Plymouth’s hunt to replace axed Wayne Rooney continues as former Premier League manager walks away from talks

PLYMOUTH ARGYLE’S search to replace Wayne Rooney continues after they were rejected by a former Premier League boss, according to reports.

The Manchester United and England legend was axed on New Year’s Eve with the club bottom of the Championship.

Argyle remain in the hunt for a new manager and they approached ex-Huddersfield and Norwich boss David Wagner about the vacancy earlier this week.

But The Express report that he has walked away from talks as he is not interested in the job.

Wagner got Huddersfield promoted to the Premier League and then kept them in the top-flight for one season before leaving the Terriers six years ago.

After spells at Schalke and Young Boys, the German spent 18 months with Norwich.

But the 53-year-old was dismissed after they crashed out in the play-offs to Leeds back in May.

Until Argyle find a new manager, Kevin Nancekivell and Joe Edwards will remain in temporary charge.

Steven Schumacher is the favourite to take over at Home Park and complete a sensational return to the Pilgrims.

The 40-year-old was surprisingly axed by Stoke back in September after quitting Argyle to move to the Potters just over a year ago.

FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS

Schumacher was a hugely popular figure in Devon after he got the club promoted to the Championship, winning the League One title in 2023.

But he faces a tough job trying to keep them in the division should he take the job.

Argyle are bottom of the table, remain three points from safety and are winless in their last 11 games.

Rooney guided the club to just four victories from 23 games in the league during his tenure.

And they conceded more goals (51) and scored the fewest (22) in the division at his time of departure.

Dublin weather today: Temps plunge to -5C as schools confirm late opening & Met Eireann warn of -6C blast in HOURS

DUBLIN can expect another round of bitter weather today, with a Status Orange warning in place now after temperatures plunged to a bone-chilling -5C last night.

Temperatures are expected to plunge as low as -6C in Dublin tonight as Met Eireann warned highs will be “really struggling” to push over 2C to 5C today.

The Status Orange low temperature and ice weather warning came into place last night for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Munster and Connacht from 6pm, lasting until 11am this morning.

While a more mild day than we’ve seen across the country this week for the capital, temperatures will struggle to reach between 2C and 5C.

This morning is another cold one with widespread frost and ice lingering, and only a scattering of cloud meaning the cold air is going nowhere.

Tonight will also see another bitterly cold evening hit as frost sets in early.

Met Eireann is preparing Dubs for the worst, as temperatures are expected to remain between -6C and -2C, with frost, ice and black ice expected.

As conditions remain harsh across the city and county, councils are reminding road users to be alert.

South Dublin County Council urged locals to make themselves aware of local salt bin locations and gritting routes.

The council, who have seven gritting trucks and seven snow ploughs, revealed the information is available on their website.

The bone-chilling conditions in store have forced schools in several counties to keep their doors shut tomorrow or opt for a delayed opening, including a number in Dublin.

In Dublin, schools in several areas including Sutton, Baldoyle, Swords and Donabate will open later than usual, around 11am as the orange weather warning expires.

St. Oliver Plunkett school in Malahide will open at 11am, with Scoil Isa following at 11.10am.

Our Lady of Mercy College Beaumont will also see a delayed opening of 11am, St. Bernadette’s Senior School, Quarryvale will also open at 11am.

St Martin de Porres NS, Dublin 24 will open at 9.50am and St Bernadette’s JNS, Quarryvale, will open at 10.30am.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK

Tomorrow is looking to be a cloudier, but slightly warmer day for Dublin as outbreaks of light rain and most dry conditions will take hold.

Highest temperatures are looking to hit between 2C and 5C during the day, with an overcast night bringing those temperatures down to 0C to 4C.

This weekend will remain cloudy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle gradually clearing away, with Saturday temperatures rising to 4C to 8C.

And looking towards conditions in Dublin next week, Met Eireann warned: “Current indications are for high pressure to develop to the southeast of the country but a few frontal systems will clip western and northern counties too.

“Overall rather mixed with cloud and drizzle along Atlantic coastal fringes but drier and perhaps sunnier in the southeast.”

COLDEST TEMPS EVER RECORDED IN IRELAND

AS freezing conditions and low temperatures hit Ireland, the country is set to bask in ice, snow and sleet.

With temperatures setting into minus figures, it won’t beat the coldest days ever recorded on the island.

The coldest areas in Ireland are usually found inland, with coastal areas benefiting from sea breezes to keep warmer.

Mullingar, Co Westmeath has the lowest average temperature at 9.3C yearly, but it is not the coldest ever recorded area.

Here are the areas in the country that have recorded the lowest ever temperatures:

  • Co Sligo: On January 16, 1881, –19.1C was recorded at Markree Castle in Collooney.
  • Co Kildare: On January 2, 1979, -18.8C was recorded in Lullymore.
  • Co Longford: On February 7, 1895, -17.8C was recorded in Mostrim while the area also saw the coldest July temperature ever at -0.3C on July 8, 1889.
  • Co Sligo: Again at Markree Castle, -17.2C was recorded on March 3, 1947, -8.3C on October 31, 1926 and -7.7C on April 15, 1892.
  • Co Donegal: The coldest ever temperature in May on record was detected in Glenties at -5.6C.
  • Co Offaly: On June 1, 1962, Clonsast saw temperatures drop to -3.3C.
  • Co Wicklow: The coldest ever day in August was in Rathdrum with temperatures dropping to -2.7C on August 30, 1964.
  • Co Wexford: On November 29, 2010, Clonroche saw temperatures drop to -11.5C.
  • Co Mayo: Also in 2010, temperatures in Straide dropped to -17.5C on Christmas Day.

Yesterday, concerns had been raised over the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition taking place in the RDS this week.

