Michael Conlan makes honest admission about self-doubt during his long road back to the ring

MICK CONLAN jumped back in the ring after his longest spell away from boxing and wondered, ‘Who’s that?’

But the question wasn’t about his sparring partner that day – but about himself.

The 33-year-old seriously considered quitting the sport after his last loss

After two stoppage defeats in 2023, to Luis Alberto Lopez for the world title and Jordan Gill in his comeback, that looked to be that for the London 2012 bronze medallist.

In his time away, he ran a marathon, worked behind the scenes in boxing and seriously considered calling it quits.

By the time he dipped his toe back in the water with a new trainer, Grant Smith, he found that the habit of a lifetime had deserted him.

Conlan told The Rocky Road podcast: “I’ll be honest, after a year out of the ring, my first seven to ten spars, I was absolutely terrible. I was like, ‘have I forgotten how to box?’

“Grant says, ‘Mick, I understand you’ve not been in the ring so long. Don’t worry about it. It’s gonna come, it’s gonna come’.

“I was like, ‘I don’t know if it’s gonna f***ing come here. What’s happening?’

“It was like my timing, my distance and everything, and I was going, ‘where is my boxing brain going here?’

“But then everything started to come back. I’m like, oh, ‘there I am. There I am. I’m still here. I’m still here. I still know what I’m doing’.

“And everything’s starting to fall into place now, which is good.

The pair have worked together since mid-2024, with Conlan’s comeback set for Friday March 7 against India’s Asad Asif Khan (19-5-1).

Smith, dad of European 140lb champ Dalton, runs a right ship in England’s Steel City and has demanded the Full Monty from the Belfast man as he prepares for his comeback.

Conlan added: “Yeah, I’m basically living here in Sheffield.

“It’s a great gym. Grant is a great coach, but also as a human being, he’s a very good man. I really like it.

“It’s brought the spark back in me of boxing. I’ve been here since end of September, start of October, and I’ve had plenty of time working together now.

“With my last coach Pedro Diaz, we were only together for basically six weeks of training.

“I’m feeling good physically, mentally. I’ve cleared a lot of s*** going on in my personal life, and I’m happy.”

While a happy fighter is a dangerous fighter, Conlan says Smith puts him on edge, too.

The 2015 world amateur champ added: “I respect him, his morals and his stance on boxing, how he looks after his fighters.

“He’s always got the fighters’ best interests at heart. And also, he’s the only one really pulling me up on mistakes.

“And I was like, ‘I know I make these mistakes, so I’m glad you’re pulling me up on them’.

“We spoke about it at the start, he’s not gonna try and change me as a fighter, but he will pull me on the mistakes which I make, and that’s something he’s been doing, and something I’ve been kind of trying to adjust to.

“It makes me more complete. I may be boxing 26 years but I make mistakes, I know that, so he’s been perfect.”

‘HE’S GOT SCARS’

As Conlan tries to win a world title at the third time of asking, Smith’s resilience can be an example too.

While out for a jog in 2006, the coach was mown down by a 56-tonne tram moving at 30mph – and lived to tell the tale.

Conlan added: “He’s got the scars and stuff on his head. The guy was near dead and his family were told that he’d be like a vegetable.

“But he told me while he was going through all this stuff, he could hear everything they were saying.

“He was trying to talk (while in a coma), but obviously was out. And he was saying, ‘I’m all right. I’m all right’.

“He’s a great man. He’s a tough man, but he’s a man who keeps himself to himself and keeps his head down.

“But he’s been through some stuff. It’s crazy. Earphones on and then bang, his thing…

“The story of what he’s been through and what the stuff he’s survived, I suppose, is absolutely mental.

“To be hit by something like that and then be sitting there going, ‘I’m all right’, but you’re actually not.

“You’re sitting there with your shoulders behind your back and your head’s bloody hanging off and you’re going, Jesus Christ, this guy’s going to die.

“I think he checks himself out a week later. You’re going, ‘what the hell is wrong with you?’ I always said there was something wrong with you! And he just laughs.

“But he’s a real good man. I’ll be honest, he’s a real good man, a family man, someone who cares about every single fighter like he cares about his own son. And I love that. I think it’s brilliant.”

SOLE FOCUS

Conlan expects to win his comeback – but the method of victory is not important.

He added: “I’m actually really excited about going out and performing.

“I know that I’m probably levels ahead of my opponent, but he’s coming to win. I’m coming off back-to-back losses.

“He knows how to win. I’ve just got to show my level of boxing, my knowledge and skill set and do what I’ve got to do and get the job done and then move on.

