RYAN McHUGH is chuffed Donegal “leader” Michael Murphy is back to spearhead their league and Championship hopes.

Michael Murphy retired from inter-county football in November 2022 but performed a shock U-turn as he returned to the fold this season

The 35-year-old retired from inter-county football in November 2022 but performed a shock U-turn.

McHugh, 30, is buzzing to have their icon back ahead of a trip to face Galway in a battle of the top two in Division 1 on Sunday.

The Kilcar man said: “It’s unbelievable.

“There’s not much more you can say about what Michael has given to his county. To put the boots back on again is unbelievable.

“He’s just a leader on and off the pitch. He showed that for the wee glimpse he was on.

“You want all the best players involved in the squad and in the set-up, driving us on every single night, so it’s great to have him back.”

Murphy’s introduction clearly irked the Orchard as their skipper Aidan Forker was sent off for headbutting the Glenswilly man just seconds after he came on.

McHugh added: “He’s a phenomenal footballer, and he’s only hopefully going to improve us.”

Meanwhile, Aidan Forker was likened to Zinedine Zidane for the moment of madness that saw him shown a straight red card against Donegal.

The Armagh stalwart was shown his marching orders following a bizarre incident involved Michael Murphy in Ballybofey.

The Donegal man had only moments earlier made his return following a two-year hiatus, much to the delight of fans.

He immediately tussled with old enemy Forker, with the two men pushing and shoving the other.

Then, in a moment of madness, Forker headbutted Murphy in his chest, leaving the referee with no choice but to brandish the red card.

Fans immediately compared him to Zinedine Zidane, who was famously sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final.

Cork star Chris Óg Jones thriving under new rules as running stats drop but scoring soars

Cork’s hat-trick hero Chris Óg Jones has revealed that his distance covered during games has almost halved since the new rules were introduced.

The attacking ace was running up to 11km per match before the Football Review Committee’s experimental rules were adopted for 2025.

Jones is thriving in the three-v-three structure in the league campaign to date

The three-v-three structure now sees Jones stationed in the attacking half at all times and his GPS stats have fallen accordingly.

His scoring output has risen, though, finding the net in every round of the League for a 5-8 total.

“My running is after being halved compared to last year. Not quite halved but not far off it either,” said Jones after notching 3-4 against Westmeath.

“I was covering 10, 11km. I am not quite there this year.

“It is a bit easier for me, you’d say. But the other side is that when you are not going back, you are expected to score. You are expected to deliver. So there is an added pressure there.”

While his total distance covered has dropped, Jones is required to sprint much more.

“The distance is nearly halved but the high-speed running is gone up. We are sprinting a lot more. Twisting and turning a lot more.

“It is brilliant to play in. Last year, you’d get the ball out wide. You can’t take a man on because if you beat one, you have two more coming and waiting.

“So this year you can get it, you can turn, and you can try and take him on.

“As time goes on, those one-v-one battles might become even better because the defenders will get better at the one-v-one defending and the attackers will get better at the one-v-one attacking. It is new for everyone at the moment.”

Jones admits he found the game “demoralising” to play prior to the changes.

“I think everyone is delighted. Something had to give. It was so bad and so demoralising to play in the last couple of years.

“It is just brilliant to be involved in this. Brilliant to play in every game we have played in this year. Up and down. Great football. All good from my side.

“(Previously) you’d play the odd game where it was brilliant, the scoring would be high, it was open, and there would be one-v-one battles. But that was cancelled out by other games of blanket defence.

“I think for everyone, not even the inside forwards, everyone is enjoying it.

“The backs, Dan O’Mahony inside there, he loves the one-v-one battles. He’s loving this. It is not just us forwards. It is good for everyone.”

Despite netting three goals in the 3-18 to 3-17 victory, Jones didn’t quite deliver on his target for manager John Cleary.

“The goal I set coming in was to set up a goal, that was John’s request. I didn’t quite do that!” he chuckles.

“I am around long enough to know that injuries or form can dip. Anything can change. I just go day from day.

“I am not worried about next week or thinking about next week, it is about tomorrow and getting the recovery right.

“I am definitely not getting ahead of myself. It is only February. Long year ahead yet.”

Connor Parsons backs Bohemians for ‘special’ season after derby triumph over Shamrock Rovers

CONNOR PARSONS reckons Sunday was just the start for Bohemians.

Parsons and Lys Mousset linked up to good effect with the winger hitting the post before Ross Tierney scored the rebound for the Dublin derby winner against Shamrock Rovers.

Ross Tierney scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 at Aviva Stadium

It was a welcome good start after a disastrous eighth-place finish last season.

And former Waterford winger Parsons – who returned to the League of Ireland after a short stint with Dagenham and Redbridge – is confident Bohs can put their best foot forward this term.

Parsons said: “We can offer an attractive style of football that people want to come to watch.

“Everyone will be fighting, we all want to be pushing on for Europe and do good things. I feel like it will be exciting.

“I felt they were struggling last year and they were in a transition phase with the new coaches and players coming in and out.

“When I was at Waterford, you could sense there was, what’s the word? Probably an uneasiness in games.

“They didn’t have a great season but they need to forget that because there’s a new squad and chapter.

“The lads said it’s the best squad for the last few years. As soon as I came in, I saw the quality of the lads here compared to what I’ve been at before. I feel we can achieve something special again.”

A big part of that is Mousset who played his part in Sunday’s win despite being someway short of match fitness.

Parsons said:  “He’s bright and sharp with his movement. For the goal, I’ve played on the inside and he’s noticed that. Before the ball comes to me, I know he’s going to be there.

“That’s opened up the space for me to drive at the back four and we score from it.

“He was playing in the Premier League a few years ago and that’s good for all of us. The way he is in training you can see he’s so sharp.

“He’s still got a lot, well a bit, of a way to go fitness-wise. It’s unbelievable for all of us, especially me playing up in that attacking area. Hopefully we can get a few assists and goals together.

“Any club would be buzzing to have him because he’s such a big name and played at such a level. It’s understandable why fans are loving him.

“He’s a great character, a funny guy but he’s got a long way to go. As soon as he gets the first goal, I’m sure that will settle him and he’ll score a good few.”

And Parsons helped to show why Alan Reynolds – who had worked with him at Waterford – was so keen to sign him.

The 24-year-old said: “Rennie gives me that confidence. He trusts me, he believes in what I can do, and especially on days like Sunday I love it.

“To make my debut in such a big stadium, it couldn’t have gone much better.

“When you get that trust from the manager to just go out to play your football, I feel I’ve confidence this year.”

And he believes Bohs’ confidence will grow from holding out against Rovers when they exerted pressure after the break.

CONFIDENCE

He said: “We knew Rovers would be on it early so we had to match that and we felt that’s what we did.

“We had a good few chances in the first half but didn’t capitalise on them all. Their goalkeeper made some good saves.

“That goal settled us a little bit and we were under pressure in the second half. I think the occasion got to everybody a bit.

“There’s a statistic where Rovers are on top of a lot of games for the first 45/60 minutes. We knew coming out for the second half that they’d be sharp and on it.

“Everybody saw that but we soaked up the pressure and held on really well.”

Next up for Bohs is a trip to Derry City who will expect to be better after a poor opening night showing against Shelbourne.

Parsons said: “The challenge straight away is the pitch – the astro is a challenge in itself. It’s also a big pitch.

“Derry are a good side but I feel we’ll have the momentum and confidence from this win.”
