Urgent warning as D&V bug continues to grip NHS – as cases soar 150% on last year

HEALTH bosses have issued an urgent warning over a grim diarrhoea and vomiting bug, as case numbers edge toward a record high.

Patients with the illness are flooding the NHS, with the number of people hospitalised for it nearly 150 per cent higher than last year, figures show.

Graph showing reported norovirus cases in England.
UKHSA predicted there may be a second way of norovirus as cases continue to surge

There were an average of 1,134 patients a day in hospital with norovirus last week, down slightly from the 1,160 seen the previous week.

But that’s still over double the amount of patients admitted to hospital in the same period last year (470).

Prof Sir Stephen Powis, national medical director of NHS England, said: “While it is good news norovirus cases dropped, they remain extremely close to the all-time high reported last week so we can be under no illusions about the continued pressure staff are still facing.

“Hospitals remain close to capacity in part because of seasonal illnesses, and it is vital that people do everything they can to reduce the spread of what can be a deeply unpleasant illness.”

Norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting bug, is a very contagious stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as a high temperature, headache, tummy pain, and body aches.

Just last week, health bosses warned cases were “way above” what we usually see in the UK at this time of year.

Figures released by UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) this week showed norovirus cases continuing to surge across the country, with laboratory reports at the highest levels since the agency began tallying data on the bug in 2014.

In the two weeks between February 3 and 16, the number confirmed norovirus cases rose by 29.4 per cent.

UKHSA said they were 160 per cent higher that the number of cases usually seen in the same two-week period.

Hospitals and care homes were the hardest hit, with people aged 65 and over proving most vulnerable to infection.

Cases usually start to decline around this time of year as the weather gets warmer, but the health watchdog warned of potential second norovirus wave.

It said people who have already had the virus this winter could be at risk of getting it again, as new data showed a shift in the strains circulating.

While most cases this season have been caused by the GII.17 genotype, UKHSA said a different, but commonly seen genotype – GII.4 – is now increasing.

“While the GII.17 genotype remains dominant, accounting for 59 per cent of cases, its prevalence has dropped from 76 per cent since November,” UKHSA explained.

Illustration of six norovirus symptoms: feeling sick, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, high temperature, and aching arms and legs.

“Meanwhile, the GII.4 strain has seen a sharp rise, now representing 29 per cent of cases compared to just 10 per cent three months ago.”

This means that people who have already had norovirus this season may catch it again, as having one genotype does not fully protect against the other.

But UKHSA noted that neither strain seems to cause a more severe illness.

Amy Douglas, lead epidemiologist at UKHSA, said: “Norovirus levels are still exceptionally high and now with multiple genotypes spreading at the same time, people could end up getting infected more than once this season.

“We are seeing the biggest impacts in health and social care settings, such as hospitals and care homes.

“Symptoms of norovirus can be more severe in older adults, young children and those who are immunocompromised.”

UKHSA experts estimated that reported cases represent only a small fraction of actual infections, as there are 288 cases for every one reported to their national surveillance system.

This suggests there around there are 3 million cases in the UK each year.

‘Not out of winter woods’

Norovirus isn’t the only bug currently buffeting hospitals.

NHS figures showed that 95 per cent of adult beds were occupied last week, with a total of 96,807 patients in hospital each day.

The number of patients with Covid rose slightly on the week before – up 4 per cent to 1,027 from 984.

But the number of flu cases in hospital continued to fall with an average 1,656 patients in beds with flu last week, including 80 in critical care – down 5.7 per cent on the week before (1,755).

But are still delays in patient discharges so beds can be freed up – with almost one in seven beds taken up by patients who did not need to be there.

Health and Social Care Secretary, Wes Streeting, said: “These statistics show that we are still not out of the winter woods, and I want to thank all NHS staff for their hard work in the face of substantial pressures on the health service.”

How to protect yourself from norovirus

Prof Powis said: “To help stop the spread of norovirus, the medical advice is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water and avoid mixing with other people until you have not had symptoms for two days.

“While pressures on hospitals remains incredibly high, people should continue to use NHS services in the normal way – using 111 and 111 online if you need advice and support for health conditions, and only using 999 or attending A&E in life-threatening emergencies.”

“If you have diarrhoea and vomiting, please do not visit hospitals and care homes or return to work, school or nursery until 48 hours after your symptoms have stopped and don’t prepare food for others, as you can still pass on the virus during this time.”

Dr Douglas added: “Alcohol gels do not kill norovirus.

“Wash your hands with soapy warm water and clean surfaces with bleach-based products where possible to help stop infections from spreading.”

