3 days agoBioGraphiComments Off on New Research Reveals the Hidden Dangers of Popular Low-Carb Diets
People sign on to diets for all types of reasons, whether it’s part of a weight loss journey or trying to reduce their risk of heart disease. However, not all dietary changes lead to positive outcomes. Case in point: A new study highlights how popular low-carb diets could increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer.
What’s the connection between low-carb diets and colorectal cancer?
The latest insight comes from a study published this month in the journal Nature Microbiology conducted by scientists at the University of Toronto. The research team set out to better understand the connection between the gut microbiome, diet, and colorectal cancer. Specifically, they examined how three different strains of potentially harmful bacteria were affected by different diets.
"Colorectal cancer has always been thought of as being caused by a number of different factors including diet, gut microbiome, environment, and genetics," Alberto Martin, PhD, a professor of immunology at the University of Toronto's Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the study’s senior author, said in a press release.
To test their hypothesis, the scientists used three groups of mice with the bacterial strains in question. One group was fed a normal diet, while the others were fed either a low-carb diet or a "Western-style" diet high in fats and sugars.
Of all the groups, mice on the low-carb diet developed more colon polyps and were the only ones to develop colorectal cancer during the trial. The research team explained that the low-carb diet coincided with a drop in fiber, which drove up inflammation in the gut and created optimal conditions for the harmful E. coli strain NC101 to grow. This particular strain produces a DNA-damaging toxin known as colibactin.
On a deeper level, mice on the low-carb diet were found to have thinner protective mucus membranes that typically separate microbes in the gut from the colon.
Scientists also noted that mice infected with a mutated strain of NC101 that didn’t create colibactin saw the increased cancer risk drop.
In light of the findings, the scientists want to expand their research to cover Lynch syndrome—a genetic mutation that greatly increases the risk of colorectal and other cancers—and how such microbes affect people with the condition. This includes investigating probiotics that contain other colibactin-producing bacteria that could be particularly problematic for such patients.
The next steps likely involve exploring how addressing the fiber issue could help offset the increased cancer risk.
"We supplemented fiber and saw that it reduced the effects of the low-carb diet," Bhupesh Thakur, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto and lead researcher on the study, said in a press release. "Now we are trying to find out which fiber sources are more beneficial and which are less beneficial."
A new study established a link between low-carb diets and an increased risk of colorectal cancer in mice. Specifically, researchers found that mice who were fed a low-carb diet developed cancerous polyps more than mice fed normal diets.
A lack in fiber that accompanied the low-carb diet potentially contributed to increased inflammation and created ideal conditions for a damaging strain of E. coli, as well as decreased thickness of a protective mucus membrane on the colon.
The research team is now planning on expanding on their findings with additional studies.
"Our study highlights the potential dangers associated with long-term use of a low-carb, low-fiber diet, which is a common weight-reducing diet," Martin said in the press release. "More work is needed, but we hope that it at least raises awareness."

