Wuhan lab at centre of Covid lab-leak theory planning ‘ominous’ new bat experiments as experts issue chilling warnings

A CHINESE lab at the centre of the storm over the origins of Covid is planning “ominous” new bat experiments, scientists have warned.

Researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology have found a new bat coronavirus that can enter human cells – and it shares features with the virus that causes Covid.

The research paper – penned by China‘s “Batwoman” Shi Zhengli – calls for “further investigation“, including tests in humanised mice.

Experts warned that the proposals are worrying similar to those that may have sparked the pandemic – which emerged just miles from the lab.

Biosecurity expert Dr Alina Chan told The Telegraph: “The paper ends on an ominous note – describing a set of future experiments similar to what might’ve led to the Covid-19 pandemic.”

This includes tinkering with the newly-found virus to understand how it infects human cells.

Scientists at the Wuhan lab were carrying out similar experiments in the years before Covid emerged.

Chan, co-author of Viral on the origins of the pandemic, added: “After what we experienced with Covid-19, I believe there is no biosafety level adequate for such experiments in the city of Wuhan.”

Lord Matt Ridley, who co-authored the book with Chan, said: “Many of us thought they would probably at least tiptoe away from this kind of research, even while not admitting that it probably caused the pandemic.

“But no, it seems they are intent on doing similar experiments again, in a city centre, with risky viruses.

“How does it keep people safe to test risky viruses to see if they like human receptors?”

The new virus – called HKU5-CoV-2 – enters cells in the same way as Covid, according to the research paper.

It binds to a protein found in cells in the bodies of animals – but it has not yet gained the ability to infect humans.

This is where scientists will be investigating and carrying out tests to understand the risk of mutation.

Zhengli’s latest research paper comes after The Sun revealed she was still carrying out “risky” research on bat coronaviruses.

Robert Redfield, director of America’s CDC during the pandemic, said the experiments have “potentially catastrophic consequences”.

In a paper published in Nature, Shi and a team of scientists boasted they had built the first “customised” coronavirus “receptors”.

In other words, Shi is creating the building blocks to change viruses so that they can infect different species – including humans, Mr Redfield said.

Many of us thought they would probably at least tiptoe away from this kind of research, even while not admitting that it probably caused the pandemic

Lord Matt Ridley

He said: “Take bird flu – you can modify the receptor so that instead of chickens and turkeys, it can infect humans.

“It’s potentially dangerous research. You are taking a non-pathogenic virus and changing it so that it could end up being dangerous to humans.

“You may have a pathogen that is restricted to pigs – but now you could totally change it so that it’s highly infectious to other species too.

“She’s playing around with bat viruses and modifying their receptor – so now they’ll infect cows or chickens, for example. It’s ill-advised.

“There’s potential catastrophic consequences. It could cause a new pandemic in animals or humans.”

Chan added: “There’s some potential here for risky work to happen downstream.”

The Wuhan lab has been under fire since 2020 after a mystery virus emerged just 40 minutes away at a wet market.

DRASTIC, an international team of scientists and sleuths investigating Covid’s origins, found that the lab had an extensive collection of bat coronaviruses – immediately raising concerns about a potential lab leak.

It later emerged that Zhengli and her team had collected more than 20,000 samples from bat colonies in China over nearly two decades.

They were hoping to identify pathogens in the wild which could pose a risk to humanity in the future.

The researchers identified hundreds of new bat coronaviruses by catching bats in caves, taking samples from them and then shipping the samples back to Wuhan lab – thousands of miles away.

There, the lab has a published record of souping up viruses to make them more dangerous in order to understand pandemic pathogens and how they work – also known as gain-of-function research.

It involves experiments that make already dangerous viruses more virulent or transmissible.

By late 2019, when the pandemic broke out, Shi’s team had created a dozen or so “chimeric” viruses – by swapping and stitching ingredients to test which bat coronaviruses could infect humans.

And many scientists have questioned whether Covid – which had unusual features suggesting it was genetically engineered – may have leaked from her lab.

Originally dismissed as a conspiracy theory – the lab leak hypothesis has become mainstream, with both the CIA and FBI ruling that the intelligence points to this conclusion.

