Rory McIlroy ended my golf career when he broke me at the US Open – I thought I wasn’t good enough from that day onwards

PADRAIG HARRINGTON has revealed how his career was “broken” by Rory McIlroy.

The three-time major winner went into the 2011 US Open brimming with confidence as one of the favourites.

But Harrington ended up being blown away by a then 21-year-old McIlroy’s record breaking performance.

The Northern Irishman clinched his first major by finishing on a staggering 16 under par with the lowest 72-hole score in tournament history.

McIlroy‘s next level display left Harrington worrying that his time at the top was over.

He told the Cookie Jar Golf Podcast: “Rory broke me in 2011.

“He broke everyone but forget that. I was the best player – that’s what I believed.

“I’ve gone into Congressional, I played a practice round with Adam on Wednesday and he has then done an interview and told everybody to go home.

“He says, ‘you might as well all go home because Padraig Harrington is winning it’.

“I am in my head the best player. I have won three majors recently and I am in great form. I prepared right.

“I go into this tournament and Rory does something that I can’t compete with.

“Wipes the floor with everyone. We are all the same. He’s just blown us all away.

“That’s OK if I thought I could get better, that’s fine. When Tiger Woods was doing that in the early 2000s, I was only on my way up.

“This is me at my best and I don’t think I can compete with him.

“You name every player who has hit a peak. 2008, I was not looking over my shoulder, I was only concerned about me.

“2011 onwards, I’m now thinking I’m not good enough.”

Harrington added on social media: “It fits the mould for nearly all golfers.

“They believe they have all the game to win, then a new kid arrives and they feel they have to be a different version of themselves to win now. Tiger did this to so many in the late 90s.”

McIlroy has gone on to win four major titles, with his last coming in 2014.

Inside Rory McIlroy's whirlwind love life

RORY MCILROY enjoyed a high-profile romance with former tennis world number one Caroline Wozniacki before their split in 2014.

The following year, the golf ace began dating Erica Stoll, who he had first met on the PGA Tour in 2011.

Erica often interacted with players through her role as the PGA’s manager of championship volunteer operations.

She even prevented McIlroy from missing his tee time at the 2012 Ryder Cup after some confusion over the time zone.

The incident began a firm friendship between the pair, four years before their relationship turned romantic.

McIlroy and Erica were spotted on a string of dates in Rochester, New York, in the early days of their relationship.

Just eight months later, the couple got engaged in Paris and walked down the aisle at Ashford Castle in Ireland in 2017.

The pair then welcomed daughter Poppy into the world three years later.

Throughout their time together, McIlroy and Erica have kept their relationship to themselves, with the golfer keen to protect his family from the cameras during filming of Netflix’s Full Swing documentary series.

However, after seven years of marriage, McIlroy filed for divorce from Erica.

The reasons for the divorce were not disclosed, but the Northern Irishman submitted documents to a court in Florida.

However, a few weeks later, performed a U-turn on their decision to divorce.

McIlroy told the outlet: “Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

Fashion fans are going wild for an M&S three-piece suit in this season’s must-have colour butter yellow

British retailer Marks & Spencer are ahead of the trends once again and fashion fans are swooning over their new three-piece suit.

Of course, it comes in the colour butter yellow.

The incredible suit, which is bought as separates, features wide-leg suit trousers, a long-line waistcoat and a collarless blazer.

Each of the pieces can be dressed up or down or worn together for a statement look.

Prices start at £39.50 for the trousers, which come in short, regular or long lengths and sizes 6 to 24.

The longline waistcoat, which is perfect for wearing with denim jeans as well as the suit, is £45 and also comes in an inclusive size range.

Next is the collarless blazer which makes the perfect lightweight jacket for spring and is priced at £69.

M&S bosses say the three-piece set has a wool-look fabric and is effortlessly tailored.

Fashion fans online have been raving about the set, including Hannah Townsend and Liz Alexander.

Liz who is a size 16 fashion influencer, tried the suit on in her local M&S and was clearly obsessed with the set as she couldn’t stop beaming with it on.

Hannah was also in love with the set, adding: “Finally, I saw the three-piece butter yellow suit of dreams. And here’s where things get serious. Okay?

