Katie McCabe slams Republic of Ireland’s ‘unacceptable’ defeat as Carla Ward takes full blame for Slovenia thrashing

KATIE McCABE called Ireland’s shocking 4-0 loss to Slovenia “completely unacceptable” – but new manager Carla Ward insisted she is to blame.

The Girls in Green suffered their heaviest competitive defeat in 17 years, with three goals shipped in the first half, on a night to forget in Koper.

Republic of Ireland head coach Carla Ward has taken full responsibility for the shock defeat

And skipper McCabe acknowledged that there can be no excuses, even as the players adjust to a new system under boss Ward.

McCabe said: “It was completely unacceptable by our standards. We can’t start games like that. We need to look at ourselves, we have to go back to the drawing board.

“The goals were avoidable. We gifted them their chances. We have to be better.

“We’re trying a new system and we’re going to make mistakes and we need to be brave. But we just weren’t clean rough and we gave them too much space.

“But I know the girls love playing for their country and we won’t have a performance like that again.”

Boss Ward said that she was to blame for the result as players adjust to her more attacking system that the more defensive tactics used in the last five years.

Ward said: “It’s on me. You can’t have a half of football like that and expect to win the game. It is a horrible night but it is a huge learning curve at the minute.

“It’s my job and it’s important that I take the pressure away from the players.”

The more defensive tactics under Vera Pauw and then Eileen Gleeson saw Ireland qualify for the World Cup and go close to reaching both Euro 2021 and Euro 2025.

But Ward insisted she will stick to her belief that the team can be more creative, and stick to the tactics she used at Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Aston Villa that got her the job.

She said: “It was not system. Maybe a couple of players in different positions and trying something a little different.

“We aren’t going to rip it up, we have to own it  and we have to make sure that half of football never happens again because that is unacceptable.”

The Prince of Wales cheered Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions from the stands in Germany as they went all the way to final at Euro 2024 only to agonisingly lose against Spain.

And he took Prince George to games at Wembley during their run to the final in Euro 2021.

Tuchel, 51, who won the Champions League with Chelsea, officially took on the ‘Impossible Job’ in January.

Wills and Tuchel first met in the stands when Villa beat Celtic 4-2 last month.

Sources close to William, who is Patron of the FA, said yesterday’s royal welcome was an opportunity for the German boss to share his views on the team since taking over and his hopes for the future.

While William was highly likely to speak about Villa’s European campaign and last 16 clash with Club Brugge next week, they said.

Tuchel’s first game in charge is against Albania at Wembley on March 21 and his contract runs out after the 2026 World Cup.

The agreement, which centres on the joint development of Ukraine’s vast mineral resources — including oil and gas — comes after Washington dropped its demand for a $500 billion share of potential revenues.

While the deal does not include explicit US security guarantees, Ukrainian officials see it as a step toward deepening economic and strategic cooperation, the Financial Times reports.

“The minerals agreement is only part of the picture. We have heard multiple times from the US administration that it’s part of a bigger picture,” Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Olha Stefanishyna told the FT on Tuesday.

Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary plots 2m seats on Ukraine flights ‘in six weeks’ if war ends with new routes and two bases

RYANAIR could have as many as five million passengers per year in Ukraine within a year or two of reopening its skies.

Airline boss Michael O’Leary made the claim as the low-cost airline prepares for a return to the war-torn country.

With US President Donald Trump vowing to bring the war in Ukraine to an end soon, airlines including Ryanair and its low-cost competitor Wizz Air are getting in position to resuming flights.

CEO O’Leary said: “Straight out-of-the-box we have two million seats in there within six weeks (of the sky reopening) and then I think we would want to open bases both in Kyiv and Lviv within 12 months.

“I think we could go from two to five million passengers within a year or two.”

He said returning to some other airports in Ukraine could take longer due to greater damage from the three-year war between Russia and Ukraine.

He said the airline wanted to have six to eight routes to Ukraine from Poland.

Ryanair will launch 24 new routes from Poland this summer.

Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw yesterday, O’Leary added: “Fares will grow between four and six per cent this year, so you’ll still be travelling at slightly cheaper prices than in the summer of 2023.”

The Irish airline experienced a 10 per cent fall in fares over its two summer quarters last year, in part due to a dispute with online travel agents.
