Emmerdale hints at secret affair between two unlikely characters before one was brutally killed in horror limo crash

EMMERDALE viewers think the soap has hinted a secret affair between two unlikely characters – from before one of them was brutally killed off.

Fans saw Suzy Merton (Martelle Edinborough) die in the ITV soap’s horror limo crash aired earlier this month.

Suzy notably had a relationship with Vanessa Woodfield (Michelle Hardwick) during her time in the village.

But viewers think she may have secretly had an affair before her tragic demise.

Namely, with Mary Goskirk (Louise Jameson), who has mourned the loss of Suzy.

While Mary described Suzy as a “friend”, fans haven’t been left convinced.

One wrote on X: “#emmerdale Oh hello Mary…was suzy more than a friend…..”

Another added: “Yo Mary and Suzy have definitely had an affair or some kind of a moment..

“She was my friend” More than that love. #emmerdale.”

A third remarked: “Why do I get the feeling Suzy and Mary had a secret affair #emmerdale.”

It comes following viewers last year begging show bosses to write a “happily ever after” for Mary.

She and Suzy had grown close while Vanessa was away from the village, in Canada.

Mary failed to tell Suzy how she really felt when she asked her, after hearing Vanessa gush over her earlier in the episode.

Later, Vanessa and Suzy shared a kiss, but it wasn’t long before Suzy was glancing over at Mary.

This left Emmerdale viewers screaming for bosses to give the pub cook a happy ending.

In the preceding months, Mary had been conned by former love interest Faye Helders and left embarrassed after she shared compromising pictures of her around the village.

She also contended with daughter Rhona’s drama with her ex-partner Gus over baby Ivy, which was stressful for the whole family.

Taking to X – formerly Twitter – Emmerdale fans discussed the love triangle between the three women.

Most devastating soap deaths

SOAP viewers are frequently left heartbroken after watching some of their favourite characters bite the dust.

Here is a list of the most devastating deaths that have taken place in soapland over the years.

EASTENDERS

Barry Evans – Evil Janine (Charlie Brooks) lured her trusting fiance to Scotland for a quickie marriage after learning he was dying.

Her plan to inherit Barry’s fortune was thwarted when Barry told her that the doctors had mixed up his medical files.

Furious that she was no longer set for a windfall, she pushed Barry off a cliff after telling him their love was “fake”.

Bradley Branning – Bradley was accused of killing Stacey Slater’s rapist Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb) after he punched him twice on the night he died.

He was spotted in the Square by a police woman who chased him up a fire escape.

Bradley lost his balance and tragically plunged to his death.

CORONATION STREET

Tina McIntyre – Tina was getting it on with Peter Barlow – despite him being married to Carla Connor.

When she threatened to reveal the truth, Carla’s brother Rob got into a physical altercation with her.

Tina lost her footing and fell off a balcony – then warned Rob she was going to tell the cops he pushed her.

In a panic, Rob brutally clobbered her over the head with a metal pipe.

Molly Dobbs – Molly was one of the victims in Corrie’s 2010 tram crash, alongside Ashley Peacock (Steven Arnold).

Married to Tyrone (Alan Halsall), Molly had been having an affair with Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) in the months before her death.

This resulted in the birth of their son, Jack (Kyran Bowes), who was named after Jack Duckworth.

As fate would have it, Kevin’s wife Sally (Sally Dynevor) was by Molly’s side in her final moments.

Sally was stunned as Molly confessed Kevin was Jack’s father, before dying of her injuries.

Vera Duckworth – Having appeared regularly in Corrie since the 1970s, there was no denying Vera Duckworth was an iconic character.

Alongside her husband Jack, the pair formed one of the soap’s most beloved couples.

Viewers were heartbroken when Vera was killed off in 2008, being discovered having passed away peacefully in her chair.

Liz Dawn, who played Vera, made a brief return two years later for Bill Tarmey’s exit as Jack.

Paul Foreman – Fans were heartbroken when Paul Foreman succumbed to his illness after battling motor neurone disease.

Introduced in 2018 as David Platt’s (Jack P. Shepherd) cellmate, he later embarked on a romance – and marriage – with vicar Billy Mayhew.

The MND storyline was announced in 2023 – with the expectation it would result in the character’s death.

EMMERDALE

Sarah Sugden – After the family got into financial problems, Sarah’s son Andy (Kelvin Fletcher) decided to make some quick cash from an insurance company by setting fire to the Sugden barn.

He didn’t realise his mum was inside the building, and she got trapped in the blaze.

Nine villagers – The shocking 1993 plane crash episode brought in 18 million viewers for Emmerdale.

Mark Hughes was killed by a falling wall, Archie Brooks was burned by jet fuel, Elizabeth Pollard was killed by debris and newcomer Leonard Kempinski died in a car crash caused by the crash.

Five other non-recurring characters from the village also died.

