Beloved family pub reveals it will shut its doors for good in blow to drinkers

LOCALS have shared their devastation after a beloved family pub revealed it will shut its doors for good.

The Farmers Arms in Goldcliff, Newport, will close at the end of service on Mother’s Day on March 20.

In a statement on Facebook, the owners said they had “fallen on hard times” and they could not be “worked through”.

The post continued: “It is with great sadness that we have to inform you our customers and the friends we have made over the 5 years.”

Locals were quick to chime in and share their heartbreak over the news.

One wrote: “Omg no way it’s such a lovely place.. It will now go to rack and ruin.”

While another added: “Will miss my Sunday lunch takeaway.”

A third said they were “absolutely gutted” and another said they were “devastated”.

Others said they would miss their Sunday roasts, which were branded the “best” by customers.

It’s not the first pub to close down in recent weeks.

The Castle Inn closed on January 6, leaving just eight pubs left in the town of 11,000 people.

The pub in Monmouth said they were forced to close the boozer after landlords decided to hike rents by 75%.

Owner Paul told the Monmouthshire Beacon that the landlord wanted to take the rent from £24,000 a year to £42,000.

He also revealed issues with one of the neighbours who “could smell food cooking and reported it to the environmental health officer”.

Elsewhere, the The Broch Bar in Kilsyth, Glasgow said it will close its doors for good today, Thursday February 27.

A statement posted on Facebook by owners of the pub read: “It’s with a heavy heart that we will be closing our doors next Thursday, 27/02/25.

“We really pushed to try and keep it open for the weekend for one last time but it is out of our hands, we are so sorry.”

TROUBLE FOR UK PUBS

It comes as a number of popular pubs have closed due to customers having less money to spend.

Stonegate recently closed one of its branches in Ormesby St Margaret.

The Farmers ceased trading on New Year’s Eve.

Stonegate has confirmed that they are recruiting for a new publican to run the business.

It came just one month after the pub giant said it would close The Bedford in Southampton.

The pub was a popular location for local students in the area and showed sport matches such as football and rugby.

The Grade II-listed building has been operating as a pub since the 1800s.

The Sun also reported that Boyzone‘s Shane Lynch and his Real Housewives of Cheshire star wife Sheena have closed their pub for good.

The D13 Irish bar in Knutsford, Cheshire closed after it was repossessed by the landlord.

No explanation has been given as to why the pub has closed.

Named after Shane’s Dublin postcode D13, the pub first welcomed boozers in April 2021.

After just three years in business, it closed for good on December 6, 2024

What is happening to the hospitality industry?

By Laura McGuire, consumer reporter

MANY Food and drink chains have been struggling in recently as the cost of living has led to fewer people spending on eating out.

Businesses have been struggling to bounce back after the pandemic, only to be hit with soaring energy bills and inflation.

Multiple chains have been affected, resulting in big-name brands like Wetherspoons and Frankie & Benny’s closing branches.

Some chains have not survived, Byron Burger fell into administration last year, with owners saying it would result in the loss of over 200 jobs.

Pizza giant, Papa John’s is shutting down 43 of its stores soon.

Tasty, the owner of Wildwood, said it will shut sites as part of major restructuring plans.

Former GAA goalkeeper warns ‘traditional goalie is nearly gone’ due to new gaelic football rules following overhaul

EX-WESTMEATH goalkeeper Gary Connaughton reckons he would struggle badly to make the grade at inter-county level nowadays – even if he was at the peak of his powers.

An All-Star in 2008, Connaughton was one of the leading players in his position during a career that also saw him help his county win their first ever Leinster SFC title.

But the goalkeeper’s duties have expanded considerably since.

And after a raft of rule changes were introduced by the Football Review Committee, the role has never been under more scrutiny.
Connaughton said: “The traditional goalie is nearly gone at this stage.

“I wouldn’t get on a county panel if I was playing football now.

“I’d be surplus to requirements because it seems to be all about what you can do out the field.

“It’s not something I’m in favour of. But that’s the new football and it seems that we just have to adapt to it.”

Following the overhaul of the laws of the game, a team can avail of a numerical advantage in the opposing half by bringing its goalkeeper forward.

Tyrone’s Niall Morgan and Monaghan’s Rory Beggan — who both epitomise the evolution of modern keeper — thrive as their long-range kicking ability is used to rack up two-point scores.

There has been much opposition to the so-called 12-v-11 rule, with Derry boss Paddy Tally claiming that it is ‘killing the game’.

But Tubberclair’s Connaughton said: “When Anthony Nash was in goal for the Cork hurlers, he had an unbelievable drive of a penalty and they changed the rules as a result.

“When a goalie masters something, there’s always going to be criticism and calls for rule changes. Morgan, Beggan and these guys have mastered it very well.

“But I don’t think it would be right to change the rules just because some counties are good at it and others aren’t. It’s up to other counties to improve and get up to that level.

“We can’t be changing the rules every five minutes. Goalies should be allowed to play out the field if they so wish.

“It’s not something that I would have liked myself because I just wouldn’t have been able to do it.

“But as a neutral, I think it makes for great entertainment, especially if they’re caught and they can’t get back.”

A number of counties, including Westmeath, have sought to adapt to the new rules by deploying an outfield player in goal.

Conor McCormack has been starting in the No  1 shirt for the Lakesmen, while Derry have taken the same approach with Neil McNicholl.

