However, now shoppers have been left totally baffled after spotting a new feature at Tesco.

According to the mega supermarket – which axed a popular Clubcard feature today, March 7th, 2025 – they’re currently trialling new trolley and baskets scales to identify unscanned or overscanned items.
This, Tesco explained, will help alert customers to any products they may have missed or scanned incorrectly.
The feature, which is being tested with the Scan As You Shop checkouts in Gateshead Trinity Square Extra, near Newcastle upon Tyne, is also said to reduce the number of manual service checks done by the floor staff.
The supermarket believes that the addition could also slash the queuing times and streamline the checkout experience for those doing their shopping at Tesco.
The way the feature works is Scan As You Shop customers walk through airport-style gates that will weigh the shopping basket or trolley – before they proceed to pay.
However, some social media users have already pointed out to a potential flaw within the system – whether the scales would be sensitive to pick up lighter items, like greeting cards and plastic bags.
Furious parents have also noted that this may not work with children who are sitting in the trolley.
One Redditor complained: ”I have a little baby that sits in the baby seat, would we be expected to take them out which will wake them up so they’re gonna cry?
”Or you’ve been shopping elsewhere and you’ve got the items you bought elsewhere bagged up under all the Tesco shopping?
”Or been to the gym and got your gym bag in there. Or a handbag. Literally anything. This seems like a good idea until you think about it for more than 5 seconds,” the person went on in the Reddit thread.
The mega retailer has already faced backlash for the trialled feature online, with furious customers comparing the gates to ”border control”.
One dissatisfied shopper shared their fury, writing: ”Come for the shopping, stay for the full body scan!’ Wtf.”
Another criticised the supermarket, commenting: ”Am I at border control or f***ing Tesco?”
”Are those the gates for the new Heathrow runway?” someone else was totally baffled.
Insider tip from a Tesco employee
A Tesco employee has revealed a surprising secret about the self-scan trolleys.
According to the worker, random checks on customers using these trolleys are not entirely random.
The checks are actually triggered by a specific customer habit.
If you frequently pick up and put down items without scanning them, you’re more likely to be selected for a check.
This is due to the system detecting suspicious behaviour, which could indicate potential theft.
So, to avoid delays, it’s best to scan items immediately after placing them in your trolley.
”This is all going too far now. Can we not go back to mainly staffed tills and just have the odd couple self service for 10 items or less?” a fourth thought.
Although the gates are currently being tested at just one location, many thought it was highly unlikely the feature will become a norm for every Tesco.
The person, who claimed to be a resident of the area, said: ” I doubt these will properly take off.
”Apparently they’re quite successful in south Korea but this shop is the first one in the UK to get them. (I know cause this is my local).
”’Not unrelated but the shop is also going through 1.5 million pound refit so I don’t they’re cheap enough to just stick them in every shop. I figure this is mostly a trial run.
”And they’ve only just gone online this week so I’m assuming there’s going to be quite a few teething issues.”
There’s no shortage of robot vacuums out there, but Dreame has been standing out since 2017, making smarter and better models every year.
Its latest, the X50 Ultra Complete, debuted at CES 2025 with some seriously impressive upgrades.
This thing promises to handle just about anything, with extendable legs to help it climb over thresholds and a retractable laser tower to let it squeeze under low furniture.
The self-cleaning station takes things even further, washing the mop pads with hot water, drying them with hot air, and emptying the robot’s dustbin, so there’s less for you to do.
All that doesn’t come cheap, but if you’re after a vacuum that (almost) does it all, this one might just be worth it.
I’ve put it to work to see if it really lives up to the price tag.

How I tested:
As a first-time robot vacuum owner, I was excited to put the Dreame X50 Ultra Complete to the test.
With its improved agility and ability to climb small thresholds, I was keen to see how it performed in real life.
Since my kitchen and bathroom are the only tiled areas in the house, I set up the base station there to see how well it tackled the constant crumbs and spills.
For three weeks, I let it roam the kitchen and living room, keeping track of how often it needed emptying, how well it cleaned, and its overall impact in a busy home.

