Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Raith Rovers saw the Jags fall 14 points behind Championship leaders Falkirk – acting as the final straw for the board.

Firhill chairman Richard Beastall confirmed: “The board has made the difficult decision to part ways with Kris. 

“This was not an easy choice.

“When Kris left as a player in 2019, it was said that he is, and always will be, a legend at Partick Thistle Football Club.

“That remains true today.

“On behalf of everyone at the club, we thank Kris for his dedication and wish him the very best for the future. 

“He will always be welcome at Firhill.”

Doolan’s No.2 Paul McDonald has also left the club with Brian Graham and youth coach Mark Wilson placed in temporary charge.

Veteran striker Graham – who also manages the club’s women’s team – would be interested in landing the job full-time.

But ahead of Thistle’s crunch clash against Airdrie, SunSport understands the club are keen on attracting a more experienced figure.

That would put former Celtic boss Lennon and ex-Well gaffer Kettlewell firmly in the mix.

A Thistle source also highlighted the job done by Billy Dodds during his time at Inverness Caley Thistle.

The former Jags striker came within 45 minutes of a return to the Premiership – also taking Highlanders to a Scottish Cup Final against a backdrop of behind-the-scenes turmoil.

Former Raith manager Ian Murray would also be interested in succeeding Doolan.

Thistle’s top goalscorer said his farewells on Monday – ending a 17-year association with the Jags.

Initially placed in interim charge, he was installed as Ian McCall’s successor in March, 2023.

He came agonisingly close to promotion to the Premiership in his first season in charge, before guiding the Jags to the playoffs again last May.

But Thistle have won just once this year and are out of the title race.

The board believe a new man can help consolidate a play-off place.