TWO schoolboys had to be rushed to hospital after taking one draw of a vape believed to have been laced with spice.
The lads are understood to have used the vape at a school in Dalkeith, Midlothian, on Tuesday.
AlamyThe boys became unwell after inhaling the vape at a school in Dalkeith[/caption]
But they became violently unwell within minutes, unaware they had just taken the dangerous substance.
It is believed the pair also began slipping in and out of consciousness.
Police and two ambulances were sent to the school and the boys were raced to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
It is understood they had to undergo a range of tests and had their heart rate and blood checked.
Cops have confirmed they are probing the incident.
Spice is the street name for synthetic cannabinoids which is a lab-made drugs which is more harmful than cannabis with much more unpredictable impacts.
It can be made into a liquid which is put into vape pens and smoked.
But it can also be produced into a powder and dissolved before being sprayed onto paper or as a dried plant.
And the harmful drug can have deadly effects.
People who get high on spice can be hit with an inability to move and dizziness. It can also become difficult for them to breathe.
They can also suffer chest pain, heart palpitations or even a seizure.
Spice can also cause users to suffer kidney damage.
It also has extreme mental health impacts, such as psychosis, paranoia and extreme anxiety.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 12.30pm on Tuesday, 4 March, 2025, police were made aware two boys were taken to hospital after inhaling an illegal vape containing an unknown substance in Dalkeith.
“Both boys have since been released and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 11:24 on Tuesday 4 March to attend an incident in Dalkeith.
“We dispatched two ambulances to the scene and two patients were transported to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.”
A Midlothian Council spokesman said: “We can confirm two pupils became unwell at on Tuesday.
“Both pupils were taken to hospital and later released. The school is supporting the pupils and their families while Police Scotland investigate.
“Schools across Midlothian, will be reminding pupils of the dangers of substance misuse and vaping, which are banned across the school estate.
“If families or anyone is concerned about underage vaping or substance abuse then get medical help immediately if the young person is unwell and call Police Scotland.
“For ongoing support, schools liaise with services including the council’s educational psychology team and MYPAS, which offers health and wellbeing support services for young people.
“Parents who are worried about their children’s vaping can also contact MYPAS for information and support directly. They can be contacted by calling 0131 454 0757.”

Freddie flooded his page with luxury snaps, including a topless one aboard a yacht, pap pics, and selfies.
He also posted a cheeky photo on a balcony in Calvin Klein underpants, as well as photos in his swimming gear.
In his bio, Freddie says he’s a “presenter,” and puts his height at 5ft9in.
He writes: “A homosexual,” in the ‘people would describe me as’ section, and tells potential suitors that his star sign is Libra.
The star also says he doesn’t drink or smoke, works out sometimes and has a pet dog.
Freddie’s move over to Tinder comes just weeks after it was revealed that he’d split from his boyfriend after finding out he was “cheating” on holiday.
Speaking exclusively to The Sun, Freddie said: “I’ve recently become single, which I was completely heartbroken.
“I really felt I found my person, it turns out he’s not my knight in shining armour… he’s a p**** dressed in tinfoil.
“My hearts full again, I’ve recovered from it, I’ve healed and I’m back dating which is really nice, I’m so happy.
“It’s too early but I hope I’ll carry on dating on the show.
“We were really happy and content, the fella I was speaking to at the time was travelling in Thailand and I found out while he was out there, he slept with someone.
“It’s not ideal, we were exclusive. If I’m sleeping with someone, you don’t sleep with someone else.
“I respect myself so much.
“The reason I fell for him, was because I was celibate for two-and-a-half years, that’s a long time.”
Despite the split, Freddie said he holds no grudges and has thrown himself back into the dating world after learning a few lessons.

