Scotland 35 Wales 29: Finn Russell finds boot redemption as Gregor Townsend’s team bounce back for bonus at Murrayfield

SCOTLAND bounced back from their Calcutta Cup disappointment to send sorry Wales to their 16th defeat on the spin.

The loss to England two weeks earlier ended any chance of Gregor Townsend’s men winning this year’s Six Nations.

And they will be wondering what might have been after running in five tries to claim a bonus-point victory – and the Doddie Weir Cup with it.

Blair Kinghorn and Tom Jordan bagged a brace each with Darcy Graham marking his comeback from injury with a first-half score.

Finn Russell also put his Twickenham nightmare behind him as he successfully kicked all five conversion efforts.

Wales rallied late on to make it more respectable on the scoreboard by landing three second-half tries to add to the one they scored before the break.

And they could have won it had Taulupe Faletau not had a late try ruled out towards the end.

Scotland were relieved to see that call go their way.

And they head to Paris now to meet in-form France knowing that – had they beaten England – it would have been a championship decider.

Wales jumped out to a brilliant start when Gareth Anscombe knocked over a penalty.

But Scotland roared back with a brilliant try just a few minutes later.

The home side had to be patient after 13 phases of attack were stopped by the Welsh.

But Russell was the man to get them going, spinning a pass wide to the returning Graham.

The winger drew the tackle and fed Kinghorn who skipped past Anscombe before sliding in at the corner for a stunning try.

Russell – from an almost identical position to the one he missed late on at Twickenham – nailed the extras.

Scotland were up and running and eager to attack at every opportunity.

And it wasn’t long before they were adding to their lead with another terrific team try.

Jordan set them off with a pass inside to Duhan van der Merwe who found Huw Jones.

The centre burst down the line before slipping the ball to Jordan who went in under the posts for his first try in Scotland colours.

Wales were lucky not to be reduced temporarily to 14 men.

Ben Thomas ran into Duhan van der Merwe and then seemed to claw his fingers into the Scotland man’s face.

The TMO asked ref Andrea Piardi to have another look at it – but the Italian felt the incident didn’t merit a card.

Wales heaved a sigh of relief and were soon celebrating a try of their own.

It stemmed from a piece of genius from Anscombe, the fly-half clipping a pass over the top.

And full-back Blair Murray was onto it first to dot down.

Scotland took that on the chin and were soon back on the front foot to plunder a third try.

Ben White got them going with a great burst through the middle.

The ball was worked wide where Russell threw a brilliant dummy to delay a pass to Graham who sped over for his 30th Scotland try.

Wales were starting to lose their shape and did finally get a player sent to the bin.

It was daft from Will-Grifff John who stuck out a leg to try to stop White and was shown a yellow card.

It was all going wrong for the visitors at this point and they soon gifted Scotland a fourth try to wrap up the bonus point before the break.

Murray’s risky pass was bobbled by Thomas, and Jordan could scarcely believe his luck as he gathered up the loose ball for his second try.

Russell had his eye in as he made another successful kick to give Scotland a 20-point half-time lead.

Wales almost shocked Scotland with a stunning second-half comeback in this fixture a year ago.

But Toony’s troops initially showed no sign of letting up this time as they bagged a fifth try.

The maul was held up as they tried to drive for the line but the ball was quickly recycled.

And Russell worked it wide to Kinghorn who burst over for his second score of the game.

The game went into a bit of a lull but Wales to their credit didn’t wave the white flag.

And their persistence was rewarded when Thomas finished off a good move by powering over the line.

Scotland looked to have switched off and they coughed up a third try when Teddy Williams stretched for the line – reducing the gap to just two scores.

Faletau looked to have landed Wales a bonus point only for the TMO to rule it out for Murray leaping a tackle earlier in the move.

But Wales did go on to claim two bonus points when Max Llewellyn powered over with the clock in the red as Scotland ended the game with a whimper.

‘You need to stay home’ people say as mum shows the extreme measures she takes to ensure her tot is safe when shopping

A MUM has been slammed after sharing the extreme measures she takes to keep her young daughter safe whilst doing grocery shopping.

