Michelin-starred chef who worked with Marco Pierre White announces closure of top restaurant after 12 ‘glorious’ years

A MICHELIN-STARRED chef who worked with TV chef Marco Pierre White has announced the shock closure of her top restaurant.

After 12 years, the head chef finally revealed “with a heavy heart” that her longstanding London restaurant will serve its last dish this Friday.

Marguerite Keogh, one of the most decorated female chefs in London, has shared online that her restaurant The Five Fields is closing.

Having worked under critically acclaimed chef Marco Pierre White, who also trained Gordon Ramsey, Marguerite was able to open a restaurant that quickly became successful.

She thanked all her loyal customers in the post as well as her suppliers for providing the team with the “finest ingredients and support.”

The Five Fields, in the heart of Chelsea – one of UK’s wealthiest areas, has now been part of the London hospitality scene for more than a decade.

In an emotional Instagram post, she wrote: ” It is with heavy hearts that after more than 12 years we will be closing our doors with the last service this Friday 28th February.

“We are incredibly grateful to all of our guests for their generous patronage and support over the years, as well as to our dedicated suppliers who have provided us with the finest ingredients and support.

“Most importantly, we would like to express our profound gratitude and appreciation to our exceptional team members, past and present, who have always been the driving force behind our successes.”

Chef Marguerite said despite being sad to let the Blacklands Terrace street restaurant go she is excited about projects to come.

“We are truly honoured to have been part of the hospitality community for the last dozen years and look forward to future projects,” the post continued.

“There are a few tables available between now and Friday and reservations can be made now via our website.”

The menu offered a range of modern British cuisines including artichoke with scallops and sunflower sauce or fallow deer with saddle and pickled parsnips.

With swanky decor and meticulously designed dishes, down to the last drizzle, the venue oozed luxury.

Since it opened in 2013, the Five Fields has won numerous awards including a Michelin Star, an appearance on the Sunday Times top 100 Restaurants in the UK, and a mention in AA’s ‘Wine list of the year’.

Devastated customers were gutted to see the restaurant go, and diners took to social media to share their condolences with Marguerite and her staff.

One wrote: “So sad for you all but bigger and better things await.

Another upset customer added: “So sad!”

A third diner responded: “OMG so sorry to hear this.”

The Five Fields isn’t the only restaurant closing, as hundreds other UK venues face struggles.

Masterchef star Tom Kitchin announced the closure of Michelin-hailed Kora in January.

Kitchin said the restaurant has faced a challenging “current economic climate” which led him to close – something he described as a “difficult decision.”

Manchester-based restaurateur Michael Clay said it was “impossible for us to make money anymore” with Covid-19 restrictions as he shut his pizzeria Dokes.

Staff was sad to share that the Italian-style venue would be shutting this month, saying: “Try as we might, it’s just not been possible for us to make the money required.”

Hundreds of venues have been hit by an array of financial burdens in the past few years.

Aside from the pandemic, and looming tax spikes, the cost of living crisis has led to fewer Brits splashing the cash.

Without as much disposable income, fewer customers pour money into hospitality making it difficult to sustain.

It was revealed that six pubs were shut every week last year as they were hit by rising business costs.

What is happening to the hospitality industry?

By Laura McGuire, consumer reporter

MANY Food and drink chains have been struggling in recently as the cost of living has led to fewer people spending on eating out.

Businesses had been struggling to bounce back after the pandemic, only to be hit with soaring energy bills and inflation.

Multiple chains have been affected, resulting in big-name brands like Wetherspoons and Frankie & Benny’s closing branches.

Some chains have not survived, Byron Burger fell into administration last year, with owners saying it would result in the loss of over 200 jobs.

Pizza giant, Papa Johns is shutting down 43 of its stores soon.

Tasty, the owner of Wildwood, said it will shut sites as part of major restructuring plans.

Ryder Cup official issues grim price gouging warning to fans ahead of 2027 tournament at Adare Manor

DIRECTOR of Hospitality and Guest Experience at Ryder Cup Europe lan Evans has expressed a major concern for the 2027 edition of the famous tournament.

The 2027 biennial edition is set to take place at Limerick’s Adare Manor after this year’s event at Bethpage Black in New York, which has draw criticism for its ticket prices.

But Ian Evans has expressed serious concern over the escalating hotel rates in Limerick ahead of the Adare Manor team event between Europe and the USA.

The 2023 Ryder Cup generated an estimated €262 million in economic activity at Marco Simone in Rome.