Allow us to present some key stats and facts for each relevant fixture to help inform your decisions…
Brentford v Aston Villa
11th v 10th makes this the very definition of a mid-table clash.
Morgan Rogers, Ollie Watkins and Matty Cash all scored in a first-half blitz against the Bees at Villa Park back in December but the Villains have struggled with European hangovers this season.
Unai Emery’s men have failed to win seven of their eight league games immediately following a Champions League fixture in 2024/25, losing four times.
And so Saturday’s trip to the Gtech has to be considered a potential banana skin with Villa having played against Club Brugge in Belgium on Tuesday night.
Thomas Frank’s side have scored the most home goals in the top flight this campaign while only four teams have earned fewer points on the road than Villa.
Our Prediction: 3-1 to Brentford
GettyVilla have struggled to balance European and league commitments this season[/caption]
Wolves v Everton
Vitor Pereira will be without talisman Matheus Cunha on Saturday afternoon after the Brazilian saw red in the FA Cup fifth round.
The absence of their No10 is likely to hinder the hosts significantly as he is essentially a one-man army in attack.
The Toffees are just one place higher in the table but the gap is now ten points after a run of seven games unbeaten in the league.
Such has been the dramatic improvement since David Moyes’ return to Merseyside, only league-leaders Liverpool have earned more points than Everton from their last six outings.
Our Prediction: 2-0 to Everton
AlamyCunha is a huge miss for Wolves[/caption]
Tottenham v Bournemouth
Spurs will be fully focused on tonight’s game against AZ Alkmaar as the Europa League represents their last hope for a trophy this season.
And with an injury list still too long for Ange Postecoglou’s liking, the North Londoners may not be adequately prepared for the visit of the Cherries on Sunday.
Andoni Iraola’s troops suffered defeats to Wolves and Brighton at the end of February but they still have their sights firmly set on European qualification.
Bournemouth pack a punch going forward with Justin Kluivert and Antoine Semenyo full of confidence of late.
They’ve also earned five more points on the road than Spurs have gained on home soil.
Our Prediction: 3-2 to Bournemouth
ReutersBournemouth rank fourth for total shots this season[/caption]
Manchester United v Arsenal
With several first-choice attackers sidelined, the Gunners failed to score against West Ham or Nottingham Forest in their last two league outings but a seven-goal demolition of PSV in the Champions League has changed the outlook in that regard.
And it’s not as if the Red Devils are impervious in their current state; the only clean sheet in their last 14 league games came against Fulham in late January.
The jury remains out on Ruben Amorim as the performances and results have been just as concerning under his watch as they were during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.
Bruno Fernandes is doing his best to pull the standards up and it was the Portuguese playmaker who scored Man United’s goal at the Emirates in the FA Cup the night his side ultimately won a penalty shootout having played an hour with ten men.
However, Mikel Arteta has generally had the upper hand in this match-up in recent years – his last visit to Old Trafford ended in a 1-0 win courtesy of Leandro Trossard.
No team has allowed their opponents fewer shots on target than Arsenal this season.
Our Prediction: 2-0 to Arsenal
GettyArsenal flexed their muscles in Eindhoven[/caption]
West Ham v Newcastle
The Magpies will naturally have one eye on the Carabao Cup final and with Sven Botman, Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon already unavailable for Wembley – and a minor doubt over Alexander Isak – it would be understandable if Eddie Howe’s troops lacked their usual enthusiasm on Monday night.
As for the hosts, Graham Potter won a few admirers in the capital when he oversaw wins over Arsenal and Leicester at the end of February.
The London Stadium faithful haven’t had all that much cheer this season as only five teams have earned fewer points at home but it feels like a good time to play a depleted Newcastle side that have lost four of their last six league games.

COMMUTERS were hit with early morning travel chaos as 12 popular bus routes have been affected by ongoing industrial action.
On the fifth day of a work-to-rule strike, Transport for Ireland have revealed that the worst hit bus routes are those attached to Donnybrook garage.
GettyThe strike is now in its fifth day[/caption]
GettyCommuters saw early morning travel chaos[/caption]
That means that those worse affected are the 7, 14, 15, and E1 services.
And other impacted routes include the 9, 122, 39, and C1, which serve from Phibsborough.
From the Summerhill garage, the routes 120, 123, 15b and 41 are the worst affected.
Although these twelve are the worst hit, smaller garages and bus routes have also felt the impact of the action.
Transport for Ireland said that the chaos is mostly set to impact in the mornings, although some commuters might experience the same issued in the evening.
The work-to-rule strike by bus workers began on Sunday night and has caused upheaval for public transport users.
Talks about the pay dispute are set to open today between Dublin Bus and union SIPTU.
Dublin Bus Head Office on O’Connell Street will host the talks as Dublin bus pleaded for workers to engage in “meaningful negotiations”.
Meanwhile SIPTU said they do not want to inconvenience people and are hopeful a solution can be going to the ongoing action.
But, they said the industrial action will continue if a solution isn’t found at today’s meeting.
SIPTU said that Dublin Bus were notified of the strike plan two weeks ago and had hoped to further engage with the company.
The worst hit Donnybrook garage south of the city centre is home to flocks of buses.
And it was reported on Sunday when the industrial action began that many of them were not cleaned or fuelled on time which led to massive delays.
In an apology, a Dublin Bus spokesperson said: “Dublin Bus apologises for any delays caused to some customers due to the ongoing work-to-rule industrial action taken by engineering operatives since Sunday, March 2.”
And chairman of the Labour Court Kevin Foley said: “Having regard to all of the circumstances of pay bargaining in the employment, and the detailed submissions of the parties, including the detail of the agreement on self-funding reached in March 2024, the court does not recommend concession of the trade union claim for what is, in effect, a 14.5 per cent pay increase without any concession of productivity or related measures”.