Karolina, known as karolina.my.motherhood on TikTok, came under fire for a video where the mother demonstrated ”mum hacks” to ensure the tot ”stays safe”.

The little tot was attached to the shopping trolley using a carabiner[/caption]

In the clip, which has since taken the internet by storm for all the wrong reasons, Karolina could first be seen cutting a pool noodle open – which she then attached to the front of the shopping trolley.

To keep both her and her daughter’s hands germ-free, the parent also went over the Tesco handle with a disinfectant wipe.

According to Karolina, who is a first-time mum, not only was the trolley now ”hygienic” but the soft pool noodle also protected ”the child from hitting the head”.

Once done, the mother grabbed a carabiner which she used to attach the back of her daughter’s jeans to the child’s seat in the trolley.

This is believed to prevent the little girl from attempting to stand up from the plastic seat.

While the majority of ”hacks” were to do with the child’s safety, Karolina also shared an easy tip for those who know their kid will want to munch on something whilst inside the store.

For this, the mother filled a reusable cup with her daughter’s favourite snack and attached it to the trolley using the cup’s handle.

Last but not least, she advised fellow parents in the short clip: ”Park as close as possible to shopping carts to make it easy to transfer your child.”

But despite justifying her precautions as safe for her when she is doing her grocery shopping with the tot, many other TikTokers disagreed with her extreme techniques.

Some of the 404k viewers took to her comments section to share their thoughts.

One said: ”This must be really stressful living your life this afraid.”

”I’m genuinely lucky if I remember a pound for a trolley,” chimed in another.

”At this point you need to stay at home and order online,” joked someone else.

”Aww honey. This isn’t “mum hacks” it’s paranoia,” commented a social media user.

More parenting hacks

IF you want to make your life easier as a first-time mum, here's nine hacks you won't want to miss.

1. Routine Charts

Create visual charts for daily routines. Use pictures and stickers to make them engaging for younger children.

2. Meal Planning

Plan meals a week in advance to save time and reduce stress. Involve your children in meal prep to teach them cooking skills.

3. Toy Rotation

Keep a portion of toys stored away and rotate them periodically. This keeps playtime fresh and exciting without the need for constant new purchases.

4. DIY Cleaning Solutions

Make child-safe cleaning solutions using vinegar and baking soda. It’s effective and keeps harsh chemicals away from little hands.

5. Time-Out Jar

Create a time-out jar filled with calming activities written on slips of paper. When emotions run high, children can pick an activity to help them settle down.

6. Educational Apps

Utilise educational apps and websites to make screen time productive. Look for ones that offer interactive learning in subjects your child is interested in.

7. Command Centre

Set up a family command centre with a calendar, key hooks, and a bulletin board. It helps keep everyone organised and aware of daily schedules.

8. Emergency Kit

Keep a small emergency kit in the car with essentials like snacks, water, first aid supplies, and a change of clothes. It’s a lifesaver for unexpected situations.

9. Label Everything

Use labels for clothes, school supplies, and lunch boxes. It makes it easier to keep track of belongings, especially in shared spaces like schools.

”Do online shopping if you’re this worried about something happening on a supermarket shop.”

A fifth, meanwhile, thought one of the ”hacks” could pose more harm than any good.

”For the love of god do not use the carabiner clip,” they warned.

”So dangerous if you had to get your child out quickly in an emergency situation this is so dangerous.”

From a fussy eating cat to a dog scared of the dark garden – your pet queries answered

HE is on a mission to help our pets  . . . and is here to answer YOUR questions.

Sean, who is the head vet at tailored pet food firm tails.com, has helped with owners’ queries for ten years.

Sean McCormack, head vet at tails.com, promises he can ‘help keep pets happy and healthy’

Q) OUR 11-year-old cat Sid is such a fussy eater we have had to buy all different brands to tempt him.

We’re always throwing unwanted food away and putting new food out.

Sometimes the brand he rejected the week before is the one he then seems to love.

Is this normal?

SALLY POUNDER, Leeds

Sean says: Pretty normal.

As I’ve said here before, I think cats just like to test us and remind us that we are their mere servants.

I don’t think there is a medical reason, but if changes in appetite are sudden, or there is any serious weight loss, then it’s worth getting Sid checked by your vet.