There were fears that not all 225 schools set to attend event would be able to travel to the competition due to the cold snap, with organisers making necessary exceptions to accommodate pupils.

Head of the exhibition Mari Cahalane told RTE News: “Normally we ask for all of the students to be booked in by 12pm on the Wednesday, just before the opening ceremony.

And in latest updates from event organisers it appears all schools are on track to make the competition after local communities rallied together to clear roads.

Ms Cahalane said: “We’ve heard of a school that had tractors out ploughing the roads to make sure the students would be here.

“It’s a lovely thing that communities are getting behind this because the students have put so much work in to be here.”

Marcus Rashford ‘wanted by ambitious Como’ with former team-mates set to convince him to join them in Italy

MARCUS RASHFORD is reportedly wanted by Serie A side Como.

The Italian outfit have been ambitious in the transfer market since their promotion out of Serie B.

Raphaël Varane is an ambassador at the club[/caption] Marcus Rashford's 2024-25 Man United stats: 15 games, 15 chances created, 4 goals, 1 assist, 9 shots on target, 312 passes, 8 fouls.

In the summer transfer window, Como signed the likes of Andrea Belotti and Nico Paz.

The club also added free agents such as Spanish stars Pepe Reina, Alberto Moreno and Sergi Roberto.

Reports in Italy have now claimed they have set their sights on Rashford.

The club could rival other interested parties such as AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund.

Di Marzio have claimed that Como will have “no problem” with the deal for Rashford from an “economic point of view”.

Como will also be boosted with Rashford’s former team-mates Raphael Varane and Dele Alli at the club.

Varane is working as an ambassador after retiring from football during the season due to injury.

While Alli, who played with Rashford with England, is training with the Lombardi side.

It is suggested that the pair could try and convince the Red Devils star to pick Como this month.

Rashford’s brother and agent Dwaine was in Milan this week speaking to AC Milan over a potential deal.

Why Rashford joining Arsenal is perfect fit

By Martin Lipton

MARCUS RASHFORD is at a crossroads.

But now the England star has to make the biggest choice he has ever faced – does he care about cash, or about his career?

Rashford’s shock admission that he is “ready for a new challenge” after some two decades under the Manchester United umbrella has altered the dynamic around his future.

That Rashford might not fit the blueprint of Ruben Amorim – who has now responded to Rashford’s comments – was not exactly a surprise.

The Portuguese coach prefers a 3-4-3 formation but appears to have settled on Rasmus Hojlund as his starting central striker and wants two “narrow” inside forwards, with the width coming from the wing-backs.

Rashford has always wanted to play through the middle but is often at his best exploiting spaces out wide – and that skillset does not necessarily suit the way Amorim wants to play.

Even so, going public with his evident dissatisfaction at being bombed entirely from the squad for the Manchester derby was a major move, even if he vowed there would be “no hard feelings” if he does leave his boyhood club.

In truth, Rashford has been leaving United almost from the moment he signed that new £325,000 per week contract in 2023.

Something was broken in his connection to the club. His form dropped, his threat dissipated, his issues with the hierarchy deepened.

When Erik ten Hag dropped him for hosting a birthday party after a derby defeat, and he later pulled a sickie to miss the FA Cup game with Newport, it felt even then that the writing was on the wall.

The facts suggest the love affair has ended. After scoring 30 in all competitions to earn that new deal, he has scored just 15 in the 18 months since it was signed.

Amorim’s arrival seems merely to have accelerated what was increasingly inevitable.

Now, though, it is up to Rashford to determine what his future will bring.

If it is only about the money, then his options might be somewhat limited.

It is hard to see a Prem rival coughing up the same £16.9m annual salary – although Rashford’s comments have probably knocked £20m-plus off any transfer fee.

But Real Madrid have their fill of big-money strikers and Barcelona’s budget remains restricted by LaLiga financial controls.

In Europe, then, that probably leaves PSG – but a move to a one-club league.

Or, in the wider world, he could follow the likes of Ivan Toney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Roberto Firmino and Co and head to the Saudi desert.

Lucrative, yep. Certainly a different environment – and that may be exactly what Rashford both wants and needs. But the football? Not in a million years.

What Rashford needs, above all, is to be able to play for trophies and showcase his talents.

There is no better stage than the Premier League – which has far more global eyeballs on it than any other domestic competition.

And in that Premier League there is one club crying out for a goalscoring No 9, especially if he can also play down the left channel to balance out the side and widen its threat.

Rashford has always been more Longsight than London.

Yet Arsenal, and Mikel Arteta, might be the perfect fit.

The Gunners’ lack of a proper scorer is one of the major factors many fans feel has hurt their title challenge this year.

Gabriel Jesus has never been a natural finisher, while Kai Havertz is still a converted midfielder.

And while the link-up between Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka makes their right flank deadly, faith in Gabriel Martinelli on the left is waning.

There have not been too many who succeeded at Arsenal after leaving United – although Danny Welbeck was not a flop.

Rashford has all the attributes to change that history, if he can reproduce what everybody knows is inside him.

And by breaking free, giving himself the chance to start all over, Rashford can make a point to Amorim that will resonate for a very long time.

However, the deal could hit two stumbling blocks as the Rossoneri need to sell Noah Okafor and need Man United to pay half of the forward’s wages.

Rashford is on a whopping £325,000-per-week which means the club would still need to pay £162,500 a week while he plays with AC Milan.

Como are currently sitting 16th in Italy’s top-flight but have only won four of their first 18 matches.

Cesc Fabregas’ side does have a game in hand over its rivals and winning that could lift the club to at least 12th.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be plotting a shock loan move.

German giants Borussia Dortmund are also keen on him and are willing to battle for his signature.