Norovirus: Key symptoms + how to protect yourself

The main symptoms or norovirus, according to the NHS, are:

  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Diarrhoea
  • Being sick (vomiting)

You may also have:

  • A high temperature
  • headache
  • Aching arms and legs

You can usually treat norovirus at home – the most important thing to do is rest and have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

As norovirus is easily spread it’s important to do what you can to prevent catching it.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends four things you can do to protect yourself.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially:

  • After using the toilet or changing nappies
  • Before eating, preparing, or handling food
  • Before giving yourself or someone else medicine

It’s important to be aware hand sanitisers don’t always work well against norovirus.

You can use them in addition to hand washing, but it shouldn’t be a substitution.

Before preparing and eating your food the CDC recommends the following:

  • Carefully wash fruits and vegetables well
  • Cook oysters and other shellfish thoroughly to an internal temperature of at least 63°C
  • Routinely clean and sanitise kitchen utensils, cutting boards, counters, and surfaces, especially after handling shellfish
  • Keep raw oysters away from ready-to-eat food in your shopping basket, refrigerator, and on cutting boards
  • Throw away food that might contain norovirus

Noroviruses are relatively resistant to heat and can survive temperatures as high as 63°C.

Quick steaming processes will not heat foods enough to kill noroviruses.

And be aware food contaminated with norovirus may look, smell, or taste normal.

After someone with norovirus vomits and has diarrhoea you should:

  • Wear rubber or disposable gloves and wipe the entire area with paper towels and throw them in a plastic trash bag
  • Disinfect the area as directed on the product label
  • Leave bleach disinfectant on the affected area for at least five minutes
  • Clean the entire area again with soap and hot water
  • Wash laundry, take out the trash, and wash your hands

An expert recently warned norovirus can spread via clothes.

Immediately remove and wash clothes or linens that may have vomit or poo on them.

When you do this:

  • Wear rubber or disposable gloves
  • Handle items carefully without shaking them
  • Wash the items with detergent and hot water at the maximum available cycle length and then machine dry them at the highest heat setting
  • Wash your hands after with soap and water

Coronation Street stars ‘terrified every day at work will be their last’ with new and old cast ‘divided’ over salaries

TENSIONS are running high at crisis-hit Coronation Street, with cast treating every day as their last after high-profile exits, job losses and schedule cuts.

One well-placed insider told The Sun: “A lot of them are terrified. You’ll find them whispering in small groups trying to find out the latest.”

Created by Tony Warren, the series was first broadcast on December 9th, 1960, and was produced by ITV Granada.
And Colson Smith, who stars as Craig Tinker, will also leave Weatherfield for good

Big names including Colson Smith, who plays Craig Tinker, and Daisy Midgeley actress Charlotte Jordan have been confirmed to be leaving this year.

Also bidding farewell to Weatherfield are Sue Cleaver – who has played Eileen Grimshaw for 25 years – and Yasmeen Nazir star Shelley King

And The Sun revealed earlier this month that Corrie episodes have been cut from six to five a week

Our source continued: “Some people are wondering whether it’s time to jump ship instead of sinking with Corrie.

“It’s a different situation entirely but the news that Neighbours will be axed again has made them realise anything is possible in the TV industry.

“Was the recent schedule cut just the beginning? That’s the question on everyone’s lips.”

The current Coronation Street cast is made up of soap legends who have been on the show for decades and fresh-faced stars hoping to use it as a springboard and emulate success enjoyed by the likes of Michelle Keegan and Suranne Jones

And some of the stars have been left reeling after hearing rumours particular members of the cast are being persuaded to stick around.

An insider said: “The divide among the cast is undeniable.

“Rumours are flying that bigger names are being offered new deals to stay, which has some of the younger actors feeling like they’re not part of bosses’ future plans for Corrie.

“Gone are the days that being a regular in a soap was seen as job security.

“Now many of them are preparing themselves to be jobbing actors again, which comes with concerns about how they’re going to pay the mortgage or support their families.”

Coronation Street is the longest-running soap in the world – having launched back in 1960 – and is a British staple, so it’s no surprise that news of 75 job cuts across it and Emmerdale has left both stars and viewers concerned for its future.

Even actors who made their name on the cobbles of Weatherfield have voiced fears the show is on its way out.

Charlie Lawson, who played Les Battersby from 1989 until his last appearance in 2018, said recently: “I’ll be surprised if we have Emmerdale, Corrie and EastEnders in ten years.”

Coronation Street 2025 exits

Sue Cleaver – Eileen Grimshaw

Confirming her exit, Sue told The Sun: “The door is still firmly open but as I reached my 60th year, I decided it was time to embrace change, look for new adventures and live fearlessly.”

Yazmeen Nasir – Shelley King

Yazmeen will leave Weatherfield in the spring and a source told Radio Times: “Shelley spoke to producers early last year and advised that after 10 years on the show and being involved in many major storylines during the past decade, she had decided the time had come for her to explore other opportunities.”