Some still believe the virus jumped from an animal – but despite five years of searching, a natural origin has never been found.

Congress report confirms what we suspected

By Imogen Braddick, Assistant Foreign Editor

Finally, politicians have said what many scientists and journalists have been saying for years – that Covid did leak from a dodgy lab in Wuhan.

But how has it taken five years to say what many people suspected within weeks of China admitting there was a new virus on the loose?

In a bombshell move, Congress accused governments and members of the scientific community of trying to cover-up facts about the origins of the pandemic.

And the report is an acknowledgement that the lab leak theory is not a conspiracy – after years of shaming anyone who dare question the “consensus”.

It’s a step in the right direction in the fight for justice for the millions of people who lost loved ones in the pandemic.

Many will continue to question why finding the origins of the pandemic is important.

It’s important for the families of millions who died. It’s also important if we want to stop the next pandemic.

If Covid did leak from a lab, we must have more oversight over risky lab research. If it was a natural spillover event, we must take steps to try and prevent a similar disaster.

The Congress report is a welcome victory – but it’s taken far too long for a government to take the lead on the probe into the origins.

Here, the UK government is rightly examining the response to the pandemic with the Covid-19 Inquiry.

But it should also pay more attention to where the virus came from if we want to stop another pandemic killing millions more.

There’s still much more evidence to be found, clues to be uncovered and scientists to quiz.

LOCALS claim they are “being punished” for having big cars after they were hit by fines – because they don’t fit in parking spots.

Parking regulations are enforced for safety reasons but if motorists don’t use them properly, hefty charges may mount up.

Furious visitors of the seafront at Paignton in Torbay claim they have been hit with fines because their cars don’t fit within the white parking lines.

They say the markings are too small for modern and newer cars and Torbay Council is to blame.

One local took to Facebook to raise their concerns about Torbay Council’s parking system.

They uploaded photos of their car which showed their right back wheel to be overhanging the white line by about half a tyre.

The local captioned their photo: “Hello, just a message to warn others about parking on the seafront and around town.

“You have to have the whole vehicle and wheels inside the markings, which I learned today.

“My front bumper was touching the wall, and left wheel in the markings, but I still got a ticket.

“As did many others with similar vehicles.

“Don’t want anyone else to get an unexpected cost in half term, or while on holiday.”

While it is true, the entire vehicle must fit within the space, other locals expressed their frustration at the regulation.

One local said: “Something needs doing about this, it is happening too much.

“If the markings are not fit for purpose and normal cars cannot park within the lines then the council needs to remark the bays.

It is not fair when you have paid to park as good as is possible and still get fined.

What good does this do to our holiday visitors to encourage them to come back or recommend Torbay to others.

Get a grip Torbay and stop money grabbing everywhere for a quick buck…

Followed by a second person: “This keeps happening over and over again.

“I think people should complain to the council and get them to increase the length of the bays.

“Many cars are longer now and so many people are getting fined for parking along the seafront.

“It’s a racket and shameful that people cannot enjoy visiting or going for a stroll without getting parking fines.

“If someone cannot park then that’s on them, but when the space physically isn’t long enough for many cars- that’s discriminative.”

THE COUNCIL RESPONDS

A Torbay Council spokesperson told Devon Live that vehicles should fit in the spaces to allow of efficient parking.

But, if a person believes they have been unfairly charged, they may appeal.

They said: “We appreciate the concerns raised regarding parking enforcement in Torbay.

“Our Community Enforcement Officers are dedicated to ensuring the fairness of parking regulations for residents and visitors.

“Signage states that vehicles should be parked wholly within the designated markings to allow for efficient use of parking capacity.

“If a person feels a Parking Charge Notice has been given in error or unfairly, they can follow our appeals process.”

WILL I BE FINED FOR PARKING OUTSIDE OF SPACE LINES?

It’s important to note, drivers will be fined if their vehicle doesn’t fit within designated parking lines.

This is because parking incorrectly can stop other drivers from parking and be dangerous for others on the road, as well as as pedestrians.

In public or private car parks, ticket fines can range from £25 to £100.

Charges can sometimes be reduced if drivers pay within a certain time period, but they can also increase if drivers refuse to pay.

