My fiancée broke up with me after her mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer

A woman with cancer smiles while hugging her daughter.
Hopeful smiling woman battling with cancer hugging daughter

DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER my fiancée’s mother was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer, I was so supportive when she wanted her to move in with us.

They were so close, so I knew how hard it was for her, and I tried to do everything I could to help.

However, as her mum’s condition deteriorated, the more distant she became, and eventually she decided to end things with me.

I begged her to reconsider, but she told me that she simply had no time for me anymore and that it was unfair of her to keep the relationship going any longer.

Knowing how much she was going through, I decided to move into the spare room in case she needed me.

It’s been confusing as fell back into bed together a couple of times.

Now I’m at a loss for what to do. I know deep down she still loves me, but is it better if I just let her go?

DEIDRE SAYS: It’s clear your ex is going through an emotionally challenging and stressful time.

Grieving someone who’s still alive is incredibly difficult, especially if you’re caring for them.

Have you had that heart-to-heart conversation, and have you told her that you are prepared to wait? If not, you need to have this discussion.

Hopefully this can help you gain some clarity on the situation.

In the meantime it would be best if you stopped the intimacy and took a step back. If you decide not to rekindle, sleeping with each other will only make your situation harder to deal with.

Tottenham flop who never played a Premier League game leaves new club after ONE DAY as loan deal is cancelled

FORMER Tottenham goalkeeper Pau Lopez has seen a transfer sensationally fall through… just a day after it was officially announced.

The Spaniard, 30, spent the 2016-17 season on loan at White Hart Lane.

He played the role of third choice at Spurs behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

Tottenham denied the opportunity to sign Lopez permanently and he has since gone on to play for Real Betis, Roma and Marseille – in addition to earning two Spain caps.

Last summer, Lopez signed for Girona on loan from Marseille.

He has endured a frustrating first half of the season, having to play second fiddle to fellow ex-Tottenham stopper Paulo Gazzaniga.

Lopez has played just once for the Catalan side, in their 4-3 Copa del Rey exit at the hands of UD Logrones.

Yesterday it was announced that Lopez’s Girona loan would be cancelled, and that he would be heading to Ligue 1 side RC Lens for the remainder of the season.

RC Lens, who are managed by Will Still, recruited Lopez to be their No.1, after letting former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Brice Samba join Rennes.

The French side announced the transfer alongside pictures of Lopez in their shirt.

He had been expected to begin training today, only for Girona to throw a spanner in the works.

An RC Lens statement confirmed: “While a full agreement had been reached between Racing Club de Lens, Olympique de Marseille and Pau Lopez, the arrival of the Spanish international has been cancelled.

“Girona FC informed Olympique de Marseille today of its firm intention to keep the player until 29 January, an unacceptable condition for Racing, which is thus giving up on this signing.”

Marseille posted a statement of their own, explaining why Girona blocked the deal.

It read: “On Tuesday January 7, OM sent Girona FC the draft agreement for the early termination of the temporary transfer.

“Pau Lopez has successfully completed his medical and signed his employment contract with RC Lens, as well as the new loan agreement between RC Lens and OM.

TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: STAY UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE LATEST MOVES FROM THE JANUARY WINDOW

‘QUICKLY DELETED’

“OM, which is strongly committed to respecting contractual commitments and sporting regulations, has never countersigned the loan agreement with RC Lens, pending the signed return of Girona FC.

“Despite the absence of a definitive commitment from all parties, the communication departments of RC Lens and OM decided, in view of their regular collaboration, to announce the arrival of the Spanish goalkeeper at RC Lens, welcoming the new challenge offered to Pau Lopez in our Ligue 1 Championship.

“This premature communication, initiated by RC Lens, was made without any legal validation and was therefore quickly deleted by OM.

“When contacted by OM on the evening of Tuesday 7th January, Girona FC indicated that it would return the agreement for early termination of the loan the same evening or the following morning.

‘JUSTIFIED’

“Finally, mid-day on Wednesday January 8, Girona FC informed OM that they would have to wait until January 22 for the operation to materialize after their UCL match against AC Milan.

“Girona FC justified this position by an injury sustained by their third goalkeeper on their UEFA B list, Lucas Garcia, on Tuesday January 7 during training.”