Colson Smith – Craig Tinker

Colson revealed on Instagram that Craig will be written out this year. He said: “I’ve loved every single second of my 14-year stay as a resident on the greatest street in the world. I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up in, on and around Coronation Street.”

Charlotte Jordan – Daisy Midgeley

Charlotte told The Sun in 2024 that Daisy will leave in summer this year. She said: “My time at Coronation Street is something I’ll always cherish.

“After a brilliant four years for Daisy, it’s time for me to start a new chapter and explore other opportunities.”

Paddy Bever – Max Turner

It was confirmed last year that Paddy had quit his role as Max and his final scenes will air in the spring.

A statement from the actor read: “After much reflection and in an incredibly difficult decision, I have chosen to step away from Max and Coronation Street to explore new opportunities. I have been surrounded by such kindness and support every step of the way.”

And as ITV do everything possible to keep Corrie on the air, sources say cast and crew are bracing themselves for more bad news.

An insider said: “It’s very clear this isn’t the end of cost-cutting measures from bosses.

“There are already whispers of budgets being slashed further, which will almost certainly mean more stars axed from the show.

“Lots of the cast are convinced it’s a matter of when and not if at this point.”

The Sun has contacted a Coronation Street rep for comment.

But could she handle the heat of some of our raunchiest questions? Watch to find out…[/caption]

Watch the new Fabulous Spill or Chill? challenge here and catch it every Thursday on YouTube.

Taking part in Fabulous’ Spill or Chill? YouTube challenge, Demi Sims was quizzed on all things from her strangest celebrity crush, to her raunchy bedroom preferences.

When asked, “Who is better in bed, men or women?”, the 28-year-old confessed: “I would probably say women.

“Just because I’ve had more experience with them and obviously we know where to go and where to navigate to. So I would probably say women on that one.”

And when questioned if she prefers being on top or lying back for sex, the TOWIE star shared all on her ‘switch’ bedroom style.

She admitted: “I’m a switch. So that means that I will get on top and I’ll also lay back, be a pillow princess.

“That is what you call a switch. And that is me.”

Demi is among a host of stars to take part in Fabulous’ steamy new show.

In each episode, a reality star can ‘Spill or Chill’. They have to answer questions about relationships and sex that get progressively hotter as they sit baking in a sauna. But if they fail to ‘spill’ their secrets they will have to take the penalty of ‘chilling’ in a freezing cold plunge bath or bucket shower.

Whilst Demi opted for a cold plunge when asked about the weirdest place she has ever bonked, as well as refusing to answer how many people she has slept with in one night, she was candid when it came to revealing her weirdest celebrity crush.

The star confessed: “I would say, it’s a really weird one, but I would say Stifler’s mum out of American Pie. I did think she was sexy.”

Not only this, but when asked, “What’s the difference between dating men and women?”, Demi acknowledged: “I would say that men usually take the lead.

Despite this, Demi claimed that she takes “more of a dominant role” and will “probably be the big spoon”.

As well as picking “where we’re going for dinner”, Demi claimed “it makes me feel more in charge.”

When questioned on her best ever kiss, Demi wasn’t afraid to name drop some of her famous exes.

She admitted: “I don’t know about the best kiss. I’ve [had] a lot of good kisses, I can’t lie.

“I’ve had a lot of good kisses, but my favourite one was Courtney Lynn from Love Island USA. She’s a good kisser and she’s hot.”

And not only did Demi divulge her favourite celebrity snogs, but she also revealed who, in her opinion, is her hottest ex.

Demi, who is the younger cousin of reality TV veteran Joey Essex, 34, and previously dated YouTuber and Love Is Blind star Francesca Farago, explained: “I’ve had a lot of hot exes, but if we’re talking officially, girlfriend wise, I would probably say Francesca Farago. She’s pretty sexy.”

I like the slow, passionate kisses. They are the ones

Demi Sims

The House of Sims star, who has 554,000 followers on Instagram and is currently single, was then asked if she prefers “a quickie or long and slow.”

To this, Demi candidly shared: “Long and slow. I like everything slow.

“Things [have] got to be passionate and even kissing. I like the slow, passionate kisses. They are the ones.”

But despite her openness when it came to her sex life, Demi decided to take the cold plunge when asked, “who is the fakest reality TV star?”

To this, Demi braced herself and said: “I’m not gonna say, this is gonna have to be for the cold plunge, which is sad.

“So sad. I didn’t want to have to do that.”

Drones deliver medicines to remote Irish island in minutes in ‘game changer’ plan

DRONES are delivering prescriptions to a remote Mayo island in “a game changer” initiative.

The hi-tech gadgets, which can carry 3kg of supplies, are flying from Carrowmore Beach in Louisburgh to Clare Island off Co Mayo in a landmark trial.

With the drones operating at speeds of around 120kph, the journey time is just under ten minutes.

Doctors hailed the pilot project – and insisted it will transform how remote island communities receive their healthcare.