Speaking at the Irish Hotels Federation conference in Killarney, Evans admitted that he anticipated a hike in room prices in surrounding areas due to Adare hosting the event.

He stated: “It has surprised us a little just how elevated some of the rates that we are getting.

“We will be focusing very heavily on fan experience. Our ticket prices will match ticket prices for major sporting events.

“They will not be the $750 that they are in New York next year, but they will match what you would expect to pay for a 10-hour event,” Mr Evans continued.

“But if you are driving a very high rate for your properties, you need to also have one eye on the guest experience as well.

“It’s a representation of Ireland, and it’s a representation of the event itself.”

But he says the current rates have surpassed expectations as he raised serious concern for hoteliers.

He emphasised the importance of aligning guest experiences with these premium charges, cautioning guests against benchmarking prices solely against previous Ryder Cup events in cities like Rome or New York, where unique factors influence pricing.

In response to the anticipated influx of visitors, local accommodations are already advertising rentals.

A newly built three-bedroom home in Castletroy, Limerick, is listed for an insane €28,000 during the event, while a five bedroom house in Tipperary is set at €60,000.

He went on to urge the Irish hospitality sector to ensure that the quality of service and overall guest experience justify the premium pricing associated with such high-profile events.

“Our message to hotels is if that’s the rate you think you can get, fine. But make sure the experience matches the rate.

“I know there is a lot of checking of historical rates, but I would caution against that.

“Rome had 75,000 hotel rooms in the city available in 2023 and drives high rates consistently throughout all 12 months of the year.

“It’s the same in New York. The Ryder Cup will be taking place at the same week as the UN General Assembly, so the rates in New York are already distorted.

The 2027 Ryder Cup is scheduled for September at Adare Manor in County Limerick will draw significant international attention.

The exclusive J.P. McManus Pro-Am course has been totally renovated for the tournament.

‘We’ll survive’ – Brian O’Driscoll puts fans minds at ease with verdict on possible Garry Ringrose ban ahead of hearing

BRIAN O’DRISCOLL believes Ireland can survive if Garry Ringrose cops a ban.

Ringrose was initially given a yellow card for his head collision with Ben Thomas of Wales which was upgraded to red by the TMO.

A disciplinary hearing on Thursday morning will decide whether further punishment is required.

But, with Bundee Aki starring off the bench, and Robbie Henshaw there too, O’Driscoll is not too concerned about the prospect of Ringrose being unavailable to face France on Saturday week.

O’Driscoll said: “I’m a huge Garry Ringrose fan but it is such a luxury to have three quality centres of that level. It is unusual for us to have all three of them fit. One of them is nearly always out.

“Bundee comes on and does brilliantly the last day. We said that about Garry against Scotland – one of our best attacking players. Robbie now is the common denominator all of a sudden and I thought he did really well.

“I can’t tell you hard it would have been, particularly defending at the setpiece as the only centre. And his capacity to read short and pout the back is as good as Garry’s. So we are in a very lucky position.

“OK, we lose creativity with Garry and he had a great game against France two years ago when he scored the all-important try at the end. But we’ll survive and that is the strength of this team.

“It’s not overly-reliant on one player and that is the difference between now and Ireland teams of the past when you would lose one player and go, ‘oh no’. That’s not really the case with this current crop, maybe save for Andrew Porter.”

And O’Driscoll does not expect the Leinster man to make drastic changes to his tackle technique if he is landed with a suspension.

He said: “When you think about the big concussion he got in Scotland a few years ago, it was significant and concerning but it hasn’t short-changed him on getting after those hits. It’s just his way.

“He has a great propensity to read plays, it’s his first red card at 30-years-of age, he got one wrong and in the modern age lots of players are going to get one wrong.

“Almost all players across the board are going to pick up a red card during their career, whereas in my career they were hard to come by.

“It’s much easier to pick one up now.

“Twenty minute red card, does it discourage you from going into those hits? Probably not.

“I wasn’t a fan of it but I’m coming around to it and that’s not just because of what happened with Garry because if you mistime something, it’s hundreds of a second and a reaction… when you accelerate hard, you accelerate in your fastest position which is upright – not in a crouch position – and then sometimes your acceleration gets you there too quickly to make that decision.

“It’s so hard, hundreds or thousands of a second to make a decision, personally I think it was just a red card. Not an ‘oh my god, red’, but just about.

“It will be interesting to see what happens at his hearing, but he’s gotten so many right that to get one wrong doesn’t mean you go back and reinvent yourself.

“Maybe he’ll pull it back for a few games and build confidence, get the quality back in again and then go back to rebuilding that part of your game again.”
