INSIDE the tragic lives of TV’s forgotten quizzers the Eggheads as Chris Hughes dies – from death hoax, murder charge, assault claims and failed careers.
The tragic news of Chris’s death was confirmed via an official statement on the Eggheadssocial media page.
X/@eggheadsTVChris Hughes was 77 when he passed away and was best known for his time on Eggheads[/caption]
Chris who was aged 77 at the time of his passing, was best known for his time on Eggheads which spanned two decades.
Starting in 2003, he became a member of the regular panel of quiz experts in the hit show.
The talented quizzer is one of only seven individuals to have won both Mastermind and Brain of Britain.
He also appeared on The Weakest Link on 24 September 2001, and was voted out in the final elimination round without answering a single question incorrectly during the whole show.
Jeremy Vine became the show’s presenter in 2008 and continued hosting duties after the programme moved to Channel 5 in 2021.
However, rumours have been rife the format had been shelved since its last episode screened in April 2023.
And Jeremy Vine has all but confirmed the axe by stating: “We last filmed an episode over a year ago. It may well be we are doing it in 30 years’ time, who knows, but no immediate plans for any more.”
So, with its future in doubt The Sun takes a look inside the tragic lives of TV’s forgotten quizzers.
CJ de Mooi’s ‘killer confession’ and assault claims
BBCCJ de Mooi from Eggheads who’s real name is Joseph Connagh joined the show in 2003[/caption]
CJ de Mooi first appeared on Eggheads in 2003, as one of five original members of the show’s brilliant team.
In his autobiography, CJ states that he was given the names Andrew Paul at his birth, in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
On a self-recorded YouTube video, he said he had a highly abusive childhood, causing him to run away from home after his seventeenth birthday.
He confessed that while homeless, he had to turn to prostitution in a bid to stay alive.
Later in the video, CJ talked about how a chance encounter outside a gay bar in Cologne led to the beginnings of his modelling career.
He adopted the surname De Mooi when he began working as a model.
However, he shocked fans when he stated in his autobiography in 2015 that in 1988 he punched a man who was attempting to mug him and shoved him into a canal in Amsterdam.
He said: “I fully suspect I killed him. I’ve no idea what happened to him.”
In 2016, he was arrested at Heathrow Airport in connection with the claims and detained under a European Arrest Warrant issued in the Netherlands.
However, a judge at Westminster Magistrates’ Court declined the extradition request on technical grounds.
Two years later, CJ was declared bankrupt following lengthy legal proceedings in connection with the arrest.
In 2019, he posted on social media about his health and about his financial problems and a GoFundMe campaign was launched, saying he is “bankrupt, extremely ill and in imminent danger of losing his house.”
He also claimed that he was “dying from AIDS” and didn’t expect to live long.
CJ has alleged that he was sacked from Eggheads in 2016 on the same day claims he sexually assaulted a man on a night out in Glasgow were dropped.
Daphne Fowler’s death hoax
HandoutDaphne had appeared on many televised game shows including fan favourite Going For Gold[/caption]
Daphne has taken part in many televised game shows and won many titles, including winning Fifteen to One (twice), Going for Gold and Brain of Britain.
She appeared on Eggheads from 2003 until 2014, a quiz team described on the show as “arguably the most formidable quiz team in the country”.
But she had to answer her most bizarre question – are you still alive? – after a hoax obituary circulated on the internet in 2020.
Daphne became aware of a sick spoof when a neighbour asked her husband if she had died reported the Daily Express.
Daphne said: “One of my neighbours, Bob, rang the doorbell.
“Pete, my husband, answered to be told one of my other neighbours was upset to read on the internet I had died, and was it true?
“Bob was most relieved when I appeared to prove it was untrue – but it has been very upsetting, as you wonder what sort of weird person does this?
“I’m not on social media, preferring to protect my family’s privacy, but even then, whilst on Eggheads, fake ‘Daphnes’ appeared on Facebook and Twitter claiming to be me and writing all kind of nonsense about my daily life.”
The fake obituary had been sourced to a blog site called DeadDeath and had been widely circulated on social media.
Dave Rainford’s sad passing

In March 2020, popular Eggheads star Dave Rainford died of heart disease at the age of 51.
He had been a regular on the BBC tea time quiz show since 2012 after taking over from CJ de Mooi.
He was famously once banned from entering pub quizzes in Manchester.
Dave was one of nine Eggheads alongside Kevin Ashman, Chris Hughes, Judith Keppel, Barry Simmons, Pat Gibson, David Rainford, Lisa Thiel, Steve Cooke and Beth Webster.
