Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic thought Kevin Hart ‘was someone’s kid’ at All-Star break

Nikola Jokic isn’t exactly someone who gives it his all during the All-Star Weekend. His consistent excellence on the hardwood may make him a worthy inclusion on the All-Star Game roster, but the Denver Nuggets star rarely takes the game itself seriously. Jokic prefers to have fun during the season’s annual hiatus, and for good […]

UK inflation RISES as millions to be hit with hefty bill hikes – what it means for your money

The UK’s rate of inflation has increased in a hit for households – we reveal what it means for your money.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) measured 3% in the 12 months to January.

This was up 0.5 percentage points from December, when inflation sat at 2.5% and is the highest level in ten months.

The Bank of England has been attempting to bring inflation back to its target of 2%.

UK inflation peaked at 11.1% in October 2022, which was the highest rate in 40 years.

The news will come as a blow to millions of households who will see their broadband and mobile bills rise as a result.

Why does inflation matter?

INFLATION is a measure of the cost of living. It looks at how much the price of goods, such as food or televisions, and services, such as haircuts or train tickets, has changed over time.

Usually people measure inflation by comparing the cost of things today with how much they cost a year ago. The average increase in prices is known as the inflation rate.

The government sets an inflation target of 2%.

If inflation is too high or it moves around a lot, the Bank of England says it is hard for businesses to set the right prices and for people to plan their spending.

High inflation rates also means people are having to spend more, while savings are likely to be eroded as the cost of goods is more than the interest we’re earning.

Low inflation, on the other hand, means lower prices and a greater likelihood of interest rates on savings beating the inflation rate.

But if inflation is too low some people may put off spending because they expect prices to fall. And if everybody reduced their spending then companies could fail and people might lose their jobs.

Showband legend Dickie, who passed away in December aged 88, once threatened to give Johnny “a box” as a fiery war of words between the stars exploded.

But What’s Another Year crooner Johnny will now sing some of the last star’s biggest hits at the Celebrating Dickie Rock concert in Dublin’s National Concert Hall on Saturday, April 19.

Dickie’s son Jason Rock told The Irish Sun: “Dad said he would give Johnny a dig, but he ended up giving Johnny a gig.

“This is wonderful news. Johnny is a huge star, an amazing presence, and what a voice to have singing Dad’s songs. We are thrilled at this news.”

The Rock family said they are touched Johnny will jet in from Gothenburg, Sweden, to perform.

The Hold Me Now legend will perform with Rock’s own band, The Sugarcubes, before jetting back the next morning to Sweden, where he is filming a TV special.

Jason told us: “It’s a long way to come for Johnny but he obviously didn’t want to miss Dad’s concert and we are very touched by the trouble to make it here.”

It’s a remarkable turnaround after the legendary spat between the Irish showbiz legends, which saw Dickie threaten to give Johnny “a f***ing box” back in 2020.

His pledge came after Johnny claimed Dickie lived in a “fantasy world” during an interview.

Contrasting his international success against Dickie’s, Johnny had said: “You know, I’ve sang for Pope John Paul, for the Queen of England, for Prince Charles, for Lady Diana — when she was alive — for the Government of Ireland, for every head of state in Europe.

“I toured with the Royal Symphony Orchestra. I’ve done the London Palladium, about 20 times, Top of the Pops about 14 times.

“Get Dickie to match one of those, you know?”

He added: “What would Dickie Rock know about being a musician? Dickie’s idea of an international tour was to have a gig in England. I love Dickie, but he’s a legend in his own head. He lives in a fantasy world.”

‘I’D GIVE HIM A BOX’

Quizzed if he would give Johnny a hug and make up, outraged Dickie famously told The Irish Sun: “Give Johnny a hug? I’d give him a f***ing box. I’m 82. Even now I’d give him a box.”

The Cabra-born sensation added: “His career is mostly abroad and he is very successful at it.

“I’m happy that Irish people know me. I am happy to be at home and not to have to go away to pursue success.”

The Irish Sun’s explosive front page prompted furious exchanges between fans on RTE’s Liveline and a peace deal brokered by host Joe Duffy, in which the two men agreed to settle their differences.

Now Johnny — who is donating his fee to the Crumlin children’s hospital — will prove the feud is over by singing for Dickie’s fans, who are coming from all over Ireland to attend the special gig.

Dickie’s musical director Eugene McCarthy, who is behind the show, told The Irish Sun: “Johnny really wanted to sing some of Dickie’s biggest hits so he’s learning There’s Always Me and Candy Store to sing them on the night.”

His sons Jason and Richard will also perform at the concert.

Ronan Collins, who delivered the eulogy at Dickie’s funeral and played for many years in his band, will also perform at the concert, along with Sandy Kelly and The Miami Showband’s Murty Quinn.

Housing boost as new laws to allow granny flats to be built in back gardens without planning permission being proposed

GRANNY flats could get the green light to be built without planning permission in Irish back gardens under new proposals being considered by Government.

At the moment, planning exemptions allow for a 40 sq/m extension to the rear of a home once it is attached to the property.

With over 440,000 young adults living at home with their parents, a new proposal being considered by the Government would extend this exemption to detached modular units.

This means that cabin-style granny flats could be built out a back garden without the need for planning permission as long as it is the right size.

The Irish Sun understands that Junior Minister in the Department of Housing John Cummins held discussions with officials recently to explore the extension of planning exemptions.

A source said: “The Minister has made it clear that there needs to be planning exemptions which enable intergenerational movement between the main dwelling house and the smaller home which would be situated to the rear of the property.

“This would allow for a younger person to live independently of the family home in the short term and will give the option for their parents in time to right-size while maintaining the support of their family in close proximity.”

Officials in the Department of Housing were supportive of the move.

While there is an acknowledgement that the measure will only be appropriate in homes where there is enough space at the rear of a property, it’s clear that thousands of granny gaffs could pop up.

A paper on the proposal is currently being prepared by the Department with other Government departments asked to make submissions before the plan is put before the public for consultation.

It’s understood Fine Gael Minister Cummins is keen for the exemption rule change to be put in place as quickly as possible.

ASTON Villa host Liverpool in a rescheduled Premier League fixture that could go a long way in the title race.

So only subscribers with the British giants will be able to stream via the TNT Sports Player.

What time is kick-off between Aston Villa and Liverpool?

Kick-off from Villa Park will be at 7:30pm. Coverage on TNT Sports will get going an hour beforehand.

What are the odds?

The home side are 3/1 while Arne Slot’s men are fancied at 4/5. You can back a draw at 14/5.

Slot vow

The Dutchman vowed to “act differently” after he was charged by the FA over his behaviour at the end of last Wednesday’s action-packed derby with Everton.

He received a red card after shaking referee Michael Oliver’s hand in an aggressive manner while talking to him after the final whistle.

Slot was charged after allegedly “acting in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards the referee”.

He has promised to change his behaviour following the incident, suggesting he will calm himself down before speaking to referees in future.

Slot told Sky Sports: “I hope next time I will act differently.

“The best thing to do is always go inside and calm down and then talk to the referee if you want to.”

SunSport understands he was sent off for his comments, NOT the handshake.

The FA website initially shared an update stating Slot would be banned for two games, but it was later taken down as it is understood Oliver’s post-match report still needs to be reviewed.

Liverpool and Everton were both charged by the FA too for failing to control their players.