With Samba having departed, RC Lens will now have to scramble for a new keeper ahead of their Ligue 1 match against Le Havre on Sunday.

Should they fail to secure a new stopper, deputy Herve Koffi will likely start.

Koffi, 28, made his first Ligue 1 appearance of the season last weekend in his side’s 1-0 home defeat to Toulouse.

Onions will keep fresh for months if you store them in item from your underwear drawer

ONIONS don’t have to be included on the weekly shopping list as they have a long shelf life.

Many people find themselves topping up the cupboard with the food staple every couple of weeks.

You can make your onions last longer with an easy hack[/caption]

But a sustainability expert has revealed that you can keep them fresh for months if you follow his unusual tip.

Scott Evans, from the self-storage company Pink Storage, is a food waste pro who likes to help people get the most out of their produce.

Food waste is a growing problem in many households, and with the cost of living continuing to rise, finding ways to make your food last longer is more important than ever.

With Christmas out of the way, many of us will have to make our money stretch further this January and one way is to make our food last longer.

From fresh fruit to leftovers, storing food correctly can save you money, reduce waste, and keep your meals tasting fresh.

And storage expert Scott says a clever hack can make all the difference when it comes to onions.

He said: “It might sound strange, but old-school tricks are often the most effective.”

For this one, in particular, it’s an item in your underwear drawer that you may want to grab.

Scott adds: “Storing onions in clean sheer tights is a brilliant way to keep them fresh for months.

“Place an onion in the leg of the tights, tie a knot, add another onion, and repeat. Hang them in a cool, dry place.

“The knots create separation, preventing moisture and rot from spreading.”

You can also pick up a five-pack of sheer tights from supermarkets including Sainsbury’s for just a fiver, working out at £1 a go.

In general, Scott also suggests rotating food in your fridge.

Sometimes, food gets pushed to the back and can be forgotten about, only to be discovered weeks later when it is out of date.

Scott advises: “While you can manually rotate items in your fridge, it’s easy to forget.

“Instead, try using a spinning kitchen gadget, like a rotating fridge organiser, to keep everything visible and within reach.

“If you can see it, you’re far more likely to use it before it spoils.”

Fridge or cupboard? The essential food storage guide

Foods must be stored correctly to keep them fresh and prevent the spread of bacteria.

Nutrition expert Birgit Brendel said bread will last longer when stored in the fridge or freezer.

However, this can compromise the flavour.

Storing in ceramic or pottery containers is an alternative that allows for air to flow easily and slow the growth of mould.

Robert Morris, managing director of food safety consultants, Complete Food Safety, revealed the best place to store fresh fruit and vegetables.

He said salad foods should be stored in the fridge drawer, but away from anything grown in the soil such as carrots, parsnips and beetroot.

Tomatoes are an exception to the rule as fridges can alter the natural ripening process and diminish their taste.

He also advised against putting avocados and bananas in the fridge as this will cause them to blacken quicker.

I feel more like my husband’s carer than his wife

A woman gives her husband, who is in a wheelchair, his medicine.
Wife giving medicine to disabled husband on wheelchair at home

DEAR DEIDRE: EVER since my husband’s health took a turn for the worse, I’ve felt more like his carer than his wife.

Whether I’m giving him medication, helping him walk around the house, or driving him to hospital appointments, our relationship has been reduced and I’ve had enough.

I’m 62, my husband is 67, and we’ve been married for 35 years.

Our lives were turned upside down when he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoarthritis back to back.

Ever since our marriage hasn’t been the same, and his health has plummeted.

While initially I didn’t mind caring for him, I don’t think I truly understood the burden I’d have to bear.

Now it’s been years since we were last intimate, and I find myself questioning if I even love him anymore.

Everything in me is telling me to leave, but I feel so guilty.

DEIDRE'S STORIES

Rachel's friend makes a suggestion

DEIDRE SAYS: Becoming a carer to the person you love is a very big change, so it’s understandable how difficult this must be for you to cope with.

Even with the strongest relationships, caring for a partner can build feelings of frustration and resentment and ultimately put a strain on your relationship.

Before you give up on him, talk to him and tell him how you feel. Express how much this is impacting you and that you want to work on getting closer again.

My support pack Looking After Your Relationship will help.

Carers need a lot of support also, so do have a look at Carers UK (carersuk.org) for practical support.