Olav Bjortomt’s career switch-up

Olav finally joined the Eggheads panel after years of trying in 2021.
He had originally hoped to became an Egghead when he took part in Are You An Egghead? in 2009.
However, since the show appeared to draw to a close, for Olav, he has had to resort to taking a back seat once again.
He took up a job on rival show The Chase but not as a quizzer.
Losing his on-screen status, he was demoted to a question writer behind the scenes.

AN ENGLISH golfer achieved the seemingly impossible – as he hit TWO hole-in-ones in the same round.
Dale Whitnell teed it up in the second round of the Investec South African Open Championship in Durban on Friday.
@DPWorldTourDale Whitnell hit two hole-in-ones in the same round[/caption]
@DPWorldTourHe started off with an ace on the par-three second at the Investec South African Open Championship in Durban[/caption]
And after making a birdie on the first hole, the world No545 nailed his tee shot at the 185-yard par-three second with his seven iron.
Video footage shows the ball pitching just short and left of the stick in the back-left of the green before slowly rolling into the cup – prompting cheers and high-fives of celebration back at the tee box.
Whitnell, 36, then eagled the par-five third to go through the first three holes in five-under-par at the DP World Tour event.
He bogied seventh and 11th – sandwiching a hat-trick of birdies – before repeating his trick at the par-three 12th.
The Colchester star opted for his 50-degree wedge for the 128-yard.
A fourth replied: “That’s going to be one expensive round in the clubhouse Dale!” in reference to the tradition of buying drinks if a hole-in-one is scored.
A fifth added: “Dale Whitnell’s scorecard looks like when you bring a toddler to the golf course and they just sit in the cart and write down a random number for each hole.”
And a final user thought the graphic showing his “outrageous” first three holes might be a “scoring error”.
Whitnell managed three more birdies and a double bogey and finished his eventful round with a score of 63 to go to nine-under overall.
He turned pro in 2009, finished T60 in his only major appearance at the 2012 Open and secured his solo European Tour victory in Sweden in 2023.
Many pro golfers do not manage a hole-in-one in their entire career – let alone two within 11 holes in the same round.
However, American Brian Harman managed two hole-in-ones in the same round at The Barclays in 2015 and in doing so became the third PGA Tour player to do so after amateur Bill Whedon in 1955 and Yusaku Miyazato in 2006.

EMMERDALE star Liam Fox has revealed how he was fobbed off by the NHS for EIGHT years before finally being diagnosed with skin cancer.
Liam, 54, who played Dan Spencer in the ITV soap for 12 years before leaving in the summer of 2023, had an operation earlier this month to remove a patch of ‘carcinoma’.
Liam played Dan Spencer in Emmerdale up until 2023ITVInstagram / @liamfoxactorofficialEmmerdale actor Liam Fox underwent treatment this month after an eight year battle[/caption]
SuppliedHe has opened up about his fight with cancer[/caption]
Instagram / @liamfoxactorofficialThe star has been left with a large scar from treatment[/caption]
In an exclusive interview, the much-loved actor wants to raise awareness not only about skin cancer but also if you feel that something isn’t right then you have to be persistent with the NHS.
He said: “I’ve been lucky. If this had been a ‘melanoma’ rather than a ‘carcenoma’ it could kill you.
“None of us want to be that person that nags the NHS, we know they’re busy we know they’re overworked, but when you know in yourself that something’s not right, you’ve got keep pushing.”
Liam is currently on tour with the stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and finally had his operation earlier this month with doctors telling him they were happy with how it had gone.
But having first discovered the little patch of skin on his left temple back in 2017 it’s been a long journey to get it sorted.
He said: “I went to the doctors and they said ‘Oh no, it’s just flakey skin’ it’s fine, it’s nothing to worry about. A few weeks later I went back to them again because it was still there, I just wasn’t happy with what they’d told me, it just didn’t feel right.
“I went back again, and they said the same thing, it’s just flakey skin. I ended up going back to my doctor a third time and saw someone else who said it was ‘Solar Keratosis’ and gave me some Fluorouracil cream. I put that on for a few weeks and it seemed to have cleared it up. Then about a year or so later it came back.
“I went back to the doctors and they gave me the cream again which cleared it up. But they also got me into Warrington Hospital for some tests, to check it. They took a sample of the area and it came back negative, and I thought okay? They said they wanted to check it again in six months.
“Six months later I never heard anything from the hospital, and the patch was still there, so I rang them again, I said ‘I need this sorting out as it’s starting to bleed again’ and they said, ‘well you’ll just have to wait in the queue like everyone else, we’re not concerned’, I was like, okay, right.”