Achill-based GP Dr Noreen Lineen-Curtis, who travels to Clare Island on a weekly basis, said: “There’s a broadband connection point on Clare Island which provides a secure video feed for patients to communicate directly with doctors, nurses and therapists.

“When this project is up and running, they will get their electronically prescribed medicines delivered by drone.

“This is such a game changer for islanders and will save them making journeys back and forth to the mainland for prescription medicine.”

The drones operate autonomously using artificial intelligence and are equipped to handle challenging terrain and unpredictable coastal weather conditions.

The project is led by Irish company Air Taurus in collaboration with the HSE and the University of Galway.

Programme Director John Morris said: “This pioneering initiative will showcase how drones can revolutionise emergency response and healthcare delivery for remote island communities, ensuring faster access to critical medical supplies when every second counts.”

The plan is to expand the auto aircraft systems to cater for emergency scenarios where life-saving medications or equipment could be sent at significant distances in brief amounts of time.

Ian McCabe, who lives on Clare Island and works with the University of Galway, said: “There are many days when the sea state makes a ferry to Roonagh Pier impossible but it would be suitable for a drone to fly.

“Short shelf life medications or those with complex or time-sensitive supply chains could also be carried.

“Our project is funded by Sláintecare through the Department of Health and we are developing telemedicine protocols and infrastructure to connect the island people with their mainland-based healthcare.

“We are active on Clare Island, Inishturk, and Inishbofin and are hoping to have our first remote outpatient consultations with UHG-based consultants before Easter.

“This will allow the islanders to avoid unnecessary travel when technology can provide the bridge between patient and doctor.”

The Healthy Islands initiative is currently being trialled at Clare Island off Co Mayo.

And officials confirmed there are plans to roll out the initiative to all remote island communities around the country.

People spit at my kids because they don’t believe they’re biologically mine – sometimes they’re terrified to leave home

A MUM-OF-FOUR explained that people don’t believe all of her children are biologically hers.

Some strangers even refuse to accept that her twins are related to each other.

Family portrait of two parents and four children, two of whom have albinism.

Two daughters in a family share the same genetic condition which makes them look different from their siblings[/caption]

Sherria and her family appeared on the Truly Show, where they discussed their different appearances.

The mum explained that she has two daughters who were born with albinism.

One of the girls has a twin brother, who doesn’t have the inherited condition.

“My daughter She’riq has albinism but my son Te’riq, he doesn’t,” Sherria said.

“That was a shocker for us once they were born.”

The family were particularly surprised as, despite being a result of genetics, the chances of having a child with albinism is one in 75.

And Sherria and her husband Terry already had a daughter, Sheterria, with the condition.

“Albinism means you just have no pigment in your hair, your skin, or your eyes,” Sherria explained.

As well as affecting your appearance, the rare condition also makes you “very sensitive to the sun”.

The twins, She’riq and Te’riq, have faced a lot of confusion when they go out in public.

“People sometimes don’t believe we are twins, they always come up to us and say, ‘Oh my God, you guys are so cute. I love your outfits’ and then we say, ‘We’re twins’ and they’ll be like ‘No’,” Te’riq said.

His sister added that their appearance isn’t the only thing that makes them dissimilar.

“We’re totally different, he’s funnier than me,” She’riq explained.

She has developed a close bond with her older sister, who she credits with “helping” and “comforting” her as she learned to come out of her shell.

And as for Sheterria, she was just glad to finally look like somebody in her family.

What is albinism?

Albinism id a genetic condition which causes a lack of melanin in the skin, hair, and eyes, resulting in pale skin, white or light hair, and vision problems.

The condition is present at birth and is passed down from parents to their children.

A person with albinism has a 100% chance of passing on the gene.

Albinism affects around one in 17,000 people worldwide, though prevalence varies by country.

It most commonly occurs in people from sub-Saharan Africa, where it affects one in 5,000.

“When the twins were born, I was in [primary] school,” the teen recalled.

“I was so excited because I wanted one to come out looking like me, I didn’t care who it was, just somebody come out looking like me.”

She said she “started crying” when she first saw her baby sister, describing it as “the best moment ever”.

Her mum explained that Sheterria had been through a lot as a result of her albinism.

“She had bullying, people call her names, I think she had somebody spit at her before, it was really hard for her,” Sherria said.

But despite the harsh reactions from strangers, Sheterria explained how “at home, I got the love”.

Terry shared the family’s concerns that She’riq would go through a similar experience.

“What the world, what she was facing outside the doors of our house, we were worried about that,” he said.

Both girls have now learned to embrace their differences and love their looks.

“When I look in the mirror, I see somebody who has come a long way,” Sheterria said.

“My eyebrows are blonde, my eyelashes are blonde, everything is blonde.

“I used to hate that but now I look in the mirror and I’m like ‘Yes, you’re cute’.”