“I probably could be forgiven for fighting somebody with ten losses, 2 wins. I mean, like if I really wanted to, I could have done that.

“But I know that’s not what I need. The only reason I am back is to win world titles.

“It’s not about money. It’s not about anything else. I want to be world champion. And I know I have the ability and the skill set.

“I’ve made the tweaks. I believe I can do it. I’ve watched about a round or two rounds of my opponent. He throws and he’ll leave himself open at times to be hit.

“He’s a lot more active than me. So I need to be switched on.

“He’s cocky. So maybe I’ll give some s*** talking and stuff while I’m in the ring. Who knows?

“ I’ve been I’ve been enjoying that since I was born, giving people a little bit of talk back and stuff. So it’s been good.”

A win, as he says, by any means would mean a good night at the office.

In the main event, his frineds Harlem Eubank and Tyrone McKenna face off. Conlan will be watching through his fingers.

He added: “A win, mate. I’m over a year out. A win. Stoppage would be even better, but I don’t care.

“I need rounds, don’t I? I haven’t been in the ring in a long time. So if I win clearly on points, fine.

“I just got to win and show my own ability. That’s what will constitute a good night – showing my level.”

Conlan freely admits this is the last roll of the dice for him in boxing.

REMINDED OF THE DANGER

And after the death of super-featherweight John Cooney following a Belfast battle last month, it has been brought home once more how dangerous the sport can be.

Now 32, he said: “After my last fight, I was like, ‘f*** this. I don’t know if I want to do this anymore’.

“It’s hard. And, you know, when you lose, when I lose, I’m losing in front of f***ing millions of people.

“People watch us and people will criticize and say things. And it’s hurtful. A hundred per cent it is hurtful and it dents the ego and dents the person.

“But they’re only seeing a glimpse of what it is. If I look back on my last two fights and everything, you know, on my personal life, I probably shouldn’t have been in the ring.

“But you make these decisions in the moment and you’re in that time. If I go back, yes, I would change them, but I can’t go back.

“The last year I was going, do I really want to do this? Running the marathon, to be honest, was one of the reasons I went, no, I need to go back to boxing because I know what I want to achieve.

“It’s the last dance, the last roll of the dice. And I’ve said that numerous times. If I was to lose again, that would be me done. That would be me.

“Listen, boxing is a dangerous game, as we’ve seen in recent times. I don’t really want to talk about that stuff because I am going to fight myself.

“But it is a very dangerous game and people give their lives to this game. I want to be world champion.

“I’ll do everything I can to be world champion. I’m willing to sacrifice so much to be like I’m over here in Sheffield, again, missing more of my kids’ lives.

“But if I don’t do it on this roll of the dice, that’ll be it. You know, I’ve done an awful lot. I’ve achieved an awful lot. I’ve made a lot of money.

“It’s not about that no more. It’s about the goal of becoming world champion. If I can reach that, happy days. If I don’t, then so be it.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

‘Oldest dog in UK’ still going strong at 22-years-old as owner shares secret to her long and healthy life

THE OWNER of the oldest dog in the UK has shared how she keeps her pooch strong and healthy at 22 years old.

Linzi McLean, 29, first laid eyes on the beloved pup in 2005, when her granddad found her as a stray.

She was discovered as a stray in 2005[/caption]

Sasha the Staffy was at the time around three years old, according to vets.

Linzi, from Lancashire, said the secret to the dog’s old age was the love she had received throughout her life.

She said: “The amount of love that I have for her, and that she has for me, I think that’s what has kept her going all this time and kept her heart strong and healthy.”

Recalling how she first came to own Sasha, Linzi said: “He [her granddad] was on the bus on the way home and some girls had found her, she was a stray and she jumped up on to my granddad’s knee.

“They were just going to take her to the RSPCA because they’d found her, so my granddad thought he’d give her a chance.

“If she was an aggressive dog or a badly behaved dog or something, it may have been different.”

School-aged Linzi was elated to receive the dog, who she says is now ‘pretty much part of her’.

She added: “She’s the most loyal dog I’ve ever known, she’s very attached to me.

“I think the main thing that’s kept her going all this time is all the love and care. You give her so much love they want to stay with you all the time, they’re not going to want to leave you.”

The elderly pooch celebrated her 22nd birthday in November – 19 years after she was found.

Unfortunately, Sasha’s record may not be verified by Guinness World Records – last year, the organisation announced it would require microchip data or documentary evidence for all years of a pet’s life in order to verify records.

As Sasha was found as a stray, her owners cannot be 100% certain of her age.

Despite having ‘good mobility’, Sasha now struggles with longer walks. Linzi has now bought a dog pram for her so she can carry on enjoying the great outdoors.