But another six months went by and the patch was still bleeding. Again, another six months passed. The patch was bleeding and Liam knew it wasn’t right, so again he called the hospital.
He said: “I told them that I really needed to sort it out as it was still bleeding, the woman on the desk said, ‘Oh yeah, you should have been seen by now’ I got a meeting at the hospital a couple of days later. The doctor that I saw admitted that I should have been seen much sooner.
“I don’t know if there were some changes but when I rang the final time that’s when they apologised and said I should have been seen by now.
“It was January 2024 by this point. They finally told me that it was a ‘carcenoma’ we’ll have to get that out. They don’t grow every quickly but we’ll get it sorted.
“I saw the doctor again and they said it would be six months before they could get it sorted. I rang again at the beginning of February and said ‘am I going to get this sorted, it’s ridiculous’ and they sorted an appointment the following week.
“I went in and had it taken out, but it’s just been ridiculous having to push down barriers just to get it sorted.”
Despite having to be persistent, once they discovered that it was skin cancer the treatment and care he received was brilliant.
He said: “The surgeon on the day at St Helen’s Hospital was brilliant. I can’t praise them enough.
“Once I got to the hospital to have it done everyone was fantastic. But had it been a ‘melanoma’ the time it took to sort it out doesn’t bear thinking about.
“A carcinoma tends to just damage the surrounding area. It can invade and go into your bones and your skull and cause damage, but they seem quite happy that it’s all gone okay.
“I feel alright, and everything is healing nicely. I only went in for the day and had some local anaesthetic and they cut it out. They seem quite happy that it’s all gone okay. I’ve got to go back in six weeks for a routine check-up.
“It’s been frustrating but I am lucky. The one I’ve got is the most common skin cancer on the planet. I’ve always been pretty good at putting on suncream but maybe the damage was done when I was younger, we don’t know.”
Instagram / @chittyontourLiam is currently starring in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang the tour[/caption]
The actor played Dan for 12 years
Liam finishes his stint as Grandpa Potts in the stage production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in May. By that point he would have done 320 shows up and down the country.
He said: “It’s been great. The saddest part was losing The Vivienne at Christmas, she was incredible as the childcatcher, and we’d all had such a great time touring together.
“It’s just so tragic. Everyone that we work with is outstanding, such lovely people. I was a bit nervous when I first started as I’ve never sang before but I’m like, ‘Oh actually I can do this’ and it’s been really great. There such a cracking group of people and it’s been such a great tour to do. By the time we finish we’d have done 320 shows.”
So what next? Liam said: “I’ve had a few conversations about some television projects and then hopefully I’ll do pantomime again at Christmas.
Cancer types, signs and symptoms
Everything you need to know about different types of Cancer
“It’s nice not knowing what’s coming up this year, it’s exciting. Obviously I loved my time in Emmerdale but there’s something about not knowing what’s coming. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what’s next.”
Readers can still get tickets to see Liam in Chitty which also sees the return of EastEnders legend Charlie Brooks as the childcatcher.

MEGHAN Markle has shared a clip from her new Netflix show and it revealed three secret techniques she uses to make people appear to be her BFF.
According to a body language expert, the Duchess of Sussex, 43, displayed these signals when she was meeting celebrity chef Roy Choi.
NetflixMeghan Markle shared a new clip from her upcoming Netflix show, With Love, Meghan – and it showed some techniques she does to win people over[/caption]
NetflixIn the clip, Meghan bonded with celebrity chef Roy Choi[/caption]
NetflixThe pair prepared a meal – but it was Meghan’s body language which grabbed attention, according to an expert[/caption]
In the Netflix clip from With Love, Meghan, airing on March 4, Meghan bonded with Roy as they made a meal.
Speaking to Fabulous, body language expert Judi James said: “The kaleidoscopic snippy-clips of ‘Meghan World’ here seem to imply it is an idyllic place where she is both adoring and adored.
“Her bonding rituals look like a bottomless buffet of cute dancing, double high-five hand slaps plus some reward hugging from Harry.
“We can see her friendship bonding techniques at work during the clips with the chef.”
The body language expert shared how Meghan does three secret techniques to make people feel like she is their best friend…
1. Mirroring
NetflixFrom her outfit to her tone of voice, Meghan ‘mimics’ people to put them at ease[/caption]
Judi explained that Meghan’s mirroring and mimicry are “intense” in the clip.
She explained: “Meghan dressed the same as the chef, she mimics his cookery techniques and as they chat she references shared experience and even adapts her own vocal tone so they sound alike as they speak.