HOW TO APPEAL

According to Citizens Advice, drivers can appeal a ticket if they think they were parked correctly.

It is free to make an informal appeal and can be made just by contacting whoever issued the parking ticket.

Parking charge notices are issued by private parking operators such as National Car Parks, Euro Car Parks, Apcoa Parking and Parkingeye.

Penalty charge notices and excess charge notices are issued by the council. Fixed penalty notices come from the police.

A ticket may be cancelled if it turns out a driver was parked correctly, if a ticket was issued 14 days after the incorrect parking, the road markings were unclear, or if the car had broken down.

‘City-killer’ asteroid had 20% chance of hitting Earth, Nasa feared but now it’s likelier to strike MOON in horror smash

NASA has said Earth will likely be spared by a deadly Big Ben-sized asteroid and predicts it could smash into the Moon instead in a dramatic collision.

The space agency feared the chance of a clash with Earth could reach an alarming 20% by April, but now says the rock will sail past.

The asteroid is now more likely to hit the moon[/caption]

Odds of the rock hitting the Earth stand at 1-in-37,000, but the Moon may not be so lucky.

The chance of the asteroid smashing into the Moon has risen to 1-in-55, and is expected to keep going up.

But a spokesman for Nasa said: “There still remains a very small chance for asteroid 2024 YR4 to impact the Moon.”

International Asteroid Warning Network manager, Dr Vishnu Reddy, added: “The most likely outcome is that also the Moon IP (impact probability) will peak at some point and then start to drop quickly.”

If the asteroid collided with the Moon, Earth would be largely unaffected.

Operations engineer for the University of Arizona’s Catalina Sky Survey, David Rankin, told the New Scientist: “There is the possibility this would eject some material back out that could hit the Earth, but I highly doubt it would cause any major threat.”

But he added that the collision would likely be “very visible” from Earth.

Nasa has repeatedly changed estimates on whether the asteroid will crash into Earth.

Astronomers first noticed that the asteroid was hurtling towards Earth in December – and it shot straight to the top of the risk list.

The YR4 asteroid was previously graded as level three on the Torino scale.

Binzel invented the Torino scale – the system used since 1999 to categorise potential Earth impact events.

This emergency level means: “A close encounter, meriting attention buy astronomers. Current calculations give a one per cent or greater chance of collision capable of localised destruction.”

Illustration of asteroid's possible path to collide with Earth in seven years.
This diagram shows how YR4 will loop back around and pass nearby Earth

Richard Binzel, a Professor of Planetary Science at MIT, revealed to The Sun why the odds have changed.

He said: “When we first discover an asteroid, we see only a tiny piece of its orbital path.

“Astronomers always check immediately to make sure that orbital path isn’t intersecting with Earth any time soon.

“The scientific challenge comes when that initial orbit check doesn’t immediately rule out an impact course.”

“It is not unusual for the probability numbers to bounce around a bit, simply because the amount of data in the first few weeks and months is usually quite limited.”

If YR4 – estimated between 130 and 300 feet wide – did strike Earth, it would pack a punch equivalent to eight million tonnes of TNT, scientists calculated.

It would cause a devastating impact, blowing a 1.2 mile-across crater into the Earth’s crust.

Physicists drew up a potential impact zone, cutting across some of the world’s most populated areas, including Bogotá, Abidjan, Lagos, Khartoum, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Dhaka.

Map showing the potential impact zone of an asteroid.
The asteroid was previously predicted to strike across the red line

But now scientists say there will be 167,000 miles of clear sky between the rock and our planet.

Nasa said the scare proved an “invaluable opportunity” to test Earth’s planetary defence procedures, as scientists came up with ideas to stop the killer asteroid.

Astronomers considered using nukes, solar lasers and rockets to knock the rock off course and break it into smaller pieces.

Illustration of methods to deflect asteroids, including using nukes, drills, rockets, and gravity tractors.
A range of planetary defence procedures were being considered to deal with YR4

The asteroid will swing past Earth again in 2028, when final observations can be made ahead of the 2032 pass.

