Major driving law change could force millions of Brits to handover private information – what it means for you

A HUGE driving law change might leave millions of Brits forced to hand over private information.

A new Bill proposed by Labour will share every driver’s personal information from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) with the police.

There are fears photographs on driving licences will be used for a large facial recognition database[/caption]

The database would allow cops to cross reference footage with the 50million people with driving licences[/caption]

Privacy campaign groups raised concerns that the government will then have access to a huge facial recognition database – expanded by driving licence photographs.

The Crime and Policing Bill will make data from 50million motorists available to use in police investigations.

This will include the names, addresses, birthdays and images of any driver with a licence or a provisional.

Civil liberties campaign group Big Brother Watch has blasted the plans claiming this will be a complete invasion of privacy and has highlighted the risks associated with facial recognition.

The senior advocacy officer at Big Brother Watch Madeleine Stone said: “It’s disturbing to see the Government is reheating the Conservatives’ abandoned plans that most threaten privacy rights, including granting all police forces access to our driving licence photos, opening the door to the creation of a massive facial recognition database.

The Bill allows the Government to grant police officers extraordinary powers to identify and track anyone with a driving licence, at the click of a button.

“Not only would this be an unprecedented breach of privacy, but would also put innocent citizens at risk of misidentifications and injustice.”

With access to a name and corresponding image, governing bodies would be able to use facial recognition to assist with identifying individuals from footage.

It also means cops could see endorsements, convictions, and any medical information that affects driving ability.

The Tories proposed a similar Bill, allowing the police force to check CCTV retrospectively to identify suspected criminals, but they dropped it.

It disappeared after running out of time before former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak‘s snap election but has now re-entered discussions.

The policing minister at the time Chris Philp claimed it would be beneficial when tracking down those involved in serious crimes.

For suspected criminals who are not already on the force’s databases, having access to driving licences might identify murderers, rapists and violent individuals.

While this is true, and cops have made arrests using this type of technology, access to the DVLA will expand it tenfold.

In December, 540 people who were suspected of a range of crimes, from shoplifting to rape, were apprehended using these systems.

DVLA client information would add 50milion users to this database, allowing it to be far more accurate and phenomenally wide-reaching.

Currently, cops are not allowed to access any of the DVLA’s data unless they’re looking into a road-related offence.

If the Bill gets passed, the data can be used to assist with any investigation – whether it’s car-related or not.

Facial recognition fears are growing as Big Brother Watch released a report in February 2022 stating the UK is one of the most surveilled countries in the world.

With an estimated 6million CCTV cameras across the nation, the report suggests there is one camera for every 10 citizens.

In the report, the campaign group writes: “London has become the most surveilled city outside of China, and has even more cameras per person than Beijing.”

If the Bill passes, footage from these cameras – provided they are government-owned, submitted to the police, or requested – can be cross-checked with every UK driving licence.

The Home Office has denied the Bill will be used in this way and claims if it goes through it will be used in relation to policing.

It has not detailed how the information from DVLA would be used but claims facial recognition wouldn’t be impacted.

The Home Office states: “The Secretary of State may in accordance with this section make driver licensing information available for use by authorised persons for purposes relating to policing or law enforcement.”

The late Johnson – real name Wayde Douglas Bowles – made WWE history with Tony Atlas in 1983 when they became the first black titleholders in the promotion’s history by capturing the tag team titles.

The Rock – real name Dwayne Johnson – recently shared a WWE-produced tribute to his dad on his Instagram page in honour of Black History Month.

And he couldn’t help but shed a tear when recapping the impact his late father had not only on himself but other black wrestlers around the globe.

He said: “When I saw the picture, the reason it moved me so much.

“Because it was just this amazing picture as they had just won the tag team titles, him and Tony Atlas.

“They became the first black tag team champions in the history of the WWE.

“In that moment there was just this unbridled joy and pride that my dad had, I saw it on his face.

“I thought, ‘Man, I would have loved to have, I would love to have given him a hug and just say I’m proud of you’ and you did it.”

“And hardened by all the different kind of beatings life gave him.

“But I know he ALWAYS appreciated (and smiled!) receiving ‘his flowers’ for all the challenges he overcame and road he paved for all of us of colour, and all of us of ANY colour.

“I get emotional in moments like this because it’s the great reminder to always be as present as possible with your loved ones.