First impressions
I was genuinely excited for the Dreame X50 Ultra to arrive, as robot vacuums have been on my radar for a while, but this was my first round testing one.
Right out of the box, I could tell the X50 Ultra is a slick, premium piece of tech.
The matte white body and clean edges give it a modern, polished feel that sets it apart from other clunkier robot vacuums.
The package includes everything you could need: spare parts, accessories, and extras that make you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth.
You get plenty for your money, with replacement parts included
Along with the base station and robot, I got 10 mop discs, extra dust brushes, replacement rollers, three dust bags, filters, and even floor cleaning fluid and a maintenance brush.
Considering the price, it’s great knowing I won’t have to spend more on parts anytime soon.
One thing to note is the size of the base station; it’s pretty bulky and requires some space.
I had to figure out where to place it, and I ended up putting it in a corner of the kitchen.
It’s out of the way, and I get to take advantage of the mopping function since that area is tiled.
But, if you’re in a smaller space, be aware that this unit takes up a fair amount of room.
I did run into a few setup hiccups at first, as I got the unit before its February launch, but once those were sorted, it was smooth sailing.
The process was simple: download the Dreame app, scan the QR code on the robot, connect it to Wi-Fi, and you’re ready to start mapping rooms and putting the vac to work.
It maps rooms with impressive accuracy
The Dreame took less than five minutes to scan and map my kitchen, and the map is incredibly accurate.
I was able to easily adjust it, add no-go zones, and mark areas with impassable thresholds to avoid any falls.
On its first clean, I used the CleanGenius mode, which uses AI to map out the room and clean it efficiently.
In just nine minutes, it had done a great job on my average-sized kitchen.
But what stood out was how it automatically detected the floor mats by the door and in the kitchen, vacuuming those areas first, then mopping the tiles around them without me needing to do anything.
After every cleaning cycle, the robot returns to empty its dustbin in its self-emptying base station.
It was louder than expected, so if you’re planning to run it late at night, that’s something to keep in mind.
That said, the noise only lasts a couple of minutes, so it’s not a huge issue.
The Pro-Leap feature can’t quite manage taller thresholds
One downside, which I had anticipated, is the Pro-Leap feature for my home.
The X50 Ultra can raise its wheels to navigate small thresholds up to 6cm high, which will be useful in some homes.
Unfortunately, the 12cm steps in my house were too high for this feature to make a difference.
It did handle transitions well, like moving from tiled floors in the bathroom to the carpeted hallway, but it didn’t need the Pro-Leap capability to do so.
Does it deliver?
I may not have used the Dreame X50 Ultra for all its features, but I still ended up loving it.
To be honest, it’s kind of cute in its own way, and now it feels like part of the family, even if it’s a bit overworked and underpaid.
I have a large, carpeted, open-plan living room and dining area, and while the X50 Ultra can’t handle steps, you can still move it between different levels of the house.
To manage it, you need to create a Multi-Floor map, and it will clean each room and return to its starting point when done.
Once finished, all I had to do was take it back to its base station to empty the dustbin and recharge.
In terms of cleaning, it takes about 40 minutes to do my living room, which is longer than a quick run with a handheld vacuum.
You’ll get those satisfying carpet lines when it’s done vacuuming
But honestly, it does a much better job, and you’re able to customise the cleaning power, so I set it to max to take full advantage of its impressive 20,000 Pa suction.
It cleans in an S-pattern, starting with the edges and then working up and down the room, leaving those satisfying vacuum lines you usually only see from professional cleaners.
On my hard floors, it did a better job of picking up larger specs, and the crumb-ridden kitchen floor, which up until now was the bane of my existence, is now a thing of the past.
It manages it without using much water, and the floor dries in under 10 minutes, unlike when you’re waiting forever after a traditional mop.

