Major blow for hundreds of Irish workers at global charity as funding cuts threaten jobs
HUNDREDS of Irish workers face a major blow after a global charity was forced to make staff redundant due to aid funding cuts.
Concern Worldwide confirmed that it “has been forced” to make staff redundant both in Ireland and some of the countries where it works, as 400 Irish staff were let go.

A statement issued by the company revealed that the most significant job losses were across 13 of the 26 countries where they work.
The affected countries are Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Lebanon, Syria/Iraq, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Haiti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, and Burkina Faso
The statement said: “Nearly 400 staff have been made redundant, but this number is expected to rise due to the severity of the funding cuts.
“Jobs are also at risk in the organisation’s head office in Dublin, but the numbers are still to be determined due to the fluidity of the situation.”
Concern Worldwide expressed gratitude to its employees “for their patience and understanding at an unprecedented time” and acknowledged the “steadfast support” of several donors and supporters.
Earlier this year, United States President Donald Trump signed an executive order to freeze foreign assistance and shut down the US Agency for International Development – but there have been legal issues.
The charity organisation receives funding from the United States, USAID, UNICEF and WFP; the majority of them are reliant on US funding.
It remains unclear what funds will be made available to the charity at the end of Trump’s 90-day funding freeze but they are hopeful that they will be able to retain 50 per cent of the original funding.
The US Office of Management and Budget has also sent Concern a 36-point survey.
Aid organisations are asked to attest that they do not engage in human trafficking, that they do not receive funding from China, and that they will not promote Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI), gender or climate “ideologies”.
It’s understood that the Irish government will not fill the funding gap and that the Taoiseach does not plan on raising the issue when he visits Trump at the White House for St Patrick’s Day.
The Taniste will also not raise it with Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
‘UNCERTAIN FUTURE’
Concern Worldwide stated that many of the countries worst affected by the aid cuts “are experiencing protracted conflicts, forcing a large percentage of their citizens to rely on humanitarian aid for their basic needs such as food, clean water and shelter.
“These aid cuts will have a direct impact on the ability of organisations like Concern to continue to reach those who desperately need our support.”
The statement also highlighted that the programmes providing services and support across healthcare and education are being cut, plus the cash assistance has been halted.
The halt of cash assistance means that families can no longer buy food and safe water.
And the efforts to support displaced people through vocational training and business grants are also now suspended until further notice.
The company pointed out that the agriculture programmes that protect farmers from drought and floods now “face an uncertain future”.

Horror as tourist, 27, & her host gang-raped while stargazing in India by sick attackers who also killed male friend
A TOURIST and her travel host have been gang-raped while stargazing in a horror attack in India.
The sick attackers also killed one of the pair’s male friends by hurling him into a canal while two other men with them survived.

India has been left shocked by the disturbing attack in Karnataka in the country’s south.
Police have said two suspects have been arrested over the sex attack and the killing – while a third remains at large.
Both women – the Israeli tourist and her Indian hostess – are continuing to recover in hospital after the assult on Thursday.
Police chief Ram L Arasiddi said the sick assault began when the host took her four guests – the Israeli women, two Indian men, and another man from the US – stargazing near the canal in Koppal.
The three suspects then arrived on a motorbike and approached the group.
They first asked where they could get petrol – before demanding money from the victims.
And then they attacked, hurling the three men into a canal – killing one of the Indian travellers.
The other men managed to swim to safety.
The gang then attacked the two women, beating and sexually assaulting them, before fleeing on the motorbike.
The case has shocked India – with Karnataka state president B. Y. Vijayendra saying the are still not enough protections for women.
He said authorities remain “delusional and indifferent”.
The state’s chief minister Siddaramaiah said: “Our government is committed to providing protection to everyone, including tourists, coming to the state.
“All necessary measures will be taken to ensure that such incidents do not recur.”
Disturbing spread of sexual violence in India

SEXUAL assaults on women have become disturbingly familiar in India.
Police recorded 31,516 rape cases in 2022, a 20% increase from 2021, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.
The real figure is believed to be far higher due to the stigma surrounding sexual violence and victims lack of faith in police.
Rape and sexual violence have been under the spotlight since the brutal 2012 gang rape and killing of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus.
The attack galvanized massive protests and inspired lawmakers to order the creation of fast-track courts dedicated to rape cases and stiffen penalties.
The rape law was amended in 2013, criminalizing stalking and voyeurism and lowering the age at which a person can be tried as an adult from 18 to 16.
The government in 2018 approved the death penalty for people convicted of raping children under age 12.
Despite stringent laws, its rare for more than a few weeks to pass without another brutal sexual assault being reported.
High-profile cases involving foreign visitors have drawn international attention to the issue.
Last year, in a video that was later deleted, a Spanish tourist said his wife was raped in northern India.
And meanwhile, an Indian-American woman said she was raped at a hotel in New Delhi.
In 2022, a British tourist was raped in front of her partner in Goa.
‘Give the people what they want’ – Ireland fans slam ‘disgraceful’ moment on Peter O’Mahony’s last game at Aviva Stadium
PETER O’MAHONY received a standing ovation from fans at the Aviva Stadium after being subbed off on his last game at home.
However, supporters watching the game at home were left fuming as they missed out on seeing him make the walk off the pitch.

O’Mahony, Conor Murray, and Cian Healy were all playing their last game at Lansdowne Road in the Six Nations clash against France.
The 35-year-old was picked to start on the day and was replaced in the second-half.
This led to the Aviva Stadium crowd giving him a standing ovation which was NOT picked up on the TV cameras.
It drew the ire of supporters who criticized the TV director.
One said: “Fair play to the camera man who showed the ref instead of the Peter O’Mahony standing ovation on leaving the field for last time in Dublin“
Another said: “Jaysus, you’d think the director could have flashed to O’Mahony taking the applause as he left the field!”
A third posted: “Peter O’Mahony walks off the Aviva in green for the last time… Sounded like a brilliant ovation.
“But yeah. Show us the ref. JUST THE REF. Give the people what they want. Ideal TV work.”
A fourth posted: “O’Mahony leaves the pitch for the last time and you guys zoom in on the ref for 40 seconds”
A fifth raged: “Really?!! Peter O’Mahony‘s last home game and the camera was on the ref?!!!! Disgraceful.
“Show us him leaving the pitch and the crowd applauding???!!!”
A sixth commented: “such such such poor camera work…
“O’Mahony last home game and no focus on him; instead close up on the ref; shocking…”
And a sixth lamented: “This is not an easy job, but Peter O’Mahony leaving the Dublin turf for the final time HAS to be shown.
“In fairness to the director the news about the yellow/ red at the same time isn’t ideal – but ……”
One moment that was picked up by the cameras was an emotional moment for Cian Healy before kick-off.
The Leinster prop, 37, visibly held back tears as Cian Ducrot sang Amhran na bhFiann and Ireland‘s Call.
It inspired similar emotion in fans who took to social media to express their appreciation for the titan.