“Because we just never know what’s around the corner and when, just like that — they’re gone.

“My old man wasn’t a big ‘I love you’ guy, but he would always say three things to me as a kid that always stuck with me.

“A day without pain, is like a day without sunshine.

“Respect is given when it’s earned, so go out and earn it. The show must go on.

“Love you, dad. See you down the road and thank you for paving the way.”

‘Vape tongue’ cases on steep rise, warns expert – plus 7 other ways vaping can impact your oral health

A DENTIST has warned of a little-known phenomenon that’s emerging due to vaping – something known as ‘vape tongue’.

While vaping has been hailed an effective tool to help people quit smoking, excessive use could trigger the condition that results in temporary loss of taste.

Vaping can impact your teeth and gums, leading to problems like gum disease and tooth decay[/caption]

A high intake of nicotine from vaping, combined with dry mouth, contributes to a reduced ability to taste food, warns Dr Smita Mehra, Principal Dentist at The Neem Tree Dental Practice.

And if you find yourself experiencing vape tongue, it’s essential to cut down on vaping and maintain excellent oral hygiene, said Dr Smita.

She advised: “To alleviate symptoms, drink water – since the condition is linked to dehydration, staying fully hydrated is crucial.

“Also clean your mouth – when brushing your teeth, make sure to clean your tongue using either the bristles of your toothbrush or a tongue scraper.”

When we talk about the impact of smoking on our health, often the dangers tend to focus on the impact on the lungs, heart, and even skin.

Yet, what smokers and vapers often fail to recognise is that the associated risks of such habits start in their mouths, said Dr Smita.

She added: “Tobacco products, no matter how they are ingested, can have a variety of detrimental and irreversible effects on oral health.”

Vape tongue isn’t the only mouth issue that can arise from regular vaping.

Dr Smita shares the other ways tobacco products like vapes can impact your oral health.

Impact your teeth and gums

First and foremost, tobacco products containing nicotine, like cigarettes and vapes, can have a detrimental effect on your teeth and gums that can leave your mouth in poor shape, said Dr Smita.

She explained: “This is because tobacco products are filled with toxic chemicals that seep into your gums, traumatising and severely affecting the gums and even the dental bone in which your teeth sit.

“This leaves the mouth more vulnerable to infection, which is often one of the main contributors to gum disease.

“Plaque buildup from tobacco can also turn into tartar, which can cause your gums to inflame and recede, exposing the roots of your teeth, and leading to chronic problems like tooth and bone loss.

“This can lead to expensive solutions to replace missing teeth, like implants, bridges or dentures.

“Nothing is as good as keeping your own natural teeth and gums healthy.”

Increases your risk of oral cancer

Most people are aware that smoking or using tobacco products increases your chances of lung cancer.

But it can also put you at risk of mouth/oral cancer, said Dr Smita.

She warned: “Approximately 17 per cent of oral cancers in the UK are linked to smoking.

“When you smoke or use vapes, you risk severely damaging not only your heart and lungs, but also your mouth, tongue, and lips too.

“This is because the harmful chemicals in tobacco products damage the cells in the mouth.

“Oral cancer can have serious consequences beyond your mouth and teeth, such as disfigurement, tooth loss, and death.”

Tooth decay becomes a problem

Nicotine can have severe effects on tooth decay – perhaps something that isn’t as well known, said Dr Smita.

She advised: “When you smoke, the chemicals in tobacco mix with your saliva, causing its PH levels to drop, and become less effective at neutralising acids.

“As a result, this creates the perfect environment for tooth decay – because the bacteria in your mouth can more easily damage the enamel on your teeth.

“Tooth decay is extremely serious as it can lead to problems such as cavities, tooth loss and even more serious health problems in the future.”

Damage implants and surgery

Though we all know smoking and the harmful chemicals in tobacco products can impact our health, what some people may not know is that it can also have an impact on recovery from oral surgery.

Dr Smita said: “Toxic chemicals in tobacco products can reduce blood flow to the gums, making it much harder for your mouth to fully recover after dental surgery.

“Not only that, but it can also lead to implant failure, because the titanium post cannot fuse with the bone properly, as well as causing post-surgery problems like infections and longer recovery times.

“Implants need healthy bones to remain sturdy and successful.”