The whole setup gives off a real ‘home of the future’ vibe, especially with the voice control feature, which I initially linked up to my Echo Dot.
However, I did run into some issues getting Alexa to understand a few commands, which was a bit frustrating.
So, I ended up asking the Dreame robot directly instead.
Just say ‘Ok Dreame’, and it turns toward you, responding with ‘I’m here’ before getting to work.
Then you can tell it to get to work, and it does its thing without complaint.
Will it replace your handheld vacuum?
The big question: Is a £1,400 robot vacuum really a replacement for your trusty handheld vacuum?
The short answer is not exactly.
While the X50 Ultra does a solid job, it’s not quite up to the task of replacing a deep clean, and it struggles to reach right into corners.
That said, my approach is to do one big clean myself, then let the robot take over for routine maintenance in between.
Given how well it keeps things tidy, I’d happily let it do the work for a few weeks before I pull out the mop and vacuum again.
So, if you’re looking for convenience, it’s worth the investment.
How much is Dreame?
At £1,299 (down from £1,399 as part of an introductory offer), the Dreame X50 Ultra Complete is definitely on the pricey side.
But, as they say, you get what you pay for.
With features like an auto self-emptying station, Pro-Leap technology, and a retractable laser, it brings a lot of smart tech to the table – well, floor, actually.
Of course, there are cheaper options, like other Dreame models in the L10 series, which start at £549.
But with the lower price comes some trade-offs, like less powerful suction and none of the next-gen features that come with this flagship model.
Where to buy
As it stands, the two places you can pick up the newest Dreame model are the brand’s official website and through the Dreame storefront on Amazon.
If you choose to order through Dreame itself, you’ll get free next-day shipping via DPD on orders over £99, which is safe to say the X50 Ultra is.
Likewise, Amazon offers the Dreame with next-day Prime delivery for its members, but it’s down to £1,199, so you can bag an extra saving.
Alternatives
There are plenty of cheaper robot vacuums on the market
Choosing the right robot vacuum cleaner can feel like a minefield at times, but there are solid alternatives.
The iRobot Roomba Combo 10 Max is one of the top picks around, practically becoming synonymous with the category.
Retailing for £1,399, you can bag it on Amazon for just £1,349; that’s a typical price tag for a self-emptying setup.
But you don’t have to fork out thousands for a decent model, especially if you’re not quite ready to part ways with your trusty corded vacuum.
Eufy is another top contender, with the Eufy X10 Pro Omni going for £799, which still handles the vacuuming and mopping.
There are also great options that cover the basics without costing a fortune, like the Roborock Q5 Pro on sale for as low as £199.99.
Dreame X50 Ultra Complete: The verdict
The Dreame X50 Ultra is a premium piece of kit that’s perfect for everyday maintenance, though it’s not a full replacement for a handheld vacuum.
It does a solid job at routine cleaning, thanks to features like its 20,000 Pa suction, AI-powered cleaning, and a self-emptying base.
It will struggle with thresholds over 6cm, but it does a great job on carpets and tiles.
The bulky base station and voice control issues are minor downsides, but overall, the X50 Ultra offers value for money.
If you’re looking for automated cleaning and a smart upgrade to your routine, it’s well worth the investment.

The seaside venue has transformed in recent years from being a “wet-only” inn into a bustling gastropub.
Natalie and Andrew Hennessy took over operations of the Shepherd Neame-owned pub in 2018, and it quickly became popular within the community.
Seizing the opportunity to expand, the pair managed to grab The White Horse in Boughton-under-Blean for a brief spell and also opened a wood-fire kitchen in the town last summer.
Despite this growth, the couple had to let go of The East Kent this year.
They had already planned to depart the pub but were forced to make the decision even earlier due to “unexpected breakdowns”.
A statement by the pair on Facebook said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of The East Kent pub.
“We had decided this would be our last year of trade however we have closed the doors earlier due to a combination of unexpected breakdowns.
“We would like to sincerely thank our incredible team, loyal customers, and the wider community for the years of support.”
The pair also laid praise on the loyal punters who they had served over the years.
They said: “It has been a privilege to serve you all, and we’re grateful for the memories made at The East Kent.
“Thank you again for everything, you’ve all made The East Kent more than just a pub you’ve made it part of the community.”
The venue has said it has reached out to those with further bookings as well as those with deposits and vouchers.
Fans were quick to share their sadness under the post.
One said: “Gutted. Loved this pub.
“This had the best beer garden in Whitstable.”
More than 400 pubs closed in 2024 – as number of UK boozers reaches all-time low
MORE than 400 pubs called last orders last year as the total number of boozers reached an all-time low.
Some 412 in England and Wales — around 34 a month — shut and were demolished or converted into homes, offices and nurseries.
That was a rise of 6.7 per cent compared to the previous year and the sharpest fall in numbers since 2021, when 444 pubs closed their doors.
The overall number of boozers in England and Wales, including those vacant and offered to let, fell to a low of 38,989 according to Valuation Office Agency statistics.
Four years ago, the hospitality sector was hit by Covid lockdowns and soaring energy prices.
In 2024, rising costs and cautious spending also hit the sector.
The British Beer and Pub Association reckons pubs face an additional £71 million bill from April when employer National Insurance Contributions rise to 15 per cent.
Another added: “So sad to hear this. Wish you well for the future.
“Thank you for all you did for us a few years ago. Still appreciate it.”
A third said: “Sorry to see this.
“Wishing you all best for the future. A sad loss for the town.”
Others heavily praised the food at the venue, and were equally sad to see it go.