HOLLYOAKS

Carmel McQueen – The talented singer died in shocking scenes when a train crashed into a her family’s car.

Carmel managed to free her cousin Theresa from the rubble – but got stuck in it herself.

Moments later the train exploded and Carmel died in the arms of her family members, promising to be their guardian angel.

One wrote: “The fact that Suzy had just kissed Vanessa then immediately was making heart eyes at Mary. She needs to sort this out before everyone gets hurt.”

Another said: “I don’t cringe but all my sympathy is with Mary.”

While a third demanded: “WILL SOMEONE PLEASE KISS MARY GOSKIRK????? Suzy Merton, I’m looking at you. Leave Vanessa alone and get on that. Cheers.”

Emmerdale continues on ITV1 and ITVX.

The five DIY tricks to stop your home from smelling damp – they ward off mould too

WITH the colder weather and drying clothes indoors, you may notice a musty smell in your home.

This is likely to be caused by dampness and is not only bad for your property but your health too.

Drying clothes indoors can contribute to damp smells and condensation[/caption]

Thankfully, with the below simple hacks, it’s never been easier to combat the problem.

Manish Jain, IICRC trained and certified Water Restoration Expert and business owner of Ministry of Cleaning, has revealed his top five hacks to combat damp smells.

Boost circulation

Trapped air is common, especially when windows and doors are kept shut.

For this reason, it’s recommended you open them regularly.

Even doing it for 10 minutes a day has been proven to reduce moisture in the air and therefore minimise the risk of dampness and mould.

Interior doors should be open too and furniture pulled away from walls to keep optimum air flow.

Use natural moisture absorbers

Baking soda naturally absorbs excess moisture and neutralises smells. This makes it an effective solution for damp rooms.

Simply place bowls of baking soda around your home – or rock salt as it works just as well.

Be sure to replace the contents every four weeks for best results.

Essential oils can even be added to the bowl for extra freshness.

Treat condensation quickly

Wipe away condensation from windows and doors every morning using a clean cloth.

If left, the excess moisture can turn into damp, smells and mould.

You can even place bowls of rice near windows to act as a DIY dehumidifier.

When showering or boiling food, keep doors shut and try to use an extractor fan or open a window to stop the steam from spreading.

Deep clean soft furnishings

Mattresses, carpets, curtains and upholstery should be cleaned regularly to remove lingering smells, excess moisture and bacteria.

Those items that can be put into the washing machine should be, but those that can’t can be freshened up with a homemade cleaning spray made from white vinegar and water.

Baking soda can be sprinkled on items, left for 30 minutes and vacuumed.

Keep your home smelling fresh

Despite best efforts, some smells just linger. In these events, you can place bowls of white vinegar around rooms.

The solution absorbs any smells and the vinegar smells disappear too.

Simmering a pot of orange peel, cloves and cinnamon works a treat as well.

But Manish adds: “While these methods can mask or reduce odours, addressing the underlying dampness is crucial for long-term results.”

Woman found ‘mummified’ after lying dead in flat for more than three years was left to ‘fend for herself by authorities’

A WOMAN was found “mummified” in her home more than three years after she was left to “fend for herself” by authorities, an inquest heard.

Laura Winham, 38, was discovered by her brother on May 23, 2021, when he visited the home in Woking, Surrey.

He was about to leave but went back for “one last look” through the letter box when he noticed what resembled a foot underneath a blanket.

Police broke down the door to find Laura in a “mummified” state, an inquest heard.

Surrey Coroner’s Court heard it was impossible to narrow down a time of death but a calendar in the flat had dates crossed off until November 1, 2017.

Laura’s devastated family believe she was “abandoned and left to die” by social and mental health services.

Coroner Karen Henderson ruled there were “lost opportunities” for multiple agencies in the run-up to her death.

These included Woking Borough Council and its former contractor, New Vision Homes, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), and Surrey County Council’s adult social care team.

The court heard Laura had schizophrenia and believed her loved ones were trying to harm her.

Her family made the agonising decision in 2009 to stop seeing Laura to follow her wishes.

But they would often drive past her home to check her car was still there and they had social media contact until 2014.

Laura had told them: “It is best to have minimum/no contact. And communications with the family. It is totally out of my hands.

“There is nothing I can do. Everything I say will get repeated and relayed back. Be patient.”

Following a police referral in October 2017, the council’s adult social care team called and wrote to Laura offering advice about food banks but did not visit the property.

Her sister then contacted New Visions Homes two months before the discovery as they were concerned for Laura’s welfare.

An official went to the social housing flat but there was no answer, the inquest was told.

A statement from a former employee at New Vision Homes, which was the landlord contractor for WBC from 2015 to April 2022, said: “Ms Winham’s sister reached out on 31 March 2021 to ask if New Vision Homes had been in contact with her.

“Her family said a lot of post had gathered and they were concerned about her welfare.

