More airlines ban popular travel gadget being used on flights

EVEN more airlines are introducing strict rules on what can be taken and used onboard during a flight.

Earlier this month, Korean airline Air Busan banned passengers from having power banks in their hand luggage after a huge fire broke out onboard.

While no-one was killed in the accident, the plane was too badly damaged and was taken out of commission, with new rules meaning all power banks must be on your person.

And a number of other airlines have since followed in their footsteps.

From March 1, Eva Air passengers will no longer be able to use power banks onboard.

Instead passengers are being urged to use the onboard power outlets which have both AC and USB-A ports.

A statemetn read: “Effective March 1, 2025, to ensure flight safety, the use and charging of power banks nd spare lithium batteries will be prohibited throughout the flight.

“Please note that power banks and spare lithium batteries are prohibited in checked baggage. They must be carried in your carry-on baggage and properly stored to prevent compression or damage.”

China Airlines is also introducing the same rule from March 1.

Other airlines like Starlux Airlines and Tigerair have already banned passengers from using them onboard, although they can still be taken in hand luggage.

UK airlines are yet to follow suit, with most carriers still allowing them in hand luggage and used on the flight.

For example, Ryanair‘s rules explain: “Customers can carry a maximum of two spare lithium ion batteries in carry-on baggage and these must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.”

However, power banks are not allowed in checked luggage, due to the risk of them catching on fire.

Retired engineering professor Lo Kok-Keung warned of the dangers of having them onboard if they are damaged inside or badly made.

They told South China Morning Post: “If it creates a short circuit it can create a high temperature and burn the internal materials and create a fire which can burn clothing in the baggage.”

Back in 2023, a taxiing plane in Taiwan was force to return after a USB power bank caught on fire, filling the plane with smoke.

Also that year, two passengers were injured onboard a Scoot flight from Singapore to Taipei after a power bank exploded.

And last year, a fire broke out in the overhead lockers on an Asiana Airlines flight.

Passengers are advised to keep them on their person at all times to reduce the risk of them catching fire.

Another gadget flight risk is passengers dropping phones down the side of a seat.

While this may not sound dangerous, experts have warned that the phones could set fire or explode if the phones are caught in the seat recline mechanism.

Here are some other items that are banned on flights.

Its last series suffered abysmal ratings with fans outraged by the BBC shoehorning wokery into storylines.

The Sun revealed that Ncuti is poised to quit the sci-fi drama as crew claim to have been laid off.

Bosses at the Beeb are said to be holding off making a decision on its future until the second series.

And now they’ve confirmed it will air on April 12th with a global debut on the BBC and Disney+.

They also revealed actor Alan Cumming will star in the second episode of the new run.

He’ll play a guest role, playing the voice of ‘Mr Ring-a-Ding’.

The character is a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally.

But after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding finally sees the real world beyond the screen, which results in terrifying consequences.

Speaking about Alan’s guest role, showrunner Russel T Davies said it was an ‘honour’ to welcome him to the franchise.

He said: “Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun.

“He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS.”

Alongside Ncuti as the Doctor is Varada Sethu as Belinda Chandra and Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.

Irish people told cut hedge before Saturday – everything to know about rule & why you need to ask neighbour’s permission

IRISH people are being urged to cut their hedges before this weekend or they will need to wait until September for another chance.

Ireland has strict rules on when hedges can be cut in order to protect wildlife, such as birds who make their nests in hedges to raise their young.

Other species that make homes in hedges include owls, hedgehogs, badgers, stoats and butterflies.

And hedgerows also provide other benefits such as crop protection, noise control and flood control.

Due to their importance, from March 1 until August 31 it is illegal to cut hedges in Ireland.

This also includes grubbing, burning and destroying.

There are some varying rules for businesses, landowners and the public and in some specific cases hedges may be cut within the March to August window.

This includes if you are cutting, felling, lopping, trimming or removing a tree, shrub, hedge or other vegetation on you land to prevent it being a hazard to people using a public road.

You may also cut hedges while clearing vegetation during road or construction works, or while developing or preparing building sites.

It also includes destroying any vegetation growing on or in a hedge or ditch during the ordinary course of farming or forestry.

However, any hedge cutting outside these situations is illegal and should be reported.

Illegal hedge cutting can be reported to your local Garda station or your local National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) office.

You should make note of the time and date the illegal cutting took place and record the registration plate of any vehicles involved.

You are permitted to cut hedges on your own property within the dates outlined.

WHEN IS PERMISSION NEEDED?

However, there are cases where you will need to ask your neighbour’s permission.

If the hedge is a boundary line between your land and your neighbour’s, then the hedge is the property of both parties.

This means you will need to ask for permission from the neighbour before any hedge cutting takes place.

The same applies to any trees that are a boundary.

If branches are hanging down into your property you are entitled to cut them.

However, it is advised not to do so without discussing with your neighbour first to avoid any disagreements.

You must also make sure that what you plan to cut down is not subject to a tree preservation order.

You can check this with the local authority.
