Inside Crufts biggest controversies from poisoning scandal to streaker as iconic TV competition returns
CRUFTS is back on the box for another year of pampered pooches and strutting canines.
However, despite being dubbed the world’s most prestigious dog show, over the years the show has been dogged by controversial moments.

Crufts has been a fan favourite for many years, ever since the first one in 1939.
More than eight millions viewers tune in every year to the televised event on Channel 4.
The annual competition sees 24,000 dogs and their owners descend on Birmingham.
But sometimes the show leaves viewers with their jaws dropped.
Here we take a look at the scandals and controversies that have hounded Crufts over the years.
POISONING SCANDAL
In 2015, prize-winning Irish Setter Thendara Satisfaction died just days after competing at Crufts.
Also known as Jagger, the three-year-old dog keeled over during a walk back home in Belgium, leaving owners Willem and Aleksandra Lauwers devastated.
The £50,000 pedigree pooch had reportedly consumed beef laced with poison – sparking allegations of a ‘KGB style hit’ within the grounds of the National Exhibition Centre.
The rumour mill went into overdrive when a shih-tzu, a West Highland terrier and Afghan hound also suffered serious illnesses during the tournament.
However, according to the Kennel Club, a post-mortem found the poison in the tainted beef was eaten by the pooch in Belgium, not England.

PEDIGREE BUM
A streaker, wearing a strategically placed cat mask, interrupted judging at Crufts 2010.
Mark Roberts, from Liverpool, shocked fans when he ran across the floor during the Gundog competition.
He was wearing nothing but shoes, socks and a cat-shaped mask covering his modesty.
Mark was quickly escorted from the area, allowing judging to continue.

CRUELTY CLAIMS
It wasn’t a great year for Crufts in 2015, when one of its handlers was blasted with cruelty claims.
The Best in Show winner Rebecca Cross sparked outrage when she picked up her black Scottish terrier Knopa by the tail.
Viewers raged after she lifted the champion pooch off the podium “like a coffee pot”.
Around 190,000 people signed online petitions calling for Rebecca to be stripped of her prestigious title for alleged animal cruelty.

DANGEROUS DOG
An owner of a prize winning dog narrowly escaped jail after her pet attacked someone at Crufts in 2014.
A court heard how Lorain Ronis from Luton had been posing with her five-year-old dog Eddie after he triumphed in the Good Citizen Dog category, when he lunged at an another Akita, called Banks.
The dog was pulled away but then attacked Louie Nelson – who later needed surgery on her knee and was left with permanent nerve damage to her hand.
District Judge Ian Strongman at a magistrates court in Birmingham told Ronis: “I find as a fact that it was your dog who started it by being aggressive towards the other dog.

“Whilst I am sure you are very sorry for the injuries that were caused, you have shown no true remorse.
“Louise Nelson suffered a very severe injury, a life changing injury.
“I accept when your dog started to misbehave you did your level best to restrain him but, no doubt excited by the success that you had, you were not paying proper attention to the dog.
“You allowed it to be too close to the other dog. You did not spot the warning signs.”
The judge sentenced her to a 12 month community order and ordered her to do 250 hours unpaid work, saying he would have sent her to jail but for her exemplary good character.

PROTESTER TACKLED
At the 2018 Crufts, a protester was dramatically tackled to the ground, just as the winner was announced live on TV.
Animal activists stormed the arena as the Best in Show award was handed over, with security guards rushing to stop them in their tracks.
Owner Yvette Short, of Edinburgh, could be seen clutching the overall winner, a two-and-a-half-year-old whippet bitch called Tease, as the chaos unfolded
She had just proudly stepped up onto the podium with the pooch as the intruders sprinted onto the grounds.
But Yvette quickly grabbed Tease as protesters were cornered by security in front of the live audience, who began to boo.
The crowd then broke into applause as the intruders were taken away.

Hollyoaks’ Sarah Jayne Dunn reveals ‘terrifying’ new job after being axed from soap for OnlyFans
HOLLYOAKS star Sarah Jayne Dunn, 43, has revealed her ‘terrifying’ new job, after being axed from the soap for OnlyFans.
The former soap star, who played the role of Mandy Richardson in Hollyoaks from 1996 to 2021, famously left Hollyoaks after she was issued an ultimatum by furious soap bosses: quit adult subscription site OnlyFans, where she was flogging racy shots, or be axed.