“The magical techniques are so effective that the chef even remarks that ‘You and I are so similar, we should have met a long time ago’.”
2. Celebratory rituals
Judi James pointed out how Meghan does ‘celebratory rituals’Netflix
The next thing Meghan does to get people on her side is “celebratory rituals”, claims Judi.
The body language pro stated: “Glasses are lifted and clanked in toasts of appreciation and bonding and hands are clapped together in the air in gestures of shared triumph.
“In the real world this is a behavior usually only seen among teams celebrating a win.
“Meghan’s BFFs are being shown as constantly celebrating everything with her in rituals of shared achievement.”
3. Smiling
It may seem obvious, but getting people to smile is one of Meghan’s main techniques for breaking down any barriers.
Judi stated: “ In real life only small children have this experience but here it is shown as a non-negotiable given.
Eliciting a smile is a key way to get people on side, claims JudiNetflixMeghan did a few dances to lighten the mood, according to the body language pro[/caption]
“Meghan even does little dances to make us all smile when we look at her.
“Yet it is interesting how quickly her responses change when her new friend says something she doesn’t agree with or understand.”
However, Meghan’s demeanour changed from “flattering mimicry to wary disbelief” when Roy told her that he listens to “Death metal” when cooking.
NetflixMeghan was shocked when Roy admitted he listens to Death Metal music while cooking[/caption]
NetflixRoy said he listens to the music genre when ‘butchering’[/caption]
Judi added: “It is here their differences suddenly begin to glare out.
“When she turns back to work she throws a side-eye look that appears wary and her mouth forms what looks like a sulk shape.
“She stares at the chef to rebuke him, telling him ‘That doesn’t sound like the joy of cooking’, and shaking her head at him.
“His following non-idyllic comment about ‘It’s good when you’re butchering’ sits jarringly in Meghan’s world of sweet treats and floral prints and her facial expression illustrates that point.”
NetflixMeghan’s demeanour changed from ‘flattering mimicry to wary disbelief’, claims Judi[/caption]
In the clip, Roy added: “We all have different sides to us”, with Meghan replying: “That’s true. Multifaceted folks, that’s what we are.”
Meghan also spoke about fond memories of fun times dancing in Koreatown.
“The best thing about Koreatown you could go to all ages clubs and karaoke bars,” she said.
Mr Choi shared: “I was part of dance crews, all that stuff.”
“No one talks about all the dances that were such a big deal, the Roger Rabbi and the Kid ‘n Play, it was so much fun.”
The Chef laughs: “Man, you and I are so similar, we should have met a long time ago.”
Fan reaction
PAWith Love, Meghan, airs on Netflix on March 4[/caption]
Fans were quick to share their excitement in the comment section.
“This looks great! Just what we need right now!” wrote one.
“Cannot wait,” agreed another.
It comes after Meghan also shared behind the scenes footage with Prince Harry making a surprise appearance.
Meghan, 43, captioned her latest Instagram post: “Six more days until our show launches on @netflix!
“Celebrating the crew and everyone who helped make this happen! The countdown begins.”
Showtime
Last month, the Duchess of Sussex announced her lifestyle series, ‘With Love, Meghan’, which will be released on Netflix on March 4, after it was postponed from January due to the LA wildfires.
A trailer for the programme showed Meghan, 43, inviting friends and famous guests to a California estate where she shares cooking, gardening and hosting tips.
The Netflix show will have eight 33 minute episodes featuring a host of Meg’s various Hollywood friends trying her simple, yet “elevated”, food.
The series is reportedly being made to complement her lifestyle brand As Ever, which Meghan announced last week.
The Duchess was forced this month to re-brand American Riviera Orchard – originally announced a year ago – due to trademark issues.
Why did Prince Harry and Meghan Markle step back as senior working royals?
PRINCE Harry has always wanted out of the Royal Family and the repercussions will be felt for years, an expert has claimed.
The Duke of Sussex has lived in California with his wife Meghan Markle since 2020 after they dramatically quit their jobs as working royals and moved across the pond.
Katie Nicholl, who is Vanity Fair’s royal correspondent, told The Sun’s Royal Exclusive show that Megxit did not come as a surprise to her.
Speaking to The Sun’s Royal Editor Matt Wilkinson, the commentator explained: “Anyone who knows Harry is aware he’s always wanted a way out of the Royal Family.
“He’s said multiple times on the record that he wished he’d never been born a prince.
“I think he really is living the life he wants to now. It’s very, very sad that it’s played out the way it has.”
In a statement made on the Sussexes’ Instagram account as they stepped back in 2020, the pair wrote: “After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment.
“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.
“This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity.”
