year, and I couldn’t face book day tears so I bought three.”

“When Elson started nursery school, the competition intensified and took World Book Day dressing to a whole new level” she says.

Chelsea feels that World Book Day has lost its message and has become overly competitive[/caption]

“Mums were bringing their three-year-old to nursery in designer costumes.

“One mum sent her child as a ‘Gucci toddler model’ and bragged her outfit cost more than a £1,000 . She brought in a catalogue from the store as ‘the book’ showing off the posh outfits.

“The nursery staff were dumbfounded especially as they were doing finger painting and a catalogue isn’t a reading book!.”

“I was gobsmacked.”

Since then, Chelsea says World Book Day and the competition between parents has only intensified.

“I watched hundreds of hours of DIY costume making, determined to create perfect Princess outfits, wizards’ costumes, mini superhero looks and every year I felt like a failure,” she admits.

This year when mums at the school gate started comparing notes on costumes Cheslea said there was more pressure to up the ante.

The day is a bizarre competitive sport for parents to show off their costume making skills

Chelsea Leeland

“They refused to say what they were dressing their child as so that they could do a ‘big reveal’ on social media,” she says.

“Others bragged they would hire a seamstress to make their child’s outfit look ‘just right’,”

“As a mum of three we do not have the income to hire professional help and so for the past four years I have stayed up until well past midnight finishing costumes.

“The day is a bizarre competitive sport for parents to show off their costume making skills.

“The stress of World Book Day has been so overwhelming I have had to say no to costumes altogether, and I feel great about the decision.

“My children will be arriving at school in their uniform today.”

Chelsea says many parents have lost track of the true meaning of the annual event.

“It’s about encouraging reading and celebrating the characters and the books your children love,” she says.

“It is not an opportunity to outdo other mums.”

Chelsea admits that she does feel sorry for her children as a result of her decision.

“This year Ella and Elson went to school wearing their normal uniforms and carrying three books they liked,” she says.

“I do admit that I feel a little guilty about my decision, fellow mums have been left horrified but I know I’ve made the right decision.

“My kids don’t seem too bothered anyway.”

What is World Book Day?

World Book Day was first held in the UK in 1997 with the brilliant intention of encouraging children to discover the pleasure of reading.

There’s a ton of evidence to show that the benefits of books are huge; from improving literacy and language skills to building empathy, concentration and emotional skills.

World Book Day was set up with the intention of changing lives through a love of reading.

Chelsea, who lives with husband Tom, 30, says her mini-costume rebellion has also led to arguments being avoided at home.

She explains: “Previously my kids fought over what they could wear and even when I’d made the outfit there would be complaints it was too scratchy, or they’d changed their mind.”

Chelsea says she knows some mums will label her lazy and selfish, but she does not care and feels no guilt.

“I want my kids to value reading and to actually learn to read, rather than focus on costumes,” she says.

“One of my children has special needs and using picture books has become a keyway for him to communicate his feelings.

“Many households do not have books relying on tablets and computers. I know the value of books for learning and especially their value for children with specific SEN needs.

“I would rather do practical things on world book day rather than waste money on costumes that get worn once and thrown out.”

I would rather do practical things on world book day rather than waste money on costumes

Chelsea Leeland

Chelsea is also encouraging parents wanting to ‘buck’ the World book Day costume to donate to Book Aid International, a charity dedicated to changing lives through books.

“If you would rather donate old books, find a baby or toddler bank using The Baby Bank Alliance website to find a bank for the books there,” she says.

“More people than ever are hit by the cost-of-living crisis and need any help you can offer.

“I also give old books as birthday presents to younger children in my family to my friends’ kids.

“Reading and books are the gift that keeps on providing pages of fun.”

“As for parents who think I am lazy. Throw the book at me. I dare you. I do not care.

“I know someone who will read it and enjoy it.”
