Her friend has posted a snap taken of Maria moments before she fell.

In a post on fundraising site JustGiving, pal Victoria Critchley said: “We are reaching out with heavy hearts to ask for your support for the family of Maria Eftimova.

“Our dear friend tragically lost her life in an accident whilst scrambling Tryfan on Saturday 22nd of February 2025.

“Maria was an ambitious, bright and cherished 28-year-old, whose vibrant personality, energy and aura touched and uplifted all around her.

“She had a passion for engineering, having studied civil engineering at the University of Salford and a love for extreme sports.

“Her biggest passion being snowboarding, which she was super excited for and looking forward to doing again on her upcoming trip to Austria. She had an insatiable thirst for life and exploring our world’s beauty. Tragically, she was taken from her family far far far too soon!

“Words cannot express the devastation her family and our community are experiencing.

“Adding to their immense grief, the family, who reside in Bulgaria, face a significant financial burden to repatriate Maria and give her the dignified farewell with her loved ones that she deserves.

“The costs associated with international repatriation are substantial, and we want to alleviate the added burden/stress so they can focus on mourning their precious daughter.

“Every contribution, no matter how small, will make a tangible difference in enabling the family to grieve without this added worry.

“Please join us in offering them comfort and support during this incredibly difficult time. By sharing human kindness through even the tiniest donation, we can demonstrate that they are not walking this path alone. Any and all donetions made will go to Maria’s family.

“Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue attended and did everything within their powers to save Maria. We’d like to express our heartfelt gratitude for their efforts and will create a separate fundraiser.

“Thank you for your kindness and generosity. With love from Maria’s friends and Family.”

An Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation statement said: “A group was ascending the north-ridge when one of them fell 20 metres into steep terrain.

“Passers-by with climbing equipment abseiled down and made her safe, and a team member already nearby made his way down and started CPR.

“Colleagues from [The Welsh Ambulance Service] stood by at base while the [coastguard] helicopter dropped team members onto the mountain.

“Unfortunately, the casualty had not survived her injuries, and she was brought down to Oggie base.”

Fairy tales can be an important part of growing up. They help to install moral lessons that we use throughout our lives.

Should you help someone in need? Yes, often a good deed comes back around.

Should you act on feelings of anger or jealousy? No, most likely it won’t end well.

Fairy tales created a way to impart wisdom on children in a fun yet educational way.

PLAY IN THE DEAL OR NO DEAL THEMED ROOMS

For instance, you shouldn’t go into the woods alone as there are wolves who like to eat solo travellers.

You also shouldn’t accept sweets from strangers, they may turn out to be witches who want to eat you.

Tale as old as time

The term “fairy tale” was coined by 17th century French writer Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, countess d’Aulnoy, when she released Les Contes des Fées (fairy tales) in 1697.

The countess published 25 stories in total, most of which had characters who were fairies.

Her stories include some familiar titles such as The Story of Pretty Goldilocks and Cunning Cinders.

Brothers Grimm

Probably the most famous fairy tale authors, Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm, published their first collection of fairy tales, Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children’s and Household Tales) in 1812.

They wanted to preserve traditional folklore when oral storytelling was becoming unpopular.

More volumes were published, amalgamating in Grimm’s Fairy Tales, which contains just over 200 stories.

Among these titles are some of the best known fairy tales:

  • Sleeping Beauty
  • Rumpelstiltskin
  • The Frog Prince

Hans Christian Andersen

The other main source of the fairy tales still told today is Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales.

Andersen began publishing fairy tales in 1835 with Fairy Tales Told for Children.

He eventually published 168 tales in total. Andersen’s collection includes:

  • The Little Mermaid
  • Thumbelina
  • Ugly Duckling

Not-so-happily ever after

Fairy tales have had to change a lot since they were first told.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN PICKING A BINGO ROOM

For instance, the original endings to some of the classic fairy tales would be considered far too gruesome today.

In the original Cinderella, the stepsisters chopped off bits of their feet to make them fit into the glass slipper.

The evil queen in Snow White was forced to wear burning-hot iron shoes and dance until she died.

When the sorceress learned that Rapunzel was going to run away with her handsome prince, she cut off Rapunzel’s hair, lured the prince to the tower and pushed him from the window, blinding him as he fell on thorns.