“Because I tried on the waistcoat and I thought we’re onto something here. But we were only a third of the way through the trial and I thought we hit one home run, but could we hit two in a row?

“The jacket went on and things went from good to great. But I feared I’d left the worst until last and we’d fall at the trouser hurdle.

“But the only thing that fell was me in love with this suit.”

The butter yellow trend

The sun's fashion Editor, Clemmie Fieldsend says:

BUTTER yellow crept into the fashion fold last spring, but this year it’s back and bigger than ever.

High street brands, much like M&S, have been heavily influenced by high end designers like Chloe and Chanel – to name but a few.

The bright, yet subtle colour, is a warm and lifting hue for all skin tones.

Wear separates with your go-to denim or other new-season favourite, suede.

Or for optimum style points wear the look head-to-toe.

Colour drenching is the foolproof way to look stylish and doing it in yellow is the perfect look for spring.

People were quick to take to the comments of Hannah’s video obsessed with the new suit.

One person wrote: “Omg the waistcoat and trousers!!”

Another commented: “Wow this is gorgeous.”

“I NEED IT,” penned a third.

Meanwhile, viewers of Liv’s try-on video were also fans of the set, a fourth said: “Stunning! M&S have soooo many gems.”

“You look so beautiful!” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “So flattering.”

Man Utd have splurged £1.6BILLION on transfers since Sir Alex Ferguson left as Big Six’s eye-watering spends revealed

MANCHESTER UNITED have splurged a staggering £1.6billion on transfers since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

And despite their enormous outlay, they have never felt so far away from competing for the Premier League title.

Ruben Amorim‘s lowly flops are 15th in the Prem table, with the Portuguese even suggesting that his players are partially to blame for mass job cuts behind the scenes at Old Trafford.

Throughout the post-Ferguson era, the Red Devils have attempted to throw money at their problems – forking out huge transfer fees and wages every summer.

But having never previously addressed their football structure behind the scenes, United’s scatter-gun strategy has consistently yielded disastrous results.

Amorim’s current crop includes £60m Casemiro, £64m Rasmus Hojlund, £55m Mason Mount and £85m Harry Maguire, to name just a few.

Following a decent first season, Casemiro’s form has dropped off a cliff, yet United remain liable for his eye-watering £350,000 a week salary until June 2026.

Hojlund, meanwhile, has managed just two Premier League goals this season, and Mount just 237 minutes of game time amid constant injury woes.

Maguire’s form has also fluctuated wildly, with the Red Devils having previously tried to flog him to West Ham.

United misfits Antony and Jadon Sancho are both out on loan, having cost nearly £160m in transfer fees and £450,000 per week in wages between them.

Liverpool and Arsenal, the Premier League’s top two, have spent £1.12bn and £1.26bn on transfer fees since Ferguson’s retirement – significantly less than Man Utd.

Yet they find themselves streets ahead, despite also having smaller wage bills than the Red Devils, per FBref.

Only Manchester City, winners of six of the last seven Prem titles, have a higher wage bill than United.

Pep Guardiola’s men have spent £1.74bn since Fergie’s United departure, but have the silverware to show for it.

In the same period Chelsea, who judging by last night’s fan protests have problems of their own, have spent £2.37bn on transfers, while Tottenham have forked out £1.21bn.

United’s current crop includes plenty of high-profile flops, but such a phenomenon is nothing new.

Illustration of Man Utd's spending since 2013, totaling £1.59 billion.

A then-world record £89m was spent on Paul Pogba, £35m on Donny van de Beek, £75m on Romelu Lukaku, £59.7m on Angel Di Maria…

The list could go on and on.

In the first post-Ferguson season, United chiefs allowed David Moyes £65m to spend on Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata.

Since that campaign, the Red Devils have only spent less than £119m in a season twice – forking out an average of £140m on new players per year.

Since his arrival 12 months ago, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has been on a controversial cost-cutting drive that has seen hundreds lose their jobs – but the football side of the business continues to cost fortunes without the returns to show for it.

It has been 12 years since Man Utd’s last Premier League title and if they do not improve their recruitment, it is hard to see when their next one will come.

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.