Epstein victim lawyer whose client ‘saw Andrew at underage bash’ says Duke must ‘be concerned’ & hails Trump doc release

PRINCE Andrew should be “concerned” about a drop of bombshell information related to Jeffrey Epstein, a lawyer for the paedo’s victims has warned.

Spencer Kuvin has hailed the attorney general’s shock announcement to expose more secret files on the disgraced financier as his clients battle for complete disclosure.

The trove of documents will reveal a “lot of flight logs, a lot of names, a lot of information” on Epstein, Pam Bondi said last night.

Mr Kuvin, who has represented many of Epstein’s victims for years, praised the decision to unseal more files set to shed more light on Epstein and his circle.

He told The Sun today: “On behalf of the victims, we have always been fighting for a full and complete disclosure of all individuals who were involved in the Epstein sexual pyramid scheme.

“Abuse on this large scale does not occur in a vacuum.

“These atrocities involve many people either directly involved in the abuse, or complicit in allowing it to continue.

“We applaud the actions of the attorney general.”

But he warned: “Anyone who was visiting Epstein at his homes should be concerned. That includes Andrew.”

Bondhi last night insisted the contents of the files “will make you sick”.

She told Fox News her department was working on protecting the personal information of over 250 victims connected to Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.

When asked whether the documents would reveal details on individuals who used Epstein’s private jet, Bondi confirmed flight logs would be shared.

She added: “What you’re going to see, hopefully tomorrow, is a lot of flight logs, a lot of names, a lot, a lot of information.

“But, it’s pretty sick what that man did. Along with his co-defendant.”

The attorney general previously said the documents were sitting on her desk to be reviewed, adding: “That’s been a directive by President Trump.”

Epstein was known to socialise with royalty, celebrities and Wall Street titans before his arrest.

One of the most high-profile names that has long been linked to Epstein is Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York, 65, has always vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

He was forced to step aside from public duties in 2019 over his friendship with the paedo financier.

Mr Kuvin previously told The Sun how one of his clients said she saw the royal at a party filled with underage girls.

Andrew has repeatedly claimed he knew nothing of Epstein‘s criminal behaviour despite their friendship.

Mr Kuvin branded Andrew’s failure to tell authorities what he knows about Epstein an “insult” to victims.

Prince Andrew was blasted over his Newsnight interview[/caption]

He has ignored repeated calls to tell US authorities what he knows about paedo Epstein’s criminal behaviour.

In his notorious Newsnight interview more than five years ago, Andrew vowed to help the probe into Epstein and his warped madam Ghislaine Maxwell.

It is hoped Andrew could unknowingly hold information that could lead investigators to the “last piece of the jigsaw” to expose the full extent of the couple’s twisted “sexual pyramid scheme“.

But the royal has remained silent – and claimed he knew nothing of Epstein’s vile crimes.

Three years ago he paid millions to Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre in an out-of-court settlement, while denying sexual assault accusations.

Andrew was, however, spared a humiliating court battle over claims he raped and abused her when she was 17.

Court documents told how Andrew stayed at Epstein’s New York home, and was accused of taking part in an “underage orgy” on Epstein’s Caribbean island.

Anyone who was visiting Epstein at his homes should be concerned. That includes Andrew.

Spencer Kuvin

An unnamed Jane Doe – widely understood to be his accuser Giuffre – was allegedly “forced” by Epstein to “have sexual relations” with the duke.

She was allegedly told to “give the Prince whatever he demanded”.

In 2020, the FBI asked the Home Office for help to quiz Andrew.

That investigation was paused last year, however.

But The Sun reported how Andrew could face a fresh FBI probe after the man set to be its new boss vowed to “do everything” to expose those who worked with his pal Epstein.

Donald Trump’s pick for FBI head, Kash Patel, has Andrew in his sights after telling a Senate hearing he is ready to investigate anyone connected to convicted paedophile Epstein.

Andrew, who has left the UK once in almost six years, is now said to be too scared to visit the US again as he fears he may be arrested.

Police in Florida began investigating Epstein in 2006, before he was sentenced to 18 months in jail for soliciting a minor for prostitution two years later.

He was then found dead in his prison cell in a Manhattan jail in August 2019 as he awaited trial on sex trafficking charges.