GettyJust last month, Lily claimed to be pregnant[/caption]
The 24-year-old who just last month claimed to be pregnant and cradled her ”bump” while telling social media users ”it’s official”, has now revealed that she has found her “oldest fan”.
Posting on TikTok, the influencer, who has become one of the most controversial women in the UK, shared a short clip and said: “People say OF girls don’t do anything for society.
“But I am wanting to go to a care home and make sure all the old men are taken care of.”
Not only this, but in a follow-up clip, the blonde bombshell, who has banked over £2million and was recently slammed as “bizarre” by another model, filmed herself in what she claimed to be a care home.
Posing alongside an elderly man holding a walking stick, the adult content creator continued: “I found my oldest fan via Facebook.
“When I asked for his address, he actually sent me the address of a care home.”
Lily, who previously opened up on receiving death threats and faces a potential ban from Airbnb after she used a rental for a sexual stunt without informing the homeowner, then panned the camera to show her followers another older gentleman.
To this, she beamed: “So I’m actually here with him and his friends.
“I’m gonna show them a good time.”
The shocking TikTok clip, which was posted on Lily’s official account @lily_phillipss, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly racked up 306,500 views.

Obsessed with sex
But this certainly isn’t the first – and we’re sure it definitely won’t be the last time – that viewers have been left gobsmacked by Lily Phillips.
What is OnlyFans?
OnlyFans is a subscription content service based in London.
As of 2023, it is thought to have more than 220million registered users and over three million content creators.
Sex workers charge monthly fees for access to pictures, videos and more.
While popular for porn, the site isn’t exclusively designed with that in mind – anyone who wants to build up a fan base and charge them for it can set one up.
“Whether you’re uploading tutorials, tips, behind-the-scenes footage or just endless selfies, a lot of your followers would be willing to pay for them,” the company states.
For every subscription that’s sold to a viewer, performers get 80 per cent of the cash while OnlyFans gets the rest.
It isn’t limited to adult content, as it has become popular with physical fitness experts and musicians.
And the Brit sex worker – who didn’t have a boyfriend until she was 17, and lost her virginity just before her 18th birthday – explained that she is “obsessed with sex”.
It was only when studying at Sheffield University, where she couldn’t attend a single lecture due to the Coronavirus pandemic, that she embraced one-night stands and launched her OnlyFans feed.
Lily, who officially joined OnlyFans in 2020 when she was just 19, admitted: “I’ve always been really sexual, just obsessed with sex in comparison to my friends.

“I really enjoyed sex and felt super confident to take things further.”
Cashing in
The self-proclaimed “bubbly and articulate” girl, who posts everything from sneaky peeks to full-blown porn on her hugely lucrative OnlyFans account, earns over six figures a month and employs eight staff – all women.
Former porn star shares advice for Lily Phillips
LILY Phillips is a name many of us now know, thanks to her controversial plan to bed 1,000 men in 24 hours.
The OnlyFans star is hoping to break the world record with the endeavour – a record currently held by adult film star Lisa Sparks, with 919 men.
But adult film star Jasmin St. Claire – who’s most famous for having sex with 300 men in 24 hours for X-rated 1996 film The World’s Biggest G**g Bang II – has issued a word of warning to the 23-year-old to ensure she’s regularly tested for sexually transmitted diseases.
“I get a lot of OnlyFans girls on my podcast … and the one common story is all of the different STD outbreaks in the business,” Jasmin explained.
“Like, I’ve never heard of half this stuff in my life. I’m like, holy s**t. Can a doctor from India cure that?
“Like, seriously, because these are some weird things.”
But when she first started posting on the platform, she had no idea it would turn out to be so profitable.