Causes bad breath

One of the most obvious ways smoking and tobacco products impact your oral health is by causing bad breath, also known as halitosis, said Dr Smita.

She added: “While vapes have tried to combat this issue by masking the smell with fruity or menthol flavours, the harmful chemicals in tobacco inherently change the chemistry in your mouth, leading to the build-up of sulphur, which has a consistently bad smell.”

Vaping may also be the cause of your halitosis[/caption]

Reduces your mouth’s natural defences

Tobacco products harm your oral health by breaking down your mouth’s natural defences, and when you smoke or vape, it slows down saliva production in the mouth, said Dr Smita.

She recommended: “As salvia is one of your mouth’s main shields against bacteria from food and drink, without it, you are much more vulnerable to infection and gum disease.”

Increases dry mouth and tooth sensitivity

Smoking can cause you to experience a dry mouth or have increased tooth sensitivity.

This is because tobacco products cause your salivary glands to not produce enough saliva, said Dr Smita.

She added: “Though this might not seem that serious, when your mouth is dry, it can’t wash away bacteria properly, making you more prone to tooth decay and cavities.

“Without saliva production, your mouth can’t break down acids as well, making your teeth much more sensitive.”

How to quit tobacco products and protect your teeth

The good news is, if you quit smoking or stop using tobacco products, you can increase your chances of looking after your oral health.

Dr Smita recommends plenty of ways to do this:

  • Using gum lozenges or patches to replace nicotine.
  • You can join a group that can offer advice and support when quitting, and encourage you to keep going if you experience any moments of weakness.
  • There are also plenty of apps, websites, and forums to help you quit and track progress.
  • Your dentist can also be a big help when trying to quit smoking, as they can give you advice to fit your individual needs.

The 4 horrifying things that can happen to your body after vaping

VAPES were once hailed as miracle devices to help adults ditch cigarettes.

But while the devices don’t carry the same risks as tobacco, experts have warned that vaping might not be so harmless after all.

Here are five ways vaping could damage young users bodies:

1. It could slow down brain development

Vaping nicotine can permanently affect brain development in people under the age of 25, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

It said that nicotine consumed during teenage years can harm the parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control, as well as increase the risk of addiction.

2. It could lead to tooth decay

Dr Michael Heffernan, a dentist at The Wessex Dental Specialist Care, said most vapes contain dangerous chemical that can harm your teeth and lead to decay.

Puffing on the devices could also lead to mouth dryness, creating an environment in which harmful bacteria can grow.

3. It could damage heart health

However, some of the chemicals found in vapes can be damaging to the heart, with the American Heart Association (AHA) stating that vaping is “as harmful to the body’s cardiovascular systems as cigarettes”.

4. It could cause lung disease

Vaping from a young age could leave children with breathing difficulties, with paediatric respiratory consultant Dr Mike McKean saying he’d seen reports of people developing lung disease related to vaping.

Researchers from the US also found that young people who vape are more at risk of bronchitis, inflammation of the airways, and shortness of breath.

But he was at the centre of a bizarre off-the-ball incident as he checked players’ registrations on the pitch.

Kahler said in his report that he had been attacked by one of the FC Taxi players’ children.

The lower-league fixture in Duisburg, Germany was called off with the ref left in agonising pain.

He wrote: “While I was checking the FC Taxi players’ ID, a small child was doing warm-up exercises alongside the players.

“He came closer and closer to me, then suddenly – to my complete surprise – gave me a sharp bite in my left testicle.

“I did not start the game, because of the pain I was in and the situation.

“It was the child of one of the FC Taxi players who was to blame.”

FC Taxi had previously shown bite of a different kind, climbing to third in the regional Kreisliga C table.

The division is the equivalent of the eighth tier in Germany.

The clash between FC Taxi II and Rot-Weiss Mulheim III will be rescheduled for later in the season.

Iconic Agatha Christie detective to return to screens in new reboot – 12 years after last episode

AN iconic Agatha Christie detective is to make a surprise comeback after 12 years away.

Fans of Miss Marple are in luck as writer Agatha’s great-grandson James Pritchard has confessed that a new project based around the detective is in the works after being “years” in the making.

Miss Marple has long been popular in the Agatha Christie universe[/caption]

The last edition of Miss Marple aired in 2013 but now it appears something involving the icon is looming once again.

In a new interview, James said: “I couldn’t be more excited.