Megan detailed the terrifying ordeal with her fans on social media on Friday afternoon.
The reality star posted a photo of Landon in a cot in hospital.
Megan wrote: “One thing I’m learning about being a mum, always trust your gut.
“I was told to stop Landon’s Omeprazole by his pediatrician. This made me feel really uncomfortable and I begged to get him on it in the first place due to him having terrible reflux for six weeks.
“He finally has got himself to a good place after being on a baby Omep for four months.
“I begged to get more but was told he needs to stop now.
“Because I was told to stop when I really didn’t want to, I’m now sitting on a baby ward after being in A&E all night because Landon has got gradually worse throwing up so much, it was scary.”
“Screaming in pain and retching till his face turned red and had now become dehydrated from all the vomiting.”
The frightened mum continued: “The pediatrician at the hospital I’m in now is very confused at why he was told to stop taking it and should be on it for at least six months.
“After last night he is being put straight back on it and has just had his first dose.
“He was kept in overnight to be monitored and to have fluids put back into his body.”
She went on to say: “Thankfully Landon’s back to his happy self again.
“He even woke up with a smile.
“But we’re now back on the Omeprazole journey. Thank you to all the nurses and doctors that looked after Landon on the Dolphin Ward at Princes Alexlndra Hospital.
“I really appreciate everything you have done for me and Landon.”

VIRGIN Media customers will find two extra channels on their boxes from today for free.
The firm has been adding more streamed channels to the service since last year, with more than 30 already available to watch.

The duo are available on Virgin TV 360, Stream and V6 boxes.
Wonder is the first, where viewers can find programmes on groundbreaking engineering, innovative technology, and scientific exploration.

Wonder can be found on channel number 238 while Red Bull TV sits at number 556.
Both channels are now visible in Virgin Media’s TV guide, as well as searchable via voice control.
Only last month, customers gained two more channels devoted to Eggheads and Hell’s Kitchen respectively.
Other streamed channels on boxes since last year include Tipping Point and Deal or No Deal.

Stream swapping – the easy way to cut your bills?

It’s no secret that TV streaming apps are costing more and more.
Not only are prices shooting up, but we find ourselves asked to pay for an increasing number of apps and services.
And when you combine those TV bills with your music streaming, mobile and internet fees, and every other drain on your bank account, it all starts to get a bit much.
One of the best ways to cut your TV bills is to simply cancel all of your streaming subscriptions and only sign up to one per month.
Pick an app like Netflix, Disney+, or Apple TV+ and smash through all of the content you want to watch on that app.
Then the next month, swap to something else.

It’s an easy way to avoid forking out for a rolling library of streaming apps with more content than you could possibly watch.
Also don’t forget that paid-for streaming isn’t the only game in town.
There are loads of apps that don’t cost a penny to enjoy, and downloading a few will unlock thousands of live TV channels plus tens of thousands of movies and shows.

The young lad, from Stockwell, died at the scene with cops quickly launching a murder probe.
A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder in Croydon today.

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Lee said: “Our detectives are working hard to piece together the events of Tuesday afternoon and identify those responsible for killing Lathaniel.
“We continue to appeal for anyone with information about Lathaniel’s murder to please come forward and speak to us.”
The youngster, who grew up on the Studley Estate, was described by those who knew him as a “sweet guy” and “very bright at school”.
Residents paid tribute to the Manchester United fan and around 18 bouquets of flowers were left at the scene.