Connaughton said: “We’ve already seen goals going in because a lot of these lads just aren’t as capable with the shot-stopping at the moment.

“Great saves can add a lot to a game as well.”

HOLD THEM BACK

Morgan said recently that some keepers would walk away if they were stopped from going up the pitch.

But former stopper Connaughton said: “We have a couple of young goalies in my own club and they still love saving shots, trying to master kick-outs, dealing with high balls in and around the square and all that stuff.

“You don’t want to take those skills out of the game.

“I don’t think they should be banning goalies from coming out the field but the traditional goalie shouldn’t be allowed to die out either.”

Wexford GAA icon insists Galway clash ‘could tell an awful lot’ about current stars after ‘shot in the arm’ win vs Clare

WEXFORD legend Larry Murphy views tomorrow’s clash with Galway as an ideal opportunity for Keith Rossiter’s side to prove they can be Models of consistency.

On the back of three straight defeats, last Sunday’s impressive win in Clare was another demonstration of Wexford’s ability to conjure up big performances when they are desperately needed.

But producing the goods on a regular basis has been a problem for the Model County, who avoided relegation to the Joe McDonagh Cup in 2023 by bouncing back from a shock loss to Westmeath with a vital victory over Kilkenny.

The unpredictable nature of their form was evident again in last year’s Leinster SHC, when a defeat to Antrim was followed by a comprehensive victory over Galway.

With two games remaining, Rossiter’s men could give their hopes of retaining Division 1A status a big boost by toppling the Tribe again tomorrow at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

And Murphy told SunSport: “It’s a game that could tell an awful lot in terms of consistency, because that’s the frustration of being a Wexford fan.

“They’re capable of a performance, but can they put two together? Can they be consistent? I was actually in a place after the Kilkenny game a few weeks ago where I didn’t think we’d get any points in the league this year at all.

“The Clare match has been a shot in the arm, but the real sign of any team is can they put another performance together? Can they even put three performances together?

“They don’t have to be wins but you have to be able to come away and say that you’re performing week after week. That’s the litmus test for Wexford now.”

Wexford were resoundingly beaten by Cork, Tipperary and Kilkenny before getting their National League campaign up and running at the expense of the defending champions in Ennis.

The visitors were full value for their 1-23 to 1-17 victory against Brian Lohan’s men, who are still searching for their first victory of 2025.

Tony Kelly, who was one of nine starters from last July’s All-Ireland final victory in the Clare team to face Wexford, had 1-3 on the board early on.

But with Lee Chin leading the way in his first outing of the season, the Banner’s own relegated fears deepened with a third loss on the spin.

Murphy said: “After winning the National League and the All-Ireland, Clare are obviously looking to prioritise the tough Munster Championship that they have ahead of them.

“You were nearly looking more at who they were missing than who they had.

“Clare are just in a different place as a team. And when you’re at the top of the mountain, everybody wants to knock you. Wexford were probably just looking for some sort of a boost.

“Having Lee Chin back for his first game was obviously a big thing. His presence alone on the field had a massive effect.

“Damien Reck also probably did a bit of a job on Tony Kelly, which was needed if you look at the way the first 15 minutes went. At that stage as a Wexford supporter, you probably had your head in your hands and you were wondering how you were going to go home on the back of another poor display.

“But it didn’t turn out that way and I think Wexford pushing up on the Clare puck-outs made a bit of a difference. They were just a bit braver.

“With Lee commanding a lot of ball and Kevin Foley back as well, I thought Wexford looked an awful lot more menacing than in the previous matches.”

WEXFORD’S MVP

Now in his 13th season of senior inter-county hurling, Chin, 32, has perhaps never been more important to the Wexford cause.

The 2019 All-Star hit 0-5 in the Cusack Park win – a tally that included a magnificent first-half point from a seemingly impossible angle after he sold a clever dummy to John Conlon.

The presence of such a talismanic figure also appeared to bring the best out of his team-mates at a time when Wexford are learning to adapt to life without retired trio Liam Óg McGovern, Matthew O’Hanlon and Diarmuid O’Keeffe.

One of the heroes of the county’s last All-Ireland triumph in 1996, Murphy said: “When confidence is low and you’re struggling to find something, knowing that you have Lee Chin in the dressing room, even if he was a sub, it just changes the mood to have him there.

“You always feel you’re in a different place when you have your top players present. That all helps an awful lot, psychologically as well, and it also gives the management options to play around with certain players.

“But when you have limited resources and somebody like Lee Chin is there — even from an aesthetic point of view, he’s a man-mountain — and when he fills that jersey it just makes you feel like you’re in a better place.

“Wexford probably lacked a bit of leadership in the first few games but Lee is a natural leader.”

HUGE LOSSES

The losses of McGovern, O’Hanlon and O’Keeffe are sure to be significant.

But Murphy is enthused by the way youngsters Cian Byrne, Conor Foley and Richie Lawlor have settled in.

He added: “You have to throw down the gauntlet and you have to challenge players to step up to the mark.

“That’s how you find out about the character of some players.

“It wasn’t a big shock that those lads retired and they owed nothing to the jersey. Guys like that are not easily replaced.

“But at times like this, sometimes you have guys who come out of the shadows and they emerge into the light and they start becoming leaders. You just need a few to step up, which is the opportunity you can get with retirements.”