“I’ve been trying to get something for Miss Marple off the ground for a very long time.

“For good reasons, Poirot has stolen her limelight since time began.”

He continued to RadioTimes: “I re-read all the Marple stories five years ago and I’d forgotten how good they were.

“Poirot has perhaps three or four of the all-time great Agatha Christies, but if you did a top 10, you’d get at least two or three Marples in there. She’s underestimated.”

James didn’t divulge any further details on what fans could expect but it seems clear that Miss Marple is clearly his current focus.

Speaking about his great-grandmother Agatha, James confessed: “She was an extremely interesting woman, because part of her was very shy and retiring, but I think she was also a forceful person.

“She would claim not to have been a feminist, but she absolutely thought she was as powerful as any man who she came across. And that’s the kind of woman she wrote about.”

Miss Marple was last portrayed by both Geraldine McEwan and Julia McKenzie in an ITV series based around the character.

Helen Hayes also took on the role for two American-based movies as well as Joan Hickson in the classic 1980s BBC series.

My hubby had a vasectomy booked before we found out we’re expecting a 5th baby – trolls say we’re ‘unbelievably selfish’

A COUPLE have been labelled “unbelievably selfish” by trolls after announcing they’re expecting their fifth baby.

Nicole and Sam Austin have made a name for themselves on social media in recent months, after opening up about living in a council house and their struggle to keep it clean and tidy.

The mum-of-four also recently explained she’d referred herself to social services because of how much she’s been struggling.

However, in their latest TikTok video, the pair announced their expecting another baby.

They explained that Sam had actually been booked in for a vasectomy when they found out Nicole was pregnant, but she insisted he’ll still be going ahead with the snip despite her pregnancy.

“We have a secret. One of us is pregnant. Can you guess who?” Nicole joked at the beginning of the video.

She then cradled her growing bump as she said: “Surprise! We are expecting baby Austin number five.

“Due in the beginning of September, we are expecting another gorgeous little baby!”

Nicole went on to insist they are “not naive” as to how “stupid” they had been to fall pregnant, especially as they’d decided around Christmas time that they were “done with children”.

So Sam went ahead and booked the snip.

However, before that appointment, Nicole “kept getting ill constantly throughout December”.

So, just before Christmas, she took a pregnancy test – which was negative.

She did another test around New Year’s Day, which was once again “clear as day negative”.

Nicole added there was only one date they could have conceived on – Sam’s birthday – so she thought they were “in the clear”.

And it wasn’t until she went for an ultrasound related to her polycystic ovaries that she was told she was pregnant.

“It came as such a shock,” she sighed.

“And Sam and I clearly know we’re not in the best situation right now.

“And trust me, Sam’s still booked in for that vasectomy!”

Sharing the video on TikTok, Nicole wrote in the caption: “Surprise!

“I know we are probably gonna get hate for this however I’m not gonna be able to hide it with hoodies forever.

“Let’s get some support, get our lives on track, save to move house and enjoy this new chapter.”

But, as predicted, the comments section was almost immediately filled with people trolling the pair for their pregnancy announcement.

“This is unbelievably selfish,” one raged.

“She says she’s struggling already – another kid isn’t gonna help no matter what way you look at it,” another said.

“Are you actually serious!? A tiny 2 bed house with 2 adults & 5 kids in it!?” a third commented.

“Those kids need removing from your care.

“This is actually disgusting to hear!”

“It’s scary isn’t it,” someone else agreed.

“She posted saying they had no money the other day. The house is neglected, now another baby.

“Why aren’t social services taking action?”

As someone called them “irresponsible”, another labelled them a “typical council estate family” – accusing them of “having baby after baby when they can’t even afford to feed one child without the taxpayer’s money”.

“We had to stop at two – there’s no way we could afford more!!” someone else wrote.

£I have everything from Archie, I breastfeed all my children so don’t buy formula, it doesn’t have to be a huge expense,” Nicole insisted.

“Not to sound awful but you shouldn’t really have children till you financially support them and provide them with a clean place to live!” another added.

“Well we didn’t plan it and I couldn’t bring myself to have an abortion so here we are…” Nicole replied.

“I had sympathy for you until you now added another child into this over crowded mix,” someone else sighed.

To which Nicole responded: “We are not naive to the fact that this is not a good move however, it’s happened.”
