As Battlefield Falls behind Call of Duty, EA Must Revive a Legendary Franchise but with a Major Twist

The Battlefield franchise has recently presented EA with its fair share of difficulties. Every major BF game released in the past ten or so years, with the exception of Battlefield 1, seems to have had its share of problems. No entry has made this more evident than Battlefield 2042 in 2021, which undoubtedly contributed to the alienation of the majority of the fan base and caused them to lose sight of the series’ former glory.

Similar way, EA has also fallen short of Actvision’s Call of Duty, which was once considered to be a mouth-watering battle. And with the cancelation of several BF titles along with BF 2042‘s utter failure, that battle doesn’t seem to be reviving itself. That is why EA needs to bring back its another franchise which has the potential to go toe-to-toe against Call of Duty.

EA needs to bring back the Medal of Honor franchise

EA should consider bringing the Medal of Honor series back to life if it wants to give itself a competitive edge in the first-person shooter market. The original game in the franchise, which was started by the renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg, was a huge hit on the first PlayStation and helped make World War II shooters more widely known. MoH went on to become a mainstay franchise, with multiple popular games available on the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube.

Unfortunately, the franchise began to lose traction in the early 2010s, particularly when it began to imitate Call of Duty too closely, particularly with the Modern Warfare games.

After Warfighter in 2012, the series took a lengthy break before making a comeback in 2020 with Above and Beyond, a VR-only game. Nevertheless, the MoH series is still very well-liked and now might be the best time for EA to try it again.

Since it has the teams to develop a new game, EA can support its claim with MoH. Although DICE would be better off staying with BF for the time being, Respawn Entertainment has obvious first-person shooter experience and could be hired to create a new game. It might be time to let the team work on a non-VR version of the series since they did work on Above and Beyond in 2020.

How can Battlefield benefit from Medal of Honor‘s return?

Medal of Honor‘s return could offer some significant variation to the Battlefield formula, particularly since EA may decide to release the games in a cyclical manner. A new MoH game could be promoted and released for a year by the publisher, after which the team could work on the next game while promoting the upcoming Battlefield game.

Modern Warfare and Black Ops, the two primary Call of Duty sub-franchises, are naturally traded off by Activision, so EA could do the same with two completely different games.

Reviving MoH might also make sense because it offers a distinct taste from BF. While some recent BF games have opted for boots-on-ground gameplay, the MoH franchise has mostly been set in World War II, with a few exceptions.

Several of its entries have concentrated on contemporary and future warfare. The best of both worlds would be provided by MoH and BF running consecutively, allowing players to choose the kinds of wars they want to fight in. And that is how Hardline can also be revived as well.

However, EA can’t replicate what CoD has done so far. Although CoD is a good game overall, Activision has recently moved to a live service genre with this franchise, which makes it extremely difficult to find a good single-player war shooter.

After attempting to fill that niche, EA failed miserably with BF2042. Therefore, it should only be a single-player game with little to no multiplayer PvP if it does decide to bring back MoH.
