Gangster who was once associate of Kray twins shot himself dead as he ‘could not stand pain from arthritis any longer’
A GANGSTER shot himself in the head because he could no longer stand the crippling pain from arthritis, a court heard.
Courtney, who claimed to be an associate of 1960s gangland criminals the Kray twins, swapped an earlier life of crime for writing books in his later years.

He was found dead by his friend, actor Brendan McGirr, at his home in Plumstead, south-east London, with a gunshot wound.
Southwark Coroner’s Court heard he was also battling prostate cancer and was struggling to get up and down stairs and into a car.
Courtney, 64, took his own life with a Glock 9mm pistol on October 22, 2023.
Senior coroner Dr Julian Morris concluded after a short inquest on Thursday that he took his own life.
Courtney had seemed “happy and chirpy” on October 21 after watching his beloved Charlton beat Reading 4-0 at the Valley with two friends.
They went to the pub before watching England lose to South Africa in the semi final of the rugby World Cup at Camelot Castle.
Detective Sergeant James Robinson earlier told the court about videos Courtney made in the months before his death.
In one of them he spoke about his rheumatoid arthritis and how he was “disguising a lot of pain”, the court heard.
“I’m having to hide the fact that I can’t get up and down the stairs and in and out of the car and I’m not enjoying it at the moment,” he said.
“That’s really it. I don’t want to go waste having a wicked life like I’ve had. Absolutely superb.”
In a 35-second video in the early hours of October 22, 2023, Courtney apologised to the people in his life
He added: “There’s people that are going to be upset. I didn’t mean to hurt you.”
You're Not Alone
EVERY 90 minutes in the UK a life is lost to suicide
It doesn’t discriminate, touching the lives of people in every corner of society – from the homeless and unemployed to builders and doctors, reality stars and footballers.
It’s the biggest killer of people under the age of 35, more deadly than cancer and car crashes.
And men are three times more likely to take their own life than women.
Yet it’s rarely spoken of, a taboo that threatens to continue its deadly rampage unless we all stop and take notice, now.
That is why The Sun launched the You’re Not Alone campaign.
The aim is that by sharing practical advice, raising awareness and breaking down the barriers people face when talking about their mental health, we can all do our bit to help save lives.
Let’s all vow to ask for help when we need it, and listen out for others… You’re Not Alone.
If you, or anyone you know, needs help dealing with mental health problems, the following organisations provide support:

A police investigation into his death concluded that there was “no evidence of third party involvement”, Mr Robinson said.
Courtney had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis in 2015 and osteoarthritis in 2019.
As a filmmaker Courtney had collected up to 70 firearms, which had been decommissioned or fired blanks only, the court heard.
The Bermondsey-born gangster claimed to have been shot, stabbed and had his nose almost bitten off in brushes with his rivals.
He is said to have been the inspiration for Vinnie Jones‘ character Big Chris in the film Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

CBBC legend signs up for Celebrity Big Brother after landing huge five-figure deal
CBBC legend Angellica Bell has signed up to the upcoming series of Celebrity Big Brother.
The Sun can reveal the presenter, 48, will enter the TV house next month after landing a huge deal.

It’s thought Angellica has handed a hefty five-figure deal.
A source said: “Angellica is an excellent booking by ITV.
“She’s one of the most recognizable faces in UK TV thanks to crossing over from children’s TV to primetime shows like The One Show and Martin Lewis.
“Angellica isn’t afraid to speak her mind either. I can’t imagine she will hold back if things kick off in there.”
Bosses will no doubt be hoping she spills all on her untimely exit from The Martin Lewis Show which left fans baffled back in 2023.
The Sun previously revealed she was all set to return to film the 13th series of the hit show before being unceremoniously ditched by uptight bosses.
Producers claimed her decision to appear on Channel 5’s The Gadget Show – freshly rebranded as Shop Smart, Save Money – represented a conflict of interest.
However, insiders insist to The Sun bosses were aware of Angellica’s decision to take part in the show, including name changes of the rival programme, throughout the whole process.
She’s since gone on to co-present on Hits Radio – covering Fleur East who was on maternity leave.
Angellica, who is married to fellow TV presenter Michael Underwood, became a household name back in the early 2000s after presenting CBBC from 2000 to 2006.
She has also presented The One Show and won the 2017 series of Celebrity MasterChef.
The Sun on Sunday previously revealed how Love Island star turned ITV racing pundit Chris Hughes has also landed a huge deal to take part in the show.
Chris, 32, will be joined by sporting legend Daley Thompson, 66.
The decathlon gold medalist is still considered by many to be Britain’s greatest athlete.

Olivia Attwood reveal her dogs have their own STAFF but won’t give more details amid security fears
OLIVIA Attwood has joked her dogs have their own STAFF.
The proud dog mum owns a Carpathian/German Shepherd mix Lola and a Rottweiler called Stitch with husband Bradley Dack.

In a Q&A with fans on Instagram, one follower asked: “Who looks after your dogs while you work so much? Love you btw without being weird.”
Olivia wrote back: “The girls basically have their own staff at this point – and they are with us a lot more than you would think.
“But for security reasons there are a few details of my life I have to keep.”
Olivia this week claimed she barely has time to eat because of her jam-packed schedule.
She explained that she has help taking care of her dogs who often join her at work.
Olivia – best known for her stint on Love Island – often speaks out in favour of adopting dogs in the UK or abroad.
During the coronavirus lockdown, an increased interest in people wanting puppies led to unauthorised breeders selling sick dogs to make money.
Fellow Love Islanders Molly and Tommy were caught up in it – after their pet dog Mr Chi from Russia died days after arriving in the UK.
Olivia even hit out at Towie favourite Joey Essex who shared a snap of his Dobermann pup with pointed ears, augmented using cruel ear cropping – which sees dog ears partially removed.
“Just a reminder,” she posted, alongside a snap of what dogs look like before and after cropping, calling it “illegal and painful”.
“In most cases, it’s done without pain relief. Can you actually imagine – all for a fashion statement,” she continued.
Olivia then shared snaps of her two dogs, including “one guard dog”, both of which she stressed had their “ears intact”.