I also wonder if there may be dental pain.

But it’s likely Sid just knows that variety comes when he refuses to eat.

So it may be that a battle of wills is the best approach.

If he doesn’t eat, the food gets taken up and put down again later that day.

I doubt he will waste away, he might just complain harder during the adjustment period.

Q) WE have a male blackbird on a wall outside our kitchen window daily from 7.30am until dark.

We feed him all through the day with various nuts, oats, bread and fat.

I’m worried he will refrain from fending for himself if we continue to support him.

Should we stop?

SALLY MALECZEK, Peterborough

Sean says: Lucky you, I love blackbirds.

Sadly, they may be in trouble with the Usutu virus that has caused a 40 per cent reduction in their numbers in Greater London since 2020.

So I would say continue to feed all garden birds.

It helps increase their chances of breeding success.

Be careful of disease transmission though by moving feeding locations and cleaning and disinfecting feeders regularly.

I don’t think helping your blackbird will hinder his chances of finding food on days you’re not around.

Q) DESPITE her litter tray being cleaned every day, our 15-year-old cat Lily has stopped using it.

Instead, she pees and poops on the floor.

This has been happening for the past two months.

COLETTE FENN, Cambridge

Sean says: There could be a few reasons but as it has been going on for a number of months it could be a hard habit to break.

Cats are creatures of habit, and the scent of previous toileting places will stimulate them to go there again.

So it’s important to thoroughly clean the area with a pet-safe cleaning product then a pet deodorising spray.

You can deter Lily from going in her new favourite spot by either limiting access to it or changing the surface material temporarily.

A sheet of plastic is a cheap and simple choice.

But why is she doing it?

It could be an early sign of senile changes.

It could also be a sign of kidney disease or another hormonal issue.

Or something stress related.

A vet visit at age 15 for a general health check is probably a good idea.

Q) MY four-year-old black lab Nellie refuses to go into the garden after dark.

It means sometimes she has an accident in the night.

She loves going out for her usual two walks a day.

JOHN MOORE, Hitchin, Herts

Sean says: I wonder if something frightened poor Nellie out in the garden after dark.

She may have made an association there.

The trick to tackling this is to use behavioural modification techniques.

Have a look into habituation, response substitution and counter conditioning.

Basically, you want to have Nellie associate nocturnal garden visits with positive feelings and rewards.

Star of the week

BRAVE Billy refused to let two broken legs slow him down.

After a racing career, the seven-year-old was taken in by Hector’s Greyhound Rescue near Aberystwyth, Mid Wales.

Owner Hayley Bradley says: “The trainer had one of his legs repaired, but the other leg was ignored.

“By the time he came to us it was too late for corrective surgery, so it is bent.”

Since his arrival in July 2022, Hector has shown himself to be a big softie.

Hayley says: “He has a big heart.

“If you’re short enough, he assumes your shoulders are the perfect perch for his paws to initiate cuddle time.

“If anyone was thinking about giving a retired racer a good home, he’s the one.”

Keep pooches safe from spring perils

Woman kneeling with two dogs in a field.
Follow these five important tips to ensure your dogs stay safe on spring walks
Supplied

DOG first-aid expert Rachel Bean, who wrote the International Pet Education and Training Network’s qualification in Canine First Aid, has revealed the five biggest spring hazards – and how to tackle them.

1) Poisonous plants: Many plants bloom in spring, including toxic daffodils, bluebells, and buttercups.

Ingestion can lead to vomiting, drooling, and even organ failure.

Contact a vet or emergency animal hospital urgently.

2) Heatstroke: Sudden warm days can cause heatstroke so ensure access to water and shade, and don’t walk them in the hottest part of the day.

3) Mud and puddles: Puddles might contain bacteria that can cause Leptospirosis, a dangerous infection.

If your dog has vomiting, lethargy, or fever, see a vet immediately.

4) Pollen and hay fever: If you dog shows signs like itching, sneezing, and watery eyes, consult a vet.

Wiping down their paws and coat after walks can help reduce exposure.

5) Fleas and ticks: These can transmit diseases like Lyme disease.

Check your dog after walks and remove ticks carefully using a tick remover tool, or seek veterinary attention.