The actress quit the Channel 4 soap for a career on OnlyFans three years ago.
Hollyoaks said it doesn’t allow cast members to be active on certain 18+ websites because of the show’s responsibility to its young audience.
Speaking about posting on OnlyFans before, Sarah said it was “about taking back control, about empowerment and confidence and having full power over my choices”.
Now, Sarah has revealed her new job after quitting the soap, and will be teaching her first ever pole class.
Sharing images of herself pole dancing, the actress penned: “I’m excited and terrified in equal measure… because very soon, I’ll be stepping into a whole new challenge- teaching my first beginners’ pole class!
“Pole has been a huge part of my life for over two years now. I first found it just after lockdown, a little before turning 41, when I was looking for something fun, but challenging.
“From the very first spin, I was hooked. What started as a way to move and push myself has become so much more- strength, confidence, and a whole new community of incredible, supportive people who lift each other up (literally!).”
Sarah continued: “I’ve recently started 1:1 training with a new pole coach, and I can already feel myself improving in ways I never expected.
“Pole is as tough as it is beautiful, what looks effortless takes an insane amount of strength, control, and resilience. But that’s what I love about it. Every move mastered feels like a little victory, and there’s always a new challenge to take on.
“Now, I’m about to take the next step, sharing everything I’ve learned with others. My beginner’s classes will be for absolute newbies or anyone wanting to go back to basics!
“I’ll be teaching at the same studio where my journey began too which is exciting @PoleGymholmeschapel, and I can’t wait to help others discover just how empowering pole can be.”
Sarah showed off her toned physique in the carousel of images, as she promoted her new pole class.
She worte a sparkly leotard and had her hair in a colourful plait as she revealed her pole skills for her fans.
One person commented: “These photos are mind boggling @sarahjaynedunn they’re full of warrior woman power and I love them! You’ll be amazing. You’ve excelled at this and been so determined. All the joys!”

Someone else penned: “Wow you look incredible Sarah, I remember when you first started, amazing how far you’ve come. So pleased for you, all the best for your next chapter.”
And another added: “You will be wonderful we just know it. Our gorgeous girl who can achieve anything she puts her mind to.”
It’s not the first time that Sarah has shown off her sensational figure in a skimpy pole dancing outfit.
The star has been praised for her toned body after completely transforming her physique.
She looked ageless as she shared a series of photographs after working out and doing some intense pole dancing.
“My knees have almost recovered,” Sarah penned in the caption of her sizzling set of snaps, revealing that she suffered some pain after her intense work out sessions.
She went on to add: “If you missed my stories last month, I had the BEST workshop with @dapnelux, is was a HUGE challenge- those moves were FAST, especially tying them all together to music!”
Sarah added: “I left feeling tired but inspired to sign up for more workshops this year with this wonderful community of supportive women.
“I’ve got much further to go before I’m anywhere near as slick as Daphne (although she has been at it much longer than me!) but what an inspiration!”
One fan remarked: “You look absolutely amazing. Your body shape has changed so much. Great job.”
A second said: “I can’t believe how much your physic has changed! Looking fab!”
Michaela Strachan winning Dancing On Ice would make history – here’s why fans say she MUST walk away with trophy
DANCING On Ice fans are calling for Michaela Strachan to win in the final after saying she MUST walk away with the trophy.
The wildlife presenter has captured the hearts of Dancing On Ice viewers and now they’re hoping she’ll make history on the show.

The beloved contestant is the oldest remaining celeb on the ice and is on course to be the first female winner DOI has seen in 12 years.
She joined the accident-prone ITV series against the wishes of her partner, cameraman Nick Chevallier, after breaking her foot last summer.
But her determination has seen her gliding to success each week.
If Michaela claims the trophy, she would be the show’s first female winner since Beth Tweddle in 2013.
For Michaela, it’s not just a late career adventure, it’s also a return to her first love as a child growing up in Surrey.
The star, who now lives in South Africa, said: “My passion as a child was dancing and musicals. I went to a local dancing school and did ballet, tap, modern dance, acrobatics, singing and drama.
“I did all the competitions and exams and my dream was to perform in the theatre.”
She even turned that into a career, saying: “I pursued this dream by doing a musical theatre course at the Arts Educational College in.
“I left in 1985 and toured in the musical ‘7 Brides For 7 Brothers’ ending up a year later in the West End Of London at the Prince Of Wales theatre.”
Fans are now rallying for Michaela to banish the long streak of male winners and celebrate her talent.
One said on X: “I say this as one of Dancing on Ice’s two remaining viewers.

“Please vote for her to win folks.”
Another echoed: “Need Michaela to win. Need a female winner!!”

One more raved: “MICHAELA STRACHAN IN THE FINAL! The oldest finalist in the show’s history
“AND if she wins this series she’ll be, The first female winner in 12 years, The oldest winner ever, potentially the FINAL winner.”