Guinness World Records was contacted for comment.

BBC axe fan-favourite property show that rivalled a huge Netflix hit after just one series on air

THE BBC has axed its property series that directly rivalled a huge Netflix hit.

Bosses at the broadcaster first brought the show to screens nearly two years ago believing it would be the next big reality show.

Property tycoon Daniel McPeake starred in the show as five budding estate agents competed for a New York job[/caption]

However, Crazy Rich Agents has been cancelled after just one series on air, despite being the next best thing to Netflix’s Selling Sunset.

Set in London, it saw five budding estate agents compete for a chance to relocate to New York and work for the prestigious brokerage firm Nest Seekers.

The Sun understands the deeds are signed and there are no plans to bring the format back for a second helping.

Its first series ran for just four episodes and there was appetite for the show to continue.

While Crazy Rich Agents gave an insight into the property market, it also delivered dramatic, tension-filled scenes like Selling Sunset thanks to the eccentric cast.

One star of the show – Daniel McPeake – previously swiped at Crazy Rich Agents being compared to Selling Sunset.

The millionaire tycoon said: “Selling Sunset has a whiff of bullshit – it’s a reality show with fantastic, beautiful people in mini-skirts showing penthouses.

“But there’s nothing underneath the bonnet, nothing to show people how to do it or what’s going on in real estate – it’s a complete farce.

“That’s not the show we wanted to make. This is not LA, this is London. It’s cold, it’s rainy and you’ve got to get the Tube.

“They may be talking about million-pound homes but then go back to sleep on their sister’s sofa – that is the actual reality.”

Best BBC comedies

We look back at some of the best to ever grace the screen.

Fawlty Towers (1975-1979) – Only two series were made of the beloved institution. However, the cultural impact of the series starring John Cleese and Connie Booth spans decades. It follows rude and intolerant Basil Fawlty (Cleese) as he attempts to improve the reputation of his hotel.

Only Fools and Horses (1981-2003) – The show was crowned by some as the best British sitcom of all time by a TV poll in 2004. Seven series were broadcast on BBC until 1991 with additional sporadic Christmas specials airing until 2003. Sir David Jason starred as ambitious market trader Derek “Del Boy” Trotter whilst Nicholas Lyndhurst played his younger half-brother Rodney. Set in working-class Peckham in south-east London, it follows the highs and lows of the lives of the Trotters’, in particular their brazen attempts to get rich.

Blackadder (1983 – 1989) – Four series were made of the iconic show, created by Richard Curtis and Rowan Atkinson. Each series spans a different historical period as anti-hero Edmund Blackadder (Atkinson) tries to better himself in each society. Accompanied by his dogsbody Baldrick (Tony Robinson), trouble always ensues. A TV poll in 2004 found that Blackadder was voted the second-best British sitcom of all time

Absolutely Fabulous (1992 – 2012) – Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley star as failing PR guru Edina ‘Eddie’ Monsoon and alcoholic fashionista Patsy Stone. The pair embark on heavy-drinking sessions and abuse drugs in a desperate attempt to stay ‘hip’. Eddie constantly chases bizarre fads and fails to lose weight whilst her disappointed and neglected daughter Saffy (Julia Sawalha) looks on.

Little Britain (2003 – 2006) – The premise is simple. A sketch show which features different British people from all walks of life that are engaged in all sorts of comical scenarios. Starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams, the pair created iconic pop culture characters. Viewers loved obnoxious council estate teenager Vicky Pollard, morbidly obese scrounger Bubbles Devere, slimming coach Marjorie Dawes, despondent office worker Carol Beer, disgraced politician Sir Norman Fry, of course the iconic Lou and Andy!

The Catherine Tate Show (2004-2015) – A sketch show starring the likes of Catherine Tate. She made iconic characters such as rowdy schoolgirl Lauren Cooper with her line ‘Am I bovvered?’. Other characters featured Bernie the nurse, the aga saga woman, complaining couple Janice and Ray, and of course her infamous ‘Nan’, Joannie Taylor. The last character herself spawned multiple specials and even a movie.

Gavin and Stacey (2007 – Present) The series tells the story of Gavin (Matthew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page). The pair embarked on an online and telephone romance for six months. But when they finally decide to be together properly, their friends and family get in the way. Ruth Jones and James Corden created the beloved show, which has been going for over a decade. The 2019 Christmas special was the most-watched comedy in 17 years and the most-viewed non-sporting event in a decade.

Watch moment world’s fastest AI robot car sets record as it hits nearly 200MPH in incredible speed test at space base

THIS is the incredible moment an AI-driven Maserati nearly hits 200mph, setting a new world record during a stunning speed test.