“Woking Borough Council completed a door knock which received no answer. It was at the end of May that New Vision Homes were told she had been found dead.”

The statement added that it was “clear she was vulnerable” and that “she should have been flagged as vulnerable as this would have alerted New Vision Homes and WBC to her vulnerability”.

Laura’s gas had been turned off in January 2019 due to a contractor not being able to gain access to complete an annual check.

They had made several attempts to get in touch with Laura by phone and post regarding the scheduled December 2018 check-up with no response.

The court heard Laura been served an eviction notice in April 2014 after falling into rent arrears of £1,579.

A council housing officer intervened and helped Laura make a new housing benefit claim and encouraged her to see her GP.

Her rent arrears were subsequently paid by a third party and the eviction did not happen.

Tragic diary entries Laura had written in the months before she is believed to have died revealed she was struggling to get food.

One on September 28, 2017, read: “My mobile gave up on 7 September. I got a Tesco run in before it died.

“I have slept weeks away… I haven’t stocked any food for months because I don’t know what’s happening.”

Other extracts suggested she had been living off potatoes and cheese and had “about five pounds left on me”.

In October 2017, Laura wrote: “It has been a whole month since my last food shop. I cannot believe I have survived this long”.

She also scrawled “I’m starving” on her calendar on September 15, 2017, and told how she was “dreaming of food”.

A statement from the family said: “When Laura was referred to adult social care in October 2017, as the police raised concerns as to her having little food or money and being without a network of friends or family, all that happened was a letter that was sent and that was a huge opportunity missed to assess Laura’s health and to take action.

“Laura was clearly a person potentially at risk but she wasn’t deemed worthy of visiting. She was left to fend herself.

“Even her own diary entries illustrate she was unable to cope.

“Had adult social care visited Laura’s home within a few days of the referral in October 2017 then Laura would be alive.”

Dr Henderson described the team’s investigation as “perfunctory in almost every way”.

He also ruled that, had Woking Borough Council and New Vision Homes flagged Laura as vulnerable then it would have been evident she required further assistance.

But the coroner said it was not possible to conclude these “lost opportunities materially contributed” to Laura’s death.

The broadcaster renewed the show for another season following the success of season two, which averaged 8.1m viewers.

It was streamed over 30m times on ITVX, making it the second most-watched drama on ITV1 this year, behind Mr Bates vs The Post Office.

Leaked photos show Vicky filming on location and back in her heavy suit of body armor filming tense scenes.

She was spotted taking part in an armed raid into a house with her police colleagues.

But who and what are they looking for?

The season two finale concluded at Danny’s wedding, where Lana is clearly not okay but still manages to enjoy herself with her parents.

The third season will feature even more twists and explosions.

Other returning cast members for season three include Eric Shango as Danny, Nabil Elouahabi as Hassan Rahim, Natalie Simpson as DS Helen Morgan and Maanuv Thiara as DI Amar Batra.

Chris Brandon will write the series, and Jamie Donoghue and Audrey Cooke will direct.

The cast reunited for a night out in London, including a trip on a rickshaw.

The cast has also met with the show’s creator, Jed Mercurio, to discuss a deal and filming dates.

  • Manhunt: Martin Clunes stars in this drama based on true murder investigations. Series one focused on the death of Amélie Delagrange, which took place in 2004, while the second depicted the search for serial rapist Delroy Grant.

This comes after Vicky shared a heartfelt tribute to her “hero granddad” following his sad death back in December.

In an emotional statement, the actress has said she feels “grateful” for having such a wonderful grandfather during her life.

She shared some photographs of her war veteran ‘Grandad Ralph’ and told of his love for “football, gardening and his family”.

He passed away aged 99 – just two months shy of his 100th birthday.

Last year, Vicky starred in an emotional documentary called My Grandad’s War, which told of Ralph’s participation in the Second World War.

The documentary followed the actress as she tried to understand how her grandad found himself in the Royal Navy and at the centre of a world-changing battle on the Normandy beaches on June 6, 1944.

After learning about Ralph’s early life, they headed to Portsmouth where Ralph showed his granddaughter the ropes aboard one of the last remaining WWII landing craft.

Vicky was reduced to tears as they stood on Sword beach where his tank landing craft came ashore on D-Day.

Writing on Instagram, Vicky confirmed that Ralph has passed away.

Alongside some pictures, she also posted a video of herself and Ralph singing You’ll Never Walk Alone together.

She wrote: “My Grandad Ralph peacefully passed away this morning 🤍

“His love for football, gardening and his family kept him young all these years.

“I feel so grateful having so many special memories with him.

“A much loved hero by all and a loving Grandad to all his grandkids and great grandkids.”

Vicky added: “Sleep well Grandad, back with Nana Jean now, giggling and dancing in the stars. 🕊🤍 xxx Ralph McClure – 1.2.25 – 2.12.24.”