The new autonomous speed record, set by a robot-controlled car in Florida, U.S, reached a whopping 197.7mph on the Kennedy Space Centre runway.

The car could be seen darting at 197.7mph at Kennedy Space Centre Runway[/caption]

Footage shows the point of view perspective inside the car, which starts cruising at around 20mph before a rapid acceleration.

The streetcar can be seen racing up the runway – as if it’s about to take off – before it starts to gradually get to 197.7mph.

The rocket-like vehicle, painted in a gorgeous green and blue fade with an INDY Autonomous Challenge logo, hit the spectacular achievement without a human in the driver’s seat.

The speedy project, which saw an MC20 Cielo reach the record, was undertaken by experts from Maserati, the Indy Autonomous Challenge, the 1000 Miglia Experience Florida and Politecnico di Milano University.

The experts at Maserati have also attempted this daredevil endeavour before – previously reaching 192.8mph in a driverless IAC AV21 in 2022.

Scientific Director of the project Professor Sergio Matteo Savaresi said the incredible feat “demonstrates the robustness and reliability of the algorithms developed for autonomous driving.”

The convertible MC20 Cielo was specially fitted with Lidar camera and sensor technology.

The same model of this car also managed to complete the famously difficult 1000 Miglia road race in Italy without a driver in 2023.

Paul Mitchell, CEO of Indy Autonomous Challenge and Aidoptation BV said that by using a streetcar rather than a racing vehicle, like in previous record attempts, it helped “transition the learnings of autonomous racing to enable safe, secure, sustainable, high-speed autonomous mobility on highways”.

The software was developed by the PoliMOVE-MSU team, at Milan polytechnic University, but the modifications made to make the car work have not yet been disclosed.

Reaching lightning speeds of almost 200mph, software reaction times have to be razor sharp and incredibly reliable.

The team also explained that if it can create a system that safely navigates highly illegal speeds, it can translate some of the findings to help improve low-speed urban mobility.

Scots takeaway workers who attacked customer with poles after they complained about cold kebab dodge jail

A TAKEAWAY driver and his sons dodged jail after abusing and attacking a grandad with a tow bar over a row about a cold kebab and munchie box.

Sadik Yildirim, 58, has been given community service for hitting Jason Goldie, 50, with a metal pole after he moaned about how long it took to deliver his £35 Just Eat order.

He called in lads Erkan, 31, who rattled the victim’s windows in a bid to goad him out and Cerkez, 26, who brandished the weapon at shocked neighbours who tried to intervene.

The street rammy was filmed by residents and on a doorbell cam with footage played at Dumfries Sheriff Court.

Sheriff Colm Dempsey told the men: “This was a quite outrageous incident.

“You Sadik Yildirim should have just left instead of getting out of the car.

“By getting out the car and engaging with Mr Goldie, you simply exacerbated the situation.

“Your sons then became involved and matters completely spiralled out of control, completely disproportionate to what happened.”

This was a quite outrageous incident

Sheriff Colm Dempsey

Tempers flared when Mr Goldie accused Sadik Yildirim of dropping off food “two hours late and lukewarm from his family’s Dante’ shop in Dumfries.

He marched out and hurled the pitta meal into his motor and fumed: “Here’s your kebab.”

The driver struck him on the back as he walked away with a tow bar he pulled from the boot.

Mr Goldie grabbed a golf club from his home and hit him back before his sons turned up.

Cerkez shouted, swore and grabbed the metal pole and menaced the customer’s wife.

Takeaway boss Erkan banged their windows and tried to goad Mr Goldie to come up, yelling: “I swear I won’t leave here — come out and fight you f****** p****.”

Neighbours can be heard branding the brothers a “pair of bullies” and saying they can’t believe “this is all over a cold kebab” in footage of the row last July.

Sheriff Colm Dempsey

The court heard Cerkez “approached” onlookers with the metal bar “causing them to run inside and lock the doors”.

The trio only left when Mr Goldie’s wife called police after pleading with them to go.

Sadik Yildirim pleaded guilty to assault, while he and his sons admitted threatening and abusive behaviour at a hearing in January.

Sheriff Colm Dempsey

Erkan was also convicted of resisting arrest and Mr Goldie was fined for his part in the bust-up.

Defence lawyer Alasdair Bryce says Sadik believes he was hit first.

He said: “It was a discussion which became heated on the doorstep.

“Mr Goldie threw food in his face as he was sitting in the car.”

Sadik Yildirim was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work within nine months, while his sons were each told to do 90 hours of community service.
